Scout Notes – Gameweek 17 – Monday

Cesc Fabregas grabs a goal and assist as Chelsea ease past Stoke 2-0. John Terry also finds the net as the Blues earn a fifth clean sheet in six, though Eden Hazard gives Fantasy managers cause for concern after limping off in the dying minutes at the Britannia.

Consistent Cesc Delivers Again

Sold by over 356,000 FPL managers due to his one-match suspension against Hull the previous weekend, the Blues playmaker returned to form with a vengeance last night. Handed the role in “the hole” as Oscar dropped to the Blues’ bench, Fabregas bagged a goal and assist to steer Chelsea three points clear of City at the summit and take his personal tally to two goals and 12 assists in the first 17 Gameweeks. Now up to third in the FPL midfield standings, the Spaniard has earned his owners points in 11 of his 16 appearances for the Blues – Eden Hazard has managed a goal or assist in nine of his 17 league outings by comparison.

Hazard Concern for Blues

Forced off with an ankle problem towards the end of last night’s encounter, the Belgian had been the victim of numerous clumsy challenges by the home side throughout. Hazard’s assist in last night’s win – just his third away from home all season – ensured he remains ahead of Fabregas in the FPL standings and kept his form ticking over ahead of Friday’s home clash with West Ham. Bearing in mind he has scored in each of his last five at the Bridge, any update on the Belgian’s fitness will be eagerly awaited by Fantasy managers. Encouragingly, Mourinho failed to mention any problem during his post-match briefing, whilst Hazard is reported to have replied “don’t worry” when quizzed by reporters on his weekend availability.

Blues Backline in the Points

Last night’s victory means Mourinho’s side have now served up five clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks. The Blues boss reverted to his first-choice back-four as Filipe Luis dropped to the bench but despite his tinkering, Chelsea head into the upcoming trio of quick-fire Gameweeks in their most resilient form of the season – they’re up to eight shut-outs for the campaign now, joint-top with Southampton.

John Terry grabbed his first goal of the season to send his side three points clear of City. The Chelsea skipper headed into last night’s match as the only member of Jose Mourinho’s regular back-four without a goal or assist to his name but needed just two minutes to rectify that record after nodding home the winner. Priced at just 6.3 to Branislav Ivanovic’s 7.2, Terry now sits just five points behind the Serbian – an ownership of just 7% in the FPL game highlights his differential potential.

Costa’s Toils Continue

It’s a single goal in four appearances for the Blues popular striker, whose two-point return proved a bitter disappointment for his 59% of FPL owners. From Gameweek 8 onwards, Costa has managed just 24 points – granted, he missed three of those matches through injury and suspension but his inability to produce the goods is having a significant effect across the Fantasy games, with many managers captaining him on a regular basis. Costa was drafted in by over 360,000 in the previous three Gameweeks as a result of Sergio Aguero’s injury but many may be thinking twice after a weekend that saw a number of budget and mid-price forwards continue their fine form.

Mikel played instead of Oscar, presumably to add a bit of steel to the midfield.

When Oscar comes back in, which he is very likely too, Fabregas will drop deeper again.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Counting the Costa

Is it time to admit that Costa is no longer a good FPL pick. Yes he will score goals, but last night showed that in terms of FPL scoring he remains in the shadow of Fabregas, Hazard as well as defenders. Even if he'd have scored last night he would not have got enough BPS for a bonus point.

Last night his BPS was -2. The BPS clearly doesn't reward his play. Plus he can't assist.

Are the days of captaining Costa over?

Are the days of even owning Costa over?

Chelsea have scored more than 2 goals only once in the last 11 weeks, compared to 4 times in the first 6 weeks. They seem to shut up shop once they get 2 in front nowadays.

As soon as the other big hitting strikers return (Kun, Stturridge, RVP, Falcao) he's gone. Even if they don't return, I'm shifting to 3-5-2 with Hazard and Fabregas

If he played for another team he would be a decent option in the absence of kun as he will continue to score lots of goals.

But the chelsea effect is killing him. Hazard is a better captain option at home. Generally their are alternative captains from other teams to cover chelsea away fixtures.

And fab and co just hoovering up any chance of baps so where as many strikers are getting close to 6 pts per goal he is stuck on 4 and not going to score enough to make up that difference.

Plus we need that 3rd chelsea spot for another great alternative. Same reason i ditched oscar

I said exactly this as early as GW3 and called him an 11m defender.
Which is why I sold him right before his 5 goals in 2 matches.

I have been considering shifting him for a while just had more pressing concerns, but if Siggy is injured I have no real options to bring in for 6.4m and shifting them both will mean I can do something like this.

        Costa + Siggy > Fabregas/ADM + Kane for a -4

Which is way more tempting than, getting Chadli or Milner, anyway wasn't this post meant to be about Costa... 😛

I've wanted to get rid for ages tbh but there always seemed something better to do. As soon as I get the chance he's gone. His lack of baps and assists is suprising, maybe in his second season he will become the nigh on essential player that a nailed on striker for the probable champions should be.

Points chasing guff at it's best, this player hasn't got lots of points recently therefor he's rubbish. Captained by all of the top 3 three players this week, and myself.

Have 0 FT but 1.8 in the bank. Have exactly enough to do Siggy > Eriksen for a -4 hit - worth it?

      Hart (Elliott)

      Chambers - Bertrand - Wisdom - Dummett - Duff

      Siggy - YYT - Sanchez - Hazard - Jedinek

      Austin - Costa - Giroud

One free transfer and £7.1m in the bank

Currently thinking Boyd to Silva or ADM? Then I can bench Downing away to Chelsea.

Clichy and Baines are my other problems I think but I will gamble with Clichy and see how Baines does for one more week.

      Current team:

      Howard
      Clichy Baines Azpilicueta
      Fàbregas Sigurdsson Sánchez Downing
      Austin Costa Kane

      Green Chester Hutton Boyd

All thoughts and other possible options weclome 🙂

      (A) Silva
      (B) ADM

      Took a -4 last night (Azpi to Zab, Haz to ADM) to end up here for GW18;

      Forster (Heaton)
      Clichy, Clyne, Zab (Hutton, Dummett)
      Fab, ADM, Sanchez, Downing, Erikson
      RVP, Austin, Kane

      1.3M ITB

Maybe too much money in Utd attack and City def double up a risk?

(just jumped into the top 6k, 100pts clear at the top of all 3 of my MLs)
