The Group G analysis continues with the United States. Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad received no help in the draw – in addition to very stiff competition, the team faces a grueling travel schedule that will zigzag more miles back and forth across Brazil than any other team during the group stage.

They open on Monday June 16 at 11 pm against Ghana, then head to the sweltering Amazon port city of Manaus to face Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Sunday June 22 at 11 pm, before ending against the group’s top seed Germany on Thursday June 26 at 5 pm.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Team USA finished in first place in CONCACAF’s third round of qualifying in a group with Jamaica, Guatemala, and Antigua and Barbuda. Klinsmann’s side then stepped things up a notch in the final round thanks mainly to a 100% home record which saw them register a shut-out in each of the five fixtures in front of their own fans. Winning seven wins and drawing one of their 10 group games, they secured another first place finish ahead of Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Jamaica, with 15 goals scored, eight against, and six clean sheets accrued.

Most Starts Omar Gonzalez, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore (8)

Most Goals Jozy Altidore (4), Clint Dempsey (3)

The Key Targets

While Klinsmann might prefer that this story die, the big news is that Team USA will head to the World Cup without Landon Donovan for the first time since 1998. This may put even greater pressure on the team to get off to a quick start.  Most recently, their attacking form has been relatively impressive – scoring twice in all but one of their last five friendlies. Since clinching their place in Brazil, the US have won three and drawn two of seven fixtures, emerging victorious against South Korea, Azerbaijan and Turkey from February onwards.

While clean sheets will not be easy to come by, the most secure route into the US defence is Everton’s goalkeeper Tim Howard (5.5 in FantasyiTeam), and a reasonable punt who should see plenty of opportunities for saves.

As for the backline starters, Klinsmann’s decisions and tinkering have served to create uncertainty for those trying to project lineups, and it remains a possibility that there could even be shuffling throughout the tournament. With a well-taken goal in the most recent friendly against Turkey, Fabian Johnson (who is on his way to MGladbach this summer) has emerged as the closest thing there is to a lock. Available for 5.1 in FantasyiTeam, he has started both recent friendlies at right back and has also played left back, and carries the added Fantasy bonus of still having an outside shot of being utilised as a midfielder.

Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron (5.2 and 5.3 in FantasyiTeam) have been the starting centre back duo for the two most recent friendlies and look likely to retain their starting berths ahead of Omar Gonzalez and John Brooks, though the battle for the left-back spot remains so wide open that there is no basis for projecting what Klinsmann intends to do at this point.

Turning to the midfield, Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley (5.3 and 5.4 in FantasyiTeam) should remain regulars down the spine. Both will be active defensively and, if recent friendlies are any indication, Bradley should be given sufficiently greater freedom to join in the attack to warrant the small additional cost, after Klinsmann played him at the tip of a midfield diamond against Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Two familiar Premier League names look to lead the line, Clint Dempsey (7.0 in FantasyiTeam) and Jozy Altidore (6.5). Dempsey started slowly upon joining Seattle last summer, but has been in fine form since the current season kicked off, with eight goals and three assists in only nine games – as he showed at Fulham on numerous occasions, Dempsey has a knack for being in the right place at the right time and a never-quit mentality. The US captain will look to add to a fine record against Ghana that includes scoring on a fine volley in 2006 and earning a penalty kick in 2010.

While Dempsey boasts of fine form, Altidore’s recent conversion rate has become an increasing concern for the red, white and blue. One goal and one assist in 31 appearances this past season at Sunderland will neither strike fear in the opposing Group G defenders nor excite Fantasy investors and despite notching four goals from eight starts in the second group phase, Altidore has not scored an international goal since he netted against Jamaica last October.

THE LONG SHOTS

While the US attack has regularly sought to play through Altidore in the recent friendlies and Klinsmann continues to express confidence and speak positively about him, AZ Alkmar’s Aron Johannson (6.9 in FantasyiTeam) stands waiting in the wings should Klinsmann’s patience fade. While Johannson lacks Altidore’s physical presence, he bagged 32 goals in 56 games across all competitions for AZ Alkmaar this past year and should at a minimum be a ready spark in substitute cameos, either in place of or alongside Altidore.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi (5.2 in FantasyiTeam) was a consistent presence during qualifying and seems the surest bet for playing time on the right flank. He had registered a goal and four assists in nine league games before departing for national team duty and, having netted twice in the final two qualifiers, could be an outside option.

      1. Sanchez - Really good player, very classy. I'd like to see him elsewhere.
      2. Pedro - Another very good player, comfortable on the ball and quick with good finishing. Hate the shape of his head though.
      3. No mass on Tello. Very fast, that's it.

    Rant Man says:

It's absolutely incredible that people are turning around blaming Sterling and saying that he should not have been so rash with a World Cup looming... and hence, understand Valencia's reaction!!

That was totally and completely out of order by Valencia!

Yes, the tackle WAS reckless... but he did get the ball, with arguably some follow through after... probably deserved a yellow card (at worst!!!).

There is ZERO excuse for the reaction by Valencia.

Shout to the player, demonstrate.... whatever but you do NOT go for the throat!!

Do you imagine if Suarez had done that?

He would have been totally and completely crucified by the media!!!

More like Valencia doesn't react, and the game carries on, as the linesman signalled for a thrown in and the ref didn't even whistle until after Valencia thought assault was a good idea at the time Wilshere should've been sent off for throwing a punch at Valencia though..

Technically Valencia may have gone for the throat but it was the wimpiest throat grab I've ever seen. Valencia must have gone completely mental for an instant but got himself under control in the nick of time. He got a red card. Seems fair.

Sterling's tackle had a greater chance of doing serious harm than Valencia's grab ever did.

The most violent conduct of the whole incident was the ref raising the two red cards. Was he trying to set a record for the how fast he could raise and lower two cards?!?

I think there's an argument that the ref was trying to do them both a favour. The game was getting a bit heated for a friendly and they were both probably better off being off the pitch.

Wash a bit of a rash challenge, but he was nowhere near doing serious damage, he got the ball and was some way away from TV, the follow through knocked him over, and that was about it, doesn't excuse the reaction.

Had it all set up to run my league through Mcdonalds Fifa site until I read about this ball recovered point.

I registered on the mirror site, and while I find the rules are similar to FPL, I found the players values are fairly low.

What are you guys all using and why?

Not using any myself but it seems the McDonalds game, The Mirror and Fox sports are the most popular formats. I'm avoiding altogether because I'm ineligible for a prize for both Mirror and Fox which is a shame because both sound a lot better than the McDonalds game.

Double french defence is risky. Since u have got Lloris, change Howard to cheapest possible GK and use cash elsewhere. Ozil, would love to have him in my team too, but can he perform, form might have dipped due to injuries. Here, many prefer Muller/Reus over him

Cheers mate, maybe the French double up is a bit much, as long as everyone is fit and playing i'm happy enough with this team 🙂 I think I'll take my chances with Ozil, if he can't lift it for the World Cup then there's something very wrong!

Shouldn't be too hard to switch out Suarez if that gets confirmed.
I'd be surprised if Debuchy wasn't no.1 choice, i've decent cover on the bench if that backfires.

For the Fox Sports game, anyone got good ideas on 3 rotating ubers and 2 premium defenders? So far I've pretty much got my midfield and attack settled, just really not sure about the defense.

    Currently mine is:

    Lloris
    Marcelo - Alba - Blind - Aurier - Papasthopoulos

Feel that it's abit too much invested in defense.

As a rotation, I plan to play Godin(150)/Rodgriuez(135) - De Sciglio(120) - Kolasinac(110) in that order... along with two heavy hitters, probably Alves(190)/Alba(160)...

Evening. Haven't been on in a few weeks and am catching up on articles and WC talk. While I'm trying to figure out the fantasy games, I was wondering if there would be interest in the DZ, or the site as a whole, in picking the countries who will do the best as well. It's kind of like the great Scout Picks Challenge that OC Prodigy ran this year on the site. A friend runs one for a group of us and I thought people on this site might like to do one as well.

    Deadzone World Cup Picks Challenge

Pretty straightforward: just rank all 32 teams in order of strength. Assign a number, 32-1, to each team in the field, USING EACH NUMBER EXACTLY ONCE. (PUT HIGHER NUMBERS ON BETTER TEAMS). This number will not change throughout the tournament.

    Group stages scoring
The winning team gets however many points you've assigned them for the tournament. (E.g., if Germany [28] beats Portugal [21], you get 28 points.
For ties, the entrant gets the average number of assigned points between the two teams in the game (e.g., if USA [10] and Ghana [6] tie, you get 8 points).

    Knockout rounds scoring
Winners earn assigned points the same way, except that the points are multiplied by the value of the round.
Octofinals are 2x, Quarterfinals are 4x, Semifinals are 6x, and Finals are 8x. Third place match will be used in case of a tie.

If there is interest I'll be happy to keep track of picks and scoring, posting updates after each round. Scouts, if you think this would appeal to the site beyond the Deadzone, please spread the word. Cheers.

I'd actually be quite interested in this. I'm not keen to play fantasy but just picking who I think will do well certainly appeals. I'm in if you chose to go ahead with it.

I'm guessing once we submit our numbers thats it till the end of the world cup?

Thanks, I like the matches themselves so much that pulling for whole teams is a great way to go. Yes, once you pick your rankings that's it for the tournament. You just sit back and scream for your dark horses to pull off upsets.

Any ideas on how/where to gather everyone's picks would be appreciated. Not sure if this post can stay green for a week?

There could be some very interesting strategies to this...

      32 * (32+1)/2 - 16 * (16+1)/2 = 392

392 is the maximum potential score in any given round...

Yeah I meant to say that... only in the group stages, it gets higher in the R16 and QFs then lower in the SFs onwards...

          Group stage = 392
          R16 (228*2) = 456
          QFs (122*4) = 488
          SFs (63*6) = 378
          F (32*8) = 256

          Highest Potential Score is 2754

          I think...

          How's life in Oz?

Lance Armstrong? Is he making a stop off at Team Columbia's HQ first? 😉

All good here mate, have recently become unemployed so I'm spending my days frantically applying for as many jobs as I can...you know, in between my many visits to this site... 😉

60+ applications this week alone, bloody tedious work, but it is a numbers game...

I am, however, on a shortlist for interview for a new Documentation role for a local Architects office in the city... really hoping I get that...

            But enough about me...

Neither will Bale which means Ronaldo lacks a teammate that can help his team actually win so he can later score an inconsequential penalty kick and parade around like a bare chested rooster as if the fact that he takes more shots on goal than any other player makes him good just because they sometimes go in

Mourinho said: ‘You can’t imagine how difficult it was. I think only Frank knows that, but at the same time I can feel some
happiness about the process because, for sure, he comes back to Chelsea.

‘For sure. Everybody wants it. Mr Abramovich — the No 1, the most important person — wants Frank to be back very much, I want him to be back and the staff want him back, so he comes
    back for sure.

‘He can come back the way he wants. Mr Abramovich has left the door completely open for him on the understanding Frank
can do anything he wants at this club. To repeat Mr Abramovich’s words, “He can come back the way he wants”.

‘He can be a coach, he can start at the academy, he can start being my assistant at the same time because he is doing his
coaching badges, or he can start in a different role.

‘It’s not the end of Frank Lampard’s career in Chelsea. It’s just a little break.
‘He will be back, hopefully for many, many years, because he’s one of the most important players in the history of Chelsea.

      Hahah yeah it is provisionally...

We are waiting to see what the finalised rules are before deciding...

There have been talks of switching to Fox Sports, which is almost a replica of FPL, with identical scoring and the 'man in the stands' type bonus system...

I'd prefer this one rather than the Maccas'.

If the Maccas' one doesn't change the RB points it's gonna be sooo imba to Chiellini
