Sam Allardyce’s recent claims of being the most sophisticated manager in town got me thinking. In more ways than one.

Could I declare something similar when it comes to my own Fantasy Football exploits? Were my transfers and Wildcard decisions cutting-edge stuff?

Outside factors certainly hinted at sophistication in football manager terms. I often sport a gilet (see Tim Sherwood). I’m currently eating a continental breakfast and, when I disembark my hotel room, I’ll probably have eggs benedict. Also, if it’s raining, I’d definitely opt for a brolly. Actually scrap that one.

When he made his unlikely claim, Big Sam was presumably citing the new expansive formations and systems used by the 2015 edition of West Ham. I’m poking fun but I genuinely think he had a point.

The man has taken plenty of jibes for favouring route one football – when he saw Louis van Gaal’s heralded tactical playbook turn to the page that involved Marouane Fellaini leading the attack, I think Sam had a valid opportunity to make his tongue-in-cheek claim. Certainly, given the reaction from the United manager that followed, it’s become one of my highlights of the season. I thank Sam for that.

Getting back to Fantasy Football, we also know that Allardyce loves numbers: he can often be found contemplating Andy Carroll’s “minutes per debilitating injury” statistic. Believe it or not, Sam is a master of the Opta-driven football world.

I love statistics. I’m always mining our members area before making my team selection. I also use our Rate My Team tool and that uses an algorithm in its calculation. I challenge Sam to even pronounce “algorithm”.

In all seriousness, perhaps the concept of measuring the sophistication of a Fantasy Football manager comes back to the age-old “Dullard vs Maverick” argument that we love to keep simmering. Perhaps it’s a measure of whether you adopt alternative angles with your strategies – whether you’re open to new ideas rather than constrained by the obvious template choices that are presented. Whether you’ve ever picked Edin Dzeko.

To be honest, I can’t really claim or measure a level of sophistication any more than Big Sam can.

Somewhere this morning there’s probably a Fantasy manager delved in pivot tables that plot his transfers, sipping Earl Grey and listening to Cole Porter. It might even be Granville.

I can’t compete with that. I’m not even making a transfer this week. Is that sophisticated?

I’ll ponder that as I leave my hotel room to hunt out my eggs benedict. I just need to locate my brolly first.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Given the 4 teams blanking next week (Chelsea, Spurs, QPR, Leicester), and that most fantasy managers will probably have 4+ players from those teams, which players do we think are going to lose value over the next GW?

Hazard and Kane, even if they were to lose value, most of us won't even consider taking them out, partly because their values have increased so much since we brought them in, but also because they're essential to the end of the season, so their value is fairly irrelevant.

I brought in Fabregas at 9.7, and he's now 9.6. I'm likely to take him out for next week, and it wouldn't surprise me if he loses 0.1-0.2 in value by next GW. Eriksen may also suffer, but he's not in my team, and I'm thinking I might bring him in for the following GW. But not yet sure if I'd sacrifice ADM to bring in Eriksen, or sacrifice returning Fabregas to my team. Yaya may also fill in one of those spots, with a very cheap 5th midfielder (though I'll monitor Siggy's return).

Clyne and Bellerin I'm largely to keep playing each week till the end of the season, with just a couple of difficult fixtures. PVA and Wollscheid rotate nicely to the end of the season. So Wasilewski, who doesn't play next week, I might just switch to Zouma the following GW, giving me a 4.6 Chelsea defender who will play, possibly, 50% of the time. That's a pretty decent budget defence.

    (Apologies for slightly rambled thoughts)

Just a Kane and Hazard owner here 🙂

I don't think too many will lose value but maybe Fabregas and Spurs players that aren't Kane.

GW34 looks like it could be a good one. FA Cup semis are GW33 and there are CL games midweek which means putting PL games that week is unlikely, so they could go the follwing midweek to add to Chelsea

Last minute personal captain stat attack!!

    GW's Captained/Owned

    Aguero - 4/10
    Kane - 0/13
    Sanchez - 2/8
    Hazard - 1/9

    Points while captained (not doubled)

    Aguero - 2,2,1,5
    Kane - 0
    Sanchez - 3,2
    Hazard - 3

7 weeks worth of captains from these four = 18 points (doubled to 36) Really not made the best

    use of them eh?

    Points while not captained

    Aguero - 8,13,7,16,5,11
    Kane - 5,2,2,8,8,12,2,18,7,2,13,12,11
    Sanchez - 9,2,9,5,9,2
    Hazard - 2,9,5,2,3,8,10,3

    Average scores captained/not captained points

    Aguero - 4.5pts / 10pts
    Kane - N/Apts / 7.7pts
    Sanchez - 2.5pts / 6pts
    Hazard - 3pts / 5.25pts

So I should probably have been going Kane for the last 10 weeks but now he's up near 50% ownership so it won't make a difference. This week another stab at Auero.

Another day another bbc "story" headlined with a Sherwood quote. Sick of this guy already.

Yeah, I don't like the guy either. Villa have got decent home fixtures for the remainder of the season, so I'm worried Sherwood will fluke staying up, and be all full of himself.

He's the media golden boy. He lost 35% of games at Spurs. AVB lost 18%.
But the media made out he improved them. The media touted him for every job as though he was high in demand due to his great success record. Villa will go down.

    Panti
    Janmaat Wollshied Bellerin Clichy
    Carzola Ozil SIlva Colback

    Lloris Kane Hazard Ivanovic

    Team looks good?

      Yep...good
Hate the fixtures in 27 which kind of negates this good planning. Standout is Arsenal vs Everton IMHO, attacking coverage there is good

    GW27 team here:

    Foster

    Haidara Baird Fonte PVA

    Walcott Sanchez Mane Boyd

    Aguero Giroud

Only question is: use an FT to get rid of Baird (2.6ITB) or just save for the DGW & play 10 (think I'll bring in Dembele + Eriksen)

Who is everyone going with for the DGW??

    I'm thinking: Rose/Eriksen/Kane/Austin .. everyone in a similar situation?

    GW 27 Team

    Foster

    Clyne / Jones / PVA / Bruce

    ADM / Sanchez / Johnson/ Cork

    Aguero / Giroud

Bench Hamer Haz / Kane / Wisdom

Plan is to use 2 FT after this GW to go
    ADM - Eriksen
    Jones - Rose

    Thoughts?

Thats a good point actually, dunno if I can bring myself to make a defensive transfer as I'll prob take a defensive hit the following gw for the spurs double ...Kane/Eriksen/Rose?

something to think over though, thanks.

treat each one individually dont worry about the amount of hits. Taking a lot of hits works out for some people
