Our last glance back at the Gameweek gone by assesses the scintillating form of Man United’s record signing. We also doff our caps to Nigel Pearson’s Leicester after another stirring display and cast an eye over the current lack of resilience shown by last year’s more reliable defences.

The Player

His team may be toiling to pick up the points but there’s no denying Angel Di Maria’s class, or immediate impact on United’s Fantasy potential. A sublime chipped goal against Leicester on Sunday, allied with an assist in the 5-3 loss, took the Argentine’s tally to two strikes and a pair of assists in the last couple of Gameweeks as the bandwagon picks up pace.

While Juan Mata’s pitch time looks to have taken a dive, with Wayne Rooney dropping deep in the Spaniard’s absence, Fantasy managers have turned to Di Maria as a secure option in the Red Devils’ midfield. Now up to 9.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with over 145,000 new owners already on board this week, he may be relatively pricey amongst fellow midfielders, but while Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have yet to justify their hefty 12.4 and 11.0 outlays, the club’s record signing has quickly found his form in the Premier League.

For all their defensive troubles, Louis van Gaal’s side have still impressed in the final third since moving to a midfield diamond – netting seven times in two matches with the new system in place, compared to two goals in the first three Gameweeks with a 3-4-1-2 formation. Certainly, given that he didn’t net more than seven times in any league campaign for former club Real Madrid, it’s a little optimistic to assume the South American can be quite so prolific, but one look at his assist numbers during his four seasons in La Liga (16, 16, 12, 18) underline just what a talent United have on their hands.

While there’s a fear Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie may ultimately share goals and assists between them, Di Maria’s contribution from the centre of the park is already becoming increasingly difficult to overlook as the standout midfield option in Van Gaal’s new-look side.

The Team

The stunning comeback win against United was merely the latest in a series of displays which suggest the Championship winners are more than capable of holding their own at the top level. For all United’s defensive frailties, let’s not forget Nigel Pearson’s side had already picked up home points against Everton and Arsenal after coming from behind on both occasions and also emerged from the Britannia with all three points – a feat only three teams managed in 2013/14.

Undoubtedly, the Fantasy jewel in the crown is Leonardo Ulloa. The summer signing sits second in the overall FPL standings after five goals in as many matches, and at just 5.7, has already received over 192,000 transfers in – strikes against Everton, Arsenal, Stoke and United underline not only his suitability to the English top-flight but his fixture-proof potential, boosting our faith in him returning points in the allegedly difficult matches.

Bearing in mind Pearson only handed Danny Drinkwater, Esteban Cambiasso and James Vardy their first starts of the season on Sunday, Leicester will fancy their chances of retaining their mid-table berth as the campaign unfolds. Vardy’s speed on the break served up a stunning goal and four assists against United, though his appeal is dented by his classification as a forward, with Ulloa clearly the man in pole position for our consideration.

Drinkwater’s seven goals and five assists in 2013/14 may well bring him onto our radars as a budget midfield option, though, whilst three favourable home matches (BUR, SWA, SUN) in the next seven, allied with trips to Palace, Newcastle and West Brom, could see some turn to Kasper Schmeichel and Liam Moore as cut-price defensive options if Pearson can instil a little more resilience to his never-say-die side.

The Talking Point

United’s King Power capitulation was just one of a number of instances in which the premium priced defences were breached yet again. While the Red Devils shipped five, Merseyside pair Everton and Liverpool leaked three apiece to Palace and West Ham – teams hardly renowned for their cutting edge in the final third. With Chelsea, City and Spurs also conceding, it meant Arsenal were the one side to justify their lofty defensive price tags, as the majority of top-flight back-lines continue to show little sign of tightening up.

A look back at the four most resilient sides from 2013/14 highlights just how quickly fortunes have changed – Chelsea, Arsenal, City and Everton have managed only one clean sheet apiece, while the likes of West Ham, Palace and Sunderland, all solid sides last time around, have yet to replicate the resilience that served us so well previously.

The lack of stability at the back is compounded by the home/away distribution of clean sheets thus far – 17 of the 29 shut-outs in the first five Gameweeks have been registered by teams on their travels. Indeed, after five rounds of fixtures, only three teams – Burnley, Villa and Southampton – have managed more than two clean sheets, with a trio apiece.

In the midst of all this, Leighton Baines has picked the perfect time to remind us of his value as a Fantasy asset. The Everton left-back – who justified his position at the top of last week’s RMT rankings – converted a spot-kick in Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat to Palace to take his tally to a goal, two assists and six bonus points in the last three Gameweeks as he soars up the standings.

While there’s an argument against investing heavily at the back, with many believing budget defenders are the way to go, Baines, like Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, continues to show that in certain cases you get what you pay for. At a time when top-flight back-lines are particularly porous and frustrating Fantasy managers, their consistency is proving to be invaluable.

I'm expecting Aguero to announce himself quite soon. Could it be this weekend against Hull? tempted to captain him while his ownership is still low.

I saved enough money to get him this week, decided to go for a 1 week punt on Adebayor (should have gone Welbeck in hindsight).

This week Ade --- > Kun

Blimey, things change a lot after one week don't they, people were starting Hutton against Arsenal a week ago.

I'd say the Hull defence isn't much better/worse than the Villa defence.

Nearly everyone will captain Costa. Big risk but it would be a perfect captain differential. Quality player, quality fixture, low ownership, few captainers. Its a perfect captaincy storm.

What happens if City are up 2-0 at 60? wouldn't aguero be taken off as he has CL on Tuesday night?

      Same obviously goes for Costa..

I'm tempted to throw my captain choice on someone else even though I have both.

Yeah I guess that is a reasonable concern. Aguero has an amazing strike rate though and 60 mins is enough time for him to score a hat-trick.

True but I believe most of his high scoring games are at the Etihad?

I have a hard time not putting my C on ADM.. I don't think LVG will have the guts to take him off early next week after what happened vs Leicester and with his form so farm can we really foresee a 2pter at home? (sure, WestHam is a better opposition than Hull bu anyway..)

I wouldn't captain ADM personally, would much prefer Costa as a safe bet. I have somewhat of a phobia against captaining midfielders though.

I need to trust my instincts more.

Best part of this week: Trusting my instinct by keeping Hazard over Fab
Worst part of this week: Ditching ADM and Ullua right at the last minute (in WC team) for Adebayor and Boyd (with a view of getting Kun)

Do people go with instinct, or follow like sheep?

      Bit of both.
I couldn't decide on who to captain this weekend, I had it on baines most of the week. On saturday morning I flipped a coin (genuinely) to decide and it landed in Rooneys favour. Should have stuck on baines!

      I go with the stats...
Sometimes this fits the narrative here & other times it does not.
Sometimes it pays off when kneejerks flame out & other times Yaya converts 60%+ of his chances.
      🙂

If you've got a sound reason to make the move you did & the only counter someone else can come up with is "Well, your choice didn't score & mine did!" then quietly smile & know after 38 weeks of these decisions you *should* come out ahead.

So I clearly need (C)osta for this weekend. The question is, how to get him!

    De Gea Gilks
    Bertrand Kaboul Wilson Ferdinand Moore
    Hazard Fabregas Sterling Sigurdsson Marney
    Rooney Adebayor Dzeko

    1.6 ITB 1FT

    Initially I was thinking:
A.) Dzeko & Hazard to Costa & Costa
    D.) Rooney & Hazard > Costa & Di Maria (-4)
    E.) WC

    Any thoughts?! 🙂

Looking at a swap deal in my draft, would you rather have...

    A) Terry and Ramsey

    or

Price and position is not an issue. I have Walcott in my team lined up hence getting rid of Ramsey.

Really!!!!!????? When Qatar were awarded the WC it was on the basis that it had to be played in the summer as usual - which now isn't going to happen - and through the payment of bribes to Sepp Blatter's cronies (just look at the £16K watch "gifts" given to Greg Dyke etc. to see what kind of cesspit culture these people inhabit). To be fair the same applied re Russia who should also have the WC taken off them.BTW I'm not saying this because I want the WC to come to England) no point given how crap the national side is or even to Europe. I just want it to go to somewhere that hasn't paid bribes to get it & where it's feasible to play the matches during the appointed months. If you think that's racism then you're living on another planet.

Still you seem like a well adjusted and modest individual given your previous comment re "as one of the most respected fpl players on this site" (BTW you're not). If you want to live in a fantasy (not FFL) world and have a chip on your shoulder re racism that doesn't exist in this case feel free but please don't spread this kind of rubbish around.

    REPOST:
    Afternoon all,

Some assistance if you would be so kind, I want rid of Naismith and Mirallas as its too early in the season for doubts over playing time!

    Begovic

    Ivanovic Clne Moreno

    Siggy Sterling Mirallas Fab

    Costa Aguero Naismith

    Guzan Naylor Quinn Moore

Is it madness to do Aguero,Mirallas,Naismith > Pelle, Welbeck, ADM?

Or just Naismith to Ulloa and hope Mirallas starts?

    It would be a -4 as I have 2ft itb and 0.3

So I clearly need (C)osta for this weekend. The question is, how to get him!

    De Gea Gilks
    Bertrand Kaboul Wilson Ferdinand Moore
    Hazard Fabregas Sterling Sigurdsson Marney
    Rooney Adebayor Dzeko

    1.6 ITB 1FT

    Current order of thinking...

    A. Dzeko & Hazard to Costa & Costa & Di Maria (-4)
    E. WC

      Still too many Costa's.
Did you give up on B, C and D?

Can you do Adebayor and Dzeko to Costa and Ulloa (I assume Pelle is too much)?

As Evans is injured and unlikely to be fit for the weekend, can anyone recommend a decent 1-3 GW defender to replace him. Have 0.6m in the bank so can bring anyone up to 6m.

Already have Moreno and Clyne. Thinking either Rojo or Azpilicueta.

    Any suggestions?

Yeah Mangala is quite a good shout but you can never be sure of who will start for City, especially with their full backs. Does anyone know how many matches Zabaleta will miss? Sagna could also be an option.

Zabaleta will serve his suspension the league cup midweek. Makes Sagna a no-go. What a waste of a move that was for Sagna.

Ulloa is the most transferred player in this week with 193950 transfers since last deadline.
Second place is Di Maria with 146510 transfers in.

Ulloa's ownership has gone up from 3.3% (if I remember correctly) on Sunday to 10% already, passing Aguero at 9.4%.

Would you spend 4 points now to fix your defence for the longer term even if you end up benching one of those players for the next 2 weeks?

    Lovren, Clyne, Ferdinand, Chester, Hutton

looking to do Chester to PVA for free
    Ferdinand to Chambers for -4

Will play 3 at the back most weeks and bench Chambers, for next 2 - But if he rises I wont be able to afford to do it and I will have other issues to solve that will use my Free's in a couple of weeks time when I need him in.

If Aguero doesn't fire over the next 2, I'll be very tempted by the following front 7 from GW8

    Di Maria Sterling Fabregas Ramsey
    Costa Welbeck Pelle

Still allows Baines or Coleman in defence too.

am looking for excuses not to get aguero too tbh, unfortunately the fixture congestion and injury fears are shared by sturridge i guess. also aguero doesn't have balotelli getting in his way.
still that 0.8mil saved could be useful, looking at something like this over here:

      sterling, siggy, hazard, ramsey/ozil
      sturridge, welbeck, lukaku

ramsey and lukaku = same money as alexis/di maria and benteke so that's a possible swap/alternative too

with baines in def. eggs in the arsenal, everton and liverpool baskets

am i the only one this doesnt make sense to?

"While there’s a fear Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie may ultimately share the goals and assists between them, Di Maria’s contribution from the centre of the park is already becoming increasingly difficult to overlook."

why would di maria then be immune to the sharing

haha, Falcao raw regarded world class in his pomp, as were RvP and Rooney.

I think the point being made is that ADM is likely to be involved in most of the goals, with the other three sharing the assist/goal with him.

I don't agree completely, but i rank them ADM, Falcao/Rooney, RvP in order of preference.

I agree. As stated in my hot topic there is a real risk that the goals/assists will be shared amongst all of Uniteds attackers, Falcao, Rooney, RVP, ADM, Mata, Herrera. All are goal scorers, all will be involved but there won't be enough goals from United to go round. They will be sharing the points.

Let's add another link to the chain of reasoning that begins with Ramires being out.

SEOULNIÑORULES started this by noting that four of Cesc's six assists have come with Ramires on the pitch.

Costa's last five goals have all come with Ramires on the pitch. Against Swansea, he did 45 mins of blanking until Ramires came on and only then did he grab his hattie.

Coincidence? Or is Ramires necessary to free Cesc up to feed Costa? Probably coincidence. But it was fun looking into it 😉

Hmmmm. Goals conceded with and without Ramires:

        Burnley - 1 GC without
Leicester - 0 GC without, 0 GC with
Swansea - 1 GC without, 1 GC with
        Everton - 3 GC with
Man City - 0 GC without, 1 GC with

        Without (226 mins) : 2 GC
        With (224 mins): 5 GC

    Begovic (McCarthy)

    Lovren Naylor Clyne (Wisdom) (Moore)

Di Maria Fabregas Sterling Siggy (Boyd)

    Costa Rooney Pelle

My plan is to save a transfer by keeping this side for the next two game weeks, and then doing Lovren to Baines and Rooney to Welbeck for GW8 when Arsenal and Everton both have nice fixture runs.

This also leaves me with 2.4 Million in the bank so would have scope to upgrade where neccessary at this time.
