The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

Anyone else a bit underwhelmed with liverpools signings so far? Dont get me wrong they are decent players but they arent exactly world class stars are they?

Can't exactly buy 'World Class' players, I think people around here underrate Lallana, Lovren will strengthen the back four beyond his own capabilities while Can and Markovic are more so ones for the future, bags of potential but they won't be certain starters.

Lambo will be a utility player, Lallana and Lovren are the main signings of them all, because they're both excellent players but they'll have the biggest impact immediately and will no doubt start most games.

Lovren is pure class, loved him @ Lyon and was surprised for how cheap sotton managed to get him. The difference he made in the defence last year was incredible. When he was injured or didn't play the sotton defence were all over the place however with him they looked pretty solid.

      Solid signing.

Well, sanchez for one..i think Shaqiri is one too. I don't believe in 'world class', but in this case it's just a player who's played for a top club at a high level for years and is a marque signing, someone a top club would normally get but you did. Like arsenal did with ozil. United did with Veron.

The problem for me is the players they buy who might never play. Can, Markovic need to make an impact. Rodgers has bought players like alberto, borini, llori, aspas who haven't even ever played, at least get something out of them, than just own them to see if they improve and are ready. At least allen came into the team when he was needed and did well, he's not been worth the money, but he might in time. And I think they need a big signing, a player who has played at the top and can do it straight away that isn't someone from southampton. Shaqiri would big a great signing. I think if they get him it's a good window, if they don't it's underwhelming.

Plus 1, I think you're spot on, but I think Rodgers has been relieved of transfer selection for now, Can and Markovic will be eased in and in the first season I can't see them making a massive impact, we need someone of real quality to fill the Suarez sized void. Shaqiri is wildly incosistent though, and has a very poor final ball.

I think Sanchez would have been perfect, but by all accounts it was London that persuaded him..to be honest, I've not seen anything of Shaqiri really, or Can, or Markovic, so not sure why I make long posts about these things. The difference with Shaqiri is that he's played at a higher level than the others, perhaps more mature, obviously massively ambitious with lots of potential. Can and Markovic could flop, but it's more likely we'll still know about Shaqiri in ten years time. Someone on the radio was saying sanchez is inconsistent, and only a few seasons ago suarez was in front of goal (for liverpool in terms of chances missed).

Why can't Markovic and Can make an impact? I don't mean be the main players, but at least be crucial to the team, as sturridge and coutinho quickly became within weeks. I just have the perception of a lot of liverpool players coming in, and this goes back to the benitez time, of not even being given a chance, like spending 10m on 3 players is nothing. It all adds up. Rodgers is a good coach, I'm sure if players are trusted to play they will be good, just seems like a lot aren't. Henderson has only become so good because of the confidence given to him by being a starter, and the amount of game time he gets.

Not exclusive to liverpool, it does annoy me though. I'm one of the few man united fans who won't laugh at Bebe, and has wanted to see him be in the team for years. (he's gone now) Same with Nick Powell and Zaha. Some players who I spent energy being excited about lose their chance just in training and it's disappointing.

Carroll and Downing were never THAT good. Lovren is pretty close to world class imo and Lallana is twice the player Downing ever has been. I think people only think the signings have been underwhelming because they havent replaced Suarez but how do you replace him?

Eriksen's share of set pieces could edge him ahead of Lamela?

No Hazard or Sturridge might hurt.

Mata could be rotated with Kagawa.

Baines got 5 goals, 5 assists last season, not excessive for a free kick taking, penalty taking attacking full back.

Firstly they got a lot of cleanies early doors but then faded so that puts me off.

Secondly Miralles continues to steal free kicks which diminishes his appeal.

Thirdly they have no striker that feeds off his crosses.

I know they couldn't help that, but my point is that selling a couple of key players or losing a manager would make the following season a bit tricky. To sell 4 of your starting 11 (and potentially 2 others) along with losing your manager... frankly I'd be terrified if I was a saints fan.

Happy with our signings so far. Just disappointed about Remy. People think if you have money you can just play football manager, reality doesn't work like that.

I am too mate, mind we'll have to wait and see, plus I doubt many (if any) have actually properly watched Can or Markovic, while most think Lallana is no better than Michael Kightly.

Lallana's had one good season in the PL. His first season was dodgy. It could go either way.

Look like Spurs will be looking for a new right back - Walker has gone a bit mad!

Clyne's still available - seems to be every other club's transfer strategy.

    Courtois (Gilks)
Wisdom Kompany Terry Shaw (N Taylor)
    Sanchez Eriksen Sigurdsson Hazard (Albrighton)
    Rooney Dzeko (Zamora)

Taylor in for Wisdom GW2 and GW3, then transfers or wild card takes over

I'd rather have another forward but I'm not keen on the value outside of Siggy
    Too much in defence?

He's the last forward I'd want, sorry! 🙂
If I could bet on one forward to fail this season it would be him
He's never ever succeeded in elite adult football

so we all starting this season like the last one . . . "Yaya is a DM, he will not score more than 5 goals all season"

no chance he will play in the hole after signing Fernando

There are quite a few players that are very highly owned in FPL but you don't see in many teams here (which have largely converged to group think) like

Zabaletta, Koscielny, Mertersacker, Lovren, Yaya, Gerrard, Sterling, Barkley, RVP, Sturridge

I've gone with Haz - I think a proven option and can always downgrade to Fab if Fab performs better. Easier to downgrade than to look for cash and upgrade.
