We cast a final glance back towards Gameweek 3 this morning. Chelsea’s deadly front man, Liverpool’s display at the Lane and the encouraging form of a number of budget strikers all come into consideration.

The Player

On Thursday, the press were united in suggesting he’d be out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. On Friday, Jose Mourinho described him as a “big doubt” for Chelsea’s trip to Everton. On Saturday, Diego Costa scored twice and grabbed the maximum bonus points in a 6-3 rout at Goodison, badly burning the 155,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who decided to part company with the summer signing ahead of the weekend deadline.

He’s been bothered by hamstring problems before but Costa, clearly, is made of stern stuff – last season he started 34 of Atletico’s 38 league matches on the way to the La Liga title. Already with four strikes to his name, his consistency compares very favourably to team-mate Eden Hazard – Costa has already scored three times on his travels, just one fewer than the Belgian managed away from Stamford Bridge over the entire 2013/14 campaign.

With Cesc Fabregas pulling the strings in midfield and Costa’s predatory nature in the box, Mourinho’s side look full of goals right now and the Spain international could well be on course to replicate last term’s 28-goal heroics for Atletico. Snapped up by over 240,000 FPL managers already this week, Costa may not quite scale the heights of Luis Suarez as a Fantasy asset but, from what we’ve seen so far, he may be as close as we can hope for this season.

The Team

A patchy home win over Southampton on the opening day of the season highlighted that Liverpool were still finding their feet after the Uruguayan’s departure. Defeat at City hardly helped instil confidence as the Reds rolled up to face a Spurs side that had yet to concede under Mauricio Pochettino but the manner of their emphatic victory suggests Brendan Rodgers’ side are still a Fantasy force to be reckoned with.

Switching to a midfield diamond, with Raheem Sterling tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge and debutant Mario Balotelli, the Merseysiders tore apart the Tottenham rearguard with a display that could easily have harvested more than three goals. The attacking trio now brace themselves for a superb run of fixtures that is sure to bring significant investment Liverpool’s way – heading into the next six Gameweeks (AVL, wh, EVE, WBA, qpr, HUL) without at least one of Sterling and Sturridge on board looks a risky tactic.

At the back, too, the attacking thrust offered by summer signing Alberto Moreno down the left has already come to fruition emphatically at the Lane. With Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel sidelined through injury last weekend, the Reds backline expertly marshaled their opponents in the final third, and with new boys Dejan Lovren and Javier Manquillo also starting alongside Moreno and Mamadou Sakho, there’s cause for optimism at both ends of the pitch for Rodgers’ side right now.

The Talking Point

As Costa headed into the weekend with question marks hanging over him, Fantasy managers loaded up on City pair Stevan Jovetic and Sergio Aguero for the home clash against Stoke. Their failure to deliver, allied with United’s toils at Burnley and Sturridge’s blank at Spurs, came at a time where many budget forwards put their names forward as potential contenders for our three-man frontlines.

After three Gameweeks of the new season, five of the top eight forwards are priced at 6.0 and under. Steven Naismith and Andreas Weimann have already delivered 20+ points for their owners, while Saido Berahino, Nikica Jelavic and Leonardo Ulloa are all pushing to be this year’s Jay Rodriguez.

Right now, with such a wealth of budget options to consider, many may be tempted to spend big in midfield and potentially snap up Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic at the back, bringing more 3-5-2 formations into contention than ever before.

For others, it’s only a matter of time before the premium forwards start to deliver, though. As mentioned, Liverpool’s run of matches will surely afford Sturridge the chance to get amongst the goals again, while the arrival of Radamel Falcao at United looks very tempting – crucially, the Colombian would be a real differential to the 42%-owned Wayne Rooney and is priced at 11.0 to Rooney’s 10.5. With the prolific Costa looking unstoppable, a trio of heavy-hitters up top looks just as enticing.

For the sake of our Fantasy seasons, though, we need the likes of Naismith and Ivanovic to flourish in order to offer more variety amongst out 15-man squads. It can only be beneficial to the Fantasy games and managers alike that, as we head into Gameweek 4, there’s less agreement than ever on the 2014/15 “template team”.

It could be the track pad on your laptop causing the issue. Do you rest your hands or hand on your laptop? The track pads are generally very sensitive.

You can rule it out by disabling the track pad.

Press and hold the FN key and press one of the F keys which has the track pad symbol next to it (its usually F5) and this should disable it. Doing the same again would enable it. So once you've done it test it and make sure it has been disabled.

Test it for a bit and see how you get on.

Wireless mice sometimes do weird stuff like this when the batteries are on their way out - could be that! Also getting a cheese-based mouse mat usually sorts them out behaviour-wise. More docile.

Anyone else joining me on saving the wildcard?

For my own reasons, I find it could very well be more beneficial to save the precious WC. Unless you have had an awful start or have been unfortunate enough to be riddled with injuries/suspensions - this is why I'm keeping mine:

    1. Price changes - I normally like to 'play the market' as I'm sure many others do, but the price changes sites we normally rely on (TotalFPL/Fiso, etc.) haven't been too accurate so far. If I'm going to use the WC, I want to make sure I'm going to make a fair amount of profit when transfers in/out are at their peak.

    2. New signings - We've all seen some interesting transfers, most notably Falcao (11m), Welbeck (6.9m) and Hernandez (7m). While its highly tempting to get the new shiny player in ASAP - I'd prefer to use my WC at least the week after their first game, where I've been able to see how they settle in, what position they take up, how/if they are rotated at all. These are questions we don't know the answers too (we can look at a players history/goalscoring record in other leagues, but as we know this does not always result in the same performance in the Premier League).

    3. Mini League Rivals - In my league, a few of my rivals have activated their wildcard, which may work into my favour. By GW4, I'll see all the players they have brought in as they'll have 'shown their hand' so to speak. While the most important thing is to concentrate on your own game, I think it can be useful to see their strategy/line up. For example, if you are in the lead and your opponent brings in a player on their WC who has a good week, you can then bring in some of these players yourself and effectively 'block' their points.

Its worth noting the obvious reasons to use the WC are the two week gap for price changes and the International games where players can easily be injured, as well as being able to get a potential head start on your rivals - but I just feel the above outweigh this benefit.

tl;dr - My personal advice is to save your WC as you will be able to see which players settle and become FPL gold.

For me, it's something to use simply when you feel your team is no longer 'good', or when a player that you don't have becomes essential, that would require multiple hits to house.

This year, I'm planning to hold onto it as long as possible, and will hopefully be able to save it until after January, when DGWs start to come thick and fast.

I posted a very basic post on sane subject a few pages back... & yes, you're right

I'm only needing to change 3/4 players really & that's mainly to get Falcao in!

I used my 1FT to do it, and I don't regret it because if Wazza drops, then I wouldn't have had the money to do it. Can always come back to Rooney (when he's cheaper) if Falcao doesn't work out.

What is with the 'wait on Falcao' business?

As poor as United have been we will be near a full strength XI with people returning from injuries and have nearly a fortnight to get things together before QPR at home.

Falcao isn't the type of forward that needs to adjust to surroundings. He plays, he scores, that simple. If you choose to leave him this GW, go for it, but you will be missing out.

    any other Ultimate players here?

I am very annoyed about the whole transfer situation. the rules clearly state all transfers will reset to zero at the end of the august transfer window. I would have saved all my transfers until next week after all deals are done and internationals are played to monitor any injuries etc.....

the wording was a little strange in the rules so I even emailed them and was told transfers would be reset to zero at the end of the transfer window and not september 13th.

when I logged on today I still had the 2 transfers I didn't use....

i feel in a competition where money is involved it puts people who followed the rules at a severe disadvantage by using their transfers earlier

sell Mata, he's free falling in price, and in that price range you have Cesc, Ramsey or Sterling.

Such a shame! He is still a class player, just moved to the wrong team. If he was at Arsenal or somewhere where he was appreciated he'd be smashing it this season. Yeah just shifted him for Sterling on my WC, sad days!

Williams. Jones. Clyne (Hutton. Wisdom )
    Fab. Sterling. Siggy. Ramsey (king)
    Balotelli. Costa. Rooney

Or play 352 with these changes

    Given to Mannone
    King to Di Maria
    Balotelli to Naismith

You think Costa will get rotated? he barely was for Atleti iirc. I think Remy is just back-up in case of injuries and also as super sub, and an option on the wing. Fancy him to get more or atleast the same no. of minutes as Falcao

Yep. Think people are getting a bit carried away with the Falcao hype. Atleast wait till we look like resembling a top half team, or till his role is clear with RVP and Rooney all fit too.

yes, but with that salary and his quality, there's no way he's not nailed on as a 9. If LVG wants to play RVP, Rooney and Falcao, I reckon he'll move Rooney in the hole and play the two others up front. Mata can find a comfortable spot on the bench.

This season could be best ever. So many options in midfield and attack. And no Suarez, RVP all time captain. Also the prices aren't rocket rising so everyone is not possible. There have to be some tough and difficult decisions.

    Can't wait
