Liverpool fail to break down a resilient Blackburn backline at Anfield in yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final, with both clubs now awaiting confirmation of a replay date.

Liverpool Stumble in FA Cup stalemate

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chances, Liverpool were unable to breach Blackburn Rovers’ defence in their FA Cup quarter-final clash and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Brendan Rodgers named two changes from the side that triumphed over Burnley in midweek, as Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno dropped out for Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling lined up in the left-wing back role, while Markovic was deployed on the opposite flank.

Sterling’s employment in the midfield four since last weekend’s clash with Burnley could be a concern for the 20-year-old’s 31% ownership. In the Merseysiders’ last two outings in all competitions, the bulk of their goal attempts fell to either Daniel Sturridge (12 shots) or Philippe Coutinho (eight shots), whereas Sterling only mustered a single shot in both encounters – no doubt due to his increased defensive workload when operating as a wing-back. Couple this with the fact that the 7.9-priced Coutinho has been in fine form of late, bagging two goals in three starts, and the England international has dropped slightly in terms of that internal contest.

Liverpool may have lacked the cutting edge to break the deadlock at Anfield, but their rearguard stood firm once again, recording their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions. This was despite losing Martin Skrtel in the opening stages to a head injury – the Slovakian centre-back landed awkwardly after contesting an aerial duel with Blackburn striker Rudy Gestede and was attended to on the pitch for over eight minutes. Rodgers was quick to reassure reporters after the match that Skrtel sustained no serious damage.

“He is fine but he will go to the local hospital to make sure. If he had his choice, he wouldn’t but we have to follow procedure. He was fine, up walking and talking after the game but as a precaution we need to make sure he is okay.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Allen picked up a knock in training so is a doubt for Liverpool’s away tie with Swansea next Gameweek. Meanwhile, Rodgers declared Steven Gerrard fit for the Swans clash after the 34-year-old was given the all clear to return to training.

“Steven has been working well with the rehab team. He will be back training this week and will be available for the Swansea game.”

Reds Made to Wait for Replay

In an unusual turn of events, Liverpool look set to wait nearly a month to determine their FA Cup fate. League matches taking precedence over cup ties, means a rescheduling of the Reds’ televised match against Swansea next Monday is out of the question, while UEFA regulations stipulate that domestic matches shouldn’t run concurrently with Champions League or Europa League fixtures.

With European football scheduled for the next fortnight and an international break following straight after, the earliest available date for their replays is poised to be April 7 or 8, which would fall in between a visit to Arsenal and a home clash against Newcastle in Gameweeks 31 and 32.

Should Liverpool prevail over Blackburn in the replay, Uefa’s rules will also have a knock-on effect in the Fantasy Premier League stakes. With the FA Cup semi-finals scheduled during Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s trip to Hull City would likely get moved to Gameweek 34 due to the midweek European football and hand Fantasy managers more teams to consider for the double. At present, only Chelsea and Leicester have definite double Gameweek 34s, though Villa’s Gameweek 33 clash with QPR needs rescheduled after their weekend cup victory over West Brom saw them progress to the last four of the cup.

Seems to be (started last 6) along with Lescott but there is a risk with Pulis being quite cut throat.

Caz taken a back seat role since Ozil came back. Ozil definitely been giving the most freedom to influence in attack. Ill be getting him after this GW.

Yer, that's what I'm worried about with WBA: had Wisdom but he got dropped almost straight away. I'm happy with my first-choice defence (Clyne, Bertrand, Terry) especially with the run-in Saints have.

Both Caz and Ozil drift in and out of games and can explode - you're right, though, Ozil and Giroud have benefitted the most from the system in recent weeks.

            Thanks

I'm personally not a fan of doubling up on a defence no matter how good they are (although depends on if you are chasing or being chased). An example will be this weekend that you will have two premium defenders away at Chelsea, I think WBA will keep 3 cleans out of the next 4 so might be worth diversifying.

Im a big Arsenal fan, and despite being frustrating, Wenger gives Ozil almost untouchable status in term of minutes and influence. I see Arsenal getting goals in the next 4 and I would expect Ozil to be more involved than Caz. Also most of Caz's goals have come from a silly amount of penalties which will not continue.

Good morning all, following plan make sense?

    Panti
    Terry, Bellerin, CDawson
    Hazard, Cazorla, Sterling, Eriksen
    Aguero, Kane, Austin

    Subs: Krul, Moses, Naughton, Fonte
    1 FT, 4.1 itb

    GW 29: Sterling > Silva
    GW 30: Save
GW 31: Caz + Austin > Siggy + Costa (if ok with YCs)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

When is a DGWK not a DGWK?

If, as expected, a large number of teams, miss Gameweek 33 and then gain a double Gameweek 34, is it really a double gameweek for those without a wildcard left?

With two or even four teams involved in a blank and double fixture in quick succession planning can be made and a full XI plus a good DGWK team can be achieved. But with more than that it becomes tricky. A full XI and a decent DGWK team one after the other is probably unattainable for most.

If this is the case which do you prioritise...gain an extra player over your opponents in Gameweek 33 or double up in Gameweek 34?

Get a full XI for 33 is essential IMO. Then gamble with a -8 > -12 for the DGW. 2 seasons ago i saw a lot of people catapult themselves up the ranks by being brave with the hits

If I didn't have a WC, I'd probably play one less in GW33 if needed if it gave me another FT in GW34.

Why? You are still only getting two games across the two GW's - and that's assuming the DGW player you bring in with the extra FT actually plays both games (i.e. unlike Rose)

I remember this happening a few years ago and people prioritised having 11 players in the blank GW. I did the opposite and only had 7 players for the blank GW but had loads of DGWers. i came out the winner in that situation and wasn't far behind everyone else in the blank GW with only 7 players either. No doubt its not always like this because largely it will depend on which week has the better fixtures.

      • 14 Years

Some hastily arranged DGW fixtures is the ideal scenario for those with a wildcard to play. I suspect most without will scramble to try and build a good GW34 team, without paying much attention to GW33, which will leave them very short, and as such, they don't really get the DGW.

    6. Caine & Co.
      • 15 Years
      10 years, 11 months ago

its the total number of players that matter. 4 in GW33 & 18 in GW34 is the same as 8 in GW33 & 14 in GW34. So you try to get as many players as possible in total and look at fixtures to decide which players have the best fix.

This is literally the best starting place to look at it.

Beyond this, you have to consider fixtures and who you will captain (Aguero playing twice across those two weeks could be better than most players playing three times, although the last DGW proved that wrong)

I don't have any Liverpool players so having 11 playing for 33 is no problem and can have 5 doubles without a hit.

Players like Aguero and Silva won't be sold when they are home to Villa so a -4 or -8 is not that big a deal to get 7 doublers.

A strong 33 sets up the hits, a poor 33 prevents them.

In this scenario you have to be willing to see the slightly bigger picture and view the 2 gameweeks together rather than seperately.

And just as a normal gameweek the priority should still remain with the better players/fixtures - ie where the points are likely to come from. For example if my choice is 9 players +1 decent player with good fixture vs 2 extra players from a mediocre team and or bad fixtures then Ill pick the first option.

If its a case of a player in GW33 or an extra DGW player in GW34, you generally have to prioritise the former as there is more chance of a DGW player being rested for one of the two games, due to the fast turnaround, meaning that you end up with only one game for that player across the two weeks.

That said, you also have to take into account the qulity of the players and the fixtures - I'd rather have Costa for one and probably two games than, say, Wollscheid (sorry buddy) for two definite games...

If you bench 4 DGWers, have a Leicester player and save 2FT, you can have 7 DGWers for GW34. Might be worth a -4 hit to play one more. Probably wouldn't want more than 8 or 9 anyway, as that would mean benching the likes of Aguero, Silva, Kane etc....

    15. Eze Really?

A lot of teams will have players not playing GW33.
      What if:
Arsenal Villa Sunderland Qpr are not playing. Using me as a test case I will have PVA Panti Sanchez Bellerin and Austin out. I won't want to Change Terry Silva Hazard Erik Kane Aguero for the run in. Only Lescott Heaton and Bertrand I can risk in transfers for the DGW 34. I would look for An Arsenal Chelsea player for a DGW but they will be premium players and who can I get to replace the 3 players marked for tfr.
The situation will be worse if Man U get through cause their GW 33 game with Chelsea will be moved to another GW.
Quite a mouthful I know but if you follow my post, what the hell does one do?

Does this mean Chelsea will have 3 fixtures in 2 weeks?

Surely this gives them the overall advantage with others playing twice no matter how it unfolds.

The circumstances of your team play a big factor. If you can go into GW33 with 3-4 DGWers on the bench, an acceptable starting XI and save a FT then you're in a strong position for the double. Hits to get up to the maximum 33 appearances over the 2 weeks can be a viable tactic depending on the merits of each individual 2 point hit.

Another issue is the quality of the SGWs and DGWs. Man City have home games against West Ham and Villa over GW33-34. Most people have a lot of funds tied up in Aguero and Silva. Do you lose one or both of them for say, Sturridge and Sanchez? When you factor in that these could each be for -4 it's a big decision. On the other hand, Spurs don't have particularly good fixtures from GW34 onwards, I'd be happy to lose Eriksen at this point. Given that Arsenal play Chelsea in GW34, I wouldn't be desperate to load up on Araenal players if they end up with a double. I'm sure Kieran Gibbs owners remember what happened the last time Arsenal had a DGW including Chelsea.

Another thing, I don't think it's that difficult to get a full 11 out for GW33. We may not have benches to allow for any unexpected rotation but we're only going to be missing 2-3 matches:

Aston Villa v QPR (tiny ownership bar Austin)

Liverpool v Hull if Liverpool progress - some ownership of Liverpool players but none of them are template, aside from a few N'Doye owners and McShane cheapskates nobody has Hull players.

Arsenal v Sunderland or Chelsea v Utd - this cause a problem but the fact that only one if these will be blanks and we have several weeks before GW33 I don't think it's much of an issue. Had Arsenal and Utd avoided each other and both drawn Championship/League 1 sides we would have a big problem assuming they progressed.

Most should have 3 Chelsea players come GW32/33 knowing GW34 is a DGW a Sub GK with Double and 3 subs on bench for GW33 which have a DGW GW34 so should have 7 DGW 2 FT going into GW34 would give you 9 players for free

If Liverpool beat Blackburn in the replay then I think there double will be in GW37. Replay is only a couple of weeks before GW34 so not enough notice to plan etc.

    GW34 doubles will be:

    LEI vs CHE
    AVL vs QPR

Who would you have from these sides?

    CHE - Terry/Ivanovic, Hazard, Costa

Would you drop Kane or Aguero to get Kramaric, Benteke or Austin? Are any of the defenders or midfielders worth it? I don't think so.

If Utd win tonight and Liverpool win replay then GW37 doubles will be:

    HUL vs LIV
    CHE vs MUN

Who would you have from these sides?

    LIV - Skrtel, Sterling/Coutinho, Sturridge
    CHE - Terry/Ivanovic, Hazard, Costa
    MUN - Di Maria, Jones

      Chelsea- Terry, Fabregas, Hazard

Depends how you look at it.

If United win then Chelsea will have another blank (from what I gather) so it makes it really hard for those without wildcards to plan GW33 / 34.

But then you have to have United players....
