Gylfi Sigurdsson emerges from the bench to score twice in Swansea’s win over Plymouth. Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City hammer AC Milan, Diego Costa nets on his Chelsea debut, Raheem Sterling grabs Liverpool’s winner against Olympiakos, whilst a Gary Taylor-Fletcher strike earns Leicester victory over Everton:

Sigurdsson at the Double
The Icelandic international needed just seven minutes of his second debut for the Swans to serve notice of his Fantasy potential for the season ahead. Emerging from the bench on 65 minutes, Sigurdsson was immediately handed dead-ball duties for the Welsh side and his deflected corner was forced home by Jordi Amat before he struck twice – the second courtesy of a superb long-range free-kick – in a convincing 4-0 win.

After the match, Garry Monk (who will be without Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes for the start of the season due to knee injuries) lavished praise on the Icelandic international after a sparkling display. Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sigurdsson now looks set to pick up in ownership ahead of a schedule which hands Swansea four strong home fixtures and a trip to Sunderland in the opening seven Gameweeks:

“From the start of the summer, he was a player I really wanted to bring in straight away. He’s a top player – actually a better player than when he was first here. He’s come in and contributed straight away today. He adds quality to our squad, which is what we want. It helps that he already knows how this club works. He knows me well, as well as a few of the boys, so in terms of settling in, that will help him.”

Costa Opens Blues Account
Chelsea’s summer signing from Atletico Madrid netted on his debut as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to defeat Slovenian outfit NK Olimpija Ljubljana 2-1. Chelsea started in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Cesc Fabregas fielded in the double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, before a change in tactics saw them shift to 4-3-3, with the former Arsenal skipper afforded more license to break forward. As a result, Fabregas – who took most of his side’s corners when on the pitch – supplied the pass for Costa’s first goal for the club before Kurt Zouma notched the winner from close-range just after the hour mark. In defence, Mourinho started with Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis as his full-backs but the Blues boss fielded eight defenders over the course of the 90 minutes, meaning Fantasy managers are no closer to ascertaining his preferred backline ahead of the new campaign.

Jovetic Bags a Brace in City Rout
The Premier League champions look to have quickly found their form after demolishing AC Milan 5-1 last night. Manuel Pellegrini utilised his non-World Cup players for the showdown and forgotten man Stevan Jovetic caught the eye with a two-goal haul against the Italians to suggest he’s finally put his injury woes behind him and offer a valid option to City for the start of the season, with Alvaro Negredo set for months on the sidelines. Elsewhere, Jesus Navas maintained his impressive pre-season form with a goal and assist to stake a claim for inclusion, whilst fellow wide man Scott Sinclair was afforded the full 90 minutes and also managed to get amongst the goals.

After the match, Pellegrini talked up Jovetic’s prospects for the season ahead – prior to last night, the former Fiorentina forward was far off the Fantasy radar after mustering a mere just two league starts in his debut campaign:

“Well Stevan had a very bad luck last year, he had a lot of injuries the whole year, so it’s very difficult for a player to have an important performance when he cannot play three games in a row. In this year he starts the pre-season – well he finished last as well – playing well and I think that now he works continually every day he will demonstrate why he’s here in Manchester City because I think he’s a very good player.”

Sterling Fires Reds to Victory
Brendan Rodgers fielded a number of his key players as Liverpool narrowly beat Greek side Olympiakos 1-0. Regulars such as Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling all started the match – the latter two combined for the Merseysiders’ match-winner with just over five minutes on the clock, as Sterling vindicated the decision of the 16% FPL managers who already have him on board. New boys Emre Can and Lazar Markovic were also named in the XI – intriguingly, the former (at 5.5 in FPL) was fielded as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 and looks one to monitor if Rodgers views him as a regular starter.

After the game, though, the Reds boss was admitted he was particularly pleased with the display of his front three as he looks ahead to the first season of the post-Luis Suarez era:

“I’ve seen a difference in Daniel since he came back. He has obviously got confidence from the World Cup and his season last year. I think he’s ready to take on the mantle. He got 20-odd goals last season so he’s a striker of great value. Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that. We’ve got good speed. Raheem Sterling is always a threat – he’s a joy to watch. I thought those three were really exciting.”

Taylor-Fletcher Gives Foxes the Edge
A Gary Taylor-Fletcher goal was enough to give Leicester victory over Everton in a rehearsal for both clubs’ Gameweek 1 showdown. Nigel Pearson named a strong starting line-up, fielding new signing Leonardo Ulloa alongside David Nugent in a 4-4-2, with Marc Albrighton fielded on the flank, whilst Liam Moore (4.0 in FPL) was handed the full 90 minutes alongside skipper Wes Morgan at centre-half. The Foxes boss made numerous changes at the break and switched to a 4-2-3-1 as the Championship winners held on to clinch victory.

After the game, Pearson explained his decision to field both Moore and Morgan for the entire match, after he handed 18 others 45 minutes apiece:

“It’s a numbers game. We’ve come with a group of players and we’re doubled up in some areas but not others. Centre-backs won’t run as far as central midfield players or wide players, so there is some thought that goes into it, but they’re both very fit lads capable of playing 90 minutes. It’s valuable time to re-sharpen their own games.”

For Everton, Roberto Martinez afforded 20 players game time in their second friendly of the summer. With the club’s World Cup players still yet to feature, and Seamus Coleman omitted from the clash due to a hamstring concern, the Toffees boss fielded a mixture of first-teamers, fringe players and youngsters. The likes of Sylvain Distin, Aiden McGeady, Gareth Barry and Steven Pienaar were all handed game time as Martinez switched from 4-2-3-1 (with Steven Naismith as the lone striker) to an experimental 3-4-3 after the break but the Merseysiders were unable to find a way past Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

Let's try a RMT with a super heavy midfield:

    Ddg myhil
Debuchy, Davies (tot), collochini, Cameron, wisdom
    Sanchez, mata, hazard, fabregas, siggy
    Giroud, dzeko, fletcher

I'm one Rooney shirt of a great team IMO...

Big risk with just Dzeko and Giroud in my opinion (Dzeko may be rotated and Giroud has spells of being a donkey) ,then its hard to get a more expensive striker in without taking a points hit. Although its hard to say that with such an amazing midfield.

RvP: Rooney is a better option as of now
      Aguero: Made of glass
Costa: We all know about Chelsea strikers & that's a team happy with a 2-0 win rather than 4-2

Determined to get 6/8 "top 7" attackers in my lineup.

    Krul/Mannone
    Shaw/B. Davies/Simpson/Mariappa/N. Taylor
    Sigurdsson/Hazard/Mata/Eriksen/Sterling
    Rooney/Giroud/Crouch

SWA + STO attacking rotation. Sterling > Nasri for GW2.

    Key questions:
Are Sanchez and Costa going to be any good?
    Will Ramsey still be immense?
    Will Ozil do anything?
Is it worth dropping to 5/8 "top 7" attacking players to reinvest elsewhere?

Never have a 4.5 striker. Mariappa may not be nailed on. Debuchy's fixtures aren't great. I'd downgrade Tadic or Eriksen and sort out Mariappa and the third striker.

Rooney, Sturridge, Hazard and Sanchez in the same team looks very nice indeed though!

Why never a 4.5m striker? Worked well for me last season at times. Yeah mariappa a bit of a risk but lots of other options at 4.5, how about cameron or vlaar? Although don't fancy vlaar if he goes to tottenham...rotation risk probably.

Strikers are where the points are and if you decide to go with 3 starting strikers after a couple of week it may be very tricky to bring one in without making big changes. That said, the mid-to-expensive midfield options this season are much more appealing than strikers so fair enough. Cameron could be good if he starts but if you can find an extra 0.5-1m for that slot, the options are so much better I think.

(as well as this third striker situation) - shame as I was keen on taking a punt on Tadic! Wouldn't it be possible to make a shift from Tadic > bench fodder 4.5, 45 striker> someone like Bony if things were going pear shaped?

only problem is it'd probably take more than 2 transfers, which could be a pain to have to do early on. Because Tadic is only 3.0 more expensive than the cheapest midfielders, whereas Bony is 4.0 more expensive than the cheapest strikers. I suppose everyone's gonna have to go with a cheapy soomewhere though, so go with what you think gets you the best team and hope you don't have to play the cheapy too much haha. Just for me, I think cheapy midfielders tend to be more decent in terms of points if you get the right one

    @Irish (or anyone interested)

    Repost from 11days ago:

After reading words from our (Burnleys) captain Jason Shackell about (& everyone says it) making our ground (Turf Moor) a fortress I thought I'd look at the validity & probability of this happening:

Let's just rewind the clock to our first season (in Prem) at home under Owen Coyle & Brian Law (2009/10)....

Unfortunately I have no stats on our 2008/09 promotion season to back up/prove what I'm saying, so going off memory, but that season was under Owen Coyle & was pure gun hoe, bit like Rodgers last year with Liverpool "you score one, we'll score two". So onto that Premiership season

    Our home record stood as W7 D5 L7 GF25 GA30 2 clean sheets (CS)
Not exactly brilliant, but compared to away record (W1 D1 L17 GF17 GA52 0CS) it looks pretty descent.

So, moving onto Eddie Howe (after relegation back into the Championship) like Coyle, chose the goals galore route, our home record though still fairly average, yet solid (W7 D9 L7 GF33 GA27 4CS).

2012/13: Howe lasted just a few months, home record reading W3 D2 L1 GF14 GA10 2CS, the writing was on the wall with him leaving & eventually did.

October 30th, Sean Dyche appointed. First game was a 2-0 home win & the defensive manner of Dyche's philosophy kicked in. Initially seemed odd from my pointerestedw, use to having a team going from trying to score goals, to stopping them going in. His seven month initial first season in charge at home read W6 D6 L5 GF17 GA11 6CS.

Onto last season, admittedly I wern't hopeful, thinking of Dyche's 'negativeaty'. I was clearly proved wrong. Home record reading W15 D6 L2 GF37 GA11 11CS

So what was point of this, well, simply based on our home form/record, Dyche's defensive record & Shackell's words above, a Burnley defender or GK (Heaton) should/could be a must have

      I dont understand
What you seem to be saying is "we didn't lose many at home in our promotion season"

Erm... wouldnt you expect a team automatically promoted to have a strong home record previously.
Think we take that as a given

Also despite the "negativity" you still played with 2 strikers

I can only see Burnley managing to keep similar ability sides and maybe the odd slightly better sides out which would be about 6 games over the season maybe. Having a solid home record in the championship is one thing, having it in the premier league is something entirely different. In the championship a lot of games are tight and decided by the odd goal whereas the class element in the prem can literally see sides annihilated home or away. I like Shackell he was a quality defender and captain when we had him at Derby and we've missed him since but whereas QPR have bought in genuine quality and experience at the back in Ferdinand and Caulker, Burnley have not and I can see Heaton being another case of David Marshall which might not be a bad thing ironically

Seems like most will underestimate Burnley at Turf Moor at the start of the season so, might be a bit tighter than expected!

Although you might have gotten lucky and then get thrashed 0-7 on the first day vs Chelsea 😉

      Shackell is looking tempting though.

If a striker scores in a defeat he's unlikely to get bonus making his goal actually worth less than defender getting a clean sheet in a victory
With general involvement looking like it will more heavily influence the awarding of bonus - and those bonuses will be more likely to be limited to 3 players I question whether goal-hanger strikers - as talented at their job as they might be - particularly those that play for bottom half teams are as valuable as similarly priced defenders?

For the likes of Bony, Pelle or Remy you have to have great faith that no only will they plunder a goal every other game that their team will earn enough wins for them to benefit from those bonuses.

When selecting from Borini - 6.5, Jelavic - 6, Ings - 6, Austin - 6, Murray - 5.5, Berahino 5.5, Fletcher - 5.5, Bent - 5 you have to judge so well to pick the man that fires in 3 goals in the first 5 / 6 in the first 10 but ALSO that remains in a successful team.
In this manner a strong defence can be a massive aid to a striker

However, for me I find that players whom i can rely on to play 90 mins every week, may sneak a goal or assist and have a strong chance of picking up 4-5 cleanies in the first 10 games are better value.

IE. Coleman, Kompany, Terry, Cahill, Vertonghen, Shaw

Most underpriced player currently imo. Biggest bargain due to the move

    A) Aguero -- Rooney -- 7.5 striker

    B) Dzeko -- Rooney -- Costa

B 'template'? I prefer A but think Costa could be worth having the first three-four GW's.. Thoughts?

Bojans statistics at Ajax are not great. Never cemtented a starting role, 32 games, 5 goals.

      Just saying 🙂
