Louis Van Gaal rolls out a 3-4-1-2 formation in his first match in charge of United. Erik Lamela scores twice from a central role as Spurs register their first win under Mauricio Pochettino. Brendan Rodgers highlights Philippe Coutinho as a key player for Liverpool for the season ahead, Petr Cech returns to action for Chelsea, whilst Mauro Zarate grabs his first goal for new club West Ham:

Van Gaal Opts for Three at the Back in United Rout
The Dutchman’s tenure as Red Devils boss got off to the perfect start last night, with a 7-0 demolition of LA Galaxy. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Reece James all scored twice, whilst Danny Welbeck also found the net, though the main talking point surrounded United’s new formation.

Van Gaal immediately installed the 3-4-1-2 system he utilised during the recent World Cup with Holland and fielded new boys Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera (voted Man of the Match on his debut) in the midfield four, with Juan Mata afforded the role in “the hole” behind Rooney and Welbeck. After the match, the new man in charge indicated he’s determined to forge ahead with the new formation in his first year at the helm:

“When you want to change a system, you must start at once. We don’t have time to prepare for other things. The other system they can play is 4-3-3 and they have played it for many years. I can change it back if it doesn’t work. With the quality of the players we have, I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play with two strikers. We have four number 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes. I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system. When I see my team playing a new system, it is better to win 7-0 than to lose because the players will then doubt the system. But now I don’t have that problem.”

Lamela at the Double
Last season’s big-money signing is already finding his form under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino. Handed the role in “the hole” behind Roberto Soldado, with Christian Eriksen and Aaron Lennon on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1, the Argentine scored twice in the opening 45 minutes before his manager made wholesale changes at the break. Ben Davies made his debut after completing a move from Swansea, whilst Andros Townsend emerged from the bench to fire a late winner, but it was Lamela who was the subject of his manager’s post-match praise after impressing in his new central role:

“We expect a lot from him, he’s an unbelievable player. He needs to show us that he deserves to play, but at the moment we are happy with his performance.”

Rodgers Praise for Coutinho
Liverpool suffered a late 1-0 loss to Roma last night after Marco Borriello fired a late winner for the Italian outfit. Sebastian Coates recovered from long-term injury to take his place in the starting line-up alongside fit-again Jose Enrique as the defensive options increase for Brendan Rodgers, whilst Emre Can recovered from a calf complaint to appear as a sub. The Reds boss quickly played down a shoulder problem for Fabio Borini after the Italian was forced off with just 11 minutes on the clock – with a possible move to Sunderland on the horizon, Rodgers went on to say He’ll miss a few days of training, he’s only bruised it”.

In spite of the 1-0 loss, Rodgers took time after the game to single out Philippe Coutinho. Despite drafting in a number of options in the final third over the summer so far, the Brazilian is clearly regarded as vital for the campaign ahead as the Merseysiders look to cope with the exit of Luis Suarez:

“Coutinho is the brain in our team, the continuity player. He might not score many goals, but he’s a wonderful reference for the team. He is the one that gets the team ticking, gets the movement in front of the ball. He goes and gets on the ball. He’s a fantastic talent for such a young player and he’s still gaining his fitness. He makes the crowd get off their seat. For someone so small, he’s very tough and robust. He’s a wonderful technician that has a great idea, tactically, of the game.”

N’Zogbia Back on the Radar
Having returned from long-term injury in time for Villa’s first pre-season friendly, the forgotten winger continued to stake a claim with a goal in last night’s 2-0 win over Dallas. Handed dead-ball duties by Paul Lambert, the Frenchman fired home his side’s second strike, whilst Andreas Weimann was also in the goals to add to his pair of assists in the first match – Darren Bent now has two strikes and an assist in two appearances after teeing up the Austrian for the opener.

Cech Returns to Action for Blues
The Chelsea stopper played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 with Austrian side WAC RZ Pelletts yesterday. Jose Mourinho handed new boy Filipe Luis a 60-minute debut and watched on as youngster Jeremie Boga grabbed a late equalizer for the Blues but, from a Fantasy perspective, Cech’s recovery heightens the speculation surrounding the Chelsea number one stopper situation for next term. With Thibaut Courtois set to remain at the Bridge after three years on loan at Atletico Madrid, Mourinho remained non-committal on his plans:

“My situation for the season is fantastic. To have Cech and Courtois means we have the best young goalkeeper in the world and one of the top-three or five most experienced keepers. For me and Chelsea, it’s perfect. Maybe one of them won’t be happy but the Chelsea supporters will be happy and they’re more important than players.”

Murray Nets Again for Eagles
The Palace striker notched his third goal in two pre-season appearances in last night’s draw against Columbus Crew to serve a reminder of his budget potential for the Eagles. Murray was partnered by Dwight Gayle up front in a 4-4-2 and continued the form that saw him bag a brace in the opening friendly against GAK Graz, though it was Tony Pulis’ backline that will be of more interest to Fantasy managers – Jerome Williams was handed a chance at left-back by the Eagles boss and with Joel Ward shifting to the right, Adrian Mariappa was utilised as a second-half substitute, raising concerns over his starting berth for the season ahead.

Zarate Opens Hammers Account
The West Ham summer signing needed just 30 minutes to dazzle in yesterday’s 2-1 loss against New Zealand side Wellington. Emerging from the bench on the hour mark, Zarate grabbed his first goal for Big Sam’s side and turned in an impressive display, whilst Matt Jarvis’ assist for the Hammers’ consolation means he has played a part in all three of the club’s pre-season strikes thus far. Allardyce already has a trio of injury worries, though. Andy Carroll misses the overseas tour due to an ankle injury, whilst Cheikhou Kouyate (ankle) and James Tomkins (groin) are also sidelined for Saturday’s clash with Sydney.

        Good team.

*Krul being wasted on the bench, free up 0.5 cash
*I know Jelly's fixtures are good, but Hull don't score an awful amount of goals and with Europa around,I'm not sold on him. Try upgrading to a decent striker
*Don't like Debuchy due to his fixtures but can understand his price appeal

*Going in with Guzan as the only keeper is a HUGE risk imo. (unless you don't wildcard in gw4)
*As you said Lamela/Eriksen require monitoring over pre season
*I would downgrade Nasri to Siggy/Arnie and upgrade Giroud to Rooney as there is no point in wasting a transfer

this, never plan your transfers in advance. Planning one for gw2 is okay, but planning one for lets say gw5, is foolish because nothing long term is certain in fpl

        *Like the De Jong punt!

*Massive benching dilemma every week, downgrade one of siggy/arnie to a guaranteed 4.5 mid starter
*Use the spare cash to upgrade your defense. Cameron to Huth/Pieters and Upson to Davies won't be bad moves to start off with 🙂

    Lessons learnt from 2013/2014 season.

Last season (about 1/2 way through) I really started playing FPL properly. FFS helped me tremendously on understanding how to get the best out of being a fantasy manager, that being said, I wasn't afraid to tinker and put what I "thought" were good ideas into practice. I didn't finish with a great ranking at all, 300K odd - but the experience that I gained was invaluable:

    1. Too much info (as with too little info) is also a very bad thing, don't trend - make calculated decisions. 80% of the info online, you need to take with a pinch of salt...and tequila.
    2. Plan up to 6 GW's ahead - Hits for 1 - 2 GW's seldom pay off.
    3. DON'T make transfers too early in the week.
    4. A cheap defense with 4.0 and 4.5 only - will hurt you. spread the love around a decently balanced team.
    5. Hits for defenders... erm, no - you need a cleany to pay for the hit, even then you are on 0 for the GW - if it is a long term prospect, that is another story.
    6. Rotation, sucks - well in my case, the points were mostly benched. For me this year - 3 starters in defense each week and a bench with preferred sub order. Swopping out keepers and defenders each week...aint nobody got time for that.
    7. 38 GW's - if you do badly in one, don't go ape and take -16 point hit. There is plenty of time to catch up - this is "a marathon, not a sprint" - keep that in mind.
    7. Peanut butter and Mayo is surprisingly tasty.

Therefore, I renewed my membership this year and I am keen to put all I have learned into practice once again, maybe even trying some peanut butter and anchovies.

Thanks for a great site and the ability to share my 30 year old love for Football with like minded junkies.

      1. +Treat every transfer like A HIT. If you don't think it will get you at least 4 points immediately, don't do it.+ (for late season)
      2. Use one free transfer per gameweek tops, do not take hits if you can't justify it logically.
      3. Keep a player you've transferred in for at least few matches.
      4. A hit should be worthwhile for more than one gameweek.
      5. Don't take hits for punts.
      6. Don't focus too much on price changes, 4 points is often better than 0.1m.
      7. Save vanilla WC for after the Jan WC.
      8. Think clearly, don't get caught up in "chasing last week's points".
      9. Sleep on a big transfer decision before making it.
      10. Never make transfers for players who still have matches to play before the next PL match. Last thing you want is to bring someone in early and then have to take a hit due to injuries/suspensions from late/midweek games (looking at you Aguero).
      11. Focus on nailed on players.
      12. Wait for official injury confirmation from the club before knee-jerking and ditching a good player.
      13. Be mindful of the exact price when a player is set to drop as oftentimes that single 0.1m doesn't change your selling price yet.

Biggest things I learnt was never take out a player on form and similarly, don't bring in a player back from injury until he shows some form.

Also the Gods can be cruel, I had my team in great shape one week when my rivals looked all at sea. It was my worst GW ever and my rival killed it. It happens. Move on.

Bringing Aguero in after his injury, hurt my points terribly - and then he was injured again... way too eager to get him in and not a good call at all.

As for the Gods being cruel, I think that is an element we cannot work around, some times things just don't go your way - such is life. In FPL, you need a fair amount of luck as well, no amount of planning or stats or visions you may have had can make up for that.

can any Southampton fans, or any other fans, tell me what the chances are of Matt Targett holding down the LB spot....I read Koeman is giving him a chance in pre-season...

could be a steal at 4m....

I had him in a draft side, but the chances are a little slim for now. If he gets a good amount of game time in pre-season and has some good form then he could take the starting spot, but it's too difficult to know yet. Keep your eye on him over pre-season.

I reckon he will be given a chance at some stage of the season similar to what was done with Shaw and Chambers. The fact that there are no nailed on 4m defenders means I'm willing to take a chance on him

I checked out the Southampton forum a little earlier and they seem to think Targett will be LB with Clyne/Chambers battling for RB position. They aren't ITK though, and don't know what the manager will do. All you can do and see if it becomes clear between now and GW1

Only Clyne can play LB but he's much better at RB. So it would make sense.

I know a lot of people are saying wisdom won't play now, and I agree with the logic.

The only thing that confuses me is why liverpool (and wisdom himself) would allow such a loan move if he wasn't going to get game time??

      Too many absolutes here.

Maybe he gets 15/20 appearances total?
This is certainly better than 5 max at Liverpool.

At WBA perhaps he flls in at FB/CB where needed & if he plays well he'll earn a full-time spot...

All this "nailed on" vs. "won't play" talk is silly; can't it be somewhere in the middle?

I'm sure Kagawa thought about that when he went to United. At that point RVP hadn't been bought yet.

Same can be said of Moses, he signed, then Rodgers still bought other players.

It happens all the time. Players might be a sure starter when they sign, then two weeks later other possible transfer targets pop up. Nothing wrong with a bit of competition from a managers perspective.

he's nailed on though. Imagine that you team faces an injury crisis and you need someone to step in I'd rather have Tiote than gamble on a 4.5m midfielder from a promoted team from gameweek 1 only for him to be dropped after a few games.

    Cheap mids vs premium defs!

You have so many viable options in midfield, but most of them are expensive (8+ million).

If you're going for the likes of Siggy, Arnie, Shelvey as your 4th mid, better get Cahill, Shaw, Koscielny or any other premium def and play 4-3-3.
I know it's boring, but despite the bonusing system change that cripples the appeal of the defenders a bit, those premium defs would still outscore the mid-to-low-price-bracket mids IMO.

Chelsea would most probably get a CS in half of their games just like last year and Terry is subscribed for 3/4 goals a season and a add assist or two.

Inspired by the last hot-topic from Jonty about a team with only top 4 sides in it, I think I might go the boring way of having 4 premium defs at the back.

    What do you think?

Agree, but do you really expect your 5.5-6.5mil midfielders to bring you points each other week?
What is the chance that the one you choose for 4th mid becomes the new Ramsey?

New bonus system boost the appeal of the full backs as well..

Premium defs are just the safer option IMO!

I have 3 mid priced mids. I'm hoping one of them becomes the next Ramsey and the others I can downgrade to the essential budget mid and the next big hitting midfielder.

I find that defenders from good teams tend to pick up in the second half of the year rather than straight away. I'm happy to keep it cheap at the back for the time being.

Not saying that there is a right or wrong way here. Just different tactics, yours might well end up better but we won't find out for a while yet.

I found myself a lovely template 3-4-3, yet the power of tinkering keeps pushing me back to the more adventurous 3-5-2 formation. And I find that I actually rather like it 😛

    Krul
    Shaw Luis Davies
Sanchez Hazard Mata De Jong Siggy
    Rooney Dzeko

Bench (IGNORE): Elliot, Zamora, Mariappa, Wisdom

A very strong midfield I think, with a nice mix of tried-and-tested and exciting new boys. I also think that it has a good flexibility, in that I can quite easily downgrade an underperforming premium mid to Albrighton, and upgrade Zamora straight to an 8.5 (Giroud/Bony) in case of catastrophic failure.

In defence I've covered three strong defences with United, Chelsea and Spurs.

I can understand the concern that the bench is cheap as chips, but I suppose I'd rather have a strong XI than a mediocre XV.

    Thoughts?
