Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

Matt Targett: A Genuine 4.0 Prospect?

As enthusiasm for Andre Wisdom had dwindled, amongst rumours that WBA will make a bid for another RB, some have begun to turn to the prospect of 18 year old Southampton left back Matt Targett, who has been scouted by the big clubs over the last couple of years.

There are a few things to consider:
He is clearly being tested. He has been included in all of our friendlies so far and his delivery looks good. The club are clearly interested in trying him to see where his progress is. According to those who regularly watch the development team, he is probably a superior defender to Shaw but perhaps doesn't get forward in the same way. However, we are yet to play a team of any serious quality in preseason so it is difficult to work out first XIs.

Secondly, he has never started in the Premier League. When Shaw came in, he was eased in, perhaps earlier than anticipated, largely because of Danny Fox's continued mistakes and shocking performances. I honestly think Clyne covering left back would do a much better job than Fox and the urgency to bring in a young left back would not be the same.

We are in the market for a LB, according to media reports. I don't know how much this is driven by their assumption that we will replace Shaw or how much of it is genuine interest. However, even if Targett were to make it into the first team, we can expect that Saints would want a left back to cover him, rather than relying purely on right sided players.

So having sat on the fence, what do I think it comes down to?

The final pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen at St Marys. The final pre-season game is always played at St Marys - a trophy is involved, the new home kit will be worn for the first time by the players, and tickets are cheapish to encourage attendance. It is normally taken pretty seriously. I would GUESS that Koeman's first XI there would be a pretty good indication of his plan going forward. If Targett starts that game, I think we have a genuine 4.0 punt on our hands. Until then, for the various factors listed above, it is incredibly risky. It's too early to be enthusiastic.

What do you think of Lloyd Isgrove's chances of becoming a regular starter? Could be a useful 5th midfielder if he does.

I see that, like Matt Targett, he has played in the first three friendlies and that Koeman has spoken well of both of them.

(I suppose that we may have to wait for that final pre-season match before we find out about both).

The 3 World Cup winners will probably miss our opening game of the EPL season because Wenger has given them an extended break.

Wenger says: "For the first game, I don't think they will be ready for August 16. They come back beginning on August 11. All three."

    Mannone / Krul

    Cahill Debuchy B.Davies (Wisdom B.Jones)

    DeJong Sanchez Fabregas Mata (Poyet)

    Rooney Dzeko Borini

I quite like something around this mould, Borini depends on Sunderland definitely getting him. I'm also not decided on Dzeko or Bony. I think Bony will get more goals but it's more fashionable to get Dzeko because he plays for ManCity

What could bite me is the too many new PL players. I'm guessing most people will bring that up as a criticism?

Technically Dinamo Zagreb were in The 2013-14 CL, they just didn't make it to the group stage 😉

Also have a suggestion for the Quiz, you could put all the questions on one long post, everyone can answer there. The winner is the one with the most right answers with time being the tiebreaker.

Well all the other teams made it to the group stages, so the fact that it was implied was very obvious

Good suggestion, but its only 7 posts after all. If I do that, then most people won't find out when and where the quiz is going on

I'm looking at a draft, and it does not look pirdy as everyone elses, nor full of the same, ahem talent. Or even good on points per million spend for players. But it does allow the flexibility of easily downgrading when players emerge and avoids the panic of upgrading. The defense is cheap as chips though, something had to give. They rotate well though and have nice fixtures.

    Mannone, Myhill

    O'Shea, Coloccini, Taylor, Wisdom, Cameron

    Hazard, Siggurdsson, Sanchez, Snodgrass, Barton

    RVP, Pelle, Aguero

So basically, the top player from the teams I think will do well and who also generally dominate set pieces for their respective teams.

It is some tradeoff though, to get Aguero over Silva/Nasri, RVP over Rooney/Mata etc. Your sacrificing allot, but on the other hand, no awkward moment of panic if Aguero/RVP/Sanchez actually stay fit and firing.

Worth it or is your bang for buck better off spent on players like Mata/Rooney/Silva etc and spreading the love?

Aguero/RVP are funny one's. Injury prone messes, but probably the two best finishers who are also on set pieces and the main "men" . They are capable of outscoring their compatriots in the premium striker bracket by a good bit, if they can stay fit.

It's the "if" that gets you most seasons. Until they actually do stay fit, in which case it is a rush to get them into teams.

At the moment they are both fit as far as i'm aware, which is a bit of a headache.

To be fair, Sanchez has the physical make up for the premier league, where pace counts for allot. Pace and finishing in the league usually does the trick for new players, e.g. Torres, Aguero etc in that mold.

      Debuchy/De Laet/Chester/Cameron/Vlaar
      Toure/Hazard/Davis/Mirallas/Albrighton
      Sturridge/Augero/Ings

Any views on my weakest area?

Debating whether or not Toure is worth the outlay this year or if I should drop him for Mata and then put Rooney in to begin with and leave some in the bank to draft Augero in if necessary.

but it is silly to use a transfer on them in gw2 when it can be used for better uses. IE getting the form budget player you missed. Plus Man UTD away is not as difficult as it once was, look at their defence history from last season at OT

Transfer speculations today. Apologies if you've heard these before:

Leicester City are lining up a loan move for Tottenham playmaker Lewis Holtby. (Daily Express)

West Brom are chasing a second Costa Rica World Cup star in Deportivo Saprissa midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda (Daily Express).

Manchester United are said to be planning a move for Dutch youngster Memphis Depay. (Metro)

Chelsea have began work on the possibility of signing Real Madrid outcast Raphael Varane. (Metro)

Most of the news today seemingly is players and managers vehemently saying they're not moving club.

The injury to Carrol gives us perfect budget striker in the 3 5 2 system in the name of the 4.5m Vaz Te.

Amazing that the highest scoring player in the league is looking like he might be a differential ðŸ˜

    G'day all,

First time member, so hoping for a little input into my "current" team, I stress current as it will no doubt change over the next few weeks. Will be fielding a 3-4-3 I reckon although I am tempted by a 3-5-2 given the lack of value for money up top. I think it is pretty well balanced thus far.

    De Gea (Guzan)
    Luis, Cameron, Shaw (Bruce, Targett)
Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Snoddy (El Ahmadi)
    RVP, Dzeko, Diouf

Let me know what ya reckon. Cheers

      Initial thoughts are:

      - Don't like double United defence
      - Both your sub defenders aren't nailed on.
      - Having to play 2 of Snod, El Ahmadi, Diouf is a bit...well....ya know.
      - Having RVP + Haz + Sanchez are killing your budget really.

How is this shower of sh*te shaping up lads? Have tinkered a little but always seem to end up with very slight variations of:

    Krul - Foster

    Cahill - Shaw - B.Davies - Naylor - Wisdom

Hazard - Sir Aaron of Ramsey - Eriksen - Sig - Albrighton

    Rooney - Dzeko - Giroud

Did have Ozil instead of Ramsey but switched after Wengers comments.

    Thoguhts?

      Krul with Mannone
      Cahill, Shaw - too expensive
      Ramsey - hard fix
Sig - gone off the boil
Albrighton - better 5th mid needed
      Gru - tough fix

      3/10

Defence is a little expensive I guess.

Krul/Foster gives SUN, avl, CPL, EVE, HUL, BUR over first 6 whilst Mannone is home to United and Spurs....not ideal.

Also don't agree with Sig going 'off the boil' .... he's just moved!

Pretty standard, which probably ain't a bad thing. Dzeko would be a worry though, he is rotation fodder and not assured of his place when Aguero is fit.
