Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere net again for Newcastle. Leonardo Ulloa bags a brace for Leicester. Lukas Jutkiewicz is at the double for Burnley, Charlie Austin is in the goals once more for QPR, while Alan Hutton fires Villa to victory at Walsall:

Toon New Boys in the Goals
Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere scored for the second successive outing as Newcastle drew 2-2 at Huddersfield Town last night. In defence, Daryl Janmaat was handed his debut at right-back for the Magpies, with Mike Williamson partnering Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of defence and Massadio Haidara on the left. Pardew continued with a 4-4-2 formation, fielding Cabella and Yoan Gouffran on the flanks and with Siem de Jong missing out due to a foot problem once again, summer signings Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra led the line. That’s two goals in as many appearances for Cabella, while Riviere leads the way with three to his name so far; potentially handing us a mid-price differential option (7.0, with 1% ownership) ahead of a decent set of opening fixtures for the Tyneside team. Given that de Jong has also netted twice, the signs look promising for Pardew, with his signings already looking vital additions.

After the game, Pardew confirmed that, despite a lack of pre-season, Janmaat will be a definite starter against City in Gameweek 1:

“He is a class act. He will play for us against Man City – there’s no doubt about that. He had 60 minutes, and hopefully he’ll get 80 on Sunday, and he’ll be ready to go.”

Austin Nets Again for R’s
Harry Redknapp made just four changes from the side that defeated Shamrock Rovers 4-0 on Saturday for last night’s 2-0 triumph over Athlone Town. Danny Simpson, Steven Caulker, Nedum Onuoha, Joey Barton, Junior Hoilett, Bobby Zamora and Charlie Austin were the men to keep their places and the latter continued the form that saw him bag a brace last weekend by netting his fourth goal of the summer. Zamora chipped in with a goal and assist but despite that lowly 4.5 FPL price tag, Redknapp will surely strengthen up front before the summer transfer window closes, making the 6.0-priced Austin the stronger option ahead of home games with Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks.

Baggies Youngsters Stake a Claim
Joleon Lescott, Sebastien Pocognoli, Gareth McAuley and James Morrison all remained sidelined through injury as Alan Irvine’s side lost 3-2 to Port Vale last night. The Baggies boss fielded a mixture of senior figures and academy graduates and lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Craig Gardner tucking in behind lone forward Victor Anichebe – both players picked up an assist apiece after teeing up youngsters Kemar Roofe and Bradley Garmston for the visitors’ goals. In all likelihood, though, neither of last night’s scorers look like retaining their starting berths once Irvine’s injury problems finally come to an end. Elsewhere, Andre Wisdom was again handed the full 90 minutes at right-back – whilst it raises hopes over his appeal as a 4.0 FPL option, it remains to be seen where he’ll sit in the pecking order once new boy Cristian Gamboa is ready for action.

Hutton Wins it for Villa
The Scotsman grabbed the only goal of the game as Paul Lambert’s side defeated Walsall 1-0. Farmed out on loan last term, Hutton is turning in some decent displays as a right wing-back in Villa’s 3-5-2 formation which suggests he may yet have a part to play in his manager’s plans this time around – at 4.0 in FPL, he could potentially hand us a cheap fifth defender option, though with just two favourable fixtures in the first eight, few are eyeing up the midlands side right now. Ron Vlaar watched from the stands as he builds up his match fitness, while Darren Bent joined Joe Cole on the sidelines with injury. In terms of selection, Lambert opted for Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker as the back-three, with Kieran Richardson fielded on the left of the midfield five and a front two of Gabby Agbonlahor and Andi Weimann.

Jutkiewicz at the Double
The Clarets summer signing continued his excellent pre-season by scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo. With Danny Ings missing out due to a minor calf complaint, Jutkiewicz was partnered by Ashley Barnes up front and took his tally to five for the summer; joint-top with Stevan Jovetic and Glenn Murray so far. First-choice keeper Tom Heaton made his first appearance of the summer after recovering from a calf problem, whilst Sean Dyche rolled out last season’s regular back-four – Kieran Trippier, Jason Shackell, Michael Duff and Ben Mee – ahead of the final friendly against Verona on Saturday.

After the match, the Burnley boss heaped praise on new boy Jutkiewicz, who has make a significant impact since arriving from Middlesbrough earlier in the summer. Dyche also explained Ings’ absence and dismissed suggestions the frontman could be set to depart the club:

“I thought Lukas’ first goal was an excellent finish after he showed good strength to shrug off his man. We know he is very powerful and then he had the calmness to slot it past the keeper. The second one comes from some fantastic play from Ashley Barnes and he puts a great ball across the box and Lukas is in the right place which is where you want your strikers to be…He’s (Ings) not going anywhere, he just had a knock and we had to be careful with it. We have to make sure at this stage of the season as it is vital the players come through it. Everyone knows there was a few knocks in the early part of the game programme and we had to leave people out to make sure they’re fit and well for when it really matters.”

Ulloa Bags a Braces in Foxes Canter
Leicester’s summer signing from Brighton found the net twice last night in a 3-1 win at Rotherham. Bearing in mind The Foxes played MK Dons the night before, Nigel Pearson changed his entire XI for yesterday’s encounter, with Ulloa joined by 2013/14 regulars such as Kaspar Schmeichel, Ritchie de Laet, Liam Moore, Danny Drinkwater and Anthony Knockaert – Drinkwater netted his second of the summer, though Knockaert will need monitored after being forced off with an ankle problem according to the club’s website. While Ulloa’s display will have caught the eye, David Nugent is the man in form for the Championship winners – despite being rested last night, the latter still leads the way this summer for Pearson’s side, with four goals to his name thus far.

Last season I did a bit of VB which worked out the best team based on the previous years points. Could easily be adapted. Problem with all this is it doesn't take account of your captain and just churns out defence heavy teams. No one captains a defender.

do you think I should go for a 3-5-2 with 5 quality midfielders and 2 quality forwards with an average sub up front or 4 -3-3 with 3 quality midfielders 1 decent and 1 average as sub and 3 quality attackers?????

  13. Will Owning 'Siggy' Prove Costly?
    Irish Madridista ⭐
    • 15 Years
    11 years, 4 months ago

The way I see it, Siggy is looking odds on for a price drop.

Think about it, he's a punt by most, he's easily replaceable at that price (Young, Henderson, Puncheon, Matic, Ince, Snoddy, New Bandwagon, etc), he's up against United away and then a defensive newly promoted side in Burnley so it's not too much to say that he MIGHT blank in the first two games, I'd expect him to blank at Old Trafford GW1 anyway.

So what's to stop people jumping on whoever scores in GW1 at that price? Any casuals that have picked him up might jump ship, and then Siggy's price goes down.

    ALTERNATIVE PLAN

GW1, Ashley Young, wingback for United at home vs Swansea, then Sunderland in GW2.
Good pre season form, 0.5 cheaper than Siggy, less likely to drop in price, and if Siggy DOES take a week or two to start firing again for Swans, then his price will be down a small bit whereas Young might be a 5.7 or 5.8 by then...

I know, all very hypothetical, but people laughing at the idea of Young while they have the popular Siggy in their teams might not be laughing come GW2.
Siggy is fantastic value this season, but maybe not at the very start.

Whenever I've had him in my team I always want to bench him against Utd so I'm monitoring for GW2

Also Young would leave you without a Utd defender assuming you have Mata and Rooney

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Siggy is a differential outside FFS

I agree, he's look susceptible to a slight price drop if he opens badly. I think he'll make up for it relatively quickly though and I'm not keen on planning transfers that early in the season. Too many if's and but's. He's a good pick with decent fixtures in the first 6 GWs or so.

You are pushing the idea that Burnley at home is a bad fixture and also failed to mention that he then faces WBA at home straight after.

I actually never said Burnley at home was a bad fixture, I called them a "defensive newly promoted side" which is exactly what they are, that's not me saying that its a tough fixture..

I just said its a possibility that he MIGHT blank in the first two games.

I didn't mention the WBA game as I also didn't mention that United play Burnley in GW3, I only mentioned GW1 and GW2.

Last time you replied to one of my posts you said "quite frankly, you deserve the chair", so I'd ask you to just ignore my posts if you're that aggravated by what I say and think.

I would say the opposite. He has relatively low ownership because of his opening fixture - people will buy regardless of how he performs at OT because of his subsequent fixtures. It's only at about GW4 that people will start to sell and only if he fails to meet expectations. If he manages to score at OT, he'll gain value in a Michu-like fashion.

Nah Burnley at home isn't a negative, that is definitely a positive fixture, but I'm just saying its not inconceivable to say Siggurdson might not score against United or Burnley in his first two matches for the club, and I think people are almost expecting him to explode from the start and act like an 8m mid, which he might not do.

I think a striker will be most people's gw1 transfer I can see people scrambling to get a Costa or maybe even a well eck if they start well in which case it would probably be a premium mid downgrade I.e Sanchez to Ramsey or something along those lines to fund it. I really don't get why people are going bananas for young when he's gonna be playing wingback- I mean he's gonna be spending a lot more time defending than when he previously played and was in the points

At 7.6% ownership it's clear that he's not such a popular option and that most of the people who own him are those who roam these parts.
And managers from here are probably getting him for the long run and not necessarily planning on shipping him out after two blanks, especially considering his favorable fixtures afterwards.

If third striker is £8.0 or higher (Jovetic, Dzeko, Lukaku) most teams will need a budget 4th midfielder, and then he is as good pick as any. Imho a better alternative to your Young proposal is to go for a cheaper 3rd striker like Bojan or Austin, and then swap Siggy to Eriksen or Lamela or similar

It's a very good point. Unfortunately I have Evans, Mata and Rooney so no room for Young.

I currently have Siggy on the bench for the trip to Old Trafford and hope he will do something vs BUR and WBA.

However, you have definitely made me consider an alternative.

Funnily enough he was who I was considering. I still might change.

My midfield is Sanchez, Mata, Hazard, Siggy, Arnie

So another option is to downgrade Arnie to Albrighton and upgrade Siggy to Lamela or Eriksen.

Can't stray away from Rooney or Mata so I have to leave a spot for a United defender. My other choice would be Shelvey, and I'd rather spend that little extra to get Siggy. He's a good player I'm gonna try it out. His value can rise back up when he starts bringing in points. We shall see!

Late to the party, I know...

To answer your question "Will it prove costly?" in a word I'd say, "Perhaps?"

Don't all *popular* players start off with their fair share of risk though?
(Note: Sigurdsson's not even the most owned midfielder on Swans atm)

So while I agree if Sigurdsson gets of to a sluggish start he could very well see his price drop but, couldn't we say the same & probably be even *more* concerned about unproven players with even tougher schedules & higher ownership #'s like Sanchez or Albrighton?

In the end, I feel far safer with Sigurdsson up against two sides vying for relegation in his first three weeks than I would most anyone else in his price bracket.

Any advice would be great please

    Midfield and attack options

    Toure / Ramsey / Fabregas / Eriksen / Sigurdsson

    Rooney / Lukaku / campbell

    OR

    Mata / Fabregas / Ramsey / Eriksen

    Lukaku / Dzeko / Rooney

    ???

Second option is a better one....... but two attackers from same club is not a popular idea...... Rooney or Mata...play one of them... i.e Rooney/Diego costa, Fabregas/mata, Sanchez,Eriksen

He used to take direct free-kicks for us too.
But being serious his versatility might be his own downfall. Also he's getting on a bit now. Couldn'y get a game for Fulham a few years ago or Reading last year

'Scuse my numptiness - I've just become a paid-up subscriber and I'm looking for how to do the rate my team - inputting my ID# and getting the result. It looks like it doesn't start until GW1 but I've read people discussing their RMT scores. So how do I do it please 🙂

Excellent goal threat, one of the best stats wise.

Search for his name, then filter by each stat.

I remember his time at Swansea just fine, and I don't think that that counts as "proof" that he can replicate that, although I do expect him to have a fantastic season.

...Just not right from the start.

I disagree. Don't see why he can't score against United or get a big haul in GW 2. Even if he doesn't explode from the start, so what if you can get him .1 cheaper. It's still using up a transfer

Agree with this. Any player could put in a performance that makes them go up or down in price, but Siggy's fixtures being as they are makes me think he's less of a price-risk than others. Whether that means he's worth buying for FPL points is still in the balance, but you shouldn't avoid because of pricing reasons.

And then I'll be worse off and you'll have enjoyed a goal more than me while I have to use a transfer, I just don't expect him to do it straight away so I'm choosing to wait and see and hope his price goes down on top of that before he eventually does hit form (best case scenario for me).

I just have a feeling I'd be disappointed with his returns if I start with him, but I could be very wrong obviously 😛
