With strong returns from the likes of Burnley stopper Tom Heaton and Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan, the first half of the season has been a fine advert for opting for cheap, rotating goalkeepers in the Fantasy Premier League game. The January wildcard presents a golden opportunity for those looking to adopt or fine tune that strategy to get the most out of these budget friendly sources of points.

The Case for Budget Rotation

First half of the season proved cheap goalkeepers have various advantages:

  • They are dirt cheap, that leaves you with money for investments in the other lines of your team
  • Cheap goalies get plenty of save points due to the not-so-bright defence in front of them
  • Cheap goalies also attract bonus points in goalless draws or low scoring games due to their saves
  • Their price allows you to have a back-up, as you can easily afford two 4.5m keepers.
  • Looking at the total score for the goalies in FPL, you can easily spot that Heaton offers far more value for money than his premium counterparts such as Joe Hart.

However, we haven’t mentioned the most viable advantage of cheap goalies of course – rotation.  You can easily afford two 4.5 keepers that rotate well over the season and have an on paper easy fixture each Gameweek. Those who opted for Newcastle’s  Tim Krul and either Brad Guzan or West Brom’s Ben Foster will already know this strategy works.

Viable rotation pairs

With that in mind let us have a look at some of the best rotation pairs for the second half of the season (Gameweeks 21 to 38)

Sunderland & Aston Villa

lei, LIV, BUR, swa, QPR, WBA, new, WBA, AVL, SWA, NEW, CPL, QPR, sto, SOT, WHM, LEI, BUR

Sunderland’s defence is hitting form at the moment with five clean sheets in the last eight games. Villa has managed to keep just six clean sheets this season, but this could be down to their inspirational centre back Ron Vlaar missing nine of these games through injury. With Vlaar now back, this combo could become fruitful. The only weak spot looks Villa’s GW22 home encounter against Liverpool, but if you’re looking for a late wildcard, this shouldn’t affect you.

Burnley & Sunderland

QPR, CPL, BUR, WBA, QPR, WBA, SWA, hul, AVL, whm, NEW, CPL, eve, LEI, SOT, hul, LEI, avl

With 5 clean sheets, 62 saves, one penalty save and four bonus points, Heaton sits top on the point scoring list for the cheap keepers. Having Heaton for the second half of the season looks tasty with Pantilimon emerging as perfect rotation partner. First 7 home games look hard to resist.

Newcastle & Sunderland

LIV, SOT, BUR, STO, QPR, WBA, AVL, hul, AVL, whm, NEW, CPL, TOT, SWA, lei, WBA, LEI, WHM

If you fancy home/away rotations more than fixture-driven options then the North East of England should be your destination. The Newcastle and Sunderland rotation includes just three away games and they are against Hull, Leicester and West Ham. However, there are still a lot of uncertainties around Newcastle keepers. Robert Elliot is expected to be back on 17th and Krul on the 26th of January. Those who’ll be looking for early wildcard may come short on time to bring in Krul for SOT on 17th of January.

Newcastle & West Brom

HUL, SOT, hul, STO, SWA, sun, AVL, avl, STO, ARS, QPR, LEI, cpl, SWA, lei, WBA, qpr, WHM

We were kind of expecting more saves from Ben Foster at the start of the season, but he ended up with only 51. However, West Brom are awaiting a new manager now, that may tighten things at the back. Fixtures look good on paper, but you have most away games from all the provided options here.

Hull & Leicester

wba, STO, NEW, CPL, AVL, QPR, sto, SUN, HUL, tot, WHM, wba, SWA, cpl, NEW, BUR, sun, QPR

We tend to consider Hull and Leicester defense to be one of the worst in PL this season. It’s pity that they rotate so well over the second half of the season. With Allen McGregor now down to 4.8 and the currently injured Kasper Schmeichel back soon for 4.4, the Hull & Leicester combination may attract managers looking for a differential.

Verdict

There are viable rotation pairs over the second half of the season. It’s up to us to decide which pair would bring most points home and which defense we trust more or less. If you don’t fancy any of the proposed pairs and you’re a member – start playing around with the ticker here and share your ideas with the community. Good luck to all with their January wildcard headaches.

Have a sneaky feeling this will be one of the most read community articles from now until the Jan transfer window closes. Excellent analysis. I've currently got Heaton and Foster so know that this strategy works - am seriously considering your Pantilimon and Heaton rotation idea. That looks exceptional.

      I agree.

I used to rotate (first 2 seasons) but haven't since.

I don't actually think there's a right or wrong answer, although I would prefer a Courtiuos permanently.

Went with the 1 GK tactic at start of this season, Krul until fixtures turned then went Forster which worked well for a while. Not great since. Will go to the 2 rotating keepers come January.

Also tempted by just going Courtois + 4m GK and playing him week in week out.

            ... And me.

            Either him or Forster.

May even fall into the De Gea trap (given the fixtures) again 🙄

The problem was here Andy was your choice of keeper e.g. Krul at leaky Newcastle.

If it was a Forster, or premium keeper with a great run of fixtures you may have enjoyed even more points.

It's all swings and roundabouts I guess...

Also, the games may be good (rotation) but it's then picking the right keeper each week.

I somehow have the knack of getting it wrong. Haha.

However, is suppose if you are are a ' fixture over form' man then this should be for you 🙂

I've found with rotating keepers, I'll miss out on the unexpected points hauls and keep benching them.
May still go with a rotating pair though and take bench pts on the chin.

I just don't understand why anyone would post an article like this. We are all competing with one another so why share good research like this unless:

      a) you are a paid employee of the site, or
      b) you are peddling disinformation, or
      c) you have some strange need to gain some notability amongst the clientele.

The constant RMT, "what should I do with my team" appeals on here are similar. What you should do is make your own decisions and back your own judgement.

Having done similar research into defensive rotations after the wildcard myself I find it slightly annoying to see it publicised. Let your competitors do their own research.

What would be the point of this website if no one helped each other? Also, not everyone cares about their overall rank, a lot just want to win their own mini leagues

I don't think you're seeing the point of this site and the FFS community at all.
        So neither of a), b) or c).

My success in my mini leagues is not small part due to this site. I take advantage of all the analysis made by FFS team and community but unfortunately I don't really have so much time to spend as some others on this site. So I seized one of the rare free mornings I had to share my thoughts on one of the many problems FPL managers face through the season.

Plus, articles like this just give you the information - they don't take the decisions for you.
People will choose the rotation they feel will blossom, this articles just save them an hour with the season ticker.

It's simple really - there are several guys on here that either like to help, like number crunching, and yes some are probably looking for kudos. RMT's offer you the chance to see things from another persons angle which you may not have thought of, though many are probably just lazy attempts to get choices from those with a lot of FF experience.

Thing is you can choose to do what you wish with all the information on here - of which most is good, some is OK and bits are utter garbage. Ultimately YOU are responsible for your own selections - if not you might as well not be bothering.

This is an interesting philosophical question, which I have asked myself in the past. Of your options, for me I guess it is the spirit of (c), although I'm not sure about your exact wording. Is it really 'strange' to want to contribute to a community of people with a shared interest? By writing the article it provokes comments, which may make you reassess your views.

I'm certainly grateful to Saata for this excellent article.

Pantilimon + Heaton just stands out.
Question is, do you trust Burnley defense more than Villa?

      1. ConfusedFC
        • 11 Years

That's exactly my dilemma too. Villa's defence has been the best in the last two GW's but I've read a few reports of Vlaar leaving to Napoli and it believable since he's a free agent in three months and Villa wouldn't like to see him leave for free. Maybe that and the next 3 GW's ( For rest like me planning a feb WC) will help making this decision.

    Current team -
    Green (Pantilimon)
    Zabaleta, Baines, Cahill (N.Taylor, Duff)
    Hazard, Silva, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Oscar
    Bony, Sakho (Bojan)

I want to get in either Sterling or Coutinho. I'm unsure whether to straight swap Oscar for sterling or get rid of Zabaleta and Eriksen and bring in Sterling and Clichy. Also I could just straight swap Oscar or Eriksen for Coutinho and not minus any points.

    Suggestions?

      Sunderland : 23 -BUR, 25 - QPR, 26-WBA, 28 - hull, 29 - AVL, 31 - NEW, 32 - CPL.....

      Now that leaves GW24, 27 and, 30....

      Villa : 24 - CHE, 27 - new, 30 - SWA....
      New : 24 - STO, 27 - AVL, 30 - ARS....
      Bur : 24 - AVL, 27 - SWA, 30 - sot.....

Notice that each of these teams have one really tough fixture

Heres my first question..... Is it really worth the extra 0.5-0.7 just to have your second keeper playing just 2 other games? when Sun : 24 - swa, 27 - utd, 30 - whu.... arent the worst fixtures....

Now to what happens after GW32 according to the rotations mentioned above... All the rotations that include Sunderland have them playing only 1 of the last 6 games.... so again is it worth spending the extra 0.5m for just one game when you can just just replace him after GW 32....

this is the first time that im actually writing something so please lemme know if it makes some sense or not..... cheers

It makes sense, I'm with you. I was looking a Sun Bur rotation but Sun have the majority of those good fixtures so will probably just go with Panti and use the 0.6 I save not getting Heaten elsewhere.

I've somehow only just seen this article and it's fantastic. I love the Burnley/Sunderland fixtures. So tempted by that! However, I think Guzan/Foster is worth considering. Villa have looked more solid recently with Vlaar back and Guzan has high save potential anyway. And I would expect WBA to sure up at the back under Pullis.

Had to scroll back to find this article. Still very useful. I'm going with Krul/Pantilimon rotation.
