Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 9 – Monday

Charlie Austin grabs both goals and Eduardo Vargas bags an assist as QPR see off Villa 2-0 at Loftus Road. Paul Lambert’s side fail to score for the fifth successive league match as popular budget option Alan Hutton misses out with an ankle complaint.

Austin at the Double
The R’s frontman was partnered by Bobby Zamora and scored twice as Harry Redknapp’s side climbed off the bottom with a vital home win over Villa. Owned by just 0.3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers heading into last night’s encounter, Austin’s brace underlined how increasingly influential he’s becoming in recent matches – that’s three goals and an assist in his last four, compared to a single strike in the first five Gameweeks. With back-to-back showdowns against Chelsea and City in the next two, it’s fair to say few will be looking at the R’s right now, but with Newcastle, Leicester, Swansea and Burnley from Gameweek 12 onwards, the 5.7-priced Austin may yet persuade some he could be worthy of the outlay.

Vargas in the Points Once More
Having emerged from the bench to notch twice against Liverpool, the Chilean was handed a starting role on the right last night before moving up top in light of Zamora’s withdrawal. After teeing up Austin for the second, Vargas took his tally to two goals and a pair of assists in his last three appearances, but at 6.4, few will be willing to consider him over Austin, given that the latter also has spot-kick duties to bolster his appeal.

Ferdinand Benched Again
The centre-half was a sub against Liverpool last time around after sustaining a minor groin problem prior to the match. Despite his availability for last night’s encounter, Redknapp continued with Richard Dunne alongside Steven Caulker and was rewarded with a second clean sheet of the season, suggesting Ferdinand’s pitch time is in real danger, with his 4% of FPL owners looking for a way out.

Another Blank for Villa
The signs look ominous for the Midlands outfit after they failed to score for the fifth successive Gameweek last night. To some extent, it was understandable that Paul Lambert’s side had drawn blanks against Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Everton but hopes were high of a turnaround at Loftus Road, given that their hosts had conceded at least twice in six of the previous seven. Christian Benteke and co. once again failed to impress, and with Spurs, West Ham and Southampton in the next three, Fantasy faith in Villa’s main men is unlikely to pick up anytime soon.

Hutton Worry for Lambert
An ever-present over the first eight Gameweeks for Villa, the right-back was sidelined due to an ankle problem last night. Hutton is the most popular cut-price defender in the FPL game – now up to 4.2, he currently sits in over 13% of sides after serving up three clean sheets in the first four. Having conceded 13 goals and earned his owners four points in the subsequent five, a possible spell on the sidelines could be the ideal opportunity to part company with the Scot as Villa’s toils continue.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Danny Welbeck

Now I own him, I can't help wonder if I've been duped in to thinking he is a better FPL prospect than he actually is.

    Pros:
-Seems to be first choice striker at one of the so called big 6
    -Is only £7.2m
-Scored a hattrick recently demonstrating his potential goal scoring

    Cons:
Has only scored 2 times in the league this year
He has never netted more than 9 goals in any season
His place won't be as secure on Giroud's return
There are many other players who seemingly look much better value in comparison:

    Welbeck: £7.4m (570 minutes) - 2 goals/1 assist
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Cisse: £5.9m (241 minutes) - 4 goals/ 1 assist
    Sakho £5.7m (557 minutes) 5 goals/ 2 assists
    Vardy £4.9m (401 minutes) - 1 goal/ 5 assists
    Austin £5.7m (666 minutes) - 4 goals/ 1 assist
    Jelavic £6m (610 minutes) - 4 goals
    Campbell £5.2m (652 minutes) - 3 goals

Not even mentioning Naismith (£5.1,), Ulloa (£5.6m) and Berahino (£5.9m) who have also scored more (but played many more minutes)

Have I been distracted by the fact that he's a cheap striker at a top club? Is it time to stop ignoring the cheaper and unfashionable club players? Especially as a cool few million could help upgrade other areas of the team.

i have welbs , no kun and am 174th somehow lol ( i am currently pelle , welbs , costa )

i will keep welbs this week but will reassess if he doesn't rack up some decent points in an easy game

going cheaper would be a useful switch for me as it might open up the option to get aguero in

I think you'll regret losing him to be honest... I might end up being wrong but your pros are what I'm looking at.. Nailed on first choice striker in a team that will continue to score quite a few goals and win games who have good fixtures at only 7.2...

Never netted more than 9 goals a season doesn't matter when he's been at a club he isn't starting regularly and often put out of position.

I think most of the other strikers you mentioned will drop off and not keep up their scoring personally.

Like most owners, Burnley is his last game in my team. Not even a hattrick will convince me to keep him.

I do think we may be letting the fact he plays for Arsenal overly influence but I still think he's a good pick for two reasons:

      1. He has more assist threat than those budget options because he does play more quality players at Arsenal. He has 11 key passes to Sakho/Berahino's 5. He's also played almost 300 fewer minutes than Berahino. Vardy's the only striker on who comes close in terms of creativity and that mostly came from the one giant game against United.

      2. Yes, he hasn't produced as much as one would like but check out his fixtures since coming to Arsenal:
MCI: Blanked, but had chances and Man City is a tough fixture.
@ Villa: Goal and assist, great return.
Spurs: This is one you'd like him to score in, but Spurs are still probably a top 6 side, not a walkover.
@ Chelsea: Probably the toughest fixture for an attacker possible.
Hull: Grabbed a goal, can't really complain.
@ Sunderland: The first "easy" fixture that he blanked in.

And really, how many goals do you expect a 7 million striker to score against City and Chelsea? His stats are good enough to convince me he's a very solid option, with more upside than the budget strikers due to his duel goal and assist threat.

Tomkins has been injured. Despite Collins playing well, Tonks has been first choice. I'd hold fire and assess the situation. Changing to Reid is a sidways move. Cresswell (albeit being a bit more expensive) is the one to capture. As is Ward over at Palace according to Demi. Stats perhaps suggest otherwise.

Was looking at Cresswell. Seems to be quietly ticking along with assists every other match but 5.4 is a lot for a West Ham defender

Any news on when Tomkins is back? I have .4 in the bank but didn't want to use it all on upgrading him. Need to do Siggy to Mane too

No worries. I know what you're saying with regards to DDG and utd CSs are at a premium. But they played well on sun and have 3 nice home games in the next 5 so unless you urgently need the funds, don't think you necessarily need to prioritise that move.

P.S - If you're getting walcott in a couple weeks, maybe go for hazard now? Apart from liverpool away (which arguably isn't a tough fixture either), chelsea fixtures are great.

Caz or Ox are both not nailed on so you may struggle put out a solid mid 4

Yes, but it is easier to play 3-4-3 than 3-5-2

Surely that's a 'waste' of your FWD position? With all the budget-friendly options delivering, that seems like a bad move. I guess you could have a killer midfield 5 ---is that the plan?

      1. Just A Hat
        • 14 Years

yeah that is what I was thinking

        Wellbeck -> Zamora
        Tadic -> Sanchez

        or

        Sterling -> Boyd
        Tadic -> Sanchez

seems silly getting rid of Wellbeck for Burnley at HOME though...Hhmmmm - this week is too hard!

Logical reasoning. Sub appearance next two then international break for one final fitness push. GW12 is utd at home so exactly the sort of game you need walcott for.

    Sterling or Silva to Hazard?

Have Kun. Why no love for Silva? He should be playing in the hole now behind Aguero. Fixtures looking good as well 🙂

As far as am concerned, with their recent poor defensive showings, Kun is the only City asset worth trying to get into your team.

With regards to Silver, Pelle is too married to playing 2 strikers. I expect one of Dzeko or Jovetic to partner Kun for most games. Silva playing behind Kun won't happen enough times to justify bringing him IMO.

----Cue a 5 game run of goals and assists for Silva

lol yes, I wanted to take Silva out last gameweek but then he scored and got 3 BPS! 😀 Thats why this is a hard decision.

So seems like Sterling to Hazard is the right choice

So I am leaning towards Sanchez + Sakho over Aguero and Downing as my next transfers for the following reasons:

    1) I believe they will get me more points (debatable)
    2) It gives me 2.1 extra itb which will be handy if: a) Reports that Costa will have surgery are true. I would easily get Aguero for him. b) I want to replace Forster/Alderwereild when the fixtures turn bad in 3 GWs. I can get 1 or more of City and Chelsea defensive coverage (best CS potential from GW 12-19).

Well Sakho isn't playing for probably 2 GWs so really you're saying Sanchez will get you more points than Aguero + Downing which imo is wrong!

    SDavis at 4.8...any appeal?
as he is nailed in that midfield along w/ Schneiderlin..last yr he had some good streaks, and w/ team in form could deliver ...
was thinking of him ahead of Obert/Boyd 4.4 (team just cant score) and Jedi 5.0 (SDavis better player altho jedi on pens)
