Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City ease past Liverpool 3-1. Sergio Aguero emerges from the bench to score once again, with a Pablo Zabaleta own goal denying the hosts a second clean sheet of the season.

Jovetic at the Double
The City striker proved a deadly differential in last night’s encounter with Liverpool by bagging a brace in the 3-1 win. Sold by over 24,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers last week, Jovetic sat in less than 5% of Fantasy teams as the Reds rolled up to the Etihad but, handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko once again, he rediscovered the form that saw him net five times in pre-season and delivered a 13-point return for his owners.

Now down to 7.9 in FPL, Jovetic seems in the driving seat to retain a starting berth at home to Stoke next weekend and arguably has the platform to edge ahead of Dzeko in the pecking order. The latter was forced off with a leg problem midway through the second period, though Manuel Pellegrini was optimistic of his chances after the match:

“Edin had a kick that gave him some trouble with his leg but I don’t think it is anything important. We will see tomorrow but I think he will be okay.”

Quick-Fire Aguero Nets Again
Once again, the Argentine demonstrated that he needs little time to make an impact for City. Having netted just seven minutes into his substitute appearance at Newcastle last week, Aguero scored 23 seconds after climbing off the bench to breach the Liverpool backline and bring him onto Fantasy radars ahead of the home clash against Stoke. Granted, Manuel Pellegrini’s team sheets underline he’s clearly determined to protect Aguero as he returns to match sharpness, but if Dzeko fails to recover, the little Argentine could be let loose against the Potters.

Kolarov the fall-guy
Despite putting in a strong attacking display in the clean sheet at Newcastle, it was Aleks Kolarov who was sacrificed for Pablo Zabaleta’s return to the starting XI. Gael Clichy switched to his preferred left-back role, leaving Kolarov on the bench as an unused sub. With Bacary Sagna also now an option for Pellegrini, the full-back situation is looking complex and difficult to read. Secure investment in the City back four looks limited to Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany once again, then.

Reds Unconvincing in Etihad Loss
A late own goal by Pablo Zabaleta was all the Reds had to show for last night’s display. Coming off the back of a narrow home win over Southampton, there are signs that Liverpool may take some time to adjust to life without Luis Suarez. The late introduction of Rickie Lambert suggests the former Southampton man will be no more than Brendan Rodgers’ “Plan B” in the latter part of matches, though Raheem Sterling owners will be a little concerned that the youngster’s minutes were curtailed to allow Lambert pitch time.

In defence, Rodgers has concerns over full-backs Glen Johnson and Albert Moreno who picked up injuries. The former was forced out of the action due to a thigh problem, whilst the Spaniard picked up a sprained ankle on his debut. With a trip to Spurs up next, the Reds defence looks unlikely to chalk up their first shut-out of the season in light of last night’s display, though the schedule does improve significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Sold Jovetic before his price drop- was thinking Aguero would reclaim his spot after this week... 🙁

I just have to hope that I am one of the 2%ish that has Pelle and the Koeman has finally got his boys getting the crosses where they need to be.

    Current back 5 and GK

    Krul // Foster

    Chambers // Chester // Vlaar // Taylor // PvA

    a) Sell Chambers (Rotation risk)

    b) Sell Vlaar (Poor fixtures)

    c) Sell Chester (Suspended/Rotation risk)

Is Yoshida a suitable 4.5 replacement for any of the above given who I already have?

    or

    Mutch > 5.0 and upgrade 4.5 defender > Bertrand/Rose?

No, yoshida's spot could be in jeopardy from Gardos. Fonte won't be dropped being captain, it would be Yoshida.

How is the signing of ADM going to affect Mata? My guess is that it's not going to help him at all, but obviously from a fantasy perspective, it's wise to wait and see what happens.

The only formation that I can think of that will play to both players strengths is the 4-2-3-1 that we've actually been using on and off for several seasons now.

    -------------------DDG----------------------
    Raf/ToniV --Jones -- Rojo -- Shaw
    --------Carrick-------New CM-----------
    -----Di Maria----Mata----Rooney-----
    -------------------RVP----------------------

I don't think that LVG is familiar with playing this system at all, and even if he is, it's not one he favours. So on this basis alone I can't see him going with it. Also I can't see Roon being either effective or happy on the left for very long.

So basically we are going to see a 3-5-2 with Mata dropped and ADM in the hole or we are going to see a 4-3-3 with either Roon/Mata dropped and the one who isn't dropped playing out of position.

Just don't see how it's going to work out for Mata at all. And it's a shame because he's a quality player, just not as good as ADM

It should be more like 4-3-1-2:

      -------------------DDG----------------------
      Raf/ToniV --Jones -- Rojo -- Shaw
      -----Di Maria--Harera--Someone-----
      -------------------Mata-----------------------
      ------------RVP------Rooney-------------

Having watched them on Saturday, it was more a problem of Cleverly and Fletcher constantly giving the ball away. (Although thinking back to a certain world cup game, DM could be an issue there as well occasionally!)

We just do not know whats going to happen. Di Maria can work in the wingback role, because he can track back. But for 60 odd million, you have to expect that he will be used in a 4-3-3.

        • 12 Years

They lack defensive strength at wingback, last thing they need is a poor defensive/good attacking player there.

As a utd fan, I'd love to see mata sold. Scrap the back 3 idea, go back to playing 4 def, and play Di maria & janujaz either side of ONE OF either RVP or rooney. Would give defences much more trouble plus would allow 3 central midfielders. Really hope LVG does this.

I might play Marney this week if I had him. Utd defence is wrecked.

You've got a good core, and you can manage the injuries and suspensions with transfers and substitutions. No need to WC.

So first move is going to be DDG -> Krul.

Then I'll have 2FTs and 1.0 in the bank to rearrange and get Aguero.

Last season, I performed major surgery on my team at least three times to get aguerro in, and every time, he got injured. I know that I'm gonna end up doing it again this year.

Diarra and Maiga left West Ham ages ago, wonder if FPL towers will leave them in all season. 0.2% of people still put Diarra in!

Bojan and ElAhamdi about to drop in price tonight.

Should I ship both 4point hit. My thinking at the moment is Cattermole in hopefully get a .1 price rise out of him by int. Break end. Bojan for 5.5 option.

Cap cup midweek too but really dont want to risk losing monies and regretting when I'm trying to make up .1 to get Fab in

    My thinking A) sound
    B) silly

5.4 for Bojan may just push everyone into Naismith 🙁

So I sold Jovetic on Saturday night, so got his haul, but now worried about no City attack

    No FTs either 🙁

Bloody Total FPL! I may block it as the price drops/rises always push me into transfers too early 🙁

A two parter for you guys

What to do you think is more important CS points for your Defenders and Goalkeepers

    or

Goal and Assist points for your Midfielders and Forwards

and is okay for 1GW only to sacrifice a potential low points tally from your Defenders to get a high points tally from your Attackers

    Any ideas would be welcomed

    TIA

In my view CS points are more predictable and reliable, so good value in defence (whether cheap or expensive) will bear fruit long term. Attackers are more reliant on form, but can still have a poor GW FPL-wise, even if the team wins and they play well. Therefore... Over one gameweek if you can guarantee attacking points, that's better, but you can't really guarantee attacking points.

    Begovic (Gilks)
Debuchy - Dier - Clyne (PVA - Kelly)
Ramsey - Eriksen - Sterling - Siggy (Marney)
    Rooney - Costa - Dzeko

    £0.8 in bank, 0FT

Tempted by the following, esp prior to price rises:

    A) Bego & Kelly -> Courtois & Dummett (-8)
    B) Dzeko -> Jovetic

Either worth it, or should I sit tight and still my jerking knee?

    A. Begovic, Dzeko -> Jove, Krul
    B. Dzeko -> Jove and save
    C. Dzeko, Henderson -> Jove and Siggy
    D. Dzeko, Rooney -> Aguero, Jelvaic

    Begovic Gilks
Jones Debucy Wisdom Hutton Van Arnolt
    Mata Fab Henderson Davies Ramsey
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

Bit fed up that my defenders are being sold off so quick
    Lovren and rio

Lovren will come good once the fixtures come good, would think people be better off changing their attackers

Agree on Rio - although you could potentially replace with Caulker who hasmore of a goal threat. As for Lovren, i, like many others, are looking to sell. He is really not much of a goal threat, and Liverpool do not look solid defensively. Who to replace him with though. That's the question. Clyne is one option.

You might as well hold for stoke at home, but certainly worth ditching there after, no matter how well he does.

What do you think about this team? Got 1 FT and 0 mill in the bank.

    Begovic
    Jones Clyne Naylor
    Mata Fabregas Ramsey Siggy
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

    Gilks; Davis, PVA, Wisdom

Thinking Dzeko -> Jovetic. Or should I save? Or should I do something else?
