Free Hit Revisited – Hot Start Or Big Finish

The Free Hit chip, as we all know, is the new replacement for the much-maligned “All Out Attack”.

The new chip is essentially a temporary wildcard for one week, where you take a holiday from your team and flirt with the possibilities of what might have been if you hadn’t settled down with your current set-up.

Initial assessment of the Free Hit chip here outlines three strategies:

Small Double Gameweek – Use when there’s a third Double Gameweek but the Triple Captain and Bench Boost have already been earmarked for the two “regular” Double Gameweeks. This allows for a temporary focus on the small number of teams playing twice.

Blank Gameweek – Use when fixtures take a turn such that weaker teams are the only options for returns. Instead of wrecking your team with players you don’t want either side of that week, this provides a handy sidestep.

The Lateriser Conjecture – As discussed here, it can be used to take advantage of teams with isolated monster home matches in which you otherwise would have no ownership.

I’d like to suggest two more strategies. The first was originally proposed in the very early discussions on here but seems to have lost currency since then.

The Big Finish

This is where you wait until Gameweek 38.

Last year Gameweek 38 was a huge week with average scores approaching Double Gameweek proportions. The advantages are that you can use end of season knowledge and target teams that are still trying (not on the beach), players who are likely to get the minutes and assets trying to win the Golden Boot.

A second advantage is team value. If you wait until the end of the season you can get maximum use out of your team’s value. This can be augmented by taking a punt that you don’t need a bench, which can then be populated with fodder (and take further advantage of players who started at £4-£4.5 million and have slipped below that mark).

The second strategy is at the opposite end of the campaign because it needs to be proposed before the season starts.

The Hot Start

This idea is to maximise home-field advantage over the first three Gameweeks and works as follows:

Gameweek 1:  Load up on players from teams playing at home in both GWs 1 & 3.
(West Brom, Crystal Palace, Man Utd, Newcastle, Chelsea, Watford)  (*Include 2 players from Southampton/Arsenal even though they don’t have a home game in GW3)

Gameweek 2: Play the Free Hit chip and build a team around players with home fixtures in GW2.
(Southampton, Burnley, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Spurs, Bournemouth, Swansea, Leicester, Man City, Stoke)

Gameweek 3: Your team reverts to your GW1 team all playing at home. If you have two from Southampton/Arsenal then you can user two free transfers to switch these players to those with a home match who didn’t have one in GW1.
(Huddersfield, Liverpool, Spurs, Bournemouth)

In summary, the idea of the Hot Start is to start the season with 33 players playing at home and then to wildcard early if needed, either immediately or after Gameweek 5 for the turn in fixtures.

Does anyone know what happens with price rises/falls using this chip? i.e. If you've made say 1.0m on Alli price rises. Then you ditch him for one week only on the free hit, if the player you bring in makes a 0.2 rise in that week, do you gain 0.1 at the end of the week when Alli reverts back into your team? Or if the reverse happens and while Alli is temporarily out of your team he rises 0.2 and whoever you bought falls 0.2m what happens to the value of Alli in your team? Do you get Alli's rise of 0.2m?

I would say you take the rises/falls of your original squad before the free hit is implemented. Correct me if I am wrong?

"At the next deadline your squad is returned to how it was at the start of the Gameweek".

I presume that your bank balance is also returned to how it was at the start of the Gameweek.

It also appears to imply that if you make any transfers between the start of the Gameweek and your activation of the chip then those transfers only count as Free Hit transfers and have no effect on the squad and bank balance that will be returned at the next deadline.

In other words, your squad and bank balance at the next deadline will both be the same as they would have been if you had made no transfers during that Gameweek.

"After playing your Free Hit chip, at the next deadline your bank balance and squad are restored to as they were at the previous deadline, with any player price changes in the previous gameweek reflected.
Any change to your bank balance whilst the Free Hit chip was active will be lost."

So the players in your restored squad may have increased or decreased in value, but your bank balance will not change till you sell them outside of the Free Hit gameweek.
Transactions made during the Free Hit gameweek have no effect on your restored squad or on your restored bank balance.

Everything remains the same. If you had kane at 12.8 in your original team. You remove him for the free hit. His price increases to 12.9. He will be 12.9.

On the other side you bought in Sanchez for this game week at 12.3 and his price goes 12.5. No difference to your life. Its a temporary team. Your original team & bank remains, with all the price changes and all.

Let's assume you use the free hit chip in gw2, have you really got 2 free transfers after gw2 or just 1? Unclear to me.

      I've been wondering this too.

Seems like you should use 1 FT before activating the chip in case you only end up with 1 regardless

Well, I'm gonna employ the strategy and give feedback. So we'll find out.

I would imagine that you would not get an additional free transfer in GW3 for not making any normal transfers in GW2.

But if you already had a 2nd free transfer to carry over to that Gameweek, then would that 2nd free transfer still carry over to the Gameweek following your Free Hit, or would you lose it as you do after playing your Wildcard?
The Rules do not appear to say what happens in this situation - in fact, I don't think they even say that you lose your carried over free transfer after playing your Wildcard.

Only problem with the hot start is that you will be using pre-season knowledge for GW3 which is not ideal but could work if you stick with tried and trusted players.

Great article, but this 'Hot Start' strategy is surely a ruse to get people to waste what could be a very valuable chip later on in the season?

Mmmm smells good to be back. Signed back up, just finished first draft and now I see there's a new chip.. Bring on the season!!

Well since you were good enough to publish, I'll tell you what: I'll execute the HOT START and post my findings for posterity.

For scoring goals I can imagine the logic in picking home teams (tho I've never done the math), but for clean sheets mostly the only fixture that makes a difference home/away is against a bottom 6 team.

The Hot Start is definetly not one of my plans for it, due to lack of knowledge regarding the form of these 10 home teams.

A good point was made above about using your transfer before you deploy the chip so if the transfer doesn't carry over to the following GW, you will have used it anyway but some clarity on this would be good considering the 2 ft's together would be much more valuable.

End of the season is the one I've bookmarked it for unless we come across a big blank GW or I desperately need to use it early on.

I think it's best saved and when the right week comes around, you'll just know based on your squad.

I agree, play your team as normal and then use the chip Saturday morning after making your transfers in the week.

Was hoping for a bit of advice on my first ever RMT
    Foster
    Trippier Daniels Yoshida
    Chadli Willian De Bruyne Alli
    Laca Lukaku Austin
    Subs: Elliot Prodl Ritchie Mee
    Any thoughts really welcome

Too much on your bench. Downgrade Ritchie to 5.0 and upgrade Chadli to 7.0 (there are plenty).

I'm going to use the chip in a week of injuries, or a week where my players have poor fixtures.

    More like a rescue chip!

Would be pretty painful to use it and then watch your current team outscore the free chip team.
