Projecting Value – The Goalkeepers

Obtaining a better balance to your squad is fundamental to Fantasy success. It’s all very well selecting the likes of Frank Lampard and Robin Van Persie but if such luxury choices leave you rummaging around the bargain basement for players that offer little returns, it’s perhaps time for a re-think.

Since the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2011/12 game launched on late Thursday evening, we’ve been working away in the background and, after many hours of number-crunching, have produced our first set of Projected Points Returns for the upcoming season.

The factors taken into consideration with our Projections are varied- past performance, team tactics, possible rotation, the impact of new signings, susceptibility to injury, the new FPL Bonus Points system and even January 2012‘s African Cup of Nations come into the equation. As pre-season continues and the season unfolds, we will update these figures on a regular basis to offer an up-to-date reflection of each player’s potential going into Gameweek one. Our full list of “Projections” will be released on the Members Area early next week but, over a series of articles, we’re going to start to dissect them right here and now for our Members.

Our aim is to help shape your Fantasy squad for the upcoming campaign with a series of articles highlighting those players who come out favourably in one of the most vital categories- value per Fantasy pound. By identifying the likely returns on offer next season, we pick our way through the positions and look, in the main, at the low-to-mid-price candidates who will hopefully provide that all-important balance required for your Fantasy squad ahead of the start of next season.

We kick off by turning our attentions to the top ten goalkeepers…

      For a better balanced team, i would say

      10 GK
      30 DF
      35 MF
      25 FW

      But thats off the top of my head, we are only a few million out. I'd rather spend 5m more on 2 players than 3m more on 2 less players (Attack/Defence)

        Mine has worked out as.......

        9.5 GK
        28.5 DF
        35 MF
        27 FW

        So similar to my original estimation. Personally, I think I've got it about right. But some would say, less in defence and more in the middle. I have Baines Kompany Collins and two rotating 4.5's (Yet tbc) But I see Baines as a sixth midfielder, so am prepared to splash the cash on him, and my arguement is that i've spent that little extra midfield money, theoretically on a midfielder in defence. If that makes any sense what so ever.

        Yeah I can see that, if the mid actually create chances, buying a Mcleish forward though....just seems wrong! BP changes could alter teams a lot....

          Apart from corners and free kicks I would not be surprised if he scored every single goal for Villa this season, even if they don't score many thats still plenty for Bent.

    Thinking the bottom option is a lot better, gives me this starting team which Im pretty happy with -

          Van Persie scores consistently, Rod doesn't. Don't see any reason why it's unlikely for RVP to do well against both Newcastle away and Liverpool at home. The game at Old Trafford is obviously a risk but its not impossible for the opposition to score/assist there.

    3rd starting defender will always be weak. Really wanted RVP but thought it was worth going Saurez to afford VDV over Yaya.

          If N'Zogbia stays with Wigan then Rodallega will score goals much more often but without N'Zogbia he'll lose N'Zogbia's assist and attaking potential for him to get the goals. Ba from Newcastle may be a better option than Rodellega if N'Zogbia leaves.

    Watching LA Galaxy v Man City delayed on ESPN, Balotelli (pen) 1-0 and I start thinking to myself maybe i need Balotelli hmmm 9m ehh, he could be my secret weapon.

    Thankfully normal service resumed a few minutes later, Balotelli clean through on goal turns around and backheels the ball wide! The rest of the city team are as seething as the yank commentators on ESPN and he's hooked by Mancini on 30 minutes, queue throwing water bottles and a dugout domestic!
