Despite his exertions for Uruguay in this month’s Copa America, it seems Luis Suarez may well be ready for Liverpool’s opening game of the season at home to Sunderland.

The forward has been given a three-week break by his club but reports have surfaced in this morning’s papers suggesting he will cut short his holiday in preparation for the start of the 2011/12 campaign.

Suarez, voted Player of the Tournament for Uruguay as they swept aside Paraguay in Sunday‘s final, has already had a substantial rest period over the past few months; while at Ajax, he served a seven-match ban for biting an opponent in late November last year and had a fortnight break prior to the Copa America. Fears of burn-out, therefore, seem slightly off the mark.

While there has been no official line from either club or player on the matter, the story, nevertheless, carries significant weight for Fantasy managers as they continue tinkering with their squads ahead of the season opener on 13th August.

Liverpool’s starting trio of matches reads (SUN, ars, BOL) and Suarez, priced at just 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has already shown in the second half of last season just how integral he will be to Kenny Dalglish’s side next term- a look at our Members Area confirms we have similarly high expectations for Suarez in 2011/12. For those looking for early Liverpool forward investment, Andy Carroll, at 10.0, looks the better bet until the situation offers more clarity.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Given-Schwarzer

    Taylor S-Johnson(WOL)-Alcaraz-Kompany-Bardsley

    VDV-Taarabt-Moses-Sessegnon-Albrighton

Zamora's seems a better choice to me. Wigan are completely unpredictable, often struggle against supposedly weaker teams. rodalegga can't hit a barn door & they've lost their best attacker.
Moses makes more sense cos he's so cheap.

Keep Baines and Saurez OR go Roonatic and a 5.5 defender (Rafael or one of Cahill/Jagielka/Samba if they go to Arsenal).

Baines too pricey for me. I'd go Roonster GW1 plus a Wigan Def (Alcaraz), then look to switch Roon to Chelski forward and upgrade Wigan Def to Ful/Sun/AV over the next GW or two.

    Finally struck upon a selection I'd be happy to go with if the season started tomorrow;

    Given
    Baines Kompany Cole
    Lampard N'Zogbia Downing VDV
    Holt Zamora Rodallega

    (Al Habsi, Ferguson, Simpson, Wilkinson)

Bench is bargain basement fodder so the first 11 won't change. Would have liked Bent, but can live without to accomodate midfield. Potentially looking at Rodallega and Lampard out, V Persie (or A.N.Other big scoring striker) and the best of the 6.5's in at GW4.

    Done!

If you really want to start with that first 11 go for it but youwil lfind it hard to get one of the big strikers in without a points hit..

Change Al Habsi for Ruddy (if you are not starting Al Habsi with his GW1 fixture then there is no point in paying that extra 0.5 for him).

Use the 0.5 to change Ferguson for a 4.5 who will play veery week so he will come in if there is an injury (Dyer at Swansea maybe?)

Keep an eye on Wilkinson, if he looks set to start game she looks a great option at 4.0 (if it looks unlikely swap out for a defender from QPR who will play every game)

Who is the essential Citeh mid - Silva right? My reservation at the moment is that he won't be so involved in the assists and goals though may pick up decent BPs. Thinking of Downgrading him so I can fit in Suarez or Bent... leaving my mid field consisting of:

    Nzog, Lamps, Moses, Taraabt.

I just think Norwich are going to find it tough to create anywhere near the chances they created last season and as a result he'll find it tough.

Home to WBA looks the only decent game in their first 6 games but even they seem to have tightened up under Roy.

      A) Silva, Beattie, Zamorra

      or

      B) Sinclair, Suarez, Holt

Holt is on Pens and I do suspect he'll be stepping up even if he isn't getting a lot of other chances. Just my Opinion - though there will always be a need to leverage his inclusion against other picks.

sorry posted this in an older thread by mistake. Ferguson of Newcastle is the only MF priced at 4.0m. I presume it is a mistake by the FPL. Does anyone think they are likely to change his price? I doubt it as they have never done it before.

I can see his price increasing a fair bit as people buy him in to free up some cash.

I would worry about kelly starting & ben arfa being injured. Not super keen on your front line, but at least it is different

Ben Arfa got injured, possibly out for 6 weeks. It might be that Kelly starts but it is defo a risk.

Personally i would prefer Rodallega to Zamora. I know Wigan aren't great, its just that I would never trust Fulham to do anything when playing away

Nice but if Kun signs then replace him with Tevez and you will have spare to boost elsewhere.

How come? I can't say I've watched Sunderland much but wouldn't Browns versatility and the fact they just bought him make him a more likely starter? I'm sure I'm wrong but just wondering what the situation is.

Bramble one of Bruce's favourites (plus he's excellent anyway), started last season really well picking up BP's in his first few games if memory serves correctly, until he got injured. Always a goal threat from set pieces. Prone top the odd rash challenge is the only downside.

Thought this might be of interest, but on first viewing of the projection figures, I've come to the conclusion that – if you believe the numbers - your best long term strategy is to spend your money on the premium defenders. Load up on Baines, Johnson, Vermaelen and Kompany and you are set for the season. For the rest of the team you have room for one premium striker (Suarez) and one premium midfielder (Fat Lump).

Now I just need to compare last year's projections with the final points total to see how accurate they were.

The problem is viewing it in pairs I think Baines + Wilshere = 13.0 or N'Zogs + Hughes = 13.0. Defenders might be better value for money overall but you can get better value from the cheaper defenders than you can MFers.
Unless of course you play 4 or 5 at the back.
Also the golden rule of never captain a defender comes into play and you have a lack of captaincy options with a strong back 3.

The value difference does not come from choosing the best value players since price levels mean that defenders will always be "better value". It comes in comparative value where you get more additional points from the marginal spend in defenders rather than strikers or midfielders.

The projections tell you a final total but a points per game rating is far more important as you can transfer players easily. RVP may be projection 185 points but as this is over 27 games is PPG rating is the highest. Also you need to consider that you want a range of good captain choices.

It's a fair point that I have not factored in some allowance for expected injuries. ALthough one key problem with the points per game ratio is that sometimes you do not know when players are rested so may still have them in your team for these nil pointers.

The thing that the stats fail to show is when those players will scor their points - you need to leverage this info against the fixtures and add in the "black swan" factor*

*There are things we know, things we know we don't know and things we don't know we don't know.

      It's all probability.

I've never been too convinced that people are particularly good at picking players for fixtures. You'd think it was easy but I expect to find at least half a dozen cases where I will bring in (or keep) a player for an easy run of fixtures and they will fail to reward my foresight with a sackful of points. And I'm ignoring injuries here too.

I think the biggest problem with this strategy is more to do with the flexibility of the team. A heavy defence will leave the team a little unbalanced and this will take time to correct if the strategy does not pay off.

Much easier to adjust the team the other way.

3 wigan players is probably overkill, looking at your defence, think there are better options especially gibbs at 5.5 and briggs may not start.

Try RMT mark iii. I'd look at getting rid of Gibbs, Bardsley, and upgrade one of Gyan or Rodallega and downgrade the other...I'm also unsure of Yaya Toure at that price, I think wilshere at 6.5 is a better option. Kuyt is another player that needs to go.
