Kevin Mirallas’ missed spot-kick proves disastrous for Everton and Leighton Baines owners alike as the Toffees stutter to a goalless draw with West Brom. The Baggies earn a second straight shut-out as Tony Pulis’ installation brings their defence onto our Wildcard radars.

Mixed Fortunes for Baines Owners

The major talking point from last night’s match was Kevin Mirallas’ decision to take – and subsequently miss – the Toffees’ first-half spot-kick as Roberto Martinez’ men failed to score for the fifth time in eight matches. The Belgian’s domination of set-pieces has already dented Leighton Baines’ prospects in recent weeks and the left-back suffered again after Mirallas pulled rank before striking the outside of the post.

After the match, Roberto Martinez confirmed that Baines remains the Toffees number one spot-kick taker but played down reports that Mirallas was withdrawn at half-time as a result of his penalty decision:

“He [Mirallas] wasn’t 100%, he was feeling his hamstring. He wasn’t moving freely. We had dynamic players in the second-half full of energy, and that was the reason for the substitution. Our penalty taker is Leighton Baines, but Kevin always takes penalties well and he felt confident, he wanted to take it. Leighton was quite happy to allow him to do that and both have the quality to score. If he hit the back of the net then nothing would’ve happened, but both players have enough character to convert the penalty at that moment. For me Leighton is the No.1 taker. At that point I would’ve been happy to allow Leighton and Kevin to discuss that. The issue is we haven’t scored and it becomes a talking point.”

Last night’s goalless draw did, at least, bring the Toffees a first clean sheet in 12 attempts. After a poor run of form, Baines has now delivered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks and sits just one point off fourth spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender standings, though with in-form Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next five, he may have to up his attacking output to stay in contention.

Another Clean Sheet for Pulis

The Baggies’ new manager continues to weave his magic on their defensive assets after steering his side to a second successive shut-out since taking the helm. Once again, Pulis selected the 3.9-priced Chris Baird at left-back ahead of Sebastien Pocognoli and the former Fulham man looks poised to nail down a regular role ahead of clashes with Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six. Ben Foster’s save point potential helped the stopper to a seven-point return at Goodison, and at 4.6, could be set for increased investment as Fantasy managers line up to take advantage of the “Pulis effect”.

Berahino Back on the Flank

After netting five times in his first two appearances under Pulis, the youngster was drafted in by 24,000 FPL managers ahead of the Goodison clash. Hopes were high that Berahino was set to step up his claim for a place in our three-man frontlines but his manager’s tactical tinkering may force a rethink – Pulis switched from a 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 for last night’s encounter and opted for the muscular Victor Anichebe up front, with Berahino fielded on the left. It remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will opt for a solitary striker for road trips only, though last night’s teamsheet certainly suggests the young striker’s versatility could go against him when Pulis is looking to tighten up.

Just looking at FFF, seems really slow in terms of price changes. Looks like not much may happen between now and next GW.

This is bugging me on WC. Go with 3 attackers from the same team or 2 and a defender?

    Eg. 1

    A) Costa, Fabregas, Hazard, (OScar)

    B) Costa, Fabregas/Hazard/Oscar + Terry/Ivan

    Eg. 2

    A) Giroud, Sanchez, Cazorla

    B) Sanchez, Giroud/Cazorla + Kosc

    What do you think?

Anyone playing their WC this week NOT getting Aguero but going for a one week punt as a placeholder and bringing him in next week instead? If so, who? Bojan could be a good leftfield pick, home to QPR and on pens.

Yeah, if you've got 3 Arsenal then I think Man Utd has to be the next option, picking which one however is the problem.

I don't like the Hamer pick unless you plan to play Panti every week.
Not having Hazard and Sanchez could damage your rank big time. Not sure about Liverpool's defence and Monreal is a rotation risk.

I also don't think that you need Aguero AND Silva..

you said to me tomorrow about my costly defence that the only reason i was thinking to drop clichy and de gea and get aguero in.
basically i was not going for the heavy hitter with more cost
i was thinking to invest my all points equally and get a blanced team without them the 3 heavy weights..
still i m not sure to get those 3 costly players in as i have got 1017 points without them ..

          sanchez hazard
          aguero

It's Myhill. Can't imagine it impacting advice on the team though can you?

Debuchy --> Baird to save money and use 2FTs to get Aguero in for GW24.

Good team for this upcoming GW.

Yeah it looks like a Debuchy downgrade to fit in Aguero at home to Hull next week

So… my Cup game was a tie this week. 64-64.

I’ve read the rules to see what happens in the event of a tie and I still don’t know who wins!

The key issue is whether a player’s captain count for double in terms of goals scored (and conceded).

The rules state that the following things happen (in descending order) to sort out a tie:
    1. Most goals scored
    2. Fewest goals conceded
    3. Virtual coin toss.

On goals scored, we are tied. We both had Costa (2) and Downing (1) but no other goal scorers.
On goals conceded, I would win. Mainly because he had 2 Swansea players and I had none.

    However, he captained Downing.
Does this mean he has 4 goals scored to my 3? And progresses to the next round?

    Anyone got any ideas?

Or is it pistols at dawn?

No mention of captains in rules - irrelevant. YOU WIN.

Don't think captain goals count as double

I seem to remember a similar thing happening to me, I don't think captaincy counts. Could be wrong though.

If you've drawn a team in the next round, they will be on your team page, under 'Cup' in the right hand column.

Worried about Elia/Sanchez and Puncheon. Trying to hold off doing my WC yet...

I messed up WC last week, doing Costa > Rooney (leaving £1.3M ITB for Sterling > Fab), and also benched Puncheon to compound the misery.

I've finally stopped kicking myself and started looking to next GW instead, but should I now:

A: Admit I was wrong, and use cash to reverse the transfer (ie do Rooney > Costa)
B: Leave Rooney in place for LEI (H), and stick to original plan?

    Foster/Myhill
    Terry Clyne PVA Trippier Wazza
    Haz Sanchez Sterling Punchy Boyd
    Aguero Rooney Kane

(Similar post late last night, so putting to diff crowd - thanks all)

Maybe the only option now from ManUtd's attackers. Great fixtures. Choosing between Silva and him.

Useless if he keeps playing up front. Will only consider him if he begins playing in a position that makes sense.

Jeez, the type of comments on PL's facebook page when they post the dream team and how they are actually posted and get 100+ likes is beyond baffling.

This week, plenty of people are asking where is Coquelin in the dream team.

        Indeed you can:

"You can play 2 wildcards a season. One wildcard can be played at any time. The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (1 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (7 Feb 11:30)."
