As always, there are plenty of topics on our pre-Gameweek radar as we start to prepare for another round of fixtures. Nacer Chadli’s pitch time, Chelsea’s away displays, the budget showdown at Loftus Road and Christian Benteke’s showing against Leicester are all amongst our Thursday dinnertime menu.

Chadli’s minutes against the Eagles…
After missing the Gameweek 12 trip to Hull through injury, the Belgian has warmed the Spurs bench for each of the last two as Mauricio Pochettino places his faith in Aaron Lennon instead. Having scored six times in the first 11 outings, Chadli’s goal threat has been key for the north London outfit and Fantasy managers alike but his appeal looks in danger right now. Having earned just over half an hour off the bench at the Bridge last night, he’ll be pushing for a start once again but with Christian Eriksen offering an in-form alternative in the Tottenham midfield, another place amongst the subs for Chadli will surely be the final straw for his 15% owners.

Hazard and Costa on their travels…
With their top scorer suspended in midweek, the Chelsea winger netted for the fourth successive home match and finally forced him way past Cesc Fabregas in the Fantasy standings. Hazard is yet to convince away from the Bridge, though, whilst Costa has cut a frustrating figure on his travels, earning yellow cards in all five of his road trips. With City breathing down their necks and racking up the goals, the duo will need to step up their displays against a Newcastle side that have conceded just three times in the last seven. Given that Chelsea now have four away trips in the next six, Jose Mourinho needs his big–hitters to produce with more regularity outside of west London.

The Austin and Ings shootout…
The budget pair carry excellent form into their weekend head-to-head at Loftus Road. Austin has five goals and an assist in his last six, whilst Ings has netted four times and served up an assist over the same period – both have offered returns well beyond our expectations and with their defences looking vulnerable, they have the chance to cement their place as our cut-price forward of choice over the festive period.

Liverpool’s recovery as the Black Cats pay visit…
Brendan Rodgers’ side have registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season and are hinting at a return to form as Sunderland arrive at Anfield. The return of Lucas to the starting XI seems to have stabilised the Reds and saw Steven Gerrard, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson all get amongst the goals in midweek. Aside from their midweek loss to City, Gus Poyet’s troops have looked tough to break down but another win for the home side may yet bring their assets back onto our radars.

Arsenal’s defence at the Britannia…
With three clean sheets in all competitions, the Gunners are finally hinting at a return to the form of 2013/14. Arsenal racked up 17 shut-outs last time around – second only to Chelsea – and the return of Laurent Koscielny seems to have steadied the ship in recent matches, suggesting they could be worthy of consideration again. Mathieu Debuchy’s imminent return could spell bad news for Calum Chambers owners and, at just 5.2, the Frenchman may well play his way into our plans once fully fit.

Benteke against the Foxes…
A first goal of the season at Palace on Tuesday could just be the spark the Villa forward needs. Up against a Leicester side with just one clean sheet in ten and devoid of suspended skipper Wes Morgan, Benteke is handed the perfect opportunity to notch again this weekend. With so much time spent on the sidelines, it’s easy to forget he scored 29 goals in the previous two seasons – another strike at the weekend could see him shake up our options in the mid-price bracket, with some excellent fixtures to follow.

Downing’s head-to-head with Siggy…
The duo sit second and fourth for chances created amongst midfielders this season and will be key to unlocking their opponents’ defences as the Hammers welcome Swansea to Upton Park. Owners will be looking for an improvement from the popular pair – Downing has just two home assists to his name, whilst Sigurdsson has blanked in every away match since Gameweek 1. Bearing in mind the Hammers have conceded just once in their last four at home, Siggy looks to have the tougher task here, whilst up front, Wilfried Bony’s form on the road is also a concern – he’s managed just three shots on target away from home all season.

Berahino’s form at the KC…
The West Brom youngster was a victim of his own versatility in midweek. Shifted to the left flank to accommodate Victor Anichebe up front, Berahino failed to score for the fifth successive Gameweek and with the likes of Ings and Austin offering in-form options in the same price-range, the 18%-owned Baggies forward could be on his last chance for many. A trip to Hull still offers hope of a turnaround but another blank or start on the wing should spark the exodus.

United’s assets at St Mary’s…
Slowly but surely, Louis van Gaal’s side are starting to click. Despite the loss of Angel di Maria and Wayne Rooney in midweek, United were still too strong for Stoke and racked up a fourth successive win ahead of their trip to Southampton. Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata grabbed a goal apiece in midweek, whilst Andre Herrera provided a second assist in a row – question is, can they really offer a viable alternative to the stricken Di Maria in the Red Devils’ midfield, though? The Saints’ fixture list is bad enough but with injuries also afflicting their prospects, Ronald Koeman’s side look up against it on Monday night and United could well take advantage.

Mignolet dropping.. even though playing Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday irrespective of the fact they lost 8 nil to Southampton.

Wasn't on my list of pre-season eventualities.

Just read the hot topic on what people actually think is the benefit of being a member and most people responding with the stats and comparison tables, etc.

But in my opinion fantasy football is a simple game, and I personally think that looking through the more in-depth statistics just makes things unnecessarily complicated.... For example these statistics may fool you into thinking an average player is worth having in your team just because he has a lot of shots and is surely due some points, when you could just keep it simple and choose a player that actually has been picking up points.

The only thing you really need to do well in fantasy football is an understanding of the fixtures, the teams that are most likely to score lots of goals, and which players in those teams are most likely to score the goals or have a big points impact on the game.

I know I am probably sounding like I think I am great at this game etc etc but I just generally think people over complicate things so much when it isn't necessary.

I find that stats simplify things. Shut out all the noise and media hype, deal with just the facts. If they're misinterpreted, they're useless, but if you read them right, there's no reason why having more information wouldn't be better than having less.

After the members analyze the stats they do end up coming here to discuss their findings so closely monitoring the comments and asking for opinions on here can more effective than actually being a member.

I rarely watch much football - you dont actually need to for FPL, the things that are important to being good at this game have almost nothing to do with watching football, its all about information and decision making based on that information.

I agree to a certain extent. Stats can be useful when making tough decisions, but I don't think I've ever brought in a player based on stats and the fact he is 'due' based on the numbers.

Whereas I believe the stats say that Costa is a poor pick for the money and saw that Hazard's stats and performances have been steadily increasing week on week and got him in a couple of weeks back. 🙂

I don't think stats complicate things, people that use them sometimes do.

Having more information is always better than less information, but you need to be clear in how you use it. Don't 'overfit' to the stats data, but use it as a supplement to the points information.

I'm a non member, but if I was going to get into this really really seriously then I would join, because knowing that someone is getting points, doesn't indicate the potential to beat the crowd and take a punt on someone based on something like shots on goal or crosses.

Stats are helpful, a fool who says otherwise.. I get all the stats for free but i don't get all the information they mean to give.. Thats why you need membership because they(member's only article writers) show you the stats AND help you identify trends and what not, the things you cannot read on your own.. Its complicated to understand the effect of one particular stat on another stat.. So for people like you its easy to say they are not helpful, like the fox who could not get to the grapes.. Someone recently wrote on these pages that he has a very simple plan and uses it successfully every year. (I think he's at around 4K this year). If I understood correctly, wherever possible he buys players who are towards the top of their respective points totals lists, always choosing the higher scoring of potential imports. That was his primary criterion. Sounds simple enough.

I've managed alright so far without membership. would having access to stats help me finish any higher? It's probably more about the interpretation rather than the actual stats. I just go by results so am probably a bit behind/with the curve. Some of the analysis on this site is good and really gets you thinking. If I had the time i could maybe do that as i look through the stats...

Injury update on Rooney, Di Maria and Blind

      Story updated 04/12/14

Louis van Gaal is likely to give an update on Wayne Rooney's knee injury during his pre-match press conference on Friday (5 December) after revealing the Manchester United captain was going to undergo a scan.

The in-form Reds striker limped out of Saturday’s victory over Hull City and was subsequently not included in the squad for Tuesday's 2-1 win against Stoke City. However, the manager is confident that Rooney will hopefully make a swift return to action.

“It’s his knee, but we have to wait for tomorrow to say anything about him because you never know with a knee,” said van Gaal when addressing the media after the Stoke game.

“My opinion is it is not so heavy (serious) but I am not a doctor. So we have to wait for the scan then we will know more. But I hope it is not so heavy.”

Van Gaal also discussed the fitness of Angel Di Maria, who suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of Saturday’s match. “Di Maria is not so heavy but of course he shall not play against Southampton,” the boss said. “But you never know.”

To finish his injury round-up, the Dutchman provided a positive update on Daley Blind and revealed his compatriot could return from a knee injury towards the end of this month.

“It’s not so heavy as I have already said,” van Gaal reported. As for a possible return date, the manager suggested: “Not next week, I don’t know… Christmas maybe – maybe Christmas. At the end of December maybe we see light at the end of the tunnel.”

What is a nice trade you have planned up your sleeve for a coming Gameweek?
For me: Guzan to Hart GW17 and Downing to Barkley GW18

For me they haven't anyway. I always plan ahead. But there is always an Injury/problem or a new bandwagon to join.

Have exact money to do Clyne to Azlipacueta so let's hope he doesn't rise! I'm guessing he will though. Worth a hit?

I don't think Azpi will rise again before Sat morning. Do the first transfer today and check again tomorrow to see if Azpi close to a rise.

    Guzan (McCarthy)
    Baines Yun Bartley (Wisdom Dummett)
    Fab Haz Sanchez Siggy (Boyd)
    Aguero Costa Austin

1ft 0.2m in bank..Thinking save FT this when and then next week:

    A) Fab + Baines -> Azpi + ADM/Yaya/Silva
    B) Fab + Dummett -> Azpi + 7.7m mid (can't afford Erksen)

    cheers

What are the chances that Clyne will rise before Azpi? Not necessarily before this GW, just in general. I'm aware that FPLStats have Azpi on 61,000 and Clyne on 14,000.
