The Community Round Up

World Cup quarter-final team selections and the tournament’s heroes and villains have hogged the submissions and hot topics generated by the community this week. Back home, the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Game was also discussed, as was the Premier League’s potential hot prospects and weakest links for the season ahead. We recall the key contributions from the community over the past week, whilst also dropping in on the current crop of World Cup tournaments and competitions.

The Community Articles

Preparation for the knockout stages and the weekend’s last eight of the World Cup were the major focus of this week’s submissions. Balotellis Bib was in fine form once again, guiding the community on the key squad selection decisions. He was on hand to look at the major lessons learnt from the group stages and last 16 ties, whilst also provideding this excellent guide to navigating the knockout rounds in the Official FIFA Fantasy game.

Another of our most prolific writers, Daniel Levy 16, also came forward to offer sound advice for those scanning for a bargain in the Official game. His rundown of the best budget goalkeepers and defenders and midfielders provided essential reading as the transfer window swung open.

Each month, we have a £20 Amazon voucher on offer to the author of the best community article as chosen by you. We will launch a Hot Topic to gather your votes and remind you of some of the best of June’s community articles on Monday. The winner will be revealed in next week’s Round-up.

The Hottest Topics

With just the semi finals and finals left to play, many of the World Cup’s heroes and villains have already made themselves known. In answer to Irish Madrista’s call to name the World Cup’s most sensational surprises, DonaldDuckSnr has been impressed with the performances of the Algerian, Costa Rican and Greek outfits, while Siva Mohan was among many to nominate Colombian pair James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado as the tournament’s surprise packages.

Meanwhile, Heydudes13’s hot topic explored the best prospects available at the back in the Official FIFA game, with Holland’s Stefan de Vrij earning special praise. Germany’s last 16 goal hero Andre Schurrle is a favourite of Willis and gained a special mention in our look ahead to the quarter finals clashes.

Elsewhere, Gnu and A SquishyPotato looked at the villainous bunch who have failed to live up to their pre-tournament billing. In Gnu’s assessment of the tournament’s biggest flops, Juan Carlos nominated the entire England team, while Ginkapo placed Spain’s squad at the top of the flop charts. Sheep, meanwhile gave a long list of World Cup 2014 failures, including Wayne Rooney, Leighton Baines and Eden Hazard. ASquishyPotato’s World Cup disappointment XI included Steven Gerrard, as well as Ecuador skipper and United winger, Antonia Valencia.

For DHWizzo the entire Brazil squad have been a let down. In one of the week’s most popular posts, he explained his argument for avoiding their assets in the closing rounds, particularly their suspect defence. For those wanting to find more evidence of World Cup heroics and villainy, Jared Mason’s excellent player statistics for the Official FIFA Fantasy game will prove interesting reading.

The community was also in nostalgic mood this week, taking time out to look back and name some of their favourite ever World Cup goals. Maradona’s second strike against England in the Mexico World Cup of 1986 was the top choice for Aaron Ramessi among others. Meanwhile, our resident quizmaster The Fantasy Freak, looked back fondly at Papa Bouba Diop’s shock winner against France in 2002.

Domestic football issues are creeping into the community’s thoughts and this week saw us assess the field of the new Premier League recruits. Evs and D1sable were among those to predict a successful Premier League return for Chelsea’s new midfielder and former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. Sherlock Holmes, however, foresee’s a poor debut season for another new Chelsea arrival, Diego Costa.

This week also saw the early launch of the Sky Sports Game, which, this season, includes the addition of a new 3-4-3 formation, along with at testing player price list. Croatia Deserves More Mata and Zepinho were among those to find the player values restrictive. Gigging Order, who topped the Sky component of last season’s Iron Man community tournament, stated that, given the tough pricing, 3-5-2 may well be the formation of choice.

Finally, Irish Madridsta started one of our longest ever discussion threads when he asked for the community’s favourite movie-title and footballer crossovers. There followed an epic multi-page run of some of the most ludicrous movie based puns around, with Applebonkers’ The Quantum of Rod Wallace, Billy Gilmore’s Finding Neymar and Bubz’s 2001 A Space Odemwingie among the many highlights from more than a dozen pages of cinematic word play. The puns flowed at such a rate that The Fantasy Freak even had to abandon his regular pre-match quiz.

The Community Tournaments

Following the quarter final matches an impressive 22 of our Fox league members are in the top 50 of the overall rankings. With 425 points our league leader, Alba Esque, is third overall. Arvin United leads the Fox FFS Deadzone league, while Roscola continues to dominate the Fox moderators and contributors league.

Ceac90 tops the Scout League in the McDonald’s backed Official World Cup game: he also sits fifth in the overall ranks, just five points off the summit.

    Dutch Football ‏@DutchftLeague 3m

Ron Vlaar skipped the Netherlands training and is doubtful for the encounter against Argentina on wednesday.
Nigel de Jong and Leroy Fer completed the warming up with the group and are making progress in their recovery. There is still hope!
Angel Di Maria will not play against Netherlands. Sergio Agüero trained with the group and is likely to start.

I was winning for most of Round 2 but dropped from 8th to 108th after a terrible Round 3 😯

Yeah I was ecstatic when my 3 German defenders got a CS against France, but then Netherlands kept Costa Rica out so it didn't end up benefitting me much at all.

Thoughts on this attempt at a FOX draft for the next round? Contemplating using my WC but need to decide if its worth it. This is where I'm at taking into account possible starters for this round and those who might play in a 3rd/4th place game

    Cilessen
Luiz - Hummels - Rojo - De Vrij (Duarte)
    Muller - Robben - Schurrle - Willian - Perez
    Messi - RVP - Depay

Looks OK. I'd go Neuer for keeper. He's the only one left likely to get bonus. Also perhaps a bit too much rotation risk with Schurrle, Willian, and Depay.

I had Neuer in but was 5K short with all the changes 🙁 Have to see where I can trim some money...

I think Willian will surely start this week but will get a chance to see lineups in regards to him and Schurrle. I'll probably bench Depay and start Perez and if either team fails to make it to the final they'll surely start in the consolation game. Saves me a possible transfer in the next round

But he has a fair point.

I'm thinking Free kicks + Corners( now with Silva gone ) + a possible clean sheet. Without Neymar they're probably going to try and stick it out till the end with defending. Could be a possible 0-0.

Can anyone make a decent case for David Luiz?

Not sure he's the type who'll pick up lots of bonus points so you're going to be needing attacking returns. I know he banged in a free kick against Colombia but that was the first one he's scored in ages.

Do you really want to be relying on attacking points in a World Cup semi final against the Germans? There's other defenders that have been picking up monster points for less money from recovered balls and blocked shots.

Think he'll have a bigger chance at points with no Silva to recover all the balls or block all the shots. His chance of attacking returns is amplified now that he's most likely on direct set pieces.

If Dante comes in surely he'll just smash the recovered balls. Luiz may have to score just to break even with Dante.

Is Luiz on direct set pieces such a big plus? Sure he smashed in a beauty against Colombia but that was the first decent one I've seen from him in absolutely ages.

Most will go with 6 defenders so the big decision is whether to go with 4 MF + 3 FWD or 5 MF + 2 FWD. I've opted for the latter and will aim to play 5-3-2 or 5-4-1

I have Lahm and Kroos in McD (and Mascherano and Sneijder)
Tell me more about why should I be worried about 2 Germans in mid

Okay, another FOX WC draft. Thoughts?

    Neuer
    Luiz Hummels Lahm Howedes Rojo
    Muller Robben
    Messi RVP Higuain

I might even captain Neuer this round. 😯 Crazy? I mean with goals at a minimum now, we're all looking to defenders for points. So why not captain one? With Neuer's save points + probable bonus?

im also thinking of captaining neuer....a Germany clean sheet secures him at least 10 points imo...

this looks great...I imagine you'll use the transfers next round to load up on attackers in the 3rd/4th place play-off, and not bother with defensive transfers?

Probably chicken out and go Messi though. Then Neuer will end up with 12 points and the highest scoring player of the round, and I'll be kicking myself.

Yeap. Probably ditch RVP for someone like Huntelaar?

Well, I can see a clean sheet in the Netherlands Argentina game, but it's hard to predict who will get it. ( Reckon it'll be the Argies ). Out of the 4 teams, the Germans are the most solid defensively. Might as well back 1 team, than spread the risk and get potentially just 1 clean sheet.

I could drop Howedes for Garay/De Vrij I guess.

I disagree with this. Neuer isn't worth the extra cash IMO. A lot more expensive, and against a toothless Brazilian side = not much save points etc. A super cheap Cillessen vs an attacking Argentina is what's more appealing to me. This is just my opinion though.

don't agree...just because they are toothless, doesn't mean they wont take lots of shots...I predict many long range pots for a desperate Brazilian team, all safely into the hands of Manuel Neuer 🙂

Castrol Ranking worst XI of the World Cup (players who have played at least 60 minutes):

    Hart
    Yedlin Pique Balanta Senderos Bedimo
    Najar Taider Coentrao Mahrez
    Hallloran

Out of these, only Halloran and Najar got slightly better than the lowest score of 4.11. There are few noteworthy names there.

Yeah, Coentrao didn't really play midfield, but left back, but as there were no other lowest ranked midfielders than Mahres, Taider and Najar who had played more than 60 minutes, I just moved him to midfield where he has played before to get more of the lowest ranked players in.

Lowest minutes total amongst these players was Coentrao's 65, and apart from him only Senderos, Najar, Halloran and Mahrez got less than 90 minutes, Halloran and Senderos just barely few minutes less than a full match. The rest played at least one full match, Bedimo, Taider, Yedlin and Hart featuring in two or more. Enough time to get some countable positive efforts.

The key here is to identify the good home/away rotations

These are the ones that stand out:

        Stoke/Swansea
        Hull/Burnley
        Palace/Wham

But are you going to trust Hull who will be in the Europa League as well? We've seen how poorly PL teams tend to perform given their hectic schedule. The other two will be pricey-but all in all I agree, it's all about finding our new Joel Ward of next season

You never know what role LVG has in store for Mata. Same goes for Rooney too. So I'd avoid them to start with.

Aguero doesn't have the best of opening fixtures. And as we all know he's made of glass, I don't think his body can cope with all the fixtures they have
