Leicester City have made further moves to patch up their generous defence by signing Stoke City centre-back Robert Huth on loan for the remainder of the season. The German’s arrival at the King Power Stadium follows the capture of elder statesmen Mark Schwarzer earlier in the window – a direct response to Kasper Schmeichel’s ongoing injury travails since he fractured his metatarsal at the beginning of December.

Discussing the competition for places in Leicester’s rearguard, the 30-year-old hopes his top-flight know-how will boost his chances of nailing down a regular role:

“I’m not expecting to walk into the team, I know I’ve got to prove my worth and hopefully I can do that. I’ve been around for a few years and played in Premier League. Sometimes it needs just a calm head on the pitch to maybe calm the players down and hopefully I can help. It’s not one ingredient that you need [the survive]. I think Leicester have pretty much got it sorted. They just need a bit of luck, clean sheets and a few goals would help obviously to make it a lot easier. We’re only three points off safety at the moment, so one win and we’re back in it.”

The History

Born in East Berlin, Huth plied his trade for two local youth sides (VfB Fortuna Biesdorf and 1. FC Union Berlin) before being offered a contract by Chelsea in 2001. The 6ft 3in centre-half made his debut for the Blues at the age of 17 – as a half-time substitute in the last match of the 2001-02 campaign – but struggled to cement a regular position in the heart of defence. Over a five-year stint at Stamford Bridge, he scored twice in 62 appearances, with the likes of John Terry and William Gallas favoured by Jose Mourinho.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities in London, Huth made the switch to Middlesbrough in August 2006 in a £6 million deal, having failed a medical earlier in the window. This early hiccup proved to be a sign of things to come, with persistent ankle complaints restricting the German international to a meagre 25 appearances during his first two seasons with the north-east outfit.

Middlesbrough’s relegation to the Championship in 2009 prompted Huth to switch back to the Premier League and after scoring twice in 63 appearances, he moved to Stoke in a four-year deal. A stalwart throughout his first four years for the Potters, Huth only mustered 12 league outings last season by virtue of two consecutive knee operations – nonetheless, his threat in the box saw him score 13 times in 149 league outings, with the highlight being a six-goal tally back in 2010/11.

The Prospects

Huth’s arrival at Leicester could well be set to threaten the starting role of centre-back Marcin Wasilewski – 4.0 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) option. Having played every minute of the last 14 Gameweeks, the budget defender currently boasts a 4.7% FPL ownership and has notched three seven-point hauls in his last five outings, registering two clean sheets and a goal against Manchester United in the process. The Krakow native’s tally of 36 points so far this season places him second among the stable of defenders priced 4.2 or below, only trailing Sunderland’s Patrick van Aanholt (39) courtesy of the Dutchman’s 12-point showing this weekend against Burnley.

Certainly, having started all but one of the opening 23 Gameweeks, club captain Wes Morgan will surely retain his position, so it remains to be seen whether Huth – who is suspended this weekend due to recent social media comments – is seen as an ideal partner for the Foxes skipper. His propensity for picking up niggling injuries and lack of pitch time (four minutes this term) are strong concerns, however, and with Matthew Upson and Liam Moore also in the mix, there’s no shortage of options for Nigel Pearson.

Priced at 4.7 in the FPL, Huth’s arrival at the King Power is compounded further by the demotion of shot stopper Ben Hamer (4.1) to the bench at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Mark Schwarzer’s installation further reducing the pool of viable bargain bucket defensive coverage.

With a mere four shut-outs accrued this season, it’s fair to say that Pearson’s side have failed to impress at the back: the basement-dwellers have conceded 37 times. Given that only Burnley (38) and QPR (42) have conceded more, few will be willing to invest in their prospects of defensive returns. Essentially, Jeffrey Schlupp’s out of position potential on the left of midfield remains the likeliest source of points amongst the Foxes defenders. With three goals to his name so far, the Ghana international has proved decent value at just 4.5 but with trips to Arsenal, Everton and City in addition to a blank Gameweek in the next five, their short-term prospects look bleak.

Things brighten considerably for the season run-in, however, with Pearson’s side facing likely crucial home encounters with West Ham, Swansea, Newcastle and QPR over an obliging end to the campaign. From Gameweek 31, Fantasy managers may well look on the Leicester rearguard more favourably, with the goal threat of Schlupp and perhaps even Huth coming under consideration.

If sanchez is fit, yes it is insane to get rid of the best player in league.

Overall, Santi and sanchez will be nailed on

            Ozil and theo won't be

I also have Gru so he is obviously nailed on too

You're right, he is indeed one the best and it's insane...it really comes down to question, how you to spend the money if you do so. Will you get more points elsewhere, what's the value for money elsewhere in your upgrades. There will be rotation, injuries, etc...and of course the captaincy point, Sanchez is great option for that. Having said that, Giroud and Cazorla have delivered the points lately, there are a lot of options in Arsenal. Waiting for Wally to start delivering more points as well...let's see.

LR + Innsie, I'm thinking Caz is better than Gru and Bellerin is too good value to not pick. Looking at a potential 3-5-2 myself on WC.

    Front 8 of:
    Silva, Caz, Sanchez, Haz, Oscar/Sterling/ADM
    Aguero, Kane, Ayoze.

Perez has a decent game on GW 27 as well. 2 transfer switch as well to swap to 3-4-3 easy. Like you say there just aren't any striker options til Costa is back and Sturridge is fully fit.

    1. Beavis

Also more options to switch to Eriksen and or Chadli for the double although you can also go back to 3-4-3 with Austin.

I actually really like that Beavis. I'm currently 0.1 short of doing Boyd + Austin > Sterling + Ayoze which I would've seriously considered had I been able to afford it.

I think it could work in the short term for sure, but in the end I still think a striker will present themselves over the next few weeks and you'll be very tempted to change back to a 3-4-3.

Will almost certainly have 2 FTs by GW 26 as I always save after WC so it's not too hard to switch. If Sanchez is out I'll go Giroud though I think instead of 352 with Ozil.

Giroud's ownership is getting very high in the top 10k which worries me. I think he's actually a very underrated FPL player on here and I'm currently quite nervous without atm.

      What was the rush nabil?

Didn't someone claim Sanchez was back this weekend or was that one of those misleading posts?

Good luck anyway. I'm on WC so I'll be waiting last minute to decide if silva coming in for Sanchez , I'd fully intend to switch back next week because no sofa has not been built big enough to hide behind for not having Sanchez home to Leicester

I didn't rush, just following my instinct. Maybe I was pissed that Clyne rose and Berty fell 😆 Anyway I probably wouldn't be around this weekend, so I don't want to miss Bellerin's potential price rise.

I don;t believe that claim - just interested in Wenger's.

Thanks man. You're on WC so you better play it harder this week 😀 .Nah, that sofa is quite comfy since we're yet to see Sanchez play with a full, healthy attacking squad.

What's going on with Duff of Burnley? He came back from injury and hasn't played? Is he no longer first choice? Any sense of keeping him or should I get rid off right away?

Get rid. Keane is first choice over him now.

    Also any advice?

    Forster (Panti)
    PVA / Bellerin / Wisdom/ Duff / Gardos
    Hazard / Sanchez / Cazorla / Sterling / Boyd
    Aguero / Rooney / Kane

I'd actually shift Gardos first as he is more expensive than Duff and won't be starting again anytime soon. Consider another Saint (Fonte/Clyne/Alder) or Naughton.

I can't see the point in owning Rooney, he's dead as an FPL asset if he remains in his current position. Giroud would be a suitable replacement but I see you've already got 3 Arsenal... It's slim pickings in the forwards department atm! I would look to get rid of him ASAP though.

The forwards equation is changing fast.

Practically, he may as well stick this week.

I see why you aren't interested in Giroud after reading that.

Good point about Gardos. I can't afford Fonte or Clyne but maybe Alder - is he back yet? Good shout on Naughton I'll take a look. Yes good point on Rooney - I just have to figure out who . Thanks again!

Alder might be back this weekend. If not, next GW looks likely. No problem 🙂

Sort your defence. Sánchez to Silva, imo.

Any advice on who to get for Gardos and Duff (0.4 ITB)? Interesting shout with Sanchez for Silva - I'll wait for the pressers to see how long he's out for. Thanks again for your time sir!

Alot of talk about avoiding the template and ensuring you have differentials

Yes, but to what extent. There's good reason why things become template, especially on a website that shares ideas and thoughts.

For me 3 differentials has worked sind the beginning gn of the season. 1 def, 1 mid. 1 forward. Whats your approach on ensuring you have differentials and being logical too.

I tend to be pretty template per my post below but I've never actually seen someone post an identical squad to mine in 3 years of regularly using this sight.

So I form the view that having all the players who likely to score the most points with the best captain choice each week is differential enough, as very few people will match that.

I fully agree. The reason for high points relate to obvious shared choices. The captain is the punt and I have taken too many. with so many playing FPL, someone will pick out a gem and others will follow. Kane, Austin, Siggy, Chadli, Downing etc. Who is the next one is the $64k question.
