As managers start to utilise the depth of their first-team squads and introduce fresh legs into starting line-ups, the number of injuries was kept fairly minimal over the weekend. Unfortunately for City and Fantasy managers alike, a certain Argentine’s knee problems casts a shadow over plans for the festive period.

Aston Villa
Paul Lambert is sweating over the fitness of midfielder Ashley Westwood, who was stretchered off with a knee injury in yesterday’s win over Leicester. The Villa boss also has concerns over Tom Cleverley, who was replaced midway through the second half with a foot problem.

Leicester
Ritchie De Laet missed the trip to Villa Park due to illness, allowing Danny Simpson his first start at right-back for the Foxes. Top scorer Leonardo Ulloa notched his first goal since Gameweek 5 yesterday but was forced off at the break during the 2-1 loss at Villa due to a calf problem. After the match, Nigel Pearson explained his decision to withdraw the Argentine:

“In the challenge prior to half time he got a heavy knock with a follow-through and he didn’t fully recover from that, so we felt it was still important to still have the work rate out there with Nugent coming on for him.”

Man City
As Fantasy managers know only too well, Sergio Aguero was forced off early against Everton on Saturday evening due to a knee injury. Whilst Manuel Pellegrini has yet to make a statement since Saturday’s post-match briefing, unconfirmed reports last night suggest Aguero could miss the next month – or at least five Gameweeks, to you and me.

Initial reports suggested Fernandinho missed out through injury but further updates indicate the midfielder was simply rested from the squad to face Everton.

Newcastle
Rob Elliott has been ruled out until January with a thigh injury sustained in the weekend win over Chelsea. With first-choice stopper Tim Krul also sidelined, Jak Alnwick is poised for a stint between the sticks. Alan Pardew – who is without the suspended Steven Taylor – has also revealed skipper Fabricio Coloccini is, once again, an early injury doubt. Mehdi Abeid missed out with a recurrence of a toe problem against the Blues.

Stoke
Marc Wilson and Marko Arnautovic missed the Potters’ 3-2 home win over Arsenal with hamstring and groin problems respectively. Marc Muniesa was forced off after sustaining a hamstring injury, with post-match reports suggesting he could be sidelined for 10 days.

West Brom
Georgios Samaras missed the Baggies trip to Hull on Saturday due to illness, the club’s official Twitter feed has confirmed. After the match, Alan Irvine explained the reasons behind a couple of second-half withdrawals:

“I wanted to be as positive as possible with my changes but at half-time we had Stephane Sessegnon struggling with a tight calf and Victor Anichebe still troubled by his groin problem.”

West Ham
Carl Jenkinson is an early weekend worry for the Hammers. After serving up his second assist of the season, the right-back was forced off with a hamstring injury during the 3-1 win over Swansea.

Is Sakho and Downing Westham overkill? They are scoring a lot tbh.

Sunderland are crap despite some solid displays recently. Against a really good attacking team, they will get beat easily. The 4-1 thrashing by City was not that far back.

    A bit of myth-busting.....

    1. Costa is a bad option because he'll be rested over Christmas.

    • Chelsea play Friday-Sunday-Thursday (WHM/sot/tot) and three tricky games at that. This is the same as Sunday-Tuesday-Saturday (which Chelsea don't play, but it doesn't sound so bad like that) and only one day different to Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday.
    • Costa cant play three games in a week? Wrong. He did.. WBA/schalke/sun, which included travelling unlike over Christmas.
    • Mourinho has also stated Costa is over his fitness worries.
    • Plus, it's likely Costa will have only played 6 games between 9 Nov and the first of these fixtures. Well rested, indeed.

    2. Yaya is a bad option because he's on 4 yellow cards.

    • Before his 4th yellow, Yaya had gone 9 Premier League games without a booking.
    • Those 4 bookings have come in hard fixtures (LIV/CHE/EVE and the 1-0 defeat to STO).
    • Even if Yaya received his 5th booking, you have a simple switch to Silva - who should then be fit - and can be used as a pre-WC punt.

Rant over. Just fed up of seeing both arguments quoted as fact. Costa may get rested, Yaya may get a 5th booking BUT it shouldn’t be treated as fact IMO. 😀

Mourinho has said he's over his problems. He's had a long, long break. It's possible, but it's like the Yaya yellows... you could be waiting ages for that to happen.

#2 is a specious argument. It is a fact that he has 4 YCs. And it's also a fact that he will get suspended if he gets a fifth yellow card. No one is stating it's a fact that he will get a fifth YC. Folks are just leery of acquiring someone who could be suspended for one infraction.

        • 12 Years
        11 years, 8 days ago

But my point is you could have him for 10 games without a yellow. It should make the difference between getting and not getting, yet it's quoted a lot.

There are only has 4 more GWs before the number of yellows required for a suspension rises from 5 to 10.

But he still runs a bigger risk of being suspended in the next 4 GWs than alternatives who are currently on less than 4 yellows, and that might cause problems if other players in our squads get rotated in the busy December period.

Silva is always my Achilles heel. Love him as a player, but just doesn't not produce th returns.

Yaya trolled me last year. This year I fancy having him...

    Is this madness??

    Aguero, Marney and Ricky Lambert
    To
    Dzeko, Yaya and Agbonlahor

Would mean playing a 5 man midfield at least until January.

    Guzan (Elliot)
    Azpilicueta - Yun - Hutton (Moore, N.Taylor)
Hazard - Sanchez - Downing - Siggy (Boyd)
    Aguero - Costa - Austin

Who should I change Aguero too? Got 1 FT and 0.2mill, could take a -4 to Upgrade elsewhere?

Hi all! If you were to replace Aguero with a striker who's NOT on this list, who would you choose and why?

-Costa, Austin, Rooney, Bony, Sakho, Lukaku, Lambert-

(I'm in a small, Draft Style league, and I'm transferring out Aguero. These seven are taken, at least until New Year's when we all re-draft.)

RvP would be an obvious choice if he isn't taken.

It's a pretty cool system we've been perfecting over the last few seasons. It kinda helps it stay interesting to have everyone re-pick players once we see how the season's going. Thanks for the input.

With captaincy choices is it better to go safe rather than sorry?

Like for this week for example, IMO costa is a safer choice than Eriksen, due to the fact that I think more of the top 10k will go for him before Eriksen, however the benefits of a good Eriksen haul if I make him (c) will be massive.

    Thoughts?
