Newcastle have worries in defence as they head to Burnley. Arsenal have concerns at left-back for the home clash against Southampton, who are set to be without Morgan Schneiderlin. Enner Valencia returns as the Hammers head to the Hawthorns, Yun Suk-Young could be poised to recover for QPR, whilst Stoke have a midfield headache ahead of their visit to Old Trafford.

Wojciech Szczesny remains sidelined for Arsenal’s home clash with Southampton. Arsene Wenger has also confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal are all doubts, though hopes to have one of the latter two available to feature at left-back.

Morgan Schneiderlin has been ruled out of the Emirates clash and is set for adductor scans. Jack Cork is back for Ronald Koeman’s side, though, after recovering from a weekend illness.

Mark Noble is a doubt for the Hammers’ trip to West Brom later this evening after suffering a recurrence of a calf complaint during the weekend win over Newcastle. Enner Valencia is back in the squad after missing the last two matches though injury, though fellow forward Diafra Sakho is still unavailable. Winston Reid returns after serving a one-match suspension.

Gary Monk has confirmed that Swansea have no new injury worries ahead of the home clash against QPR. Nathan Dyer is set to return to the squad after missing out at the weekend.

Steve Sidwell (knee) could be out for up to six weeks for the Potters, whilst Glenn Whelan is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks with a calf complaint. Phil Bardsley is back in training after recovering from the illness that forced him to miss the weekend trip to Liverpool.

Newcastle are facing a mounting injury crisis in defence for the trip to Burnley. Alan Pardew is already without Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini and is now sweating over the fitness of Mike Williamson, Massadio Haidara and Daryl Janmaat. With Moussa Sissoko and Jack Colback serving one-match suspensions, the Magpie manager has revealed he has included three youth team players in his matchday squad.

Sebastien Pocognoli is a doubt for West Brom after sustaining a dead leg at the weekend. James Morrison is back in training and will be assessed for the visit of West Ham.

Leicester’s David Nugent is set to be assessed after picking up an ankle problem at the weekend. The Foxes boss Nigel Pearson has also confirmed that Dean Hammond is back in training but tonight’s match is set to come too soon.

Harry Redknapp remains optimistic that Yun Suk-Young will recover from the knee knock that forced him off in the weekend win over Leicester. Bobby Zamora could also be in contention – he requires a late fitness test after missing out on Saturday with a back problem.

Mamadou Sakho is back in training for Liverpool but this evening’s trip to Leicester will come too soon. Mario Balotelli is sidelined once again with a groin injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

Just read the hot topic by Dino on fifth midfielders. I thought he got an unnecessarily hard time.

I had been on Boyd at the start this season but I changed a few weeks back to a better 5th mid in Downing.

My reasoning was that I could cover any injuries and also have a rotation of Chadli, Downing, Austin (sometimes maybe Siggy) and hopefully avoid a tough fixture for one of my attacking players.

Dino got panned because his money on a more expensive option was 'wasted'. I prefer to look at it another way, for everyone with Boyd benched every single week, you have 4.4 doing nothing in your squad permanently. How many with Boyd are having to play both Boyd and either Chadli or Eriksen this midweek? High probability of 4 points from two players.

If there is a good option at 4.5 like Barkley last season then I'd go for it, but Boyd and the rest at the price this season are just 2 point magnets.

It should concern you. No way hell get that many penalties and there's always a chance hell get one when you've benched him. Sounds frustrating to me!

His free kick was incredible though. If he puts another one like that in he'd be a bit tempting

      11 years, 1 month ago

Rotating Austin Siggy and Downing is madness imo. They could all get points in any game the way they've been playing every season. Boyd instead of Downing could have you able to get someone like Baines in potentially.

      Just my two cents 🙂

I can see where you're coming from with the rotation of 5-7m mid/fwds argument. However, I think when we come to deciding one our budget midfielders I think its fair to say that the player/club form is taken A LOT more into account compared to when we choose our premium mid/fwd players. Given this, I must ask the question of whether it is wise to bench an in form mid/fwd? Personally, I'd say the answer is no, therefore the rotation argument is invalid.

Also with regards to a 4.4 mid only getting 2s every week, I don't think this is an argument against employing a 4.4 mid. If you normally start with 3 defenders, I'd say the chances are that one of your other 2 reserve defenders will have a semi-decent fixture. For me defenders definitely offer better value - you only have to consider Chambers this year. What midfielders are going to offer similar returns for a similar price?

Still I think, Dino's discussion is good. Of course people will agree and disagreee with the article's conclusions - and this is why I like fantasy football! If everyone arrived at the same conclusion then everyone would have the same team!

      1. Pie-o-My
        • 12 Years

That brings in form v fixtures. Chadli (ok up till his injury) was in good form, Eriksen is in good form. I don't think that will continue away to Chelsea tomorrow. Likelihood is they will get 2 pts. That's the thing I'm looking to avoid. If I had Boyd this week I could have been left with playing Boyd and a spurs mid along with benching Costa. Many will have to do that. I just prefer to have more options to try and play both fixtures and form. Sometimes it goes wrong, just like rotating keepers but thats just how it is. I am a firm believer that 4.4 or Boyd or whoever else is 4.4 wasted in a squad doing nothing.

See I think this is where one's own approach to their team dictates whether playing a 4.4 mid is valid or not. For me, if I have injuries I will either play my other defenders or sub the injured player out (this is exemplified by my 21 transfers so far).

If you like certainty and flexibility without having to make transfers then employing a 4.4 mid is clearly not a good idea. Personally, I see injuries as an opportunity to move onto the next in-form player. So far this has worked well for me as I'm currently ranked 9k - however it is difficult to say whether my rank is attributed at all to my decision to play a 4.4 mid.

Who is a better pick Bolasie or Jedinak? Too much love for Bolasie in here, Is there any convincing reason other than more flair that doesn't translate to fpl points? Jedinak is cheaper, scores more and is on penalties and has returned more points so far.

I've made the decision to keep Costa so have a slight problem.....

Need 2 to play, so who to bench?

    S. Taylor (bur)
    Boyd (NEW)
    Kane (che)

    I'd appreciate all your thoughts!

    A) Costa -> Rooney
    B) Costa -> Austin, Bertrand -> Baines (-4 hit)

Bearing in mind I already have Clyne and Bony. Selling Costa is of no loss to me as I bought him back late. A) allows me to buy back Costa easily, but RMT is saying B) will get me more points over next few weeks. Which should I do?

I am going with Siggy (C) over Rooney, Aguero and Hazard.

Blanked at home only once vs Soton, QPR's defence is bad, he could score few goals last match and I think it should come back to him in this game. 🙂

The other thing I'm considering, is how tired Sunderland are, after a tough game against the Champions elect?

    Could City take advantage?

Not something I thought of but I agree. If city score early, that'll be it too.

This is City's third game in a week and have travelled to Southampton at the weekend. Their trip up to Sunderland a few days later (who have had two home fixtures) would surely see City as the more tired team?

Not sure about that - they had the ball a lot of the game whereas sunderland were chasing around like dogs. Plus two aging CBs. Think they'll be more tired.

Well applying my so far catastrophic methods of selecting a captain:

Aguero I would be concerned that Sunderland will attempt to park the bus again. We've just seen them do it yet a number of folks for some reason don't think it'll stop Aguero (despite stopping Fabs, Costa and Hazard). But then, it is Kun.

Hazard is streaky bacon, I am more and more coming to realise the never bench, never captain rule may apply. Or at least that's for me, I can never predict his returns.

I think Sanchez could be good, Soton without Schneiderlin and they've capitulated in every big game they've played this season. Downside is Olivier Buckaroo in the way.

Toure is similar to Aguero, if I was to captain a City player it'd be Kun.

Siggy is very appealing, has only blanked once at home and was shooting like a mad man at the weekend. That said, his shooting was poor.

Charlie is in fine form, Swansea are a tough enough nut to crack though. He's an option, I'd just be reluctant.

Baines really is the captaincy choice that I think could earn the biggest points with the biggest risk. Perhaps look at how many penalties Hull have given away this season? I don't know the figure myself.

So I have completely failed to answer your question 😆

I think Siggy stands out, Baines if you want a real punt (at the very least, a CS should be on the cards which really isn't too shabby).

Oh and keep Sanchez in mind, if for some reason we get any very early info on Arsenal he cut shoot to the top of the list.

Sans Morgan would be a huge contributing factor. I would love to see (it is the most unlikely of possibilities) what Wenger is planning for up top as well. Sanchez struggled with Giroud I thought, in fact he struggled to nail down a position he was comfortable with!

All the latest news indicates that Schneiderlin is definitely out

"He now needs a scan on his right adductor, with manager Koeman admitting he does not know the severity of the problem.

"Morgan's not ready for Wednesday because he needs a scan on his adductor, in his right leg, to find out exactly what happened," he said.

"It's too soon to know whether it's serious. It's not too soon to say he can't play on Wednesday, but how long he will be out I don't know."

Absolutely. I can see it now, I've been clever and have went Roo (C) because Sunderland are City's bogey team, will park the bus etc.

                    Rooney 90 minutes + a YC = 1 point.

Aguero 90 minutes + 6 goals and 3 assists = A miserable Christmas for Somalion.

                    😉
