This evening’s Members article takes a look over the action in Sunday’s Community Shield showdown between Arsenal and City. Having assessed Alexis Sanchez’ display our lunchtime Technical Area post, we delve into the data to discover for any hints of form ahead of the weekend Gameweek 1 deadline.
Right. Ummm.
A) Studge + Cesc
or
B) Costa + Sterling
?Open ControlsRMT
De Gea (Gilks)
Terry, Chambers, Bardsley, (Clyne, Bartley)
Hazard, Ramsey, Silva, Young, (Sig)
Rooney, Costa, Naismith
Rotating Sig & Naismith (until Jutk's fixtures offer greater point potential) with the option switching to a 5 man midfield, Clyne offers very good fixtures after the first game week and a lot of assist potential. Bartley will come in for chambers after Mert returns, or if Swansea sign a new CB then Naylor will be transferred for Chambers, and Bartley will eventually give way to Moore if the rumours of his playing potential are apparent in the opening fixtures.
My main concerns is whether to have DDG or 2x 4.5's. I have chosen Young over Mata because as much as I try to, I cannot picture my team without one attacking player from City's outfit. With Valencia injured and Young's pre season form, he offers security of starts and could easily nudge Valencia off that right wing back spot with good form.

Walsh about?
What you think of Martin Kelly? Straight into the line up?Open Controls😆
Was asked that last page a few times. I think he should fit in, but how we don't know. See the sticky on the last article.Open ControlsNot for the first gameweek I don't need to be Walsh to tell you that.
Open ControlsHonestly if he signs for them can see him being a regular before he was injured he was a regular for Liverpool for a while and he plays surprising a lot like Ivan does for Chelsea. Looks very awkward at full back but works well there and likes to push forward a lot.
Open Controls
From earlier:
Martin Kelly potential impact on Palace defense - and in short it really throws a spanner in:
Hopefully we will get some more insight from TP as to where he sees him fitting in best, but as of right now, it would make the most sense to me to play Kelly in his natural RB position and play Ward again, out of position, at LB. Ward out of position at LB is better than Mariappa I think, but it would problematically not allow Ward to further develop at his natural position. But for right now, today, I think this would be best for the team. That is, unless TP buys a proper LB.
Another option may be to play Ward at CDM next to Jedi, and keep Mariappa at LB. My Liverpool friend really rates Kelly and is telling me he has been having a great preseason and looks fully fit for the first time in ages. Another possibility is Kelly rotating in as a CB next to Dann, but the presence of Delaney and Hangeland complicates that.
Really tough to say what will happen and if we don't get further insight from Pulis before the weekend, I reckon the safest bet is to go with Ward until the dust settles.Open ControlsHello good Sir. Either way, you believe Kelly is nailed, right? Will he be ready for a start in the West Ham game?
Open ControlsI mean fitness isn't a question for Kelly as he's been perfectly fit throughout his preseason for BR. The real question is whether or not TP will trust him straight away and thrust him into the lineup. It could go either way, really. I would definitely not risk starting with him though.
Open ControlsI really want to start with a CPL defender for 4.5m in my team though. Do you think Kelly is my best chance. I have no problem taking a risk.
Open ControlsGet Vlaar and trade him out when Kelly is nailed could be a thought?
(sto, NEW, HUL)Open ControlsWell I won't need him for the first two GWs with my current defence. And Kelly is bound to be ready GW3. So I think I will start with him. Transfers are so precious...
Open Controls
Who's nailed on in Man United's backline? Smalling, Jones, Evans (when fit??)
Open Controlsutd this year wont struggle to score goals, but with the formation gaal play they wont keep enough clean sheets to be worth including
Open Controls
Eriksen has not had much involvement in Spurs' goals in pre-season. Is Lamela a better pick? The £30m man has bags of potential in the hole.
Or do you think another is better value at that price, Coutinho or Tadic perhaps?Open ControlsWould definitely want one of Lamela or Eriksen for Tottenhams fixtures which one I wish I knew.
Open ControlsEriksen will rise to the top quite quickly i think. Lamela has had a great preseason but the Dane has set pieces, corners etc. in his locker also. It's probably 51-49 though ... Lamela would be a great differrential.
Open ControlsMy policy is not care about preseason results other than to see who's fit/who will play. If Eriksen retains set pieces, I don't see why he shouldn't be close to as good as he was last year. Which was brilliant from an FPL standpoint.
Open ControlsAfter watching a few of Spurs' pre season games, I've gone with Lamela personally. He is more involved in attacks.
Cout and Tadic would both need some good performances in the PL before consideration for meOpen ControlsI think I will go for him.
I watched one or two games and he seemed the furthest forward player, making lots of runs, with good pace and quality.
I do like a punt.Open Controls
Threw Lamela in the other day. Looks like he's set for a much better season. Slightly differential pick that looks good to me.
Open Controls
Who would you upgrade to Eriksen?
Hendo or Siggy?Open Controlspick three or leave a suggestion - targett, marriapa, cameron, kelly(palace), wisdom
Open ControlsNone of those are good picks at the moment.
Open Controlshow come?
Open ControlsNone nailed on necessarily. All big question marks about their place in the teams. Kelly should be nailed but maybe not right away? Hasn't even actually signed yet has he? Cameron might be sold, Targett will probably get replaced by a new signing, Wisdom is a question with Gamboa but maybe he'll play CB? Just too many question marks, could end up having to take hits early on to fix them!
Open Controls
Rawr, what a game!
cant wait for the points to start adding up!Open ControlsA) Sanchez Eriksen Young
B) Ramsey Silva HendersonOpen Controlsspurs striker who will start ade or sal and any worth including?
Open ControlsSo many got fooled by Lamela last year why are you getting fooled by him again. He had chances in the Prem and was awful in every single game he actually played.
Open ControlsHe played less than 4 full games, minute wise. I prefer Eriksen, but it seems foolish to discount Lamela just because he didn't perform in such a small sample size.
Open ControlsI tend to agree, very much a wait and see for me.
Open ControlsLamela with Pochy is different also with the new BPS he'll take on more opponents and he always goes for on target shots
Open ControlsIf he doesn't score or assist there will be no baps, regardless of dribbles and shots. I'm tempted, but waiting.
Open Controls
Unless you're looking for ultra flair it's gotta be Eriksen in that spot early doors. Switch to Lamela when he shows some form when the opposing team is actually trying and it's not just preseason fluff. That said, I do really rate Lamela and I think he will have a very good year.
Open Controlslol he played 303 minutes and had injuries, stupid to judge him by that. He's got a (better) manager who seems to have sorted his head out, he's looking confident, and playing well, and has had a full pre season with the team.
Open Controls*331
Open ControlsNot as stupid as judging based on how he looked in preseason.
Open ControlsYes because no one who does good in pre season ever does good in the season ahead. Let's all get the same 15 players who did good last season and be boring together.
Open ControlsMauro Boselli, who, unlike Lamela, actually scored a load of goals in preseason.
Open Controls
Did Eriksen perform under AVB? None of the creative midfielders were up to much with him in charge.
Open ControlsNo second half of the season was when he shined
Open Controls
Bojan just because.
Open Controlsfletcher
Open ControlsFletcher because he's playing up top and isn't 5ft 5 inches tall
Open ControlsI have Bojan, but I rate Fletcher if he stays fit. They still might sign Borini though I dunno what that would do to his time
Open ControlsFletcher is an out and out CF and is keeping Wickham out of that position. Borini is a small, crafty striker who can play anywhere up top. (ie wing or in behind). Borini does not affect Fletcher's game time imo
Open Controls
A. Hazard and Dzeko or
B. Costa and Eriksen?
B leaves me with no City players but I'm not sure that's such a bad thing with their fixtures.Open ControlsWould go B personally as only Yaya and Kompany seem nailed on for City this year.
Open Controls
Hazard vs D.Costa ?!
1) Hazard:
(Pros)
- He has proven his explosiveness in the Premier League already.
- He keeps getting praises from Mourinho and teammates.
- 0.5 cheaper which allows bettering your team overall.
- He is a winger and new BAPS seem to favor them most.
- Less owned, so somewhat differential over D.Costa.
- On penalties and some set pieces.
- 90 minutes nailed-on.
(Cons)
- Unpredictable, he can score a hattrick, or totally flop.
- Recently, he has been going to the wing more and less in penalty area (observation)
D.Costa:
(Pros)
- He scored in the friendlies and proven striker.
- Best striker Chelsea has.
- Drogba's injury increases his "nailed-on-ness" at least for GW1.
- more owned, so if you have him and he scores, he will not hurt you.
- Facing newly promoted teams defenses in the opening fixtures.
- More consistent on team level (observation)
(Cons)
- More expensive.
- He is probably going to be substituted by minute 80 max (knowing Mourinho's style)
Who do you have? or prefer having should you have to choose only one ?Open ControlsI switched from Hazard/Dzeko to Costa/Lamela today.
Feeling good about it. Hazard has a knack of disappearing in some games, but Costa should be involved in most of the Chelsea goals. Hazard could explode at any time though...Open ControlsYep did the same except I have Jovetic. Costa is there to score goals and so far looks to be up to the task. Lamela a bit of a punt, as I don't want to end up with the template here. Too many of the same team floating around
Open Controls
Still debating between the two. One of the cons for Costa is that he isn't proven in the Premier League yet. Can he do it on a wet Monday night at Turf Moor?
Open ControlsGolas score far outweighs anf bonus points for successful dribbles
Costa
or have bothOpen ControlsFor me it was simple, as much as I'd love to have Hazard in my team. I prefer having Eriksen and Costa rather then Hazard and Bony or Giroud
Open Controls
Any advice?
Krul | Elliot
Luis Ben Davies Debuchy Ward | Duff
Ram Fab Silva Mata | El Ahmadi
Rooney Costa | ZamoraOpen ControlsFirst RMT of the new season!
-------------Howard
Debuchy-- Lovren--- Cahill
Ramsey-- Fabregas-- Silva -- Taarabt
Bojan-- Remy-- Diego CostaOpen ControlsYour better off selling Taraabt, pressing auto complete, and confirming.
Open Controls
Is Shawcross the only Stoke defender nailed on?
My thoughts on their likely lineup: Bardsley Huth Shawcross PietersOpen ControlsPieters should be fine as well.
Open Controls
Just on lamela, I'm pretty sure when he first arrived he didn't even understand the language.
Open ControlsFootball is a universal language
Open Controls
RMT please!
DDG (Gilks)
Debuchy, Cameron, Ferdinand, (Duff) (Moore)
Ramsey, Siggy, Henderson, Fabregas (Young)
Rooney, Costa, SturridgeOpen ControlsYoung>4.5
Debuchy>Terry/Cahill
You will never ever play 5 mids with those 3 up frontOpen Controls
Can I trouble you for some movie suggestions?
Watched Divergent last night, found it pretty enjoyable on the whole.Open ControlsMost nailed on Swansea defender for £4.5m or less?
Open ControlsKaboul nailed on?
Open ControlsHas there been frisking the fixtures??
Open ControlsUnpopular opinion time: Mata is much better in FPL than in real life. Same goes for Walcott and Kolarov.
Open ControlsKolarov for sure, he can't defend for his life
The other 2 are pretty good in general thoughOpen Controls...
Open ControlsMata is a tooop quality playmaker, Chelsea player of the season for 2 years in a row before moving to Old Trafford. I wouldn't say he's better in FPL but rather the vice versa. Walcott is also a very capable winger but he's so injury prone. Kolarov is indeed not a great full-back defensively due to his lack of speed, poor marking and tackling but his long shot, spot kicks and crosses are class.
Open Controls
RMT ! Think im finally at peace with my team. After changing it around 10 times.
Foster/Myhill
Cahill, Debuchy, Ferdinand, VanAnholt, Wisdom
Lamela, Mata, Ramsey, Mutch, Marney
Dzeko, Sturridge, Diego Costa..
Was gonna have Evans but im scared of his injury. Pick between him and Debuchy. Im a Gooner so i´ll probably stick with Debuchy.Open ControlsSo what's the deal with Julio Cesar? If he is back at QPR could he challenge green for the #1 spot? He's not even listed...
Open ControlsIs there a better option than Austin for 6m or less? Please don't say Bojan.
