World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Switzerland

The final team in our Group E analysis is Switzerland. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side open their World Cup campaign against Ecuador on Sunday June 15 at 5pm, then square up to France five days later at 8pm before taking on Honduras in their final group match on Wednesday June 25 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Swiss served up some impressive showings over the qualifying period. Drawn against Iceland, Slovenia, Norway, Albania and Cyprus, they remained unbeaten throughout, winning seven and drawing three of their 10 matches. Scoring 17 times and conceding on just six occasions (including a 4-4 home draw with Iceland), Hitzfeld’s team registered seven clean sheets and were equally strong both home and away – indeed, 13 of their 24 points arrived on the road, with just a single goal conceded in their five road trips.

Most Starts Steve Von Bergen, Ricardo Rodriguez, Gokhan Inler, Valon Behrami, Xherdan Shaqiri (9), Diego Benaglio, Stephan Lichsteiner, Granit Xhaka (8), Valentin Stocker (6)

Most Goals Fabian Schar (3), Stephan Lichsteiner, Gokhan Inler, Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Mario Gavranovic (2)

Most Assists Granit Xhaka (4), Xherdan Shaqiri (3), Gokhan Inler (2)

The Key Targets

The majority of Hitzfeld’s starting XI looks settled, with eight players starting eight or more of the qualifying matches. In addition, a number of these players won the Under 17 World Cup in 2009 and also reached the final of the European Under 21 Championships in 2011, suggesting they could well be set to spring a surprise. Since clinching qualification, the Swiss have played three friendlies – losing to South Korea and drawing with Croatia before winning 1-0 against Jamaica on Friday evening.

Full-backs Stephan Lichsteiner and Ricardo Rodriguez are both nailed-on down the flanks. The former served up two goals and eight assists for Juventus last season, though is fielded on the right of a five-man midfield, whilst Rodriguez arrives on the back of an outstanding season for Wolfsburg, where he produced five goals and nine assists from the left-back berth. They will set you back 5.5 and 5.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Those two look the best options at the back, where Steve Von Bergen (5.4 in FantasyiTeam) will be partnered by one of Johan Djourou, Philippe Senderos or Fabian Schar. Certainly, the latter’s set-piece ability and eye for goal would be the most beneficial to Fantasy managers – he started three of the last four qualifying matches and notched three times and comes in at 5.1 in FantasyiTeam

In the double-pivot, Napoli duo Gokhan Inler and Valon Behrami will be tasked with protecting the back-four and quickly distributing the ball to the attacking quartet further up the pitch. Available for 5.8 and 5.7 respectively in FantasyiTeam, both may appeal in Fantasy games that reward defensive duties, though Inler, with two goals and a pair of assists during qualifying, has the attacking edge on the former West Ham man.

Playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri will be key for the Swiss. Despite being handed just 10 league starts for Bayern Munich last term, he still netted on six occasions and will certainly be fresh after being used somewhat sparingly by Pep Guardiola – with set-pieces also boosting his appeal, he’s likely to see plenty of investment and sets you back 6.3 in FantasyiTeam. Alternatively, Granit Xhaka could be worth a punt. Priced at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam, he’ll be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker and provided more assists than any team-mate during qualification.

Up top, Josip Drmic is a man in form. Firing 17 goals for relegated Nuremburg last term, he was the Bundesliga’s third top scorer and has already been snapped up by Bayer Leverkusen – available for a very tempting 6.3 in FantasyiTeam, he opened his account for the Swiss with a brace in March’s friendly draw against Croatia and also fired the winner against the Jamaicans a couple of days ago.

The Long Shots

Hertha Berlin’s recent capture, Valentin Stocker, may well be worth considering as an alternative in the attacking midfield roles. A regular on the left flank under Hitzfeld, he arrives in the best form of any of the Swiss midfielders, having produced 13 goals and eight assists for Basel in 2013/14, yet remains very budget-friendly at just 5.7 in FantasyiTeam.

Hey pal, congrats on the captaincy, unfortunately I'm going to have to keep my alliance to Superdunny, we came second in the Euros comp (mainly due to him not changing his team 😉 ) and we have been drawn Italy who Palm and Milainista will be part of, they were the champions who beat us so got to get some revenge! In other circumstances I would have loved to join up, best of luck hope to meet you in the final 😉

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Yesterday we published an update to our Hall of Fame. There are some impressive veterans and new managers alike in the new table.

What is your realistic ambition next year in FPL? Who is in it to win it? Who is only happy with a top 1k or top 10 k finish? And who cares not a jot about rank and will just play for the thrill of it?

MJ you've gotta link your team with such high targets.

I read every article and hottopic in the last season and sorted every article by both stickies and rating and I ranked 2.4K. Top 1k is surely optimistic not realistic!!?

I am not sure at what point better-than-average luck is needed. Obviously top 10k doesn't depend too much on luck. But, top 1k? Certainly top 100 I suspect.

I always aim to do well in my cash ML, couldn't care less about overall rank. I had a total failure last season, so anything in our top5 next season I'm happy lol
But to put in an overall rank perspective, our top5 usually within the top 10/20k, with our number one being in the top 300 this year!

Minimum requirement is to reclaim the throne in my mini league which I lost by two points.

Ranking wise I think it's realistic to aim for a place in the top 50, but as long as I can finish inside the top 10 000 I won't be dissatisfied.

Across other games I'm looking at reclaiming my eight man draft league from Andy who ran away with it this year, a format I really recommend others to try out.

I think top 50 needs a big element of luck so it's like aiming to be lucky - which is not really controllable.

Yep, I know how much luck it takes to reach those places but if I got some good luck I think I could manage a top 50 position. We see some posters on here finish in the top50 every now and then and I'm aiming at playing so good that if I had some luck I would do it too.

I'm probably aiming for #1 I suppose, but I don't think it's realistic to hope for that kind of luck. Top 50 or 100 should be doable if you play well and have an amount of luck that is big but not extraordinary. I think.

the weighting of old seasons is a bit questionable really
i have the same rank as a guy who've been 111k 111k 206k the last 3 seasons while iv been 8k 17k and 47k having had a slow start in 2007 is very punishing really
its not like hes been top of the world 5 seasons ago, his ebst finish is 24k

So, you do get penalised for a poor season?

            So someone with history of...

            1000th 1000th

Would be ranked higher than someone with...

No. Just stating the 2 season guy would probably beat 100K if he had played the 3rd season, hence has a better HoF if that makes sense.

Yes you do get penalised for a poor season. For example it is better to be:

              1000th, 1000th, didn't play

              than

              1000th, 1000th, 1millionth.

Although I'm pretty sure it would be better to be:

              1000th, 1000th, 2000th than:

              1000th, 1000th, didn't play.

They are meaning less each season & you have a 2 figure HoF. Another 10K season will get it below 50.

Yes, this is interesting as I think most people would say that William is the 'better' manager based on both histories. It is interesting to look at the points difference between you, although this would be a massive simplification of the model:

In the 6 seasons you've both played:
          Last 3 years, you are up 126 + 124 + 112 points = 363 points
          In the 3 years before that he is up: 172 + 63 + 168 = 403 points.

It is true that the model places less weight on older seasons so most people would expect the model to make you better than him and it would do I'm pretty sure.

However, you also have a bad year the year before, which he didn't play. It is also worth remembering that back 7 years ago there were significantly fewer players playing the game so a 768k finish then is worse than a 768k finish now. This bad year has tipped the model against you and meant you two are ranked equally.

Whether this is fair or not is up for debate and I am happy to look into tweaks to the algorithm.

What about a standard deviation where you partially dismiss the worst and best rank of people with longer than three years history.

I'd look at weighting against people with less than 4 years history as someone can easily set up a new team after playing for the last 6 years and would walk into top 50 hof rank after a couple of years due to not having a weak first couple of years where you are learning the game.

Depends on how much they could spend on him plus Shaqiri is 2 years younger. Depends what they want, 25 million for Lallana is a bad one though. 18 million in my opinion.

Depending on opponents, the Swiss line-up might be:

    ------------------------Benaglio---------------------------
    Lichsteiner---Schär---von Bergen---Rodriguez
    -----------------Behrami---Inler--------------------------
    ----Shaqiri----Xhaka/Mehmedi---------Stocker---
    -------------------------Drmic------------------------------

The uncertainties are in central defence: Schär has had a knee injury and has not been 100% right since Basel's defeat against Valencia. If fit, I would think he plays, but it's really not clearcut. He's the only Swiss defender who can set up attacks from the back and is a danger at set-pieces.

The other candidates are either out of form (van Bergen, Djourou), unfit (Lustenberger) or uncomfortable on the ball (Senderos). Senderos and Djourou played against Jamaica, and Djourou looked wobbly again. If Lustenberger recovers, Hitzfeld will have a tough decision. There is literally no-one else in the squad who can play left-back, so Rodriguez looks secure.

The other uncertainty would be in central midfield. Xhaka wasn't strong against Jamaica and has had a poor season in Germany, but Hitzfeld seems to trust him and he's a very conservative coach. Xhaka wasn't strong in the interview after the match either, when he seemed to think Jamaica was in Africa...

Most Swiss fans want to see Mehmedi in the No.10 role, and the Nati always looks more balanced and incisive when he's there. He's on form too.

In defensive midfield, Inler looks secure, but no-one else has nailed the place alongside him. Behrami has been OK but no more, Djamaili didn't impress against Jamaica apart from an assist - and Xhaka is an option here as well.

I am proud to announce Honduras are recruiting. I plan on defying the odds as the complete outsider team. Who wants to be a part of it? Together we will make a mockery of the the long odds. Think about this- you can say you helped Honduras to win a world cup. A damn impressive accomplishment. So instead of considering the top teams, join the ultimate underdogs.

So who wants to join the underdog team and make history? Anyone interested please let me know.

Interesting. Ottmar Hitzfeld has just taken a training session for Switzerland and divided up the squad into an A team and a B team.

The A team was: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Schär, von Bergen, Rodriguez; Behrami, Inler; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Stocker; Drmic.

I know we often (correctly) slag off the MLS for signing older players but with the likes of Lampard and Villa possibly making the switch I think there are a lot of players getting the opportunity to learn from some of the greats. That can't be a bad thing.

Hi Somalion, have you considered participating in the FFS UEFA World Cup tournament? If so any interest in being vice captain of Honduras? Would be brilliant to have a fellow Irish man leading the team.

Here's a nice FPL question to ask the FFS community.

Of all the transfers that have/will/could go through, what are you most excited about to put in our teams? Costa? Shaw? Lallana? Fabregas?!?!.....

If(big if) United do sign Fabregas, i'll be very excited to own Van Persie again.

Hey Parm / Coldplay / Aaron, What sites do you guys use to see transfer rumours? I usually just go to the Guardian as Sky's is not very good. Cheers.

Fabregas I think. Could be very impactful for any of the teams linked with him.

As I understood, for example,if Brazil plays in 6pm,we can transfer out Oscar just after his game is finished and put some Mexican player which play in 9pm and get points from both of them? o.O And we have 3 transfers for that, right?
