World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Algeria

We now move onto the final four teams in our analysis of this summer’s World Cup. Our coverage of Group H gets underway with a look at rank outsiders Algeria –Vahid Halilhodzic’s side kick off their tournament with a showdown against group favourites Belgium on Tuesday June 17 at 5pm before taking on South Korea five days later at 8pm prior to a clash with Russia on Thursday June 26 at 9pm:

Road to Qualification

The Algerians waltzed through a four-team qualifying group that also included Mali, Benin and Rwanda. Winning five of their six matches, they scored on 17 occasions and shipped just four goals before being drawn against Burkina Faso in the two-legged play-offs – having lost 3-2 on their travels, they clinched a 1-0 home win to advance on away goals.

Most Starts Carl Medjani (8), Sofiane Feghouli, Rais M’Bolhi (7), Djamel Mesbah, El Arabi Soudani, Madjid Bougherra, Mostefa (6),Islam Slimani, Saphir Taider (5)

Most Goals Islam Slimani (5), Sofiane Feghouli, El Arabi Soudani (3)

The Key Targets

Halilhodzic sets his side up in a 4-3-3 formation which many view as a 4-3-2-1; essentially, the midfield comprises of three deep-lying central players, with the lone forward positioned further up the pitch than the two wide men. Since clinching qualification, the Algerians have played three friendlies, beating Slovenia 2-0 and Armenia 3-1 before winning 2-1 against Romania last Wednesday evening.

At the back, centre-half duo Madjid Bougherra and Carl Medjani (4.8 and 4.4 respectively in FantasyiTeam) both notched one goal apiece over the qualifiers. Whilst the former Rangers man now plies his trade in Qatar, the Algerians have plenty of European experience at the back which could bode well for their defensive prospects – Monaco’s Medjani has spent the season on loan at Olympiakos and Valenciennes, whilst at full-back, Halilhodzic is likely to call on Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam (4.3 in FantasyiTeam) on the left, with Parma’s Djamel Mesbah and Reims’ Aissa Mandi – who has been strongly linked with Arsenal – vying for a role on the right.

The defensive midfielders are also experienced at the top level. Hassan Yebda spent the latter part of 2013/14 on loan to Udinese from parent club Grenada and has also played for Porto, Saphir Taider is a regular of Inter Milan’s first-team, whilst Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb has forced his way into the XI after a breakout season under Tim Sherwood last time around. Taider served up a goal and assist in the friendly win over Slovenia and could tempt one or two, coming in at 5.0 in FantasyiTeam, whilst Bentaleb – who scored against the Romanians – is even cheaper at just 4.8.

Further up the field, the front three scored 11 of the 17 goals during the qualifiers and look the men most likely to deliver. On the right, Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli chipped in with four goals and eight assists in La Liga last term and his creativity and trickery on the flank, allied with an eye for goal that saw him notch three times during qualification, suggests he’ll be at the hub of his nation’s attacking endeavours. You can snap him up for just 4.8 in FantasyiTeam.

On the opposite wing, El Arabi Soudani has averaged a goal every other game at international, though, and whilst he lacks Feghouli’s class and ability on the ball, he racked up 16 strikes and seven assists in 31 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb last term, suggesting his predatory instincts may make him a better Fantasy pick. Up front, 2013 Algerian Player of the Year Islam Slimani is the focal point. Top scorer in qualifying, the Sporting Lisbon man produced eight goals and four assists in the season gone by and looks set to lead the line once again. Both players are listed as forwards in FantasyiTeam and are available for 6.4 and 6.1 respectively – Souradi’s classification merely strengthens Feghouli’s appeal for those eyeing up the Algerian midfield.

The Long Shots

Bearing in mind Halilhodzic has only selected three forwards in the 23-man squad, Nabil Ghilas will be hoping for game time off the bench at the least. Available for 6.5 in FantasyiTeam, he moved to Porto last year and produced four goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions – his introduction late on in matches could potentially reap reward against tiring defences.

Switzerland are pretty solid at the back aren't they? Would expect a cleanie vs Ecuador?

Very solid at the back and Rodrgiuez and Lichtsteiner offer great options as they both will got forward a lot and are relatively cheap in the fox game

Thats fair enough as France will likely be a tough match but with some defenders being criminally under-priced for their potential point they could bring to your team I think you could afford to get one or two swiss defenders from the beginning as long as you have some good options otherwise as your other defenders

    Evening geezers.

For all those who aren't involved yet in the FFS World Cup, be sure to act quickly. Less than 40 spots left now and likely to run out rapidly after this weekend.

Anyone keen needs to simply contact the captains of teams where spots are available. Captain's emails are all on here.

I don't know if this did the rounds earlier this week when first published but it is wonderful.

A critical theoretic Marxist dialectical analysis of the World Cup song

    http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/jun/02/world-cup-song-pitbull-jennifer-lopez-we-are-one-ole-ola

e.g. "The writers' genius here is that while this song exposes the dialectical truth that the World Cup's ethos proselytises for that which is not under the guise of that which is, it simultaneously discloses that that which is not is not what is. Some say the song sucks, but they don't know their critical theory."

Thanks for asking. If I play this game, I might as well join your team, IANFK, but I haven't yet decided whether I will play it. To be frank - just call me Frank, btw - I don't understand this FFS World Cup game. How are you actually playing it? What is the meaning of these GK-def-etc. positions?

I wasn't intending to play either, but this UEFA game has been and will be the talk of FFS for the next month or so. Don't worry about positions e.g. GK, DEF it's like playing head to head with another team. so 5 players from one team playing head to head with five from another team.

Well, it's kind of tongue in cheek, using such haughty high-brow theory to critique a daft pop song.

But they're effectively talking about football as the "opiate of the masses", distracting the population from thinking about real issues. It does this by lying about what's real and what's not. The song presents a lie ("what is not") as reality ("what is not"): that football unifies nations when it actually gets them at eachother's throats. That's all about the flag-waving lyrics.

So who would we deem as the essential first round big hitters? I was thinking Robben until I realised it was against Spain.

Does Hazard perform at International level?

Or is Di Maria's new position deeper playing in the midfield likely to see him profit?

Robben was still the first name in my team sheet simply because he's a fantastic player in fantastic form and I think he'll still bring home the points against Espana.

From what i've read I don't think that Hazard plays nearly as well for Belgium as he does for Chelsea so if you want a Belgium mid I'd pick de Bruyne

Di Maria is in form and had a great season for RM, He plays even higher up the pitch as more of a CAM rather than a CM for Argentina so you should definitely find a way to squeeze him into your team

I have both already, so it is nice to hear my thoughts partially justified!

With FOX you get two transfers after the round, an din all honesty, I don't know whether I will need them. It is easier to establish who are the likely starters for International teams, so unless someone gets injured, or there is the obvious form player, I think it is fairly easy.

That said, I do want to find a way to somehow squeeze Ozil into my side once the Portugal game is over, I think he could do very well against Ghana and the USA.

I'm pretty sure it's a yes to both.

Schaer has been talked up as a goal threat too, though that's second-hand info so I can't vouch for it.

    Magpies Confirm Ayoze Arrival

Newcastle United are pleased to confirm the signing of Ayoze Pérez from CD Tenerife on a long-term contract.

The 20-year-old striker was born in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, on 23rd July 1993 and joined the youth set up at his local club in 2004.

Last season, Ayoze - as he is known - progressed to the first team, playing in the Segunda Division, Spain's second tier. He enjoyed a prolific season for the Chicharreros, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances.

Ayoze told nufcTV: "I'm very happy to be here to start this new adventure.

"I'm very eager for it to begin and I'm very pleased to play for this magnificent Club.

"Any football player would be interested in playing for such a Club and I will earn my position to get in the first team."

16 goals in 34 apps in the Spanish second division. He's not going to be our main striker, one who will be slowly brought into the first team. He can also play on the wing which is where I think Pards will play him

Hi everybody. I created a mini league in the http://wc.goalscorerchallenge.co.uk game. Anybody can join and I would like it if you did.

The password you need to join is 74e312c1

The concept of the game is that you pick one player in each of the 64 world cup games and get points when they score goals. The tricky part is that you can only pick a player once. So once you've picked Messi, Neymar, Gervinho and Ronaldo etc once you can't do it again.

    Good luck!

This guy looks like the real deal tbf having won stromsgodset their first title in 42 years or something.

Have a look at this Norwegian's opinion of him before he won the league http://tinyurl.com/kvd4f8n it is a good read if nothing else.

He came from Japan and nobody knew him.

He might have been known in Europe (as deila is) but a micky mouse league like the Japanese league which is on a similar level to the Norwegian league is where he came from and therefore he was an unknown and a major gamble. I would say there was hardly a single Arsenal fan knew anything about Wenger when he arrived = no name.

.lol: Bayern wanted him when he was at Monaco, but Monaco didn't allow him to start negotiations. Only after that he went to Japan for _one_ full season. He was a proven manager in French League and Champions League, two that were pretty top things back then. Only champions made it to CL back then too, and even the had to first play playoffs - for example, the English champions ManU failed to make it there 93/94.

I'm not sure what English football fans have known about football outside their own country, but Wenger was a big, wanted name. You don't define that by some bonehead fan's knowledge, but by his merits, and Wenger sure did have his merits.

Same can be said of deila then as a manager well though of on the continent eh is no a "no name" only in the same definition as Wenger was when he was signed for Arsenal 😉

                Deila:

                - Norway winner (once), runner-up (once), and cup winner (once). Never managed outside Norway.

                - Crashed out of EL in qualifier stage twice, either against the first or the second opponent they played. No experience in actual European club competitions.

                Wenger (when joining Arsenal):

                - French League winner (once), runner-up (twice), 3rd placed (thrice), and a Cup Winner.

                - 6 seasons of European Club competitions at time when only very few clubs got there. CL quarter finalist (once) and semi-finalist (once), Cup winners' Cup semi-finalist (once) finalist (once).

You don't see difference in merits? Wenger no name in same definition as Deila?

Okay, I stop it here, you are simply wrong. There's no way in which a decent record in a very small league equals strong record in top European club competitions. If you think these are same things... well, I've seen you overlook Champions League (amongst other European competitions) and overvalue Premier League before, so it should be no surprise that to you someone who has not managed in PL is a no name regardless of what he has done outside it. But you should make a little excursion back to 90's and see how English clubs did in Europe back then.

"Crashed out of EL in qualifier stage twice, either against the first or the second opponent they played. No experience in actual European club competitions."

Worth mentioning in the 2011/12 season, third qualification round of the Europa League they lost only 1-2 @ Vicente Calderón and 0-2 @ home against Atletico Madrid, which is pretty impressive.

This is irrelevant to your discussion, but just saying.

Not saying he wouldn't be a good manager. Only that Wenger had big merits when he joined Arsenal and was not a nobody in any sense, whereas this Delia guy is very very very unproven on big stage.

sorry but youre wrong, you can state every accolade you want to prove he wasnt an unknown in any sense but what Dino has said is entirely correct, to the english he was an unknown, the papers reported it as "arsene who?" at the time, that's a fact, you simply cant change history so in that sense he was an unknown, regardless of whether you think he shouldve been known

the thing you need to accept is that back then noone gave a crap about french football, there was barely even any access to it let alone interest, people watched seria a or madrid/barca in england if they watched football from abroad so why would people in england be aware of the manager of a CWC beaten finalist from 4 yrs earlier?

He's a great manager "talent". Won the league with Stromsgodset without any money etc. Loves developing young talents. He's tough with his players, and he requires them to work hard and after his style. Probably the best manager in Scandinavia atm.

Looks a great signing to me Don.

As a fan I'm much happier with this type of manager than a Lennon or Keane tbh. He will have a different challenge in Scotland being the dominant force and having to break down teams who put 11 men behind the ball but his ability to overcome bigger teams with bigger budgets should serve him well in the Champions League hopefully.

            Nice to hear Dino!

No doubt gap is massive from the Norwegian league to Celtic and the challenge is huge. But over the years he was managing Stromsgodset he became a legend to the fans, he completely transformed the club. I think the major point why Celtic wanted him, a manager that gets results and produce young, talented players without any money. As Lawwell said,
"Ronny likes to play attacking, winning football, the Celtic way, something I know our supporters will endorse."

Former Brazil defender Alex, who has been left out of his country’s squad for the 2014 World Cup, has joined AC Milan from Paris Saint-Germain.

'I’m very happy to be here at Milan, everyone has said good things about the club to me,' the player told the Milan TV channel on Thursday.

'I’m really excited to be able to pull on the Milan shirt and I’m ready to fight for the team and the club.'

If you think of what PSG just did...

      Alex + £40M

      vs.

      Luiz

I know which I would have taken. Have been watching them a lot, and I'm not the only one who's of the opinion that Alex has actually been better than Silva.

I'm really struggling with this in my work game. Only allowed two players from each team, making Argentina spots precious.

You get 5 points for a GK clean sheet (3 for a Def).

You get 2 points for an assist. And 1 point for a Mid clean sheet.

So... Who would you say is better use of the 2nd Arg spot (along with Messi).

    Di Maria or Romero?

      Updated based on advice:

      Same back line

      Schneider Muller XXXX???

      Messi Neymar Lukaku

Who should I get as 3rd mid? Maximum 3.5m... Shaqiri? Or someone else? Okazaki?

downgrade Lukaku to Dzeko for group stage & use extra 1.5 to get good £5m mid

Okay, so here's the team as it stands:

          Same back 5

          Schneider Muller Pedro

          Messi Neymar Dzeko

Looks better I think? Good to go?

I would argue £4 for a belgium keeper is money well spent too. Dont personally like schneiders as an option either. Been playing in a second rate division. Fitness would be a concern for me with him in the heat of Africa

The rules are fairly detailed and don't mention it, so I'd stick my neck out and say no. You could always ask them.

Anyone know why dzagoev played so few mins in qualifiers, is he not a starter anymore. Did he have a poor season and fall down pecking order? He was great pick at euros if I remember.....

Pretty gutted at the Celtic appointment tbh. Was hoping for a big name who would bring big wages and would jump ship. This looks like an excellent appointment by the Celtic board 🙁

Haha, it would be a pretty terrible decision for the Celtic board to sign off on bringing in players on big wages when their name is on next season's trophy already.

Completely agree. Their name is on the trophy for the next four years I reckon. All I can hope for now is that some Eastern European team knock them out of the CL

Assuming regular FPL scoring without bonus, who do you think would score most points in the group stage:

    A) Oscar

    B) Fred

    C) Di Maria
