Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 9 – Sunday

Samuel Eto’o bags a brace as Everton ease past Burnley. United clinch a last-gasp point at home to Chelsea thanks to Robin van Persie, whilst Alan Pardew’s half-time changes inspire Newcastle to victory at the Lane.

Van Persie Leaves it Late

Robin van Persie struck his third goal in five appearances late in injury time to earn United a 1-1 home draw with league leaders Chelsea. He may be far from justifying his 12.4 price tag, but the Dutchman is at least providing the goals to raise the Red Devils’ hopes of a title challenge and looks in pole position to retain the lone striker role ahead of Radamel Falcao, should Louis van Gaal continue with his current formation when the Colombian recovers from a knock. With Wayne Rooney also back from suspension next week, however, Fantasy managers will have to wait and see how the United boss opts to line up from here on in.

Angel Di Maria disappointed his 39.5% ownership by serving up a blank against the Blues but the underlying stats remain strong – the former Real Madrid man still, nonetheless, produced four attempts on goal and five key passes across the 90 minutes. Although some owners may now be considering selling for Alexis Sanchez or Eden Hazard before next weekend’s deadline, Di Maria does have three excellent home fixtures in his next four from Gameweek 11 onwards (CPL, HUL, STK) – a schedule that could see him rack up the points once again.

Drogba Proves an Able Deputy

Jose Mourinho’s side still remain undefeated, even without talismanic striker Diego Costa, who didn’t travel to Old Trafford. Instead, it was left to Didier Drogba to do the business up top – the Chelsea legend nodding home his first Premier League goal since 2012 in his first league start of his second tenure at Stamford Bridge. With basement-dwellers QPR up next for the Blues, question marks remain over whether Mourinho will risk Costa, whose combination of hamstring and illness problems could be set to frustrate his declining band of owners yet further. Chelsea have picked up four points in the two matches without the Spain striker and with another international break around the corner, it remains to be seen whether his manager will feel it necessary to rush him back into action.

Elsewhere for Chelsea, Branislav Ivanovic was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence yesterday – an incident that consequently led to United grabbing the equaliser – though the 7.3-priced defender will serve his ban in the midweek Capital One Cup clash with Shrewsbury Town and will be available for selection once more against QPR in Gameweek 10.

Toffees Front Two See Off Burnley

Everton strike duo Samuel Eto’o and Romelu Lukaku were both amongst the goals yesterday in a 3-1 win at Burnley. The former bagged a brace in just his second start of the campaign, whilst Lukaku continued to show signs of consistency, notching a fourth in his last six appearances, with bonus points also acquired in two of those displays.

With European commitments to consider, Roberto Martinez’s rotation policy is paying off for the Toffees right now – it’s two consecutive wins in the league, with three goals scored in each of those fixtures. Having impressed against Aston Villa last weekend, Ross Barkley was victim to his manager’s rotation this time round and made just a 26-minute cameo from the bench in the victory. Steven Naismith did, however, retain his starting spot, though the Scot disappointed his 25.4% ownership with his fifth blank his last six outings and was fielded on the flank in order to accommodate Eto’o in a central role alongside Lukaku.

Baines’ Blistering Form Continues

The left-back notched yet another assist and also walked away from Turf Moor with two bonus points to ensure his place atop the Fantasy Premier League defender rankings. A total of six assists is already more than Baines managed across the entire 2013/14 season, and with the Toffees’ kind upcoming fixtures in mind (SWA, sun, WHM), his imperious form looks set to continue. Available for 7.1, he may be the second dearest backline option in the game, but with three double-figure hauls already to his name, Baines is arguably shaping up for his strongest season so far for the Toffees.

Spurs Suffer Euro Hangover

Yesterday’s shock defeat to Newcastle means that the north London outfit have taken just six points from five matches after Europa League fixtures this season – a fact that now means they sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However, whilst Cristian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli struggled against the Toon, Emmanuel Adebayor did at least pick up returns in the Tottenham attack. The Togo international scored his side’s goal in the 2-1 loss, and also received maximum bonus points, as he returned to the starting line-up after being rested against Man City in Gameweek 9. Spurs have good fixtures ahead (avl, STK, hul), but with only six goals now scored in their last seven in the league, managers are likely to have reservations over investing in their attackers right now.

Toon Fringe Players Spark Comeback

Newcastle have now recorded back-to-back wins despite the loss of their star striker Papiss Cisse to a knee injury ahead of yesterday’s clash. Instead, it was left to their squad players to pick up the points, with half-time substitute Sammy Ameobi and Ayoze Perez, in his first start of the season, grabbing the goals. Remy Cabella also emerged from the bench, and delivered the cross for Ayoze to head home Newcastle’s second, and the 7.2-priced midfielder will now be hopeful of regaining his starting berth for the first time since Gameweek 6 when Alan Pardew’s side take on Liverpool next weekend. Once again, the 4.4-priced Gabriel Obertan retained his starting position and looks increasingly integral to the Magpies’ fortunes this term.

    The case for Oscar

    - 3rd in fpl "form" or midfielders on 6.5, behind only Tadic and Sanchez
    - plays qpr next who have worst away defensive record in the league. Has good fixtures for a while, wba and Sunderland for example.
    - He does get rotated, but his game time is very predictable: the only 2 games he didn't start were everton and Man City, both away. Going back to last seasons game-by-game log (on transfermarkt) reveals that he always starts against bottom-14 sides, especially at home.
    - in his last 4 games against non-top-6 teams (LEI, SWA, AVL, pal) he scored 3, 5, 9, 13 points, respectively.
    - looking at stat tables for mids, he is highly ranked when sorting by home games, in particular for touches and shots in the box, and even beats hazard in a few key areas.
    - his price doesn't look like rising early this week which allows us to monitor him in midweek before deciding.
    - 8.3m is a good range where potential future upgrades to 9.0-10.0 players are very accessible, as are downgrades.
    - he's on freekicks
    - mourinho recently praised him enormously, and he's also a central cog for Brazil.
    - with an ownership of only 3.2%, he'll be a great differential next week and beyond.

I am going to monitor him with a view to doing Siggy>Oscar as late as possible, or when one of them looks like dropping/rising in value.

Form isn't counted by shots on target ... And in any case, he's obly 2 shots off first, hardly a KPI. Form is judged by average points in the last 4 fixtures, and he's 3rd for mids.

Oscar usually starts the easier games - of which chelsea have a few in the next few weeks

Ramires is a defensive player for mourinho so I don't see why he would rush him back from injury for these games

any tips on the below team?

    Forster (4.0m)
    PvA / Moore / Duff / Wilson / Baines
    Boyd / AdM / Siggy / Fab (C) / Chadli
Costa / Aguero (VC) / Pelle

    1 FT
    0.4m in the bank

thinking PvA to Chambers given Sunderland's upcoming fixture hell. should I instead focus on a Costa replacement?

also, Fab captain the way to go this week? either him or Aguero surely?

    Get in!

McCarthy's debut saw Rangers lose 3-2 with Hoops defenders Richard Dunne and Steven Caulker both scoring own goals.

He added: "It was a pretty crazy game and not a debut I can forget. I'm hoping the Villa game will be more straightforward, a nice 1-0 and a clean sheet will do."

Trying not to get caught up in the 'transfer of the week' hype but it's difficult. Sometimes it works out (Baines) and sometimes it doesn't (Jovetic).
Not sure Sanchez is the best option for me long term what with Walcott soon returning. Might just save for this week. Chadli has some good fixtures and is taking plenty of shots, he just needs a few more on target.

Janmaat to Chambers seems to be a good move then.
You can also save. The international break is coming, you might want 2 FT by then

Silva is showing up in all the key stats I'm looking at this week. He has gone under the radar and with Dzeko's poor performance last week, looks nailed on to start in the #10 role for the next few fixtures,at least.

On Thursday I'm heading on a 2 week football sojourn from little old Australia to the big cities of the UK.

I'm pretty happy with the fixture list.

    Saturday - Everton v Swansea @ Goodison
Sunday- ManC v ManU @ Etihad
Tuesday - Real Madrid v Liverpool @ Bernabéu
    Saturday - Liverpool v Chelsea @ Anfield
Sunday - Spurs v Stoke @ White Hart lane

Was trying to fit in Ajax v Barca but too tough to get a ticket and travel. Anyone have any other tips I could fit in?

you could quite easily get from Madrid to Amsterdam for the Ajax game. The tickets may be the problem tho - many of secondary market sites I wouldn't trust.

A couple of weeks ago I would've had a spare ticket for the game - but decided in the end to actually go! (you have to buy all 3 together for CL at Ajax)

    Non FPL HELP required

    Hi Guys

Really need some help / steer in the right direction. My sister is in Australia travelling / working with her boyfriend. He's working away a fair bit and she is stuck what to do in the evenings after the gym / friends etc. Does anyone know the Netflix equivalent that she could use? Netflix doesn't work in Australia it seems.

    Appreciate any help

Cheers GC! Does Apple TV have similar content to the likes of Netflix and Lovefilm?
I guess you can just stream movies / box sets? Do you pay to rent them? Or is it just you buy the Apple TV box and that's it?

I think she's looking for something she can watch on her Ipad. A quick google suggests 'Quickflix' ?

Going pretty well. I'm not getting rid of Sterling. I reckon he'll do well this week, at least the stats suggest he will. Looking at Siggy out and saving the other FT, but can't find a worthwhile replacement for 6.8 million 🙁

Yeah that's a tough one. I'm looking at Siggy out too but thankfully I can go up to 8.5.

Haha thanks mate! I was thinking about that but given that I won't be playing my 5th defender any time soon, that 0.2 could come in handy for other transfers! 😀

          Chadli, downing, Milner maybe?

Yep, I'm aware of that so Milner is ruled out. Downing,Chadli and even Moses I've looked at 😯

I was leaning towards Downing but the Sakho injury might effect his returns. I might waste the transfer 😯

Tbh with those options is probably not shift Siggy unless he's injured.

should I consider Lallana btw? 8.4 so in my range

I would do Moore>wisdom. Leicester have a terrible defense so even if you don't play the 5th def often you'll want someone you can count on when you do.

My team is solid I think:

              Krul Begovic
              Clyne Baines chambers naylor wisdom
              Siggy Tadic fabregas sterling Downing
              Pelle Welbeck aguero

Was eying Coleman but there's no def I need to sell as I have 3 good fixtures every week until gw12.

Siggy>Oscar is the only trade option atm with 1ft and 2.1itb. Otherwise I could save FT, by I'd rather use it as I will probably save ft next week instead

                Nice team! 😀

Yep, Siggy to Oscar sounds good. Eriksen too would be a good shout, had it not been for Spurs' recent form

Nothing to lose with the Oscar pick even if he doesn't come off (which he probably will) because Siggy won't get too many points anyways

That's wht I'm thinking too. I'll play Oscar vs qpr and wba and bench him against liverpool since Downing has AVL that week, so it sorts out my midfield fixtures

Yeah Eriksen and Chadli are my other two options but I don't trust Spurs at all, and think Oscar has better fixtures - Spurs' fixtures look better on paper than I think they really are.

                  Aguero captain most likely yes

    Some help please guys.

Thinking Di Maria -> Somebody. Forward planning, I want a frontline of Aguero, Costa, and Pelle, so that somebody has to be cheap. Like dirt cheap (5.5m cheap).

    A. Go for someone like Jedinak or Diame and have two cheapies in midfield (with Marney)
    B. Save this week and have a look next week

    Foster
Wisdom / Clyne / Baines (vc) / Bertrand
Sterling / Fábregas / Di María
    Pellè / Welbeck / Diego Costa (c)

    Krul / Sigurdsson / Marney / Coloccini

Why are people getting rid of Siggy? 😯 He is main player there, he got perfect pass, on set pieces, and after those 3 matches (in which SWA can easily score vs Everton and Arsenal) he got 2 decent home fixtures - QPR and Palace.

It seems to be because he has Arsenal and City coming up... madness IMO

I'd get hazard. Fabregas has 4 YCs, one match ban on the radar

I like (1), proven performers and both strong unlike the other the combos

Sterling and Siggy out of fashion round here though

Actually, Oscar and Mane are both fairly strong too. Not as good though IMO
