Pre-Season

Sleeper – Juan Mata

Our series of “Sleeper” articles, focussing on players who failed to live up to our expectations in the previous season, got underway with a look at Theo Walcott’s prospects earlier this summer. Next up, we turn our attentions to Juan Mata, who, in his first two seasons with Chelsea in the top-flight, cemented his place as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. Serving up 162 points in his debut campaign in 2011/12, the Spaniard stepped up another level the following year and, after a slow start, eclipsed Eden Hazard as the top scoring Blues midfielder by 212 points to 190:

The arrival of Jose Mourinho last summer changed all that, though. With the Blues boss opting for Oscar behind a lone striker, Mata struggled to make any impact from out on the right – starting 11 of Chelsea’s opening 22 league matches and emerging from the bench on a couple of occasions, he mustered a mere two assists, with his new manager somewhat critical of the playmaker’s work-rate.

From creative lynchpin to peripheral figure, Mata was offloaded by Mourinho in last winter’s transfer window as former United boss David Moyes turned to the Spaniard with arguably his last throw of the dice.

Whilst the new boy’s displays weren’t enough to save the Scot from the axe, they were, nonetheless, quick to capture our Fantasy attention. With his confidence restored from a consistency of starts, the record signing served up six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points in just 15 appearances to sign off the 2013/14 as one of the most in-form midfielders around.

The Prospects

Further analysis of Mata’s United stats bode well for the season ahead. From the point of his arrival in Gameweek 23, only two midfielders – Yaya Toure and Steven Gerrard – scored more often. Toure notched nine times, with four spot-kicks boosting his tally, whilst six of Gerrard’s eight strikes over the period were also as a result of converted penalties. In terms of goals from open play, then, Mata was joint-top with Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders during that period.

The arrival of Louis van Gaal has enhanced the Spaniard’s Fantasy prospects over the summer. With United now lining up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, Mata has been handed his preferred role in “the hole” behind a front two and has scored twice during his side’s unbeaten US tour.

Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford looks to have finally afforded Fantasy managers a viable option in the United midfield. For two or three seasons now, the men in the middle have failed to make their mark and we’ve been forced to turn our attentions to Wayne Rooney or Robin Van Persie as the likeliest source of attacking returns but the little Spaniard’s Premier League record underlines that, if assured of a starting role, he will deliver – his 2012/13 tally of 212 points is still superior to Hazard’s high of 202, recorded last season. In spite of that, Mata comes in at 9.0 to the Belgian’s 10.0, suggesting he could be undervalued by FPL this time around.

The opening schedule is beneficial, too. United have been afforded the chance to quickly hit the ground running – showdowns with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks could barely be more favourable and with Robin van Persie yet to feature in pre-season, Mata looks a strong double-up option alongside Wayne Rooney for those willing to splash the cash on the Red Devils from the outset.

Mariappa wagon is firmly back on the road after a brief puncture.

Turns out he didn't feature in the last friendly as he has a slight rib problem but "should be fit for the Arsenal game" according to Pulis

And CPL are a much better prospect for cleanies than QPR

More like there never was a puncture, but everyone expected one, sot hey all got off the bus and walked down Van Aanholt Street for a while before realising they were silly for not just taking the Mariappa bus.

Palace are in the market for a new LB so to start the season it is likely to be Ward at LB and Mariappa at RB, and when a new LB comes in Ward will switch to his preferred RB and Mariappa benched.

Depends if you're planning to play him. 6m is too much for a backup but if you are planning to play him then Siggy has more potential than Ince, I'd say (though I'm not totally sold on him).

I'm a Swansea fan and I'm not convinced we're going to rollover against United as much as the captain poll suggests, I'd expect a tight game with United winning 2-0/2-1.

For me Sturridge (c) home to Southampton who've lost their best players against a free scoring Liverpool side is where the fun is to be had

just curious, do you rate Monk as a manager? I always find it strange how people with little to no experience can get parachuted into top jobs just because they happen to have played football for the team before.

It's hard to say at this point. He could be a massive failure and take us down or he could be a revelation. In his favour, he would have taken the good and bad points from playing in the team for ten years from the various managers. There's also the continuation of the style of play and therefore no bedding in.

I thought he did well last year when under Laudrup we were not looking good at all. Put it this way, I don't find us boring to watch any more. Under Laudrup we were zzzzz.

I agree with all you said but an actually a fan of his so far, he's been the captain of the club for ages so already had the respect of the players and new their games inside out and we were playing a lot better under him than Laudrup but I must admit I'm not massively optimistic about the season unless we sign a decent new CB

Same was done with Roberto Martinez, albeit in league one. The chairman has an excellent track record in hiring our managers over the past ten years so I hope that he has seen something in Monk to hire him. It's that or he's looking to save some coin!

        Not a chance.
United should take it, but it won't be a trouncing.
Confident Swansea will put up a fight - we've also strengthened up front and in midfield.
'better manager' is definitely up for debate.
Under Monk Swansea were competing quite well with top teams... 2-2 Arsenal, 0-1 Chelsea and 3-4 Liverpool are good examples.

    Costa > Dzeko
    Siggy > Mata

Worth making the changes? I was set on Baines, but have 8 weeks to get him in

The RMT article is almost as fast as this one so this page would be completely unusable. Us Mods can hardly keep up though so if the community can get in behind it and kindly direct RMT's to the RMT thread that would really help.

I've firmly been converted into the Sturridge over Costa group. Sturridge's goals/assists tally looks even more impressive when you look at how many minutes he did it in last season. Also when the time comes it will take a maximum of 0.5 to make that magic transfer 😉

his stats are impressive. The reason I went Costa over Sturridge is that I expect Chelsea to be a stronger team this season due to the new signings whereas I expect Liverpool to be a much weaker team this season (without Suarez)

        No..... in fact, Hell No!!!!

Aguero has been one of the most consistent scorers over the past 3 seasons. Of course, the big problem has been injuries and I will admit that he is unlikely to hit the heights of Suarez and RvP in their standout seasons.

But as long as he plays, he is consistent. I do think slightly overpriced though by maybe a million

I should mention that there could be an accusation of bias here as he gave me the greatest sporting moment of my life, but being a City fan has also meant I've watched him play more than most people and this is what I base my judgement on

Anybody cautious about United's chances this season and Rooney/RVP/Mata and their defence chances of FPL points?

I will start with Rooney and Mata and zero Liverpool but that voice in the back of my head still prefers the Liverpool guys.

I went without United coverage completely last season from week 5 onwards and finished 13k. Yes Rooney scored okay and Mata did towards the end but Liverpool and City were scoring for fun, 4-5 goals every week where as United were losing to Stoke/Sunderland/West Brom etc.

I understand Moyes is gone and Van Gall has a better reputation. But I said a long time ago that without heavy investment the United squad is not good enough, doesn't matter who the manager is, only bought two players that I can think of and that defence for me is very poor for a top 4/5 side.

Still they have fixtures on their side and it won't be impossible to switch to Sturridge/Sterling after a few weeks if it looks to be the same as last season.

Just wondering if anyone has any doubts about United? Everyone seems to think they will tear it up this season?

United have a better team and go from CL to no Europe commitments.

Liverpool have, arguably, a worse team now that they are Suarez-less and go from no Europe commitments to CL.

I'm going JEvans + Mata + Rooney, no LFC, and I'm feeling very comfortably about it.

Completely different beast under LVG. Moyes was so completely out of his depth it's unbelievable.

Even if Utd don't sign anyone (which I'm sure they will), they still have the core of players who won the league by 11 points.

As a Utd fan, I'm not worried in the slightest about our chances. Chelsea will win the league though

Any reason there's not much love for Mutch on here? Cheap, pretty decent early fixtures, in the hole, nailed on, gives another 0.5m over Siggy/Hendo/Snoddy to change a Luis/Azpi to a Terry/Cahill.

What are people's thoughts on Coutinho? Rodgers has talked him up all summer and he's had a great preseason. But I gambled on him last year and he did nothing for 3 months!

He will have a great season, but not necessarily a great FPL season

How have Liverpool been lining up in preseason? Is Sturridge ever pushed wide instead of starting at CF?

No. Hendo played wide last game. Danny has been in the middle in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1

He has always been in the middle. We don't have another good enough striker to play central and push him wide.

Just checking. You did buy Lambert, but hopefully not to actually play him.

He drifts out wide sometimes, but that doesnt limit his threat, definitely looking dangerous
