Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

Bojon in for Nugent (Leicester have some tough opening fixtures, Stoke have good ones) both are same price.

Albrighton instead of Wanyama is an option for your first team.

Second looks solid - your defence must be cheap then with all that midfield?

imo at 5.5m if we are to expect great things from him then we are being unrealistic. comparing bojan with dzeko u save urself 3m which means an extra heavy hitter elsewhere.

for his fixtures and low price he is a good punt imo with a view to change to other 6m options who are on form

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What are the pros and cons of 3-5-2?

I've been seeing a lot of 3-5-2 line ups on the Rate My Team thread but I'm still not convinced its a viable option. With just three forward slots there are always emerging strikers to invest in. I'm firmly in the 3-4-3 camp and think its better to play three players in your squad whose job it is to score goals - and therefore get my team points.

But am I wrong - what are the benefits of 3-5-2 and crucially if you are going for that formation who is your third striker that you are keeping on the bench.

this time the 3-5-2 line up is catching up because of the availability of good mid range mids...but eventually everyone will shift to a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3...

If its 3-5-2 your going in my book you need five MIDs with Sanchez in there and two heavy hitting strikers e.g. Rooney/Costa/Aguero/Sturridge/RvP.

That's a key point I think . Back in the power five days I went 3-5-2...but when that eventially collapsed I faced major surgery to get back to 3-4-3.

To me it seems that goals is still the biggest way to get points and it makes sense to get three good strikers rather than two good ones and one terrible one.

            7 weeks...

Not exactly a solid case for the formation being superior.

I agree, some flexibility is essential, but in general the 3-4-3 formation suits fantasy games best until the game adds shit loads of incremental points for other outputs (like Maccies did)

If you want to win FPL every point is precious. If you need to play 352 to maximise points, even for a few weeks, then you should have no prejudice against it. Narrow-mindedness restricts your options.

I think 343 is generally better as well, but no need to laugh off a 352, especially when an FPL-winner used it to good effect 😕

I'm not laughing it off entirely - I said "I agree, some flexibility is essential"

I don't think that 7 weeks out of a 38 week season is enough for us to consider it superior.

The 3-5-2 formation will be used by most managers at some stage with varying degrees of success, as will 4-5-1. But ultimately, 3-4-3 has tended to win out as the best formation overall simply because forwards are most likely to score the big attacking points.

I think people are using 3-5-2 as a way to "justify" the inclusion of Sanchez, as he is essentially a forward. In my opinion, the smarter ones will be the ones who hit Sanchez in a 3-4-3 - four forwards in one team.

Indeed....builds on a point I made in the Sanchez article...he is a forward really so its like having a 3-5-2 but with clean sheet points for your 'forward'....but as you say Sanchez plus three other good strikers in a 3-4-3 is potentially huge. Difficult to achieve early on, but is something I'll look to get when my value increases over winter.

I've been interested in a 3-5-2, more because I can't find three strikers I really like than because I like the formation in its own right.

Three up front will definitely be the way forward in the long run but while we wait for the form strikers to emerge, I'm currently feeling more comfortable starting with five mids.

As you've pointed out though, the biggest problem with 3-5-2 is that you have to spend a minimum of 5.5 to get a viable first sub.

I've been playing 3-4-3 for ages and this year I think Bojan is the reason for me to try something new, given his talent, form, early fixtures and great price of 5.5m. Stoke is playing a brand new attacking football too, so that's another advantage of getting him early on.

Talking about pros, midfielders get you extra point than strikers for scoring, and a point for a CS. So imagine if a midfielder is playing with a good defensive team, and also on PK duty, like Hazard, or Gerrard of yesteryears, that kind of player would be hard to ignore.

The reason many people think 3-5-2 will be a success this season is because of the wealth of quality in midfield and the doubt around many of the strikers.

In midfield we have the likes of Sanchez, Hazard, Mata, Ramsey, Fabregas, Sterling, Tadic, Gerrard, Eriksen, Lamela and Siggy (Walcott and Ozil will be good options when they're fit and starting too).

Up front, Rooney seems a must. Apart from that, a lot of the strikers have doubts - Sturridge is expensive and has poor fixtures, RVP isn't starting the season, Aguero is injured, we don't know much about the Dzeko and Jovetic situation, Pelle, Bojan and Austin are unproven at PL level, there are doubts around the futures of Bony and Remy, Costa is new to the league and Chelsea strikers have a poor track record... I could go on. Ultimately the sheer number of quality midfielders is making us think of a 3-5-2 but I'll stick with a 3-4-3 as I think it's the best, most flexible formation.

Trust me IM, I'm tempted by a 3-5-2. But the lack of a starting 4.5 striker and the difficulty of switching to 3-4-3 if a striker hits form is a big negative and could prove costly, in terms of transfers and points.

There's just as much in the 4.5 striker bracket as there is in the 4.5 midfielder bracket, unless you want to trust Albrighton to win his place and play well.. But the 4.5 player is never going to play anyway and might only get you 1 or 2 points all season from sub apps when your team is down to the bare bones.

Is it that difficult getting in a striker and swapping from 352 to 343? Surely it just means selling a premium mid and using the cash up front, so 2 transfers, easily workable.

I think the idea of having the safety net of a playing 8th attacker is a lot more attractive than having someone in your front 8 who doesn't get any points. But yes, he'll only be needed a couple of times over the season probably.

The thing is, if we have a situation like last season when 3 expensive strikers (Suarez, Aguero, Rooney) all hit form and become close to essential, it's a lot easier to do a transfer or two to get them all in if playing 3-4-3, whereas with a 3-5-2 the price difference between Zamora and Costa (for example) is 6m. The only way to downgrade a mid to afford this switch is if you swap Sanchez/Yaya for a 4.5 mid. If my third striker was Dzeko, the 2m price difference is a lot easier to cough up without decimating another of my key attackers.

I think your first point is what's going to sway me, I don't agree with the second point because you could just as easily assume that Walcott, Alexis, Yaya, Hazard, Ramsey and Silva all hit form and then you need to spend the money in midfield instead of up front where Aguero is injured, Costa is flopping, Rooney is fighting with LVG and Sturridge has 2 broken legs 😉 haha

I'll play with the idea of a 343 again for safety, but I don't like it 😉

At the end of the day there's no 'right' way to play FPL, if you think 3-5-2 is the way to go then go for it, it wouldn't surprise me if it worked well for you in the short term at least. 🙂

this is exactly what it boils down to for me.

At least three forwards will emerge and getting them without ruining your team will be tough unless you have a solid 3-4-3 framework in place (or wildcard).

I even like the look of a 4-5-1 on paper.

Having the money spread between defenders and midfielders, where 6 or 7m equates to an absolute behemoth of a player, looks great until the game starts.

Then Rooney, Aguero, Sturridge, Lukaku, Costa, etc, etc, start finding form and three forwards becomes essential.

SAR taught me a monster lesson last year. You have to be ready for it (if you have some cheap shite placeholder, getting them in rues your team)

3-4-3 unless you have a WC ready and ain't afraid to use it IMO.

And Sanchez, he ain't a striker in FPL. Its the same for everyone. Going 3-5-2 with Alexis is not the same as a 3-4-3 because 3-4-3'ers with any sense will be playing a 3-3-4 in your eyes.

        4-5-1 doesn't work.

If you have non-playing second and third forwards, then you will be forced to field a ten man team whenever your first forward misses a match.

But if your second forward is reasonably nailed on, then you might as well play 3-5-2, rather than leaving his points on the bench.

3-4-3 and 3-5-2 are both good formations IMO, and there is little to choose between them.

Guess I am the only one playing 4-3-3.. And I was rank 30k last season, which isn't that bad.
With 4-3-3 I can get the premiums in front tho and I see some good opportunities for clean sheets.

It depends how many midfielders are playing in the hole and scoring lots of goals.
A couple of seasons ago it was a great formation to play because there was Michu, Fellaini, Bale, Walcott and Silva scoring a load of points.
This season there is the chance that Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Mata, Sterling and Eriksen/Lamela could be played in an advanced role, remember that they get an extra point for each goal scored and another for a cleansheet.
I am not keen on starting with a five man midfield however as I want the flexibility to buy any striker who does well at a moments notice - an early hat-trick can do wonders for price increases. I have Rooney and Dzeko staying in my team (for as long as Dzeko starts) and need the other spot available.

Here is a different take on the matter...

Because there are so many options in midfield, and so few options up front (apparently) you probably want to go 3-4-3. Chances are everyone is going to have roughly the same 6 forwards (City attacker, Rooney, Sturridge, Costa, Tottenham forward etc) so the liklihood of them scoring is reasonable.

Because there are so many options in the middle, picking the right ones becomes more difficult - your chances of getting lucky with a punt on 1 player out of, say, 15 options is obviously worse then taking a chance of a player out of a smaller pool.

So whilst there is more 'value' and options in the midfield, you really want to concentrate on your front 3, knowing there are options to fill in behind them.

I believe football is transitioning away from the striker being the focal point of team scoring. We've already seen the demise of the 4-4-2 across world football, and now we are seeing less pure FWDs full stop. World cup winners Germany played with Muller and Goetze as their central 'forward', both of whom are more midfielders.

In terms of fantasy this season, I think that's reflected in the number of high goalscoring players who will be MIDs. Sanchez, Toure, Hazard, Tasic, De Jong etc

4-4-2 may be gone, but 4-2-3-1 relies on a focal point up to, being the creator or scorer. Same for a false 9. 3-5-2 equivalents are also around now, offering up that forward partnership.

Mids: Cesc, Ramsey, Mata, Sterling, Lamela
      Fwds: Rooney, one of Dzeko/Jovetic/Bony, a 4.5

Starting 352 as there are far more enticing mids around than strikers at the moment, and the notion that your whole team need surgery to get to 343 isn't true really, I can easily swap out one of my 5 8m+ mids and then upgrade the 4.5 or upgrade Dzeko to Costa or whatever I want that way...

Its the 4.5 striker that stands out for me...the only option is Zamora who will be a last minute sub at best. If I was to go 3--5-2 I'd definitely want a starter in case I need to play 3-4-3 should one of my heavy hitters be rested/get injured. For me 3-5-2 is only viable with 5.5 min spent on a forward and then I start to think of the playing 4.5m options in mid like Albrighton and then I'm back in the 3-4-3 camp.

Like when Shane Ferguson was 4m and people got him, ultimately it didn't work out when injuries and rotation occured. Take gwk 4 - post international duty - the third striker will be needed.

In essence playing 3-5-2 is almost like playing 3-4.6-2.4, since the lack of low cost quality in the forwards means that there are little guaranteed starters.

In essence weakening the 3-5-2 (unless you never plan to use the 3rd forward, like a bench stuck 5th mid).

Jonty, besides Rooney which strikers would you have in a 3-4-3? I have decided to go with Hazard, Mata, Sanchez, Ericksen, Siggy in midfield and Rooney, Austin & Bojan/Nugent up front. So, I plan to rotate between 3-5-2 and 3-4-3. Your thoughts?

You say Shane Ferguson didn't work out, but I seem to remember that one FPL manager led the world for many weeks that season with a non-playing Shane Ferguson as permanent last sub on his bench.

There might have been an occasional GW when he couldn't field a full team, but the extra points he got from the other 14 members of his squad more than made up for it. It can be a viable strategy.

Whilst I like the look of that, the problems with the surgery is that it takes 2 weeks or points hits to recover. Something that isn't exactly reactionary in the early stages of team value.

While I fully expect to make changes I still try to start off the season without the need to have major surgery. 3-4-3 offers me the flexibilty to be confident going into the season knowing I can move swiftly to get bandwagons, but realise that's not for everyone.

After looking at it I think it's only a good option if you're playing a long term team/game with little change regardless of what happens. Stick Baines,Sanchez, Rooney etc in there and over the course of the season it'll probably turn out ok. But that's not how we roll in FPL. It's all about the ebbs and flows and reacting. That's why I play the game, that's the enjoyment part. 3 up top gives the most room for manoeuvre for that.

That's not to say it won't work for a bit during the season. I've looked at it for the 1st 3 games if I'm going down GW4 WC. But for a formation over a whole campaign it's not the best.

I think it's a psychological thing: you can cram more big names into a 3-5-2, because the elite midfielders are - by and large - more affordable than the elite strikers.

So to cram 3 big strikers in you'll need a benchable 4.5m midfielder, probably a Siggy, and depending on your approach to defence, maybe even someone in that 7-8m range. Which just looks more budget than a fat midfielder made up of 3 or 4 9m + people.

Doesn't necessarily mean the 3-5-2 is better, it just looks better.

1 of the reasons for more 3-5-2 this season is the lack of proven & affordable strikers from good teams. For eg:

      Jovetic/ Dzeko situation
Giroud not doing well in pre season
      Bony unsure
      Sturridge too expensive

Whereas there are plethora of really good mid/high priced options who are either proven in PL or have a really good track record.

Also, the cheap strikers (Bojan/Murray/Fletcher etc) have been doing good so 3-5-2 can become 3-4-3 if need be

Personally I'm starting with a 3-5-2 (though with Bojan being my 3rd striker I can rotate into a 3-4-3) purely because I think there's so much talent in midfield this year, with so many strikers having question marks over their heads.

I've no doubt that in a few weeks I'll downgrade a midfielder to upgrade Bojan and play a 3-4-3, but for the first couple of weeks I have great confidence in my midfield five and Rooney + Dzeko to deliver.

the question is : who do you consider a viable option as a 3rd striker that would still allow you to have 4 strong midfielders?

      Rooney seems essential.
Costa is quite popular as a second option

Would you rate Dzeko as a third or secon striker?

And would you consider the likes of Bojan, Diouf, Jelavic, Giroud, Bony second or third striker material?

Generally speaking your top top strikers will get you 20 goals a season. Probably limited to Costa, Rooney, RvP, Sturridge, Aguero
The next rung will get you 15. Assuming they get game time these are probably Lukaku, Bony, Giroud, Dzeko, Jovetic, Negredo, Pelle and possibly one or two others
After that are a bunch who should get you 10 goals.

Your top top midfielders will get you 10+ goals a season (assuming game time again) - Yaya, Hazard, Mata, Silva, Sterling, Sanchez, Walcott, Ramsey, Siggy, Eriksen, Lamela, Tadic, Nasri, Fab and possibly a few others. A handful of these may even go up to 15 and will probably get more assists than the forwards.

I've taken a punt on a cheapish 3rd striker who should get 10 and might get more and the cheapness has allowed me to go for 5 of the top midfielders who I think are most likely to get more than 10.

I've got a front 8 that should all score 10+ goals and I'll leave the one out who has the toughest fixture.
I've tried my team with 3 top forwards and struggled to find what I thought was a good balance throughout my squad. I've found that now by picking Bojan, but if he doesn't fire there are quite a few other strikers at 5.5/6 that could replace him if they're on form.

It's a gamble and a bit of a balancing act because I haven't got any of the really expensive players (no RvP, Costa, Yaya, Sanchez, Hazard, Sturridge - I've got Rooney though) but I'm backing my mid-price alternatives to score well until such time as I feel I need to switch to a 3-4-3 (which I'm sure won't be too far down the line). If I can't do that in 2 or 3 transfers I'll use the WC.

The case against 3-4-3 is that there's a lot of uncertainty there: there's no sure heavy-scorers like Suarez anymore. Aguero's, RVP's, Giroud's form is doubtful. Will Dzeko start ahead of Jovetic or vice versa?

Lukaku hasn't great starting fixtures, it's hard to read Pochettino's plans for Adebayor, and so forth.

Of course, there's Rooney, Sturridge, Costa. But that sounds too expensive. Anyone above that's cheaper is somewhat a doubt.

Whereas with mids like Mata, Fabregas, Hazard, Ramsey you're more certain.

If u play 3-4-3 u probably will end up with 6 + 4.5 mid (Siggy+Alby), and 8.5 + 8.5 attack (Dzeko+Ade)... So basically u have one player that dont bring any points... If u are willing to sacrifice Haz/Sanchez and get Fab/Ramsey u can go smthng like this:

      Krulliot
      Verm(if tf to MU)-BDavies-Clyne (4.5/4)
      Ramsey-Mata-Fabregas-Sterling-Siggy
      Rooney-Costa-Bojan

Now u can rotate Siggy/Bojan, or upgrade def by downgrading Sterling to Eriksen/Lamela, and Siggy for 5mid (1.5m for investing in def)...

    Hi lads,
Due to real life taking up alot of my free time, I'm only really getting my team together. Some great articles on here so far but there is a certain area I am lacking in info and I was hoping to get your advice.

With the new bonus point calculations in effect, has there a been a shift in terms of where we would expect BPs to go - i.e last year, CBs with clean sheets would be almost cailed on to be in the mix, especially if it was a low scoring game.

    Thanks all!

2 questions to complete my team:

    1. a) Big Rom and Sterling
    or
    b) Studge and Punchy

    2. I have 9.5 for a 5th mid and 3rd striker, I know it isn't ideal but I am very happy with the rest of my team. So...
    a) 4.5 mid and 5.0 forward
    or
    b) 5.0 and Zamora
Please fill in the prices above with players!

I know I've gone really light on defence, but I'm planning on downgrading one of my premium mids (probably hazard) after a few weeks to pick up some of the cheaper bandwagons, so I'll have some funds to improve it pretty quickly. Thoughts?
