With less than a fortnight to go before the big kick-off, Fantasy managers and our community writers and posters are continuing their mission in search of quality budget options and prosperous heavy-hitters, whilst sifting the crop of new top-flight talent.

We look back to soak up the highlights of the week’s community submissions and drop in on the key Hot Topics to contemplate Southampton’s exodus, the potential starting XIs and the case to select a certain Manchester City full-back.

The Community Articles

The community section is simmering nicely as we near that August 16 deadline, with rotations and predicted teamsheets earning some keen interest over the past week.

ForzaInter was the latest community writer to tackle the issue of defensive rotation, putting forward a compelling new angle. His strategy is to focus on heavy-hitting, premium defenders from top sides and supplement them with a cheap defensive pair that can drop in when tricky fixtures rear their heads.

Defence was also the focus of Bowstring The Trout’s budget balancing article in which he lays out some furtehr cheap rotation options, in addition to a handful of mid-priced stoppers.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster returned with another of his excellent player analysis updates focusing on the new arrivals to the Premier League. This time around he presented a useful summary of the key acquisitions to this point, including links to his new player spreadsheets, which will be particularly helpful to those catching up on his series of must-read updates.

Saniul, is another community writer who has been compiling a series of illuminating spreadsheet analysi. He’s focused his attentions on the potential starting XIs, based on the latest injury, transfer and friendly fixture news and events.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or lengthy opinions and foresight to share, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

While I was away on my family holidays this week, Fantasy Football Scout’s moderators and contributors kindly stepped up to take over our daily Hot Topics, covering a range of issues from differentials, to the continuing quest for individuality as we seek to avoid the template team.

Mark posed a pair of differing posers during the week, firstly asking how many new players to the Premier League we will be considering and just how far we should go with our punts on the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Meanwhile, Mark also chirped up to ask whether Fantasy managers are being duped into a defensive template by the recent transfers involving the likes of Ben Davies, Dejan Lovren and Andre Wisdom.

Manchester City was a focus for moderators Spencer and Applebonkers’s Hot Topic contributions. Spencer pondered just how much the World Cup will affect the pitch time of those players involved in the latter stages of the tournament, with Sergio Aguero a particular concern.

Ironically, one of those players who could well benefit from late returning World Cup players is the much-maligned Aleks Kolorov. Applebonkers asked whether the defender, who is often referred to as ‘Lolorov’ due to his bandwagaon cameos and frustrating knack of letting us down, could be in for a sensational early start to the campaign. Applebonkers certainly volunteered some compelling statistics to back up investment in the Serbian. Personally, I think this is a blatant attempt to lure Mark into the Kolarov honey trap from the get-go.

Elsewhere, the community’s most experienced Fantasy managers such as Triggerlips and Rasping Drive, were quick to respond to moderator Athletico Timbo’s excellent Hot topic asking for the top tips for success. Efficient short-term planning and watching as many games as possible, were among Rasping Drive’s nuggets of advice. Meanwhile, in a separate Hot Topic, Triggerlips wondered, with so many unknowns in the game, whether Fantasy managers would be better off carrying out minimal planning and seeing how the early season unfolds.

Another experienced campaigner, Torres Magic, also helped out with our daily Hot Topics. His focus was on differential players and proved one of our most discussed posts of the week. Inspired by this thread, Squeaky Bum Time decided to look specifically at some of the best mid-priced differentials available in the Fantasy Premier League game.

While holidaying in Hampshire, the local news inspired my first Hot topic on my return, as I pondered the fate awaiting Southampton following the exodus of their crown jewels in July. Some of the responses demonstrated faith in their remaining players to step up and replace the likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. Among those who could be destined for a great season is young full-back Matt Targett. Be sure to check on Lucy’s thorough analysis of his prospects here.

While investing in Targett and other Southampton players could be a risk, there was a cast of more reliable sources discussed this week.

Arsenal’s rejuvenated midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, stands out in particular according to the aptly named Aaron Ramessi, who predicts another stellar season for the clinical Welsh playmaker. Elsewhere, Beavis nominated Romelu Lukaku as an asset who could offer us a decent level of assurance, while Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is said to be another dependable points scorer, particularly before January, if Dandec’s analysis rings true.

Finally, Innsie was on hand to provide this excellent summary of all the key questions during the week, including the demise of Southampton’s squad and the conundrum surrounding Chelsea’s tempting defensive assets.

The Community Tournaments

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing is returning for the 2014/14 Fantasy Premier League season. The code to join is 52587-7172.

Xward has also set up an open FPL league, called “Naughty Filthy Punters” (3079-201991), while Narenda Wicaksono has a league (67393-21769) and a cup (67393-21807) in FPL that is open to the community.

Elsewhere, Zep has set up a dead team challenge, where teams stick with the same squad selection until the end of the season. Full details can be found here.

    Ugh, having defensive issues atm.

Anybody looked at going with an expensive defender and then 4 rotating 4.5's? Leaning towards it atm.

    Current draft:

    Foster (Myhill)
    Evans, Ferdinand, Chester (Coloccini, Bruce)
    Hazard, Fabregas, Mata, Eriksen (Sigurdsson)
    Rooney, Costa, Bojan*

I'm leaning towards that front 6 for the first few weeks, with Sigurdsson and a cheap forward (*Bojan in temporarily) rotating for the 7th spot based on fixtures, but it sure does make it tricky getting a stable defence in. Also feels wrong with no Arsenal or Man City attackers, but there's a good deal of uncertainty and weaker fixtures for both.

I'm not convinced Ramsey will be such good value at 9m but I am finding it difficult not to have Sanchez in, if he's going to play a central role.

3 Chelsea does seem overkill if they underperform - perhaps Costa could be downgraded slightly to free funds for defence - but I have a feeling all three will start strong and rise in value.

After spending way to much time creating a excel file with all favorable fixtures for teams with cheap defenders have I finally found 5 fairly cheap defenders I am happy with and whom have really good fixtures up until gameweek 17 with one transfer in gameweek 13 (Cameron to West Ham defender).

QPR - Southampton - Man United - Stoke - West Brom
    Ferdinand - Clyne - Man U 5,5 - Cameron - Wisdom

Man United defender playing every gameweek exept 9,10 and 12 (man C (A), chelsea (H) and Arsenal (A))
The Goal is to try and play Wisdom as little as possible since his gametime is questionable atm, Wisdom is therefore only played 4 times during the 18 gameweeks.

    FIxtures, homegames with capital letters:

GW 1 : SWANSEA, HULL, ASTON VILLA
GW 2 : sunderland, WEST BROM, hull
GW 3 : burnley, SUNDERLAND, west ham
GW 4 : QPR, NEWCASTLE, leicester
GW 5 : leicester, STOKE, qpr
GW 6 : WEST HAM, QPR, NEWCASTLE
GW 7 : EVERTON, west ham, Sunderland
GW 8 : West brom, SUNDERLAND, SWANSEA
GW 9 : ASTON VILLA, STOKE, CRYSTAL PALACE
GW 10 : hull, WEST HAM, leicester
GW 11 : CRYSTAL PALACE, LEICESTER, NEWCASTLE
GW 12 : newcastle, Aston villa, BURNLEY
    Stoke > West ham
GW 13 : HULL, LEICESTER, NEWCASTLE
GW 14 : STOKE. west brom, WEST HAM
GW 15 : southampton, BURNLEY, SWANSEA
GW 16 : LIVERPOOL, Burnley, Sunderland (aston villa if you want to play Wisdom)
GW 17 : Aston Villa. WEST BROM, EVERTON, LEICESTER ( 4 good fixtures, feel free to choose)

Home games: 32 Away games: 19

What is your opinions on this? It is not the cheapest defense since it costs 23,5 mil but far from the most expensive. It does assures favorable fixtures for almost half the season with only one transfer.

Here is a picture of the excel file if someone would want it. : http://imgur.com/a/ES5I9
I would also be glad to know if you find any other working 5 team combo that allows for good rotation for 10-20 GW's! 🙂

They do, but Palace are Palace

You;re backing Stoke's defence based on what they did under Pulis.

It is up to you of course, just a suggestion.

I might look into him, but Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton in the first 10 gameweeks is a mayor factor I would need to consider.

It has more difficult fixtures in my opinion. Everton x 4, man u/c x 1. It is cheaper, but to cheap for me and to risky.

I am not convinced it's a massive improvement on the one I posted earlier. It basically swaps Hull and Swansea for United and West Brom. And loses Huth for Cameron.

It is good though - and united assured of cleanies.

I am personally hoping that Vermaalen will go to United, so that I can spend the extra 0,5 mil on Either Caulker or a 5 mil Stoke player. I would also rate Man U + West brom higher than Hull and Swansea, especially with West brom only playing 4 games.

problem is if one of them gets injured (or falls out of favor before the transfer window closes), it will be difficult to find and adequate replacement as most are priced @ 4.5 or below. Smells like this is setting yourself up for a few hits to replace some defenders in the not so distant future.

If someone would be injured for a small amount of time (say 1 match) Would I simply play one of the defenders that have a more tough fixture, but you are right that a long time injury could cause some problems and forcing me to spend a transfer in the defense.

I just finished my 10-manager EPL draft league (I know it's silly for us to draft this early, but it was the only time to get 10 grown men in a room together at the same time). Here's my team:

    Hart - Krul
    Luis - Kompany - Shawcross - Bertrand - Rangel
Sanchez - Herrera - de Jong - Tadic - Hoillett
    Rooney - Long - Nugent

I'm very worried about my midfield, since none of them were in the EPL last year. I'm very happy with my keepers, and if all my defenders start then I'm good to go there. My strikers are also pretty poor, but no one in our league was able to draft two star strikers.

I was going to monitor the Nugent-Long situation and go for other strikers. The best part about a draft league is everyone getting together in their full colours at a brewery. When it all ended, there were four of us in the car park wearing Chelsea - United - Spurs - Pool gear, all making fun of each other but making the most fun out of the guy who drafted 4 West Brom players in a 15-player league.

Zamora and Yun would concern me but if they're playing they're fine.

If you're going Krul as only gk, I'd be tempted to get Elliot in from NUFC for Gilks (really not convinced he'll play at Burnley) so that if Krul misses out you've got a playing gk.

You appear to be going for the wrong QPR players.

Zamora will be an impact sub, he can't play 90 mins anymore.

Redknapp doesn't appear to trust Yun either.

I fear you'd get very few minutes from those two.

Am also considering the idea of Bego every week and drafting in Evans so I'd go with
