Marko Arnautovic is amongst the goals as Austria scramble past Malta. Martin O’Neill makes wholesale changes as the Republic of Ireland lose at home to Belarus in their penultimate friendly before Euro 2016 gets underway next week.

Austria 2 Malta 1

Austria failed to impress against a Malta side that were soundly thrashed 6-0 by the Czech Republic at the weekend.

Marcel Koller’s side toiled to a 2-1 home win, mustering just three shots on target over the 90 minutes.

Regulars Marko Arnautovic, Martin Harnik and Zlatko Junuzovic all started in the attacking midfield three slots, with the former maintaining his fine domestic form by grabbing the opener. Given that Arnautovic and Harnik (both priced at 7.0) are classified as forwards in the Uefa game, though, it leaves Junuzovic as the only midfielder on offer in the final third. Available for 6.5, the Werder Bremen man created four chances from the central support role behind Marc Janko and earned an assist.

Schalke’s Alessandro Schopf was handed his first start by Koller – stationed in the double-pivot, he netted his nation’s second goal but is unlikely to be no more than back-up for David Alaba. The Bayern man hardly covered himself in glory, though, after climbing off the bench to register an own goal.

At the back, Martin Hinteregger has now started each of the last three friendlies at centre-half under Koller. Coming in at 4.5, he looks to have emerged as a budget enabler, though with a single clean sheet in seven, Koller’s side have been far from convincing defensively.

Austria XI: Lindner (Ozcan 46); Klein, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Suttner; Baumgartlinger (Ilsanker 46), Schopf (Alaba 63); Harnik (Hinterseer 64), Junuzovic, Arnautovic (Sabitzer 46); Janko (Okotie 72)

Republic of Ireland 1 Belarus 2

A much-changed Republic of Ireland fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Belarus last night.

Martin O’Neill made 11 alterations from the side that drew with Holland on Friday evening as he ran the rule over a number of fringe players prior to naming Ireland’s 23-man squad for the Euros.

The hosts only improved after O’Neill sent on the likes of Shane Long and Wes Hoolahan midway through the second period, with the Southampton man supplying an assist for Stephen Ward’s consolation. Priced at 6.5 in Uefa, Long looks a nailed-on option for the Irish up top, given that Robbie Keane is still nursing a calf injury sustained during training at the weekend.

Elsewhere, Villa’s Ciaran Clark (5.0) – with three efforts inside the box – offered the most threat from the home side, though remains a somewhat risky pick at the back. O’Neill’s decision to start Shay Given also indicates that Darren Randolph will be his first-choice keeper for the tournament – priced at 4.5, the West Ham man had started five of the six matches prior to last night. With a couple of shut-outs in seven, though, he may have to rely on save points if O’Neill’s side fail to improve their resilience against Italy, Belgium and Sweden in the group stages.

Republic of Ireland XI: Given (Forde 69); Christie, Keogh, Clark, Ward; Gibson (Hoolahan 68), Meyler (O’Kane 75); McGeady (O’Dowda 75), Hendrick, McClean (McGoldrick 79); Murphy (Long 68).

Diarra's injury could affect Matuidi. Not happy about that.

We'll have to monitor that in the next friendly. Matuidi dropped deeper when Kante came on against Cameroon.

I'm going to wait and see. It's still possible that Kante or Schneiderlin play the holding role.

Probably not. Most likely, it will be Cabaye in the holding role, exactly in the same formation as when Diarra was there. Definitely not Matuidi.

It's because of the technical and most importantly tactical capacities. When they play 4-3-3, the deepest midfielder is not someone to run around like a mad man. He has to keep his position and to put the game in order, both in recuperation and distribution of the ball. Cabaye is there as Diarra's replacement, he was the indisputable starter in that position before he faded at PSG and moved to Palace and Diarra was brought back to life at Marseille. Schneiderlin is now apparently a backup for Cabaye.

Or then, if Deschamps really just wants to play the preferred players Kanté and Matuidi, as if he played fantasy football, then he switches to a 4-2-3-1, but I doubt that. He was so convinced that 4-3-3 is the way to go, I just don't see him changing that plan now because he lost a player. If he does that, it's one more sign he's cracking under the pressure of all these injuries.

And what I wanted to say, if it is Cabaye, as it should be, then Matuidi keeps exactly the position he had when Diarra played. That midfield three has worked fantastically well, it would seem very strange if Deschamps decided to break it up now.

There's no reason kante can't play in their 4-3-3 with matuidi holding. He should be ahead of cabaye in the pecking order

          1. Camp No No
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 6 months ago

Since when has Matuidi been playing the holding role alone? For any team in his life? Even at St.-Étienne he was always there with Perrin, and it was Perrin who was deeper down, the more holding man, while Matuidi roamed up the left side like he does at PSG and France.

There is no single pecking order for all players. Deschamps doubles all posts. Diarra/Cabaye and now Cabaye/Schneiderlin is the double for the deep midfield positon. If he puts Kanté and Matuidi on the pitch at once, either the formation changes, or then he sees that Kanté can be trusted the holding role.

When Deschamps initially brought Kanté up, he said that he sees Kanté rather in the Matuidi role than in the holding role, but there suggested also that Kanté could possibly offer a backup to that holding role as well. But it would present a much more drastic and unpredictable change to the team structure than playing Cabaye there, as it used to be. We'll see what weighs more, but considering that he has found a midfield formula he's happy with, I'd expect him to do the conservative choice and keep the formation as it was.

That's a lot of words but I still think kante will take his place in a 4-3-3 😉

Cheers Camp No No. You've convinced me that Matuidi is still a good pick. Can't see Deschamps messing around with his position too much. His forward runs are a big part of how France play.

Well, Eden, you've got me to change a majority of my team with your posts.

    Sommer (Kozacik)
    Dier Mangala Glik (Dragovic, Denayer)
De Bruyne Ozil Grosicki Alli (Junuzovic)
    Muller Giroud(c) Janko

    Please reassure me lads... :/

I just have two problems with the team

      1)No Spanish defence.
2)Alli will play quite deep. Consider Mak imo.

    Sommer, Kozáčik;
    Sergio Ramos, Juanfran, Hector, Boateng, Giaccherini;
    Draxler, Mak, Stanciu, Junuzović, Dzsudzsák;
    Ronaldo, Bale, Giroud.

    Captaincy = Giroud -> Bale -> Boateng -> Sergio Ramos -> Ronaldo.

    Afternoon all.

Told myself I was having a summer off but after catching up with all the recent articles I seem to have constructed a team!

    Who's the pick's for 4.0m defenders? I need two.

    First draft;

    Hart (Randolph)
    McAuley Taylor Rat (4.0 4.0)
De Bruyne Hamsik Matuidi(c) Rakitic Ozil
    Kane Muller (Long)

That's a very very weak defence. IMO, all the points will be in the defence. I've prioritised it over my attack.

          Alba (£7.0m) - Rodriguez (£6.0m) - Hector (£5.5m) - Mangala (£5.0m) - Dier (£5.0m)

          Atm.

Downgrade Alba, in my opinion. Get an elite defender over Dier.

I'm on Dier(5.0) Mangala (5.0) Dragovic (5.0) Denayer (4.5) Giaccherini (5.0). Feels dirty looking at it, but it's cheap and it does the job.

Very quick 10 minute draft! Doubt I'll run with Hart, but the forward line I like with Shane Long to sub in at some point as plays late on.

Was trying to change Griezman - Nani - Shaqiri....ended up signing Giroud - Lukaku - Shaqiri...is it a better change? Only have 25,5M to attack since i dont want to change the GK, DF and MF....is there any other opinion...really struggling about my attack

Don't like any £7.5m options so Grosicki will probably stay. Mak vs Weiss is still out there of course and I want to wait till I see the French lineup for Mangala 🙂

For me; Alba to Ramos(or Juanfran), Rodriguez to Boateng or maybe upgrade Mangala to Boateng with Alba money.

Milfield looks good, lacks true captain options though, in my opinion.

Thanks for the honest opinion 🙂

We get 5 shots at a captaincy, I don't mind punting on players like Grosicki or Janko.

I'll consider the defensive changes 🙂

Looking at fantasy output, Juanfran's and Alba's value is very similar. There's a slight advantage for Alba, but it's so close your prob better off spending those 1,5 million somewhere else.

    Euro 2016 Mid-Priced Strikers' STATS

Kane vs Giroud vs Shaqiri vs Milik vs Janko.

    GIROUD (8.5)

    Goals + Assists per 90 for France = 0.87
    Excluding Friendlies = 0.66
Fantasy Points per 90 for France = 3.23
    Excluding Friendlies = 2.36

PROS = Easiest first 2 fixtures in the whole tournament.
CONS = I cannot think of any. 😉
(nothing to do with the fact I have Giroud in my team!)

    KANE (8.5)

    Goals + Assists per 90 for England = 0.90
    Excluding Friendlies = 1.93 (!)
Fantasy Points per 90 for England = 3.38
    Excluding Friendlies = 6.95

PROS = Easy group , great stats and is in great form for club and country.
CONS = Small sample size (only 700 minutes) , doubts over England and might share his goals with Vardy/Rooney.

    SHAQIRI (8.0)

    Goals + Assists per 90 for Switzerland = 0.72
    Excluding Friendlies = 0.77
Fantasy Points per 90 for Switzerland = 2.58
    Excluding Friendlies = 2.82

PROS = Plays well for Switzerland in the big tournaments , VERY easy first 2 fixtures , on set pieces.
CONS = Reverse OOP , plays as a RW , poor goal:assist ratio for a forward.

    MILIK (7.5)

    Goals + Assists per 90 for Poland = 1.05
    Excluding Friendlies = 1.45
Fantasy Points per 90 for Poland = 3.67
    Excluding Friendlies = 5.00

PROS = Great stats , easy opening fixture , 4m cheaper than Lewa.
CONS = Reverse OOP , plays as a SS , goal:assist ratio is poor for a forward , flat track bully.

    JANKO (7.0)

    Goals + Assists per 90 for Austria = 0.80
    Excluding Friendlies = 1.14
Fantasy Points per 90 for Austria = 3.10
    Excluding Friendlies = 4.83

PROS = Easy group , main man for a good attacking side , great stats , cheap .
CONS = 31 years old (can he be 100% for all the matches?) , flat track bully.

Should I downgrade my strikeforce? I've got Muller/Lew/Giroud and have 4 nailed midfielders and Rafa Silva. In defence I've got Juanfran/Gilk/Djourou/Denayer/Vrsaljko.
