Gameweek 17 rolls on via a stormy Tyne-Wear derby clash and the meeting of two top four hopefuls at Anfield.

Events begin at St James Park where Newcastle will attempt to halt rather catastrophic blip in their revival: they’ve lost their last two outings, shipping eight goals in the process. Local rivals Sunderland are unlikely to provide sympathetic opponents; the Black Cats have lost just once in their last seven league matches.

Alan Pardew’s men welcome back Sammy Ameobi and Cheick Tiote following recent knocks, while both Daryl Janmaat and Steven Taylor also return to bolster the back four, although with 17-year-old Jak Alnwick continuing in goal, the fragility in defence could well remain.

Gus Poyet’s men will look to exploit such a weakness as the Uruguayan makes just one change to his Sunderland starting XI, recalling striker Steven Fletcher with the much-maligned Jozy Altidore dropping to the bench. The visitors have been forced into a late change, however, with Anthony Réveillère sustaining an injury in the warm-up; Liverpool loanee Sebastián Coates is drafted into the back four.

The day’s action continues shortly after the whistle in the north east, as we drop in at Anfield to check on the progress of both Liverpool and Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez and a cast of mid-price differentials are on show, as the likes of Raheem Sterling and Olivier Giroud audition in a bid to boost their pre-Christmas Fantasy stock.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So naive from us again, for all his flaws Tiote would have fouled Johnson had he still been on.

And double CS loss to boot, maybe I should start buying players that play Newcastle as a consolation!

Don't think either side "deserved" to win, a draw would have been a fair result.

We were on top for large parts of the game but never really looked like scoring.

I looked at all the average positions of liverpool to come up with historical formations and Liverpool have fielded nothing like this. Never have had three at the back in league this season. Never played a true single striker alone. Is Liverpool playing a 3-6-1 formation? Liverpool have had similar problems to Arsenal in getting caught high and scored on during a break. Seems almost self-destructive in theory. Especially when you have guys like Jones, Sakho and Markovic who haven't had much game time.

Tbf we've played some of our best football since the change. Just needs a dedicated DM in the lineup. Although the upturn in form may be due to Sterling being the no 9.

Don't understand either....could be causing Gerrard so many problems if Wenger placed him in a central position..

Yeah, but he so explosive and can score at like any random moment. Let's see how this plays out. Us yaya captainers were buggin big time, and then in 85 minute, everything changed with one rush. Toure was having a better match, but still, results are the ultimate criterion.
