Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

Does Ozil's injury affect Welbeck in any way?

Brought him in so not sure what to think 😕

Arguably for the worse, but not to the extent you'd sell/decide not to buy him.

It certainly doesn't help. As much as Ozil is maligned he is still a creative player and always looking to pass and create chances.

of course, strikers always better off with ozil than without. with those fixtures and the replacements arsenal have i dont see it being a make or breaker though

Ozil looks apathetic at times but still is a creative force to be reckoned with. It can only help Welbz having players like that around him. I'd say the impact will be minimal though.

i think that's almost solely the issue, body language. headless chickens ftw. for example alexis loses the ball 5 times, nothing. ozil loses it once, omg omg omg ozil.

Yeah. Mesut often looks demotivated but when the ball's at his feet he does look threatening mostly. And there's no doubt he takes more flak than others when he makes mistakes. Not an Arsenal fan but it's probably still tied to him leaving the pitch without thanking the fans.

What's people's views on Lallana? Looked very tidy v WBA, is he too much of a risk to take? Tempting differential from Sterling/Sturridge.

Worth a gamble. Low ownership due to being out at season start

    2. Walsh

I am starting to get a little nervy with Sterling, tbf. Their fixture pile up is pretty intense and with their next two UCL games against Real where I'm sure BR would want to throw out the best and most rested starting xi makes me very anxious as to what his team sheet will be for the QPR game. And even looking forward, for the Hull and Newc games. Lallana looked bright but if he is rested for just one of their next three prem games it would qualify to be a failed punt - unless you are looking to hold for a while. He did look really good last game though, I agree. Finally seems to have found his fitness.

That's the problem IMO, the rotational risk. Either way, I'd like to dump Sterling after the QPR game.

I am leaning towards dumping before the QPR game as I am thinking the chance of him being rested after internationals is high.

That's quite good thinking tbh. Isn't CL games after the QPR game aswell? Any idea of whom you're thinking of bringing in for him?

Yeah they have their CL game against Real three days after the QPR game. He could just as easily start both, but I'm also getting a little bored of having him along with every other Tom, Dick, and Jane who play this game. I am looking at bringing in Tadic and Mane and going a little nutty with a triple on soton attack for their kind run. Seems fun 🙂

I haven't watched Everton at all this season, but interestingly enough the stats suggest that Baines has almost been the focal point of their attack. He's currently ranked third overall in total touches (behind Yaya and Cesc) and his key pass stat is really impressive (one more than Hazard, for comparison sake).

The only concern with Leighton is Everton's instability at the back. I think if you took away that uncertainty, everybody would be scrambling to get him with the fixtures they have on the horizon. But surely Baines is having the most attacking season he's ever had, and that'll compensate for the reduction in clean-sheets?

Watched the United game and without Coleman, Baines looks like being involved in most goals... scorer, assister or assister of the assister.

I saw Van Gaal's comment post-match, where he claimed that Everton's threat came primarily from the left-flank and Baines. Didn't watch though.

He's only 26 on Saturday. So was 22 and 23 at the start of both seasons. He's improved a lot in a short space of time.

Is there, or has there ever been any correlation between Ivanovic's attacking output and Chelsea Cleanies

i.e. as one falls does the other rise ❓

    1. Kerz
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

His bursts forward can leave Chelsea vulnerable on the counter. Maybe his attacking output is indicative of Chelsea's general attacking performance, and, in general, the more he attacks the more they concede? Don't have any stats to back this up.

      • 12 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

Pretty small sample size, if only looking at this season (when I'd guess his attacking threat has increased). You've also got the difficulty of... Ivanovic is more attacking against poor teams, Chelsea are more likely to keep a clean sheet against poor teams. So attacking Ivanovic = Chelsea cleanies in that scenario. 😕

Yep...early season Chelsea conceded thee times as many chances on his side as Azpi's...it's now running a little better but still twice as many...http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/6543/

All the Baines talk on here, word of caution, Coleman will be back soon and he seemed to take a lot of Baines points last season because gave them a quality outlet on the right too

      • 12 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

When they both play, Everton still attack predominantly down the left. Coleman's best form last season was when Baines was injured.
