All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

Last post of the page reposted 🙂

    My attack:

    Hazard, Ramsey, Mata. Siggy, 4.5
    Jovetic, Rooney, Costa

    I'm planning
    Rooney + Mata -> Sterling + Falcao
with my 2 FT after all international matches are over.
That means keeping Jovetic for a little while more.

Do you think that's good idea?

      11 years, 3 months ago

I have the -exact- same front 8.

My plan is Mata -> Sterling and save the other FT. Then I can assess Rooney, Falcao and Jovetic.

This is given that RVP Falcao Rooney are all fit. If one is out, I want to keep Mata.

          I could do 4.5mid + Jovetic -> Sterling + 4.4m striker?

Thanks for answering on both pages 🙂

It's good idea, but I start to fear of not having Falcao. I think he'll do a Costa-like start of the season.

Other problem is Jovetic. He has ars, CHE in the next two. I could definitely get a better option.
Maybe use my second transfer on that?
        Jovetic + 4.5mid -> Fabregas and 4.4 forward?

Not really, because of the hard fixtures incoming.
However, I don't really see any valuable option for the same price and the only way to get Ballo, Falcao is for a hit (consider Mata -> Sterling is a done deal)

I own him, but to be honest, he has been dreadful. Even in the game he scored in, he didn't impress. Watching the game against Burnley, ADM showed far more promise. Mata seems so lacking in confidence, exemplified by his slip in front of goal after ADM picked him out with a nice cross. On Mata's preferred left foot as well. I am definitely selling either for ADM or Tadic.

What is the budget for these 5?

Tough one. Possibly Falcao, Balotelli & a 4.5 instead of Mirallas, Welbeck & Sturridge

Wilson & Robertson at the back?

    Dier, Hutton or Shawcross.

Who is the best player to own to catch the price rises up until GW4?

You've already missed one rise from Dier, so probably Shawcross. I'm not sure he'll rise twice though.

you think Dzeko starts ahead of Jove? If jove starts ahead of dzeko, then jove could be very good, w/ aguero potential assists and open space for goals w/ aguero around.

if to drop jove, who for? naismith is the obvious name, but theres others sub 8.0

        1. Tommytour
          • 15 Years

          Dzeko to start I reckon

          Pelle maybe?

what makes you think dzeko will start when jove started last game, jove had a better pre-season and scord more goals, etc etc

if dropping, then naismith, pelle, or welbeck

    2. Alberto Tomba
      • 12 Years

      2. crikey mate plenty of WC teams only have 2/3 players different to this.
I might do Jovo-> Naismith, Eriksen -> Zaha orJones to-> Moreno but their at a push.

      1. Total Foot 5
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

thnx. so you think Jove will be benched for dzeko to play along aguero?

when do you reckon you will WC? last yr lots of tams wc around gw6, thing is those pts lost btn now and lets say gw 6-9 could make a difference.

if jove starts, then i'd keep even if he only plays 70 min.
eriksen i'd wait for another game, (risk) to se if he plays the 90 or so min.
Moreno while in spain was ok nothing big, 1 goal cannot mean a trend. and pool defence last yr was a minefield.

Using my WC (Don't boo or hiss lol I have a decimated squad). How does the below look for GW4 and beyond? ...

    Mannone (Krul)
    Pieters Bertrand Kelly (Coloccini Duff)
Di Maria Fabregas Sterling Siggy (Marney)
    Wellbeck Costa Aguero

    Any feedback welcome.

Stay far away from Palace defense. Rest looks wonderful. May prefer Kelly to Moore and AdM to Hazard personally.

As much as I like Di Maria, I think one of RVP or Falcao should go into wildcard at this point. RVP should be getting many, many pks once full team is in.

Any option look glaringly better than the other?

    A) Aguero, Costa, Falcao With Sanchez and Lamela
    or
    B) Aguero, Adebayor, RVP with Hazard and Ramsey

    B more proven
    A more exciting
in the end, do you think one will really outscore the other, or fairly close?
Leaning with A for captain choice odds of scoring

    Harper/ Krul
    Moreno Chambers Wisdom
    Sterling Ramsey Hazard Siggy
    Costa Balotelli Rooney

    Who to captain?
