World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 6, Day 1

Germany humiliate Brazil to reach the World Cup final in an unforgettable night of football. Toni Kroos and Andre Schurrle both bag braces, Thomas Muller gets amongst the goals again, while Miroslav Klose breaks the World Cup scoring record in an embarrassing one-sided rout for Joachim Low’s side:

Germany Run Riot
Fantasy managers who loaded up on Joachim Low’s side were richly rewarded as Germany hit the hosts for seven last night. Once again, Thomas Muller was in the points – the Bayern man rewarded his owners with a fifth goal of the tournament after firing Germany’s opener in the 7-1 annihilation. Having served up four goals and an assist in the three group games, the Bayern man’s returns had slowed down over the knockout stages – games against Nigeria and France had produced just a single assist before last night’s strike edged him one behind James Rodriguez in the race for the Golden Boot.

Miroslav Klose vindicated his manager’s decision to hand him a second successive start by prodding home the second, whilst in midfield, Toni Kroos, with a brace, and Sami Khedira, with a goal and assist, also plundered the points. Andre Schurrle’s two-goal salvo off the bench highlighted Germany’s strength in depth but he’d be a real punt for the final – yet to start a match in the tournament, a sub role still looks likely. Low named an unchanged side from the 1-0 win over France and, barring injuries or illness, it seems certain Germany will line up with the same XI on Sunday.

Hummels Knee Concern
Mats Hummels owners will be awaiting any further update after the centre-half was replaced at the break with a knee problem. With two goals and three clean sheets to his name already, the Dortmund centre-half earned significant interest prior to yesterday’s encounter and, speaking to German radio after the match, he went on to say:

“More problems with my knee. We will find out the exact diagnosis [on Wednesday]. There won’t be a horror diagnosis and there is hope that it works again in five days. I will definitely need intensive treatment. If I can’t train on Saturday I wouldn’t go and say I can play on Sunday.”

Elsewhere at the back, Philipp Lahm’s owners were also rewarded. Fielded at right-back once again, the Bayern man delivered a pair of assists, though a late consolation from Oscar proved a bitter blow for those banking on German clean sheet returns as Low’s side were denied a fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Oscar Strike Scant Consolation Hosts
Devoid of star man Neymar and suspended skipper Thiago Silva, Brazil limped out of the tournament in a game that brutally exposed their limitations. A defence that had mustered just one clean sheet in their first five fixtures was plundered time and again – David Luiz earned major investment after producing two goals and an assist in his previous three appearances but he was arguably the most culpable in last night’s humiliation.

Up top, Oscar’s late goal took his tally to two strikes and a pair of assists for the tournament, though Fred once again failed to impress and his starting role is surely under question for Saturday’s third/fourth place play-off after being booed off the pitch by the home fans. While Neymar remains on the sidelines, Silva, at least, will be back for the weekend match – Phil Scolari reckons Brazil still have ”something to play for” but he has a real job on his hands to lift morale and inspire a face-saving performance as he looks to recover from one of the worst results in Brazil’s football history.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Brazil produced 46 recovered balls to Germany’s 34. David Luiz led the way with 11, fellow centre-half Dante and midfielder Luiz Gustavo both managed eight, whilst Marcelo produced five. Germany’s leading men were Philipp Lahm (seven), Benedikt Howedes (six), Jerome Boateng and Bastian Schweinsteiger (both five).

Quite a bit of debate about this. Which was the bigger shock result in this world cup? Holland hammering Spain or last night?

last night as Spain were poor but not terrible. Holland were excellent.

Last night Germany were excellent but for a semi final team of Brazil's pedigree to lose by that amount and in that manner at that stage in the tournament was unbelievable. It was one of the worst World Cup displays I've ever seen and the fact that it was Brazil in a semi final at home must make it the most shocking.

Its a result, like 1950, that will live forever in the memory. Spain's defeat is merely a footnote in comparison.

This is a bigger shock because of the magnitude of the defeat....7 goals!!!!! Also, this is Brazil's home world cup so that makes it even more shocking...

Also, the Spain v Netherlands game was 1-1 at HT, very tight at that point...Spain just capitulated when the Netherlands took the lead....they were poor

Brazil were shocking from the get go...conceding 4 goals in 6 minutes is just absurd...that sequence in itself was surreal...

Last night, although if you only saw 10mins of that game you would understand why that happened, organized football prevailed over a Brazil team that didn´t impress that much throughout the tournament.

      Holland beating Spain

For me, Brazil have got lucky at times and definately taken advantage as the home team, and it's one of the worst starting 11's for them in some years. Letting in 7 was surprising, yes.

But the complete capitulation of a National Team that had dominated major competitions for most of the decade, with the same group of players, has to be the shock for me. Who could have predited Spain falling apart like that in the first game?

The Spanish defeat (and exit) is more significant IMO as it heralds the end of a style of tiki taka football that influenced the world. Brazil, far more emotionally devastating on the night, but everyone knew this was a team that was average with a couple of exceptions

i found spain more shocking, last night just seems so as it's a semi-final. you can count brazil's top international on one finger, whilst one hand wouldn't be enough to count spain's.

i'm finding it almost impossible to put it into words but unique circumstances turn a standard 3-0 loss into a 7-1 (between bigger sides, obviously a big team thrashing a little team doesnt have that much to it).
arsenal have one unique circumstance, their manager. wenger has one way and one way only, he always wants to win and do so playing the same way. there will never be a, "ok this match is gone let's only lose 3-0." if anything the opposite happens, they become more open chasing a more unlikely result and end up losing 6-1 or something. he correctly imo views it as just 1 loss (results > scores imo).
another unique circumstance was last night. brazil being brazil are always under ridiculous pressure to win the world cup, there's almost an expectation to win it. add in them being the hosts and it's magnified. add in the social/political problems and it's a new level of pressure on top of that. they simply have to win the world cup, it's unthinkable not to, fear is added to the equation and unique denail when players would otherwise accept it's not going to be their night. they HAD to win. germany didn't have to win last night, germany didn't have to win in front of their home crowd in 2006 and france didn't have to win in 1998.
as each goal went in they became more flustered, more desperate, more open, more in denial that they wouldn't win, more panicked on the ball, more unable to think of more drilled things like positioning. they were a hysteric mess who even at 4-0 down refused to contemplate that they would not win the match. everything snowballed. half time was a much needed bucket of cold water/slap in the face of the hysteric mess. it was too late of course by then but say it was 90mins with no half time to try and calm the players and talk some sense i think it could have been 10-0, especially if germany didn't so clearly relax in midfield and get blasé at the back.
anyway yeah, i think that's the reason the score was so extreme. say brazil were italy with the same 11-14 players with the same manager i reckon they lose 2-1 or 3-1

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

We've been turning our attention to the Premier League and next season's set piece takers.

I've started updating our set piece takers page here but am keen to get some more input, particularly from fans of some of the promoted sides.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/premiership-set-piece-takers/

In addition, how much do you look for set piece taking attributes when selecting a squad?

I always look to Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man C and ManU's set piece takers as they all have players that regularly win penalties against weaker defences. the lower table sides rarely win penalties so are of less interest.

Basically whoever is penalty taker with a team consisting of Ashley young and Januzaj has to be snapped up. 😉

On FFS it seems that we usually place quite a lot of emphasis on set piece takers when selecting our initial squads...

I'll most likely pick one of the promoted teams' set piece takers as my 5th mid...

I always like to have penalty taking forwards... (bar Suarez that is)

Trippier looks essential given his set piece duties...

I look at set piece takers as much for their reliability of starts as their likelihood of gaining extra points, particularly from corners or IFKs, direct FKs and pens I hope will get more points, though you tend to pay that bit extra for them.
Definitely the reliability that is more important, so team Captains also come into my reckoning.

Van Gaal waits on van Persie

Louis van Gaal is hoping Robin van Persie will be fit to lead the Netherlands into World Cup semi-final combat with Argentina on Wednesday.

Germany await the victors in Sunday's showpiece event following their unbelievable 7-1 annihilation of Brazil and Manchester United's incoming manager is plotting to mastermind another triumph against Lionel Messi and co to ensure the Dutch reach a second successive final. Van Persie has been troubled with a stomach complaint but will be given every opportunity to start in Sao Paulo.

"Robin has a stomach problem," confirmed van Gaal. "An intestinal problem. I don’t know [if he will play] but I will decide. Van Persie is our captain so he is very important to us. In principle, my captain always plays, but he has to be fit."

Ron Vlaar, Leroy Fer and Nigel De Jong have all trained with the coach explaining it will be a 'miracle' if the latter can overcome the groin injury that had threatened to rule him out of the entire tournament. Jasper Cillessen keeps his place in goal, despite Tim Krul's heroics in the penalty shoot-out win over Costa Rica.

Argentina and Messi represent difficult opponents after notching five consecutive victories during the World Cup finals and are flying the flag for South America.

"I don’t think there is a favourite," van Gaal insisted when asked to assess the game. "The countries are at the same level.

"It’s a 50-50 match and we have to be a bit lucky too," he admitted.

"Messi has been voted the world’s best player before and you don’t get that for nothing. He has always found it hard to show his form at international level. He wants to do it at this tournament and we want to stop him. That will be a challenge."

Angel Di Maria is sidelined after sustaining an injury against Belgium with Enzo Perez likely to take the winger's place. Marcos Rojo is back from suspension and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero could return.

"The Netherlands have a brilliant coach," commented Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella. "He is able to vary his tactical schemes and has shown that throughout his career, which is not a bad thing at all. He seems like a very intelligent person."

So, not sure if it's been pointed out, but I think you can pick any team you want for the final?

Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Howedes, Garay, Demi, Kroos, Lahm, Masha, Muller, Messi

plus fillers (inc 1.5-ers) costs 89.5m.

            So yeah, there's the template.

Right OK don't shoot me I just think people are getting carried away with Brazil's performance last night.

"Worst world cup displays I've ever seen" - Jonty. I think people are overreacting with the hyperbole surrounding the display. Here are the match facts:

              Shots on target 13:12
              .............Shots 18:14
              .............fouls 11:14
              ........posession 51:49
              ..............saves 5:12

The stats show a surprisingly even game with the saves being the main difference between the teams.

By the way the first column is Brazil's stats NOT Germany's.

Ps I am not saying Brazil deserved to win the game just that it was not as bad a performance as people are making out. Sure it was a terrible result, probably the worst result in world cup history but being Irish we can still remember Germany doing this to us in Qualifying in Dublin where they scored 6 goals from 7 shots on target, they are ruthless on the counter attack.

I agree re the stats but I do think that I have seen much worse performances down the years from big teams. Brazil should have scored at least three themselves with some real sitters missed.

As I say the Germans are clinical on the counter attack a bit like Holland were v Spain. If Casilas had not made those mistakes to put Holland 3-1 up then Spain would not have been chasing the game and they might even have won it as up to those mistakes Spain were by far the better team on the night in that game.

I definitely agree this was the worst result in world cup history but not the worst performance

This WAS the worst result in world cup history, I don't think anything compares to it.

It was a mediocre attacking performance from Brazil but they still managed 18 shots and they weren't totally abject, however their defending and organisation was unbelievable, they just didn't mark any players, look at the very first goal, Muller on the edge of the 6 yard box completely free to tap it in.

Germany could have scored 15 if they had kept going as they did in the first half, I genuinely think they went a bit easy on Brazil towards the end, Schurrle just missed that memo coming off the bench to score 2 more..

It was the worst defensive performance I've ever seen by such a big team in such a big game.

Since Guardiola has gone to Bayern the Tikka Takka football has developed into a more productive game where 70% of passes are wasted. a new era of playing style has arrived and it will take some time before opponents find a plan to smother it. You witnessed a tall, physical, fit technical, composed, clever and direct way of winning last night.

The reason I went looking for the stats was that I actually admired a lot of Brazil's attacking football in the second half and thought they should have had at least three goals and probably closer to 4/5.

I think some of the performances where big teams get knocked out by minnows like Costa Rica have been worse in this world cup never mind taking into account other world cups. Sure it was not a good performance but I just don't buy that it is the worst performance in the history of the world cup.

I think in the second half Germany took their foot off the pedal knowing they'd already qualified and didn't want to risk injury/suspension to any key players. Brazil managed to launch a few attacks but in effect the match only lasted 30 minutes.

It wasn't the worst performance in the world cup, but it was the biggest mismatch in the history of the world cup final stages, and at that stage of the tournament you expect one of the best performances of those players' careers. Not only did they not give their best, they failed spectacularly and hilariously (defensively and positionally anyway).

So in the context of what match it was, who and where it was, how it happened, I think it's the most disappointing performance in history. Even if it was up against one of the best performances I've ever seen from a national side at that stage.

Their defence was appalling though. That certainly sticks with me and when Germany were 5-0 up at half time with the game already over I don't think many took the second half too seriously. The way they capitulated in that first half and rolled over for the Germans is simply astounding.

As everyone says stats do not tell the whole story. Look at the emotion on the players' faces, the game itself, their body language and the crowd. Then wait 30 years and come back and ask the question - what is the most memorable defeat in World Cup history? Last night's match will be mentioned I guarantee.

The fact that it was a semi final at home involving the hosts, who are Brazil, just adds to the utter wretchedness of their play. The stats may show an even game, but it was in reality one of the most uneven games in World Cup history.

Yes, but that was because of the Germans' superior positional sense. They were outstanding, last night.

I agree Jonty, it will be the most memorable defeat as it is the worst result in the history of the world cup imo but I still don't think it was the worst performance.

It was the worst performance at a World Cup semi final stage I've seen - and my viewing goes back to 1986. there may have been worse before.

Its the level of match and the team involved that make it such a shocking performance. Just look at that fourth goal in particular...Brazil had actually given up moving by that point.

Fair enough Jonty if you are just going on semi final performances you might be right as while teams generally put in dour abject performances in semi finals leading to low scoring games often resulting in penalties these abject attacking performances would not quite be as poor as Brazil's last night.

I'm factoring in the team involved and the stage in the tournament. If Cameroon or or Hondurus get hammered you are starting from a low base. I think its a far worse defeat for a team of great stature to play like a minnow than a minnow to play like a minnow. It's semantics of what is meant by 'worst' but for a good team to play that badly is 'worse' in my books, rather than a bad team playing badly.

I know this isn't a vintage Brazil, but their heads dropped and they gave up for huge portions of the game. Even with their best attacks they managed just one goal.

I do agree with most of you sentiments Jonty.

I wonder would their heads have dropped if their leaders in the team Neymar, Tiago and Alves were playing? I guess we'll never know.

I suspect not....which makes it a perfect storm of a result. Everything conspired against Brazil, they were leaderless, had the weight of the nation on the shoulders and up against an excellent Germany. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players need counselling after that defeat- they were utterly crushed psychologically.

do you know what the first half stats were? i can barely remember a brazil shot first half whilst germany were 5-0 up. i think this really was a 6 goal win in nature as well tbh, only natural easing off the accelerator has created an illusion otherwise

He has such massive potential that if he changed his attitude in training he could be one of Europe’s best players in his position. The only way Ozil becomes a real viable prospect is if he gets pens imo and I don't see Arteta being dropped anytime soon so not much chance of that. I do think he will go much better next season though.

So assuming all 3 players start tonight which one of these 4 would you leave out:

              A - De Vrij
              B - Rojo
              C - Blind
              D - 8 points

I've won my mini league so it's all about finishing as high up the overall table as possible

Bit of a dilemma lads, so I've took out Ozil (7) and Dante (4) for Sneijder and Masherano.

I still have De Vrij on the bench, would you swap him out for Schweinstger (8)?

Or would you swap him out for Demi or Garay? Currently I still have Cillisen, Demi, Garay, Mash, Sneijder and Messi.

Think Santi might push for a move if Alexis joins.

              Man City anyone?

Would rather be on the bench of title contenders with an incredibly high wage. Considering it's David Silva who is first choice and can get injured often, there's a good chance he'll get gametime.

So if Arsenal sign Sanchez and then Remy quickly after, would this affect Sanchez's classification in FPL do we think? i.e MD or FW

The main debate is what his price will be (roughly 9-10m), will he start? Where does this leave Walcott?!

I think his versatillity will make sure he plays. Walcott will have to fight his way back after injury. No reason either of them can't go up front. Hoping for 10 or less espcially if classed as a FW.

That'd be one way of fixing the midfield problem!

If this comes off as well surely this will be one of the best close seasons for the FPL, signings wise, in recent history.

I agree mate it's gonna be epic... Man u will do well as they don't have any European football. LVG is a genius and will get us back into top 4 ... But ur right it's gonna be super tight

If I was a manager of a Club...before deciding on whether to purchase a player or not..I would've tried playing him on FIFA...wonder if managers actually do that..

Started a Southampton career yesterday, sold Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Lovren, Schneiderlin etc and brought in some young guys like Tadic, Origi, Fabian Johnson (BEAST) and Kongolo. Building for the future 😎
