There’s a slightly new approach to our weekly look at the Sky Sports game this season. Like last time out, we will be assessing the previous week’s data – including the Man of the Match (MoTM) recipients, the significant bonus point allocations and the up-to-date market trends, but on top of this I will be taking you through the Fantasy Football Scout’s team (managed by myself) as I discuss my plans for the week ahead with regards to captains and transfers.

Highest Ownership

Just for this week we will take a gander at the highest owned players in the game to get an idea of where the masses are hedging their bets.

Goalkeepers

NameTeamValue% Ownership

De GeaMan United5.810%

Midfielders

Forwards

NameTeamValue% Ownership
RooneyMan United9.429%
CostaChelsea9.525%
SturridgeLiverpool9.822%
SanchezArsenal9.519%
LukakuEverton8.812%

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League game, then, firm favorites Tim Howard, Dejan Lovren and Wayne Rooney come top of their respective positions, whilst in midfield, Aaron Ramsey, Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley are three of the five most popular options. Of that bunch, Rooney looks most likely to cause serious damage from the off with favorable fixtures and good form on his side.

My Team

Fabianski
Moore, Hutton, Van Aanholt
Mata, Hazard, Toure, Ramsey, Mutch
Rooney, Sturridge

0.4 in the bank

Breakdown

Lukasz Fabianski (3.8) – Picked simply because he’s the cheapest starting goalkeeper, I don’t envisage too many clean sheets but save bonus could be a factor.

Liam Moore (3.5) – Terrible fixtures and to be honest probably a poor option but a massive enabler due to his price, will likely be replaced as detailed below.

Alan Hutton (3.8) – Again it’s the price that has drawn me in here, hopefully Hutton can step up with some tackle bonus and avoid the red cards!

Patrick Van Aanholt (4.4) – Sunderland are fairly solid at home and the Dutch full-back seems intent on attacking, which Gus Poyet tends to encourage. He’s cheap and could chip in with the odd assist.

Juan Mata (8.4) – Chance for goals, assist, passing bonus and great fixtures; seems a no brainer from the off.

Eden Hazard (8.9) – Second highest scoring midfielder last season and now with a proper forward to put away his crosses, also the prospect of all penalties rather than Frank Lampard chipping in.

Yaya Toure (9.0) – 274 points last season only bettered by Luis Suarez, the all-action midfielder is a must in the Sky game.

Aaron Ramsey (8.6) – The fourth highest scoring midfielder last season despite missing four months of the season; similar to Toure, points come from all areas and he seems a must.

Jordon Mutch (5.0) – despite playing for relegated Cardiff last season, the midfielder still scored seven times. Handed the role in “the hole” in a 3-4-1-2 on his debut for QPR, he’s my favorite budget option.

Wayne Rooney (9.4) – The highest scoring forward remaining from last season, as mentioned above he has form and fixtures on his side and potentially a more advanced role.

Daniel Sturridge (9.8) – A goal scorer, Liverpool’s attacking style suits him and he’s now the main man. He scored 209 points last season I expect him to better it this campaign if he can keep himself fit.

Theory
I’ll be honest, I have taken a bit of a risk here by massively skimping on my defence but I believe there is some method in the madness. With the vast majority of decent starting defenders coming in at a higher price than last season (around 5.5 compared to 4.5 previously) and the chance of picking the correct option straight off the bat being slim, I have opted for the cheapest available options that appear to be nailed on at this stage, fully expecting to reap very minimal rewards – this, of course, is to fund my heavy-hitting midfield and attack.

Basically my plan is to sit back and see which mid-price defenders appear to be in good form and represent good value and then downgrade Juan Mata after his good fixtures to whichever cheap midfield option has started well (I have my eye on James Ward-Prowse) and then use the funds to upgrade my defence. Hopefully by then I’ll have my blueprint team and use the majority of the rest of my transfers for injuries and captain swaps.

Captain plan
The plan for Gameweek 1 is to captain Wayne Rooney on the Saturday, use my swap to Daniel Sturridge for the Sunday and then transfer out Sturridge for Diego Costa who plays Monday night, giving me three captains. As a bonus, Costa plays on Saturday in Gameweek 2 at home to Leicester and so sets me up perfectly.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, we’re running our own Fantasy Football Scout League this season and we’re hoping to top the Private League rankings once again. With a £1,000 prize to the winner, you’d be mad not to get involved. To join, visit Sky Sports Fantasy Football and key in League Name: FFScout, League Code: 8009000.

The Fantasy Football Club

This Friday The Fantasy Football Club show, where you can catch Fenners and Merse at 18:30 SkySports One HD where they will be discussing the upcoming week’s Fantasy Football, quizzing former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood and asking him for his #One2Eleven.

anyone else tempted to just pick baines and ignore the chelsea defence situation? He scored the same as terry last season with 200 less mins.

Already done it. Im viewing him as a 5th midfielder with the potential (although unlikely for the next few GW's) of a clean sheet. The only Everton player worth looking at for a while yet.

For those who are unsettled on the Ward or Clyne debate, this may help:

Clyne is more of a risk than Ward is. We're all forgetting that Southampton are a completely different team now. No Lovren, No Shaw, No Chambers, No Lallana, No Lambert, and a new manager. Southampton's defence was weak towards the end of last season, and they still had Lovren, Shaw, Chambers, Lallana and Lambert then - and they still had Pochettino! Imagine how worse it will be now.

Ward is still a slight risk with Pulis leaving, but I don't think it will make a drastic difference. Kelly has arrived at the club yesterday, which will only make them stronger at the back. And I don't know much about Keith Millen, but if he's managed them before and kept clean sheets against Everton and Hull, he must be pretty decent until they get a new manager.
And for those worrying about Moyes joining - we're forgetting that Moyes was a great manager for Everton and Preston.

I can see why Clyne seems the better pick, but if we flip it around - let's say that Pulis left Crystal Palace a few months ago, and Millen had been in charge for a while, and we'll say that Pochettino had left Southampton today, and they've only just hired a new manager - Ward seems like the better choice, right? Correct.

But then let's say - both Pochettino and Pulis left their clubs at the same time, and we forget about the managers and focus on the squad. We'd all notice that Palace have a stronger squad, they're in much better condition defensively and throughout last season, Palace were a lot stronger at the back.

Now, I'm not sure if this has convinced any of you or not, but Ward is definitely the much better pick for me.

So I'm jumping on the secret Diouf bandwagon. He's jsut the right price bracket , feeling I'm quite balanced with this team:

    Bego - Gilks

    Debuchy - Clyne - Ferdinand - Chester - Duff

    Mata - Ramsey - Fabregas - Sterling - Marney

    Rooney - Costa - Diouf

So with the new shirt numbers out for Chelsea, do we think they hint at anything?

    Cech - No.1

Newcastle in 2010. Breezed the Championship. Reading in 2006 setting an unbeaten record. QPR limped over the line last season, they were terrible in comparison

I get where he is coming from. They have bought well and there 11 is quite good now in comparison with burnley and leicester but they aren't the best ever promoted team.

I think their defence will be good though.

They are probably stronger now than both Burney and Leicester, but saying they are the best ever promoted team is hilarious. To humor him though...

Harper, Collocini, Enrique, Williamson, Simpson, Nolan, Barton, Gutierrez, Guthrie, Carroll, Ameobi

Newcastle's 2010 squad and, at their best, probably still better than the team 'Arry took up last season

Has there been anything posted anywhere that shows good rotations amongst GKs and DEFs? Last year I came across a really useful spreadsheet but haven't seen anything this time around

    Dzeko
    Jovetic
    Giroud

Are any of them completely nailed on from the start? Would consider playing 3-5-2 or shoehorning in Sturridge is not.

    Thanks all

Dzeko. Giroud not nailed on. AW has options to play Alexis up top and has experimented with Sanogo particularly given Besiktas

which defence do we have the most faith in

    a) Palace
    b) Hull
    c) Swansea

These seem to be the only teams that go well in rotation with QPR, Saints and Leicester

Looks like your defence is along incredibly similar lines to me. I've decided to dodge Palace due to the Pulis situation, and uncertainty over who will start at full back, Hull due to Europa League commitments and general doubts over their quality, and go for Swansea. Giving me a backline of Terry, Clyne, Ferdinand, N Taylor and Moore.

Prefer Nasri to Silva. Could do Young to Albrighton but think Young could be a decent 4th/5th mid. Haven't really considered a team without Alexis..call it sentiment I guess but given he can/will play up top occasionally I can't say no.

I'd be all over Bony (don't be cheap) if I thought he was going to play with his head screwed on straight. But he hardly featured in pre-season and he obviously wants a big move.

Will he be putting himself in the shop window or sulking? Any Swans fans around who've seen him play this summer?

Depends how far along negotiations are...might not need to put himself in the shop window but just avoid injury...And he might still move abroad leaving you with having to make a transfer.

He was one of my first picks initially but too many rumours swirling around and different system with Gomis, and lack of much pre-season as you say. Probably gonna be a liverpool player soon anyway 😉

Bony to Pool sounds good for you but not so good for us Fantasy players. Can't see how he could play with Sturridge so they'd be rotating, right?

BR could accommadate both but it would be up in the air at first for sure. Much prefer Bony at Swans from an FPL perspective but yes it would be a great signing for us indeed
