Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

Mesut out for up to three months. Who loses?
    1. His 114k owners may lose a FT. Not that significant - 3.4% ownership, mostly dead.

The most significant result of the injury... Who wins?
    1. ALEXIS; £10.3m
Perhaps still a bit pricey, we can at least be sure Arsenal's most expensive mid is finally nailed. He's suffered from being Wenger's second favourite luxury. Now the main man, he should play in his best position (wherever that may be) and give us a true goal-scoring premium mid.

    2. THE OX; £6.4m
Just 3 starts in 7 GWs, the Ox could be an interesting option. With injuries to Arteta, Rambo and now Ozil, Arsenal's 4-1-2-3 used this season should see them line up as Flamini; Jack,Caz; Alexis,Welbz,Ox. His minutes are bound to increase and he'd be great value if he takes his chance.

    3. SANTI; £8.2m
Could be great value, especially if he re-captures his first season form. A lot will depend on his position. With Arsenal's fixtures, he should be allowed to attack, and have increased set piece responsibility.

    4. JACK; £6.4m
Like Cazorla, it will be interesting to see how it affects him. If Arsenal could play two of Rambo/Arteta/Flamini in the double-pivot, Wilshere could play in the hole. Given a run in the team, he could be worth at a gamble at that price.

Some may say Rambo and Theo when they return. If anything, I think Ozil may hit their returns. Both prefer to break the lines, and Ozil is the man to find them. The others mentioned above will all be vying to be playmaker-in-chief. Plenty to consider.

    tl;dr:
    Ozil 🙁 = Rambo/Theo 😐 , Jack/Santi/Ox 🙂 , and Alexis 😀

Jeez...just Jeez...Watching Sky news report on the Ebola problem and how to stop it spreading...I have a good idea for a starter...Stop dozens of piggin news teams from around the world traveling there and wandering around their hospitals and graveyards...That might help for starters...Either that or STAY THERE...!!

Ebola does not spread through the air, mate. Transmission requires direct contact with bodily fluids.

It's always the problem with governments. They talk and talk until something goes badly wrong, then spend a month blaming someone else while they have some more meetings, by which time the only thing left is to isolate the region and air drop supplies.

To be clear..one news presenter yesterday was within a couple of yards of a victim outside a hospital who was refused admission for treatment...she had no protection...Why is that sort of risk necessary...and that was after trampling around a graveyard..

Has to be direct contact with blood, urine, saliva. faeces etc.

So we are just going to trust to luck that none of these news reporters, cameramen etc get it wrong in the same way the nurse in Madrid did ?...Seems a ridiculous risk to run for nothing...

Once the Genie is out of the botle...it's no longer in the bottle...which is ok if you're a Genie, but not quite so good if you're a fatal disease...

Repost from a little earlier, would like some input from you guys:

Who should my Ozil replacement be? I was kind of looking for him to be my differential, so I'm willing to go for any suggestion as long as the argument is logical.

    Current team is:

    Foster/Heaton

    Ivan / Bert / Wisdom / Naylor / Schlupp

    Siggy / Downing / ADM / Fab / OZIL

    Costa / Welbz / Pelle

    Options:-

    A) Silva
    B) Hazard
    C) Sterling
    D) Sanchez
    E) Other

Sterling, good fixtures. Huge ownership, you will get burnt if he fires up

Who is more essential to fit into this team, Aguero or Baines?

Would you drop Ivan or Fab to fit them both in?

    Krul / Mannone
    Ivanovic / Bertrand / Moore / Wilson / Taylor
    Boyd / Sigurdsson / ADM / Sterling / Fábregas
Balotelli / Ulloa / Diego Costa

2 FT 1.9M in the bank

    Begovic McCarthy
    Baines Moreno Clyne Naylor Moore
    Sterling Siggy Fabregas Tadic Boyd
    Costa Dzeko Pelle

3m itb, 1 FT. I am torn between Dzeko > Welbeck / Sturridge. Any better suggestions

So I have bought Baines in on my wildcard. As a first time owner I am looking forward to seeing how he does over a good run of fixtures. What are you predictions for his returns for the next 8-10 gameweeks? What kind of % of his points are normally attacking and defensive?

Afraid that most of his points will be 70-80% attacking, Everton not looking good in defence.

Might be better with Coleman back when fully fit. Although this could also detract from Baines attacking returns.

I am more than happy to rely on attacking returns with the odd clean sheet. The fixtures really are good, and if he combines attacking returns with a clean sheet it is almost nailed on maximum bonus points

Apart to start watching Luther on Netflix, is it any good or shouldn't I bother?

Just finished Homeland and looking for something else...

S1 was good, S2 was decent and I quit 2 episodes into S3.
I watch a lot of series and hardly ever quit one early. It was just that bad.

In need of some good advise here gents.

          My team: DDG (Myhill)

          Dummet - Wisdom - Clyne - Baines - Hutton

          Siggy - ADM - Sterling - Fabz - Albrighton

          Pelle - Ulloa - Costa

          4.3ITB. 1FT
My defense and keeper could be better, but nothing really stands out for me to do here. Also not sure about Ulloa. Albrighton is just benchfodder.

          Thanks!

After selling Costa when he got "injured" and paying the price for that, I'm now in the process of doing almost the same with Di Maria. My plan is to wait 3 gameweeks and then do Fabregas -> Di Maria, need 2 transfers to make it so can't do it this week anyway and no need to do it the following 2 gameweeks either then... right?

          Schmeichel
          Clyne Ivanovic Duff
          Sigurdsson Henderson Sterling Fábregas
          Pellè Costa Agüero

          Subs: Krul Chadli Dummett Wisdom

Di Maria and Costa are pretty much the only must haves, and season keepers providing they stay fit.

I agree that you have a bit of an overspend in the midfield
If the next few gameweeks are tough for united, as you'd expect, ADM's price is unlikely to rise as fast. Your other mids are fairly likely to rise themselves, so the lost value might be modest.

On the other hand, another good week for ADM and you will be losing cash fast

Yes will do that soon, but not sure which, they are all so good pick the next 3 gameweeks

with a diffuse axonal injury his recovery is sadly going to be slow, and the gains are likely to be small.
he's lucky to be alive though, but i don't think he's not going to race again.
Shame because the guy looked like a real talent.

At the end of the season he'll end near the top of the pile points wise for a defender, + Everton have got a great run of fixtures coming up
