All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

triggerlips - i enjoy your blog and just read your WC ideas piece.
since you also like me think ramsey MIGHT have a relatively quiet spell, have you considered welbeck and tadic for ramsey and naismith? they rotate quite well for the next few and then you can make a decision who to downgrade an who to upgrade in a few weeks.

Koeman seems to like JWP though I've heard many Saints fans saying he looks not quite ready yet (apart from his dead ball delivery). One to keep an eye on I'd say - Mane has a brilliant record in Austria, if he keeps it up we have this year's Ramsey/Yaya rolled into one!

WC draft, what do you think?
    Krul - Elliot
    Pieters - Coloccini - Bertrand - Naylot - Duff
    Chadli - Sterling - Fabregas - Siggy - Ramsey
    Rooney - Naismith - Costa

This leaves me with 2.9 ITB, so I can do Rooney > Aguero before GW6 or put Falcao in etc.

Somebody is after saying that wc transfers dont count when working out price drops? Is this right? I was really hoping/needing Rooney to drop tonight and he's just hit 100% on Fpl

    1. Pasqualinho
      • 16 Years
      11 years, 3 months ago

Something has stopped him falling. He had an initial ownership of 1.5 Million and currently an NTO of 215k - That's about 14% of his total ownership selling him - well above the estimated 10% required for a drop. The WC thing is just a theory at the moment but it's a plausible one.

      1. Billy Gilmore
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Guys from TotalFPL confirmed that transfers on WC don't count, at least they haven't in previous seasons.

Thanks BG - I hadn't seen this but it does make perfect sense in this case - especially with it being a big WC week.

Would you like to Eden Hazard a guess of when/if he'll drop

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 16 Years
          11 years, 3 months ago

Educated guess? Well., if there's going to be 400k Wildcards played, nearly half of which had Rooney in before the WC, and 75% of those have taken him out, that's 150k of transfers out that don't count. So if he's 215k NTO then only 65k of these are non-wc. Putting him about halfway there. If he drops at all based on this very rough estimate it'll be late next week - maybe on the Friday rush.

garbage - as soon as you click the play transfer button, regardless of whether it's for a wildcard or not, your team is subject to the price changes and rises

if you've played your wild card and have rooney in your team, transfer him out for someone out and then buy him back in a few days for 10.4!

    3. KOKAK

Rooney may not drop as totalfpl is not trustworthy for now. Why would you want to buy him, if you do not already own him now?

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

There's one good reason - Those using WC but don't want to sell Rooney - sell him for 10.5 now and buy him back for 10.4. Instant 0.1 profit to put towards that shiny new Di Maria.

        1. KOKAK
          • 15 Years

Trade for a player dropping in price is not a good idea unless he outperforms the others in his position. Definately to sink in the long run (can never see this happening as Rooney is good in streaks)

          1. Pasqualinho
            • 16 Years
            11 years, 3 months ago

True - but just because a player is dropping in price doesn't mean he's going to perform badly. If you've got Rooney, don't want to sell him, but can see that others are selling him and you're on WC why should you suffer the TV drop when you can easily avoid it?

1.Rojo worth a shot on my WC?

    2. If I don't have Ivano should I now get him? Surely he won't score every week, but he was playing damn near striker at times recently. Being honest...my WC team looks a WHOLE LOT better without him!!
