Andre Villas-Boas grabs a debut point in a bruising encounter at Stoke. Fernando Torres repays his manager’s faith and shows an appetite sorely missing of late. Man United steal a march on many of their rivals already, picking up all three points at the Hawthorns, as Ashley Young’s debut show overshadows Nani. Here’s the Scout Notes from yesterday’s games, then:

Torres Looking Lively
Andre Villas-Boas took everyone by surprise when the Chelsea line-up was announced for the Stoke game. With Fernando Torres just back in training from concussion, surely the last thing he needed was a bruising battle at the Britannia? To his credit, though, Torres proved the Blues boss right, with a determined performance that suggested he’s recaptured some of the confidence that seems to have evaporated over the last twelve months.

With two home games against West Brom and Norwich, Fantasy managers will be hoping Torres can keep his place and lessen the likelihood of rotation up top. Jose Bosingwa’s selection at right-back over the more battle-hardened Branislav Ivanovic suggests Villas-Boas may prefer his more attack-minded game in the Chelsea starting XI.

Woodgate Keeps Fit
Robert Huth continued at right-back for the Potters, allowing Jonathan Woodgate to keep his place alongside Ryan Shawcross in the heart of defence. Tony Pulis’ injury worries continued yesterday, with both Matt Etherington and Rory Delap departing the proceedings with possible shoulder and hamstring problems respectively.

Fergie Keeps Faith in Youngsters
After his Community Shield performance in the previous week, Sir Alex Ferguson started Tom Cleverley alongside Anderson in central midfield. Injuries to Rafael and Patrice Evra meant Chris Smalling and Fabio grabbed the full-back slots, though with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic looking likely to be sidelined for six and two weeks respectively, the likes of Phil Jones seems set for some first-team starts over the upcoming Gameweeks.

Fergie once again chose the pace and movement of Danny Welbeck over Dimitar Berbatov up top, in light of Javier Hernandez’s absence through concussion. Ashley Young made an instant impact for United; the winger played a part in both his side’s goals, with a ball into the box deflected into his own net by Steven Reid.

Roy Starts Tchoyi Up Front
Somen Tchoyi once again featured as a forward for West Brom. Classed as a midfielder in many Fantasy games, Tchoyi was paired with debutant Shane Long in a front two, with Peter Odemwingie failing to recover from an ankle injury. Although the Baggies registered more shots than Man United yesterday, Long’s goal was somewhat fortuitous, with David de Gea allowing a tame shot to find its way past him. Graham Dorrans had to settle for a place on the bench, with James Morrison grabbing the left wing berth in the 2-1 defeat.

    Even bigger joke .

So weeks of planning was now waste of time as all can now change to
    the best options for free.

My team was pretty poor for week 1 but strong for week 2 and 3 ,
    It was the plan .
Now all can just change for free .

Ha. I've not had such a big smile for a long time. Well done FPL, you called GW1 an 'isolated case' make sure you keep it at that, not carried over into gw2. Whilst 2million wildcards may cause storms within price rises/falls, its something I've certainly never come across before during 3 years of FPL and im looking forward to making a LOT of money here. 😀

If this is true this is a joke.

The prepared are being punished now.

I took a chance having no Citeh coverage for tonight given the upcoming fixtures they have. Now others can get shot of these if they so wish. I was not going to make any transfers this week so I had one carry over and was going to enjoy others spending points if they chose to.

    Ridiculous.

        +1.

In all honesty whatever they did it would be unfair on some people. If you've planned a long term team you've the right to feel aggrieved, but it wasn't fair that FPL servers crashing meant some people had the teams they didn't ultimately want.

Has anyone heard back from the FPL regarding seeing other people's transfers? This is my biggest concern (of many) as no-one wants everyone to know their transfers, therefore everyone would do theirs on Saturday morning, causing the site to crash like last weekend. It would also mean players value wouldn't rise or fall (which is part of the competition) because net transfers get reset as soon as the new gameweek starts. I know it sounds extreme, but it could be a reality.

Ha ha ha ha. I was wounded when couldn't log in on Sat but was only gonna make one change and on 48 points with 2 to play so kind of disappointed everyone can now completely change their team again. Suppose I'd say the complete opposite had I done rubbish.

Seems stupid to me, people who planned ahead have got screwed and all of the teams will look similar already.

Should of just kept going as it was, if you weren't happy with your team you could of wildcarded.

Also, I am PRAYING for prise rises/falls to still happen. Everyone will get wind of this eventually (I imagine the transfers page will eventually update to show unlimited transfers with a link to the explanation, or emails will be sent out) but it'd be amazing to be able to build team value as the wildcards flood in. Such an early advantage.

It's not ideal - I, too, am quite annoyed given that I only have one City player playing tonight due to trying to think ahead - but for everyone moaning, get a grip. It's obviously far, far, FAR worse to have been frozen out entirely and A) having to start with an autoselect team or B) not be able to enter a team whatsoever.

This is the fairest possible solution.

tbh it is a bit harsh on those who had prepared for weeks ahead of the new season, now anyone can change their teams so their weeks of hard work are for nothing. Also we can all just sell our mancity players for no extra cost

Yeah but the wise won't just plump all the players that did well in gw1 into their team. I remember wildcarding gw3 last year and a who players I put in that had started well turned out to be turd! To be honest I'm pretty happy with m team so only gonna make a few minor changes and just play my own game.

Looking forward to the FFS article on this one, hopefully they'll shed some light on whether or not there are going to be price changes this week or not.

In two minds whether or not it would be a good thing, on one hand FPL are holding their hands up saying that they made mistakes and are offering more prizes and free transfers to compensate - if there are no price rises we are back to square one, granted a few people will have had a slight advantage if they didn't plan past gwk1*. On the other hand they may be causing a huge problem early on with people (us) taking advantage of price rises and killing the game early on for the casual players.

To be honest I like the drama, bring on massive price fluctuations!

*anyone who didn't plan past gwk1 is not going to get anywhere near the top of the leaderboards
