The Community Round Up

With less than a week to go before the Premier League season kicks off, the community has been busy assessing the merits of some of the player list’s priciest options, as well as rifling through its bargain bins. Manchester City’s stars have impressed our community writers, while it’s Liverpool stars and the prospects of a particular Manchester United midfielder that have preoccupied our Hot Topic posters.

Defensive Bonus point magnets are tracked down via our Members table review, while we finish off our catch-up with news of the latest community competitions, for poor performers and cosmopolitan managers alike.

The Community Articles

With three assists to his name, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been among the summer’s best performers.Dr Agabuse has been particularly impressed with the Belgian’s new advanced role, which prompted his detailed analysis of his underlying statistics in an attacking position last season.

This convincing form has certainly been spotted by Fantasy Premier League managers, who have been queuing up to add the Man City schemer to their Gameweek 1 line ups, according to Milvus’ latest update on ownership trends.

Will our hopes for De Bruyne be dashed or can we rely on his strong underlying statistics as a guide to likely returns? Such predictions form the basis of a superb article from Prokoptas which discusses goalscoring potential.

Bournemouth stars such as Josh King and Charlie Daniels proved reliable sources of attacking points last season, but, says Woolfgang, the Cherries are among a number of teams that appear to be unfairly treated in FPL’s fixture difficulty ratings.

Spurs’ Harry Kane was perhaps the most consistent points scorer last season, after claiming the Golden Boot for the second successive campaign. However, Coley’s latest article suggests that he may not be as productive next season, with Spurs effectively facing 38 away games thanks to their relocation to Wembley Stadium.

Kane sits in more than a third of teams and earns another mention in YTFC_Scratch’s article on the prevalence of the herd mentality in Fantasy Football. This compelling piece asks whether our choices are based on logic or the desire to fit in.

There is certainly strong evidence to suggest a group think has taken hold of player selections, according to our first FPL Rate My Team surgery of the season. Analysis by Lyonnais of the teams put forward for scrutiny strongly suggests that a hive mind has helped shape an emerging template.

Elsewhere, Frankie the Gent has resurrected the debate around Fantasy Premier League’s new Free Hit chip, offering further strategies on putting it to use, either to get off to a strong start, or to finish the season with a flourish.

Meanwhile, if trying to construct the perfect FPL team and strategy has got too much for you, Triggerlips dropped by with some advice on coping with the information overload Fantasy managers are facing ahead of Gameweek 1.

Finally, Niemi has heralded the return of Fantasy Eliterserien, following a short summer break, with a team by team analysis of the latest activity in the transfer market in the Norwegian top flight.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Among the most discussed theories ahead of the new season is that Manchester United’s Paul Pogba will be reborn, be handed the freedom to roam forward and subsequently score a hatful of goals. That’s all due to United’s recent capture of Nemanja Matic as a defensive shield.

The Fantasy Freak is among those expecting big things from the Frenchman this season, although Berbinho’s Forehead remains sceptical.

Other theories for the new campaign – notably Spurs’ potential Wembley blues – were discussed in this follow-up Hot Topic we posted on Thursday.

While Kevin De Bruyne has impressed the community scribes, our Hot Topic posters have been focusing on Liverpool’s midfield stars.

Rambo Motin is flabbergasted that nine out of ten FPL managers have shunned Reds’ winger Sadio Mane, while admirers of new recruit Mohamed Salah were out in force in our Hot topic on the former Chelsea and Roma player.

Next season will surely be another where we are left proclaiming that “we can’t have them all”, with Fantasy managers struggling to fit the wealth of available attacking talent into their squads. This is particularly the case among striker selections, says Lateriser12, who suggests that the premium forward eco-system has changed markedly for 2017/18, with even more choice available.

Even Kane may struggle to compete, especially with Man City stars looking sharp in pre-season. But as Wakey points out, the Spurs man still has strong captaincy potential in his favour. Cesc’s Old Mullet also considered the England striker’s essential status and whether we dare go without him come the season kick-off.

Competition is also fierce among the community’s backlines. Indeed, Nisag17 suggests ripping up the traditional formation form book and fielding five premium options at the back, due to the raft of tempting defensive options.

Given the performance last season of top priced wing-backs – such as Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso – talk of cheap defensive rotation combinations have been conspicous by their absence this summer. Tears for Fears aimed to address that with a look at the best pairings, while Rupert the Horse pondered the merits of investing in one of West Brom’s towering rearguard.

Further defensive options were also being touted in our Hot Topic on differential gems for the new season.

Meanwhile, our community scouts have been out and about during the pre-season calendar to help uncover some further low-owned options, with Twisted Saltergater picking through Bournemouth’s options, while Andre94PT has been talent spotting among Newcastle United’s ranks.

There will be particular interest in one of the pre-season’s flagship matches this weekend – the Community Shield – with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez under the microscope, amid ongoing speculation surrounding his future.

To temper enthusiasm in stellar pre-season performances, Abel Xavier delivered some cautionary tales for those who pay too much attention to friendlies. He points out that Ahmed Musa of Leicester City and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi were among last summer’s stars that ultimately failed to deliver.

Finally, Malcolm Tucker for England has been dusting off his Underworld and Iggy Pop albums to pen a Fantasy Football version of Trainspotting’s memorable Choose Life monologue, which was this week’s most popular post in terms of votes.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

Defenders with potential for strong bonus returns, based on baseline attributes such as passing and tackling, come under scrutiny in McNulty’s latest table, while FPL Virgin has gone back to basics with his table, which focuses purely on appearances, goals and assists.

Elsewhere, players that made the most of limited pitch time last season are the focus of boniouk’s most recent table.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Fantasy Football competitions around the world are proving increasingly popular among the community. Already Fantasy Eliterserien has garnered considerable interest and VS10_ is hoping there will be similar enthusiasm for Fantasy Bundesliga, ahead of the start of the German top flight season. He dropped by to tell us more about this game and also details of how to join the FFScout community league he has set up

Only those who have never finished inside the top 10,000 in FPL are invited to join Heels Over Head’s new community competition, which aims to discover the Fantasy Football star managers of the future. The code to join his R U Smarter Than The 10K Club league is 9355-102577.

If you’re running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

There's a lot of debate about whether the tried and test 3 x 4.5 still holds up. Old advocates are quickly dismissing any new proposals that would waiver from the tried and tested method, and why should they ? Ben Crabtree and most of the other top 50 last year used that method to good effect.

So what does the data tell us.
Using last years data, end of season prices and points. I compared two strategies.
    Strategy 1 the 442 with 5 x £ 5.5 Def and a £4.5 Fwd
    Strategy 2 the 343 with 2 x £5.5 Def and 3 x £4.5 Def and a £7.5 Fwd

Basically, I took the savings of £3m that were gained from the cheaper defenders and applied it the the bench fodder striker.

    Data
£5.5 Def. Using all the Def in the £5-£5.9 range and taking average of the PPM for the top 10 scores gives a PPM of 4.3
£4.5 Def. Using all the Def in the £4.2-£4.8 range and taking average of the PPM for the top 10 scores gives a PPM of 3.3
£7.5 Fwd. Using all the Fwd in the £6.5-£8.5 range and taking average of the PPM for the top 5 scores gives a PPM of 3.9 (Due to the lack of players who scored well in this price range increasing the sample size brought the average PPM down to around low 3, but assuming we're going to pick the guys who are in form)

So we have 6 positions to fill and 4 of them have to be scoring.
For the 442 the plan is to rotate all the 5 defenders equally to get the best possible fixtures each week by trying to avoid the Big 6 teams. Assume this will lead to a 10% increase in points.

    So the points for the 442 team are 4.3 *110% * 4 = 18.9

For the 343 we know that we have to start the two £5.5 defenders and they wont be rotated so their points are 4.3 x = 8.6 Plus we have the Forward who I generously gave 3.9 points. So we're at 12.5 with one position to fill.
We know a 4.5 defender on his own averages 3.3 PPM and we know that we are 6.4 points short of the 18.9 points from strategy 1.

So the question is can three £4.5 defenders who on their own average 3.3 PPM, can they, when used in rotation, increase their average score to 6.4.

The principle of the 4.5 x 3 rotation is that you can increase the ppm of your 4.5 starter by choosing the best fixture from the 3.

So applying the same principle in reverse. Surely there is an increase to the ppm by benching the player with the worst fixture. Rather than playing 1 from 3, you're benching 1 from 5.

I plan to go over the results from the last 4 seasons of all the games played by the top teams and see how their average ppm for all games compares to their average ppm against other top teams. (Home and away).

I chose 10% as gut feel but I want to have actual stats for a better basis.

    "Using last years data,"
And therein lies the rub ....

I'm no number-cruncher, but it seems to me there have been subtle changes in pricing that undermines previous seasons' models. Furthermore, purchases of defenders since the initial release of the price list have marginalised a number of 4.5s particularly at Palace.

For me, therefore, the options are limited to a critical degree. When you look up from the number and consider the humans involved, you're looking at precarious picks like Francis, Hegazi, Tomkins, or players like Naughton or from promoted teams that could be on the ends of heavy defeats. Yes I know they should be benched on those tricky weeks but one rotation up the park and your 4.5's come on and score minus points.

For me the system was always good on theory but never in execution; now I'm convinced any attempts would end in tears.

I wanted to post FFS current projections and current prices but I read a comment earlier where its frowned upon to release that data on here as its not limited to members only. So I've done that analysis myself but cant post it.

I agree. Most years we are struggling to find a 4.0 defender that's going to start. This year we're struggling to find a 4.5.

Looking at Ben Crabtree's Team from week 1 last year.
        Valencia 5.5, Stones 5, Wollscheid 4.5, Amat 4, Friend 4

Prices are estimates as I only have end of season prices. seems like a similar dilemma as this year.

All depends on where you prefer your funds, might work if you are determined to go heavy up front, have managed Kane & Lukaku and still a good mid 3-4.

If your committed on a strong 3 up top and the likes of Alonso et al then as long as that two has KDB in it then worth a go...

So many options /strats this season

Can anyone advise me why a 5-2-3 formation is a non runner among ff managers? I am trying to select a formation and look at it as buying as many points for 100 mill as possible.
It looks like defenders give me the most bang for my buck (or points per million per game) so why not load up on high scoring defenders such as Alonso,Trippier, Bertrand, Ake/Daniels who give a similar points per match than midfielders who cost millions more.
I would still have 2 premium midfielders and 2 premium strikers in this formation so captaincy is not a problem.
      DDG, Elliot
      Ake,Bertrand,Cedric/Yoshi, Bertrand, Alonso
      Salah, Alli

The further forward you go the worse the value gets. Of course the captaincy throws a spanner in the calculation.

      3. @FPL_Chess
          6 years, 8 months ago

If even a 5.0 bandwagon comes up in midfield, and assuming you want to keep Salah & Alli, you can't jump aboard without making two transfers. All your money is tied up in your defence. Because your team isn't balanced, you've ruled yourself out.

          1. @FPL_Chess
              6 years, 8 months ago

...and you need to be able to get on board bandwagons in the opening weeks, so as to get your squad value built up.

            • 6 Years

Because FF is all about goals. It's deliberately made the way it is to make selecting a solid points scoring side extremely difficult.

The rise of wingback will open up elite defenders to be viewed as mid-value midfielders (£6/7m) so a four or five man defence can be though of as a three man defence with 2 "midfielders", like Alonso and Walker et.al.. Do you want Cahill 178pts or Zaha 149pts?

But as pointed out above by FPL Chess you will be hampered in your fluidity of transfers. Midfield to midfield is one transfer. Defender to Midfield is two transfers.

Finally: sort the £4.5m defenders by Score and you see ones you might actually consider picking scoring about 60-90pts; Sort £4.5m midfielders by Score and you see them scoring 40-70pts with two outliers at the top of the list.

            1. Captain Roberto
              • 6 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

and a p.s. FF is also based on FORM. Player not scoring goals? Bin him. Get the lad who is scoring in your team. Since you can only score one clean sheet a game but multiple goals that makes Midfielders and Strikers on goal scoring form much better players to have in your side than a defender keeping clean sheets but tying up £1.5m from the Form Striker fund.

I think we sometimes try to be too clever for our own good around here, last year I played it safe and sensible and improved from top 200k (crap) to top 19k.

Here's some things which helped me.

          1) Having a balanced team from the start - as much as you believe everyone in your team will perform, it's unlikely so having a team structure which makes it easy to hop onto bandwagons is essential.

          Recommendation- 3-4-3 with good balance.

2)When possible save a ft, a trait I noticed from Villa Ronke, this isn't always the case but by waiting a week not only does it give better flexibility but it stops those anger transfers which you regret a week later.

Recommendation - save a ft so you have 2fts and can make 3 transfers for a -4 if needed.

          3) Captain the obvious player - punt on the weeks which there is no standout. There is no rush to get to a high rank, pace yourself and know through steady smart transfers and captain choices.

Recommendation - Play the percentages, have a mix of highly owned players which cover you and a mix of smart differentials (7:4) is what I'd recommend.

Pointing out some obvious things we sometimes forget in the rush of pre-season madness!

Quality stuff Jamie. I like the idea of only taking a punt on the captain when it's not a straightforward choice. Also, I imagine that 3rd transfer could be a powerful tool. I'm going to have a go at that this year. In the first couple of months especially to help jump on bandwagons and get the value of my team up. Nice one.

It's funny bumping into this post as I've been tweaking my team around a Kane/Kaneless strategy. I'm kinda liking the Kaneless strategy until W3, please share your thoughts on A vs B. Coutinho will probably leave so on A I'll change him for Alli/Mane downgrading Rooney.

                A - Kane

                Foster (Elliot)
Trippier/Davies Lindelof Otamendi (Mee & Rangel)
                Coutinho Mkhi Willian Tadic (Carrol)
                Kane Lukaku Rooney

B - Kaneless and 0,5 left in Bank

                Foster (Elliot)
Trippier/Davies Lindelof Otamendi (Mee & Rangel)
                Mane Mkhi Willian Alli Carrol

What with uncertainty at Liverpool surrounding Coutinho, Arsenal having top players out greatly weakening their side, Spurs having defence issues and the hoodoo of Wembley yet to be put to rest, a Hazard and Costa-less Chelsea looking very pedestrian I find myself with six Manchester players an Atsu/Austin rotation and some random bloke called Pied turning out for GW1... It's madness!!

Hi Guys I really need some help with my team! Starting to pull my hair out with options.

                Valencia Tripper Tomkins (Francis, Rangel)
                KdB Willian Zaha Tadic (Colback)

What do you think? Foster/ Elliot==Davies/Cedric/Yoshida/Tomkins/Rangel==KDB/Alli/Willian/Tadic/Carroll==Kane/Lukaku/Murray. Also your thoughts on these possible changes == Mane for Alli and/or Pugh/Walker for Cedric/Tadic? Or Quanier for Murray and using the budget in defence?

Firmino, Mane, Cout, Salah are all about nailed in Pool, not sure I'd risk Wiji but if Cout leaves, he's an option.

Willian is a good short-term punt, but I fancy Fabs while Bakayoko is out.

                  Rest is great!
