The Community Round Up

The fall out from last weekend’s FA Cup matches dominated discussions as our hot topic posters began planning in earnest for blank fixtures and impending double Gameweeks. Watford’s malaise also comes under scrutiny, while our community scribes get to grips with team form and fans’ views ahead of this weekend’s matches. Aerial heroes and on-pitch villains are the focus of our latest Members tables and we also find out who the best crystal ball gazers are in our community tournaments round up.

The Community Articles

With a break from the Premier League over the previous weekend, Kavali took the opportunity to look in more detail at the Fantasy Premier League careers of the 34 veterans he is tracking this season. While their pedigree is not in question, his analysis shows that experience has counted for little in this most unpredictable of campaigns, in which Leicester are the surprising frontrunners to claim the Premier League trophy.

As The Sarjeant’s latest colour coded form guide shows, Leicester’s dominance of this year’s Fantasy season is no fluke as they look to cement their lead further when Norwich visit in Gameweek 27. There was more advice for this weekend’s best assets from the fans themselves, thanks to Bolivian Seaman‘s research.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Amongst the most surprising FA Cup results last weekend was Crystal Palace’s victory over Tottenham. While this was bad news for Spurs fans, it was a cause for celebration amongst Fantasy managers as the North London side escape a blank Gameweek 30 and make planning far easier for that weekend, when FA Cup quarter finals take place.

As our discussion on Gameweek 30 planning shows, the ability to now field popular picks such as Harry Kane that week have given the community the chance to make a luxury move or two.

Renewed confidence in being able to field a strong team in Gameweek 30 has also started to shape our planning for Gameweek 27, when the Capital One Cup final means Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle all miss a fixture.

However, for those looking to load up on Spurs assets immediately, Mousa Dembele’s absence through injury over the next two weeks may curtail their points potential, according to my latest research.

Faster return on investment is predicted for Leicester’s assets in Gameweek 27, when the Foxes take on Premier League whipping boys Norwich. Ktk_interista weighed up the merits of captaining one of their two key players, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, for this plum tie.

With every blank comes a double Gameweek and based on UEFA scheduling, Gameweek 34 and 37 look the the likeliest times to schedule more matches. Balders dropped by to offer some great advice around wildcarding and getting the most out of FPL chips over this period. Licious Lizard also offered some key tips on double Gameweek planning and even Manchester City’s misfiring midfielders are attracting interest for their impending double fixture.

Although they haven’t quite reached the dizzy heights set by Leicester, Watford have impressed this season and look to have already secured their Premier League status despite a recent dip in form. Hornets’ fan Applebonkers took a look at why his side’s performance have been so poor in recent weeks and believes that the recent hectic fixture schedule, that has included cup games, may be a key factor.

The Members Tables

Two of our newest members, Eden Hazardous and Pochecinno, have already got to grips with the statistics on offer by constructing some useful tables. Eden Hazardous’ Bloopers table looks at this season’s biggest under performers, while Pochecinno has being looking at the teams with the biggest aerial threat.

Elsewhere, Doosra has been assessing some big-name stars that are falling foul of FPL’s Bonus Point System and Andrewlimkh’s focus is on the best and worst goalkeepers in recent weeks.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

With a lack of Premier League action last weekend, Jarvish’s popular FA Cup Yes/No competition took centre stage amongst our community competitions. The latest soothsayer-in-chief in this predictions contest proved to be Greenwindmill, followed by Costa.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Do you guys know why Alli only played 30 minutes against Watford and 45 minutes against Norwich? Were they both because he was dizzy or a tactical move?

Against Norwich he felt ill and was still dizzy when they played Watford, so yes.

OK. I assume he's OK now with him playing a lot lately. Could be another reason for him to get rotated though...

Would you do Simpson -> Fuchs for -4. I have Aguero on the bench and Kane/Dawson as slight doubts so I'm a bit concerned about having 11 players to play.

For the record: all my positioning against Mahrez could mean nothing because this is football in the end. I own and am mostly happy with that as Vardy being on pens edges it some..

Doubling up on defence: is it worth it?

In some cases, it is. If a strong team defensively has a great run of fixtures and there's only 1 attacking player you would ever consider for that team in the medium term then you could consider doubling up. But this is rarely the case.

Doubling up can lead to many problems:

    - We want 2 attackers from a particular team and now have to waste a transfer to sell one of our defenders from.
    - The team loses a key defensive player and suddenly they are finding CS hard to come by
    - The team goes on a mixed/bad run of fixtures and you find that a good number of weeks you have 2 defenders already who you don't want to play.
    - The team just generally loses the defensive form it once had for a combination of reasons

Examples of above: City had 5 CS in first 5 games and then only had 2 in 13.
Stoke had no CS in 7 but then had 7 in 9 and since then have only managed 2 in 10
West Brom had 6 CS in 10 but then went 10 games without a CS
Southampton had 1 CS in 12 but have now had a run of 6 CS

Having 5 unique defenders means that most weeks you will have 3 defenders with good fixtures and chance of CS. If you look ahead and realise you will be short of a 3rd defender in a number of fixtures then you can find a suitable replacement that has good fixtures in them weeks.

Doing this should massively reduce the need for you to change your defenders about. You can ride a bad run of form + fixtures by keeping a defender on the bench rather than have an inherent need to sell.

I just thought I'd post this out there because I always see people asking about questions on doubling up, so I'll be able to link them to this from now on! Interested to hear people's thoughts on it too and those that have doubled up on defence before and why. (and have they regretted it later on?)

Ah ok cool! Yeah, figured it had prob been done before but I'm still relatively new to this site this year having been a casual in previous years so just wanted to know if my thinking was correct - given I've seen a fair number of people posting about doubling up at various points throughout the season 🙂

Of course, you can actually triple up on two defences (a keeper and two defs from each) and rotate them if you want. Nothing says you have to play them every week.

There have been some fabled double ups on defence over the FPL years.
I did it on Leicester late on last year for the last 9 GWs and it directly led to 9 greens in a row, 40k to 5k.

Stoke, WBA, Swansea, AV etc, etc, in different seasons. It's always worth it if you can pick the right cheap defence at the right time. Not worth it with expensive defenders, imo, as those teams tend to have the premium FPL attackers too, and the option of two of those is always better.

Then there's the Tosey, a triple up

A fair few doubled or even tripled on Saints defence last year.

Plenty had both Clyne and Berty

Late on the season I suppose I can understand it more and the risk can definitely pay off. I guess also you can do it a few weeks before you plan to use a wildcard if there's a team with very good fixtures.

And yeah, good teams it's rarely worth it although I guess maybe when you had the boring Chelsea 1-0 wins back in the day then 2 expensive Chelsea defenders then would def. have been worthwhile.

I have doubled on 2 defences and wish I hadn't in both cases

I have Schmeichel and Simpson, which has put Vardy off the radar and I have Henessey and Ward, and Palace are just crap, though Bolasie coming back might help.

i doubled up on henn/ward + butland/woll - served me well for a while with rotation but once they both hit their slump at the same time it cost me heavily. I still have 3 of them now because its hard to sort defence out when this happens.

    Hi guys,

    My current team:

    Butland, Henne
    Dann, Daniels, Martin, Moreno*, Simpson*
    Mahrez, Ozil, Payet, Alli, Firmino*
    Vardy, Kane, Kun*

I know by using my single FT I can have my starting XI but with Martin playing. Should I take a hit to swap him out or keep him in sub?

My plan will then be: Simpson + Firmino --> Fuchs + Arnie

Been straggling for 2 weeks with a decision.

      Basically means both will play
He has to risk Smalling in a game like this

Can't have Carrick blind at CB against Arsenal; it's not Midtylljand

glad I made the call to sell GJ. He is out for a few weeks but I had only him, Simpson and Kin out this week

But Smalling has to be considered unlikely on current evidence so getting VVD in has left me Ward om the bench in case, whereas had I kept GJ I could well have been down to 10

Plus VVD is a good solid pick until GW33

Having both GJ and Simpson is very bad luck! Ouch... Think you made solid transfer choices afterwards though

that is just some of the worst luck I have ever seen mate

To have 1 defender sent off is bad luck, to have 2 sent off in the same week

Hello all, playing in a draft league and different options for the armband. Does this look right??

    Butland
    Huth, Monreal, VVD, Wolly, Cresswell
Alli, Payet (c), Mahrez (vc), Sanchez
    Ighalo

    2 quick questions:

    A) Schmeichel (NOR) or Butland (AVL)

    B) Why all the doubt for Leicester, currently have (C) on Vardy, but also have Kane, any advice?

Doesn't seem to have been much on here about Utd player updates today, probably as not many own them! Here it all is anyway.

De Gea - "I expect [David can return] because I saw the way he was on Thursday," he told reporters at his press conference.

Smalling - "Chris is a question mark, but you never know."

Martial - "I don’t know [about Martial] because it has happened before the match. I have talked with him.I have talked with the physiotherapist that already had control of him. I cannot say, but it is not as heavy as everybody thinks."

Rojo - "I am very happy with Marcos [Rojo] that he played 10 or 15 minutes and how he showed already his form and shape, he was very good. But I have to build him up in the games and that's not so easy because he only had two training sessions with me"

Valencia and Fellaini - "[Antonio] Valencia is also coming back and [Marouane] Fellaini too - in the month of March, a lot of players are coming back and then we have a strong selection again."

    GTG?

    Schmeichel
Kos / Alderweireld / Van Dijk
    Alli / Ozil / Mahrez / Payet
    Hardy / Kane / Ighalo

    Fabianski / Williams / Barkley / Jags

1FT (already done Lukaku to Vardy) - any work required?
