Manchester City make short work of Watford as Raheem Sterling scores again, while Crystal Palace come from behind to win at Southampton.

Whisper it maybe, but there’s a sense of continuity beginning to settle over Pep Guardiola’s selections.

An injury to Gabriel Jesus means Sergio Aguero should be in for a long run of matches up front, Kevin De Bruyne was passed fit and started as usual and Raheem Sterling is now almost indispensible.

The England midfielder opened the scoring before a minute had been played last night as the predicted drubbing of Watford looked very much on.

The Hornets, to their credit, kept the final score down to just 3-1, but nobody can stop Sterling at the moment.

It was his fifth goal in as many Gameweeks – from only four starts – and his ninth strike (of 14 for the season) at the Etihad Stadium.

While most of us handed Harry Kane the armband expecting double delights from the Spurs striker, 3.6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers went for Sterling as their captain and were rewarded with nine points, including two bonus, as the England international consolidated second place in the midfielders’ scoring chart.

Just behind him comes De Bruyne, who shook off the effects of Jason Puncheon’s industrial tackle on New Year’s Eve to continue his 100% league attendance record this season.

The Belgian was at his usual influential best, providing two assists and collecting maximum bonus for his third double-digit haul in six Gameweeks. He now tops the assists’ table with 11 – one ahead of Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez.

City’s other scorer was Aguero, who had endured two straight blanks prior to Gameweek 22 but was still brought in by 214,000+ managers on the back of the injury to Jesus that will sideline the Brazilian for at least a month.

Watford defender Christian Kabasele turned a De Bruyne cross into his own net to complete the home side’s tally.

Aguero’s goal capped a busy night for the forward, whose five shots in the box is currently the Gameweek-high, while Leroy Sane’s assist for Sterling’s opener was the German’s first return in four matches.

David Silva returned to the starting line-up after missing two matches for personal reasons, but Guardiola admitted post-match that the Spanish midfielder’s appearances remain a fluid issue.

“He’s free to stay or leave, it depends. He wants to stay because he enjoys it, but family is the most important thing in life. Some days he will be here some he will be out, it depends how his family is.”

With Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva available as cover for the Spaniard, Guardiola has few worries in midfield, but it is Sterling and De Bruyne who continue to be our go-to men in FPL.

Back strain eases for Guardiola

A late Andre Gray goal, from an Andre Carillo assist, disappointed the 1.8 million managers hoping for a fourth straight clean sheet from Nicolas Otamendi.

But that short-term pain came with the promise of future gain as John Stones returned to partner the Argentine in the centre of defence following a nine-match injury lay-off.

The pair combined for six of City’s ten shut-outs this season prior to the England international’s hamstring issue, with Stones’ 3.3% ownership given an extra boost last night when Guardiola took him off after 66 minutes, thus securing him clean sheet points before the Gray goal.

He is a full 1.0 cheaper than Otamendi (6.4) and will be a major temptation for those who have missed out on the Argentine’s points, particularly with City’s schedule (NEW WBA bur LEI) looking strong in the short-term once a Gameweek 23 trip to Liverpool is out of the way.

While City’s central options received a boost, Guardiola was handed a headache on the flanks when the 13.9%-owned Kyle Walker picked up a groin problem.

The coach declared post-match, in decidedly dramatic fashion, that the full-back would need to be assessed.

“He might have a little problem – what everyone saw in the last weeks is how many injuries the players have. We are going to kill them. It’s not normal to play 31st and two days later.”

The big problem for Guardiola is that his side’s schedule remains relentless.

City entertain Burnley in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, follow that up with an EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Bristol City on Tuesday and then move on to a Sunday trip to Anfield.

Better luck for Luka

Crystal Palace came from behind to win 2-1 at Southampton, with Luka Milivojevic tucking into a large slice of redemption.

He hit the winner at St Mary’s just two days after missing an injury-time penalty against Man City that would have secured a vital three points for Roy Hodgson’s side.

It was the Serbian international’s first Palace goal from open play, earning him maximum bonus to boot, and he now has three strikes from the past six Gameweeks thanks to his otherwise exemplary penalty-taking form.

The midfielder remains good value at 4.6, while team-mate Andros Townsend continues to provide fine returns for his 5.6 outlay.

The winger is owned by a mere 1.2% of managers, but is outscoring the more popular (5.5%) and expensive (6.9) Wilfried Zaha by 72 points to 63 this season.

Townsend’s recent form is also superior as he’s now scored one goal and set up three over the last five Gameweeks. During the same period, Zaha has managed just one goal and an assist.

Palace’s fixtures (BUR ars whu NEW eve) offer relatively decent prospects of more of the same from the cut-price winger.

James McArthur hit the Eagles’ equaliser last night, from a Christian Benteke assist, as Hodgson’s decision to introduce Bakary Sako as a partner for the Belgian striker in a second-half 4-4-2 turned the match.

Southampton opened the scoring when Shane Long found the net for the first time in 1,320 long and barren league minutes.

Right-back Jeremy Pied produced the assist, but it’s now just two clean sheets in 12 home matches for the Saints as Saturday’s battling 0-0 draw at Old Trafford proved to be a false dawn for Mauricio Pellegrino’s struggling side.

Their schedule is excellent all the way through to Gameweek 33, with home matches against Spurs and Liverpool the only major tests. But their form is anything but encouraging.

Hodgson, meanwhile, confirmed that both Scott Dann and Puncheon sustained cruciate ligament injuries against Man City.

“They’ll both see a specialist and likely undergo surgery once the swelling goes. We won’t see them play again this season and may not be ready for the start of next. They’re very serious injuries.”

Same concern, on 28 with no hits.

Morata, Alonso, kane (C), Arny, Son, Adrian, Masuaku left to go.

Arsenal Chelsea hard to predict, im an Arsenal fan but happy for Morata and Alonso to get attacking returns as long as the Gunners get 3 points 🙂 can't see points coming from WH defence and don't really want them anyway with Kane as cap ! Son a rotation risk so can only hope Arny and Kane do the business.

28 (-12) and just Sanchez, Ogbonna, Lanzini, Kane and Son left. Yesterday felt like everything that could go wrong went wrong. Sanchez withdrawn one minute before the hour mark and i was so pissed at myself for trying to be clever and pick him in front of Vert. Lanzini mom but no points, Zaha missed a sitter, son missed a sitter and Son should have got a penalty as well. My sixth cs that i´ve lost this season on strange circumstances, never had this before and it is so frustrating when you do good picks (albeit Sanchez) that for some reasons don´t get cs. Ward injured during a game, Kola benched for 3 matches, two cs, Christensen got a man flu, missed two certain cs and now Sanchez (admittedly lucky not a red card obviously but still).

Lots of people writing of the DGW as a disaster, so far so good for me and Spurs v WHU always high scoring affair and with both teams needing a result I think its going to be OK. On 59pts with 6 players still to play inc tonight.

What's the point for Barcelona in paying the extra winter premium? The move will happen in summer. He's cup-tied for CL and Barca have already won the league. Barca pay less in the summer, Liverpool get a world class player for 6 more months then ample time to find a replacement when they won't be held hostage (of course, Keita could be the replacement). Makes no sense that it'll happen now.

        It makes every sense.

First of all, where do you get the idea that Barcelona pay less in the summer? That's a blank assertion.

Second, you may not have noticed but there's a World Cup this summer. Coutinho will get a break after that finishes and wouldn't be able to start training with his new team-mates in any meaningful way until 1-2 weeks before the season starts.

If they sign him now he has 5 months to settle in and will be ready to play a full part from the beginning of next season. That's why a January move suits Barça. And it would suit Coutinho too. Whether Liverpool will agree is another story.

That is a good point about the World Cup i did not consider that scenario.
That certainly makes a January move much more logical.

        2. Carpe Diem
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

It doesn't. Have you never followed football? January fees are always exorbitant. Why would Liverpool not charge a 100m premium now when they'll be held hostage for a replacement in 20 days rather than in tbe summer when they already have a replacement?

I don't think you notice how the world cup will work in favor of liverpool. They can reject every bid like they did in the summer. Coutinho can't go on strike because he has a world cup to be in form for.

A pre season is enough for him to gel with his teammates. He's a professional, not a kid moving abroad.

I'm assuming you're a non-owner trying to convince yourself the points you missed out on are worth it.

What kind of guy is it that doesn't even recognise when a good point has been made and resorts to accusations of bias?

Coutinho and his wife need to settle in Barcelona. They need to find a house. He needs to get used to a new club and new team-mates. His new team-mates and manager need to adjust to how they will play with him in the team. If you don't think that requires more than (at best) a couple of weeks then your experience of life must be limited.

I am not saying it will happen or that it won't. How would I know? I'm just disagreeing that "it makes no sense". It makes a lot of sense, both for Barça and for Coutinho.

Incidentally, Liverpool paid a premium for Keita in order to buy him in the summer when his release clause was actually less than what they agreed to pay. When you get to the region of €150m (as Barça are reportedly offering for Coutinho) then €5m here or there makes little difference. Liverpool are going to get top dollar for Coutinho whenever they sell him, that's the FSG business model. Winter or summer makes no difference to that.

        exactly

deal is going to be done maybe now but just as a pre agreement, 1july. Bascombe is my source, and he says along with Guilleme Balague that Barcelona have not come up with a new offer, yet, so until then Coutinho won´t strike, so i agree with you

Coutinho is a nice guy but he wants to go Barcelona, but as we´we seen he played his best football for Liverpool after he was back from eh... back injury. it´s a natural response to be dissapointed albeit a little childish but i don´t blame him much.

        Premier league will miss him.

I don't have that kind of foresight. But I do have the foresight to not triple captain him when he's flagged, playing the worst side in the league (hence little risk of benching him) in a match right near the end of an incredibly congested festive period. Or maybe that's just common sense.

My point is you’re giving us your smug verdict when he has 90 minutes left against a fairly poor side off the back of two hat tricks. He may get sent off in the first minute or he could score 4. We simply don’t know and personally I think you’re not more than a little premature.

Very different, you often own players you prefer not to have but had higher priorities to transfer, but to captain someone you must think he's going to get a decent haul.

Playing a West Ham side that've tightened up defensively at Wemberley where he has blanked 60% of the time this season. If he scores a hattrick it works for me because I captained him, but I'm confident there'll be much better triple captain opportunities later on in the season.

        1. Dave Bauer
          • 16 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

That’s the nature of the game.

I think a hat trick is unlikely but I would be more than happy with 18 points from my TC. I cannot believe anyone who used the chip this week would gamble that for potentially more later in the season.

Really? I was disappointed with 18 points from captaining Salah the other week let alone triple captaining Kane for a double gameweek. I suppose we have two very different philosophies to this game.

Yes, really. There won’t be loads of weeks where you’ll have a viable triple captain score more heavily than that. I’m honestly not sure what people expect.

18 points could easily be the difference between winning several mini leagues and not or finishing in the top 1k this season.

Thank you. That flag was very concerning, hence why I didn't triple captain him. But also by the law of averages I certainly didn't believe he was going to deliver a hattrick of hattricks. He's not Ronaldo.

It's just a judgement call for each and everyone to make. Only after Thursday night will any of us know whether it was a good one. I didn't TC him but still am aware that this could still end up being an error.

Yep I did and knew it was an error.... I think there are people who've made worse trip captain picks so not sure it needs such blunt unbelievable decision comment but each to their own. Complex game this and sometimes you get caught making a decision at the wrong time, usually close to deadline. Someone said something to me about him positively and had a weak moment. Regretted it thereafter, just being honest!

    1 FT
    0,7 ITB

    Courtois / Speroni
Otamendi, Jones, Lascelles / Masuaku, Klavan
    Sterling, Eriksen, Hazard, Son, Atsu

VVD playing and Aguero needing a keeper mistake to score vs Watford is not great. If Coutinho leaves, Firmino loses a bit of appeal.

That's it right. It looks like it might be time to move away from 2-3 man Pool attack, and just stick with Salah as your Pool asset. On the other hand it mess with the team structure and results in another hit or two bringing in Agüero for 1½ month.

The thing is. After this GW I really want to start moving out Spurs assets again and end up with only Kane again 😉

Firmino + Eriksen -> Lingard + Agüero (-4) looks great, but I have to keep in mind, that it wil result in -4 or 8 to get Salah back in for Son unless I finally get rid of Hazard 🙂

      Not with that OR tbh.

      You've done great!
I am on -92 and looking to do another -4 this week and the next 😀 Might save my FT though.

One thing I don't understand. Salah injured and then City. I would have taken a hit to get rid for another Spurs mid (and I did). Ofc I will bring him back, but already now it is kinda obvious that Eriksen and Alli both will outscore Salah by 8 after this GW and the next? 🙂

true! I had a lot of value tied up in Salah, since I got him for 9.2. So I was happy to save him a week, when I was happy with my first sub. Then Vardy didn't play and it ruined it all!
