The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

It somehow seems strange writing up a Leighton Baines Scout Report at this time of the season. Typically, we have to wait till the second half of the campaign before Everton embark on one of those resurgent runs so synonymous with the club under David Moyes but this time round, the Toffees have been quick out the blocks:

Baines, as always, has been one of the chief protagonists. With a clean sheet, assist and five Fantasy Premier League bonus points across his first three Gameweeks, the left-back’s form reflects his side’s surprise start, with Moyes’ men registering wins against United and Villa before a temporary blip at West Brom last Saturday. According to club captain Phil Neville, the Toffees’ fine form is down to a change in pre-season build-up by Moyes – whatever the reason may be, it brings Baines onto our radars ahead of a kind upcoming run of games for the Merseysiders.

Looking at the season ticker, Everton have, arguably, the strongest run of fixtures over the next couple of months, right the way through to Gameweek 13. Investment in the Toffees’ assets looks a definite tactic to consider, then, with (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) all rolling up to Goodison, while trips to the likes of Wigan, QPR and Reading all offer the potential of points.

Pricing also falls in Baines’ favour this time round. The left-back had a relatively average season by his own high standards last term, producing four goals and a couple of assists – bearing in mind he returned five goals and 11 assists in the 2010/11 campaign, it’s fair to say his attacking output took a significant dive. As a result, his starting price dropped from 8.0 last season to 7.0 in FPL, while in the Sky Sports game, his cost of 7.1 looks good value.

Already, we’ve seen Baines’ creativity supply chance after chance for his team mates – indeed, no other player in the Premier League currently matches him for goalscoring opportunities provided. With a share of corner kicks, in addition to being first in line for free-kicks and penalties, he offers far more than just clean sheet potential – with the likes of City and United failing to produce returns at the back, any highly priced defender who offers the potential of attacking returns looks all the more appealing in the current climate. If Nikica Jelavic or Marouane Fellaini can apply the finishing touches to Baines’ consistent left flank delivery, a bandwagon seems almost inevitable.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hiya guys, team is linked, already done Bale to hazard, got 1 FT left.

Just want to know would it be worth it doing DDG > Foster & Zab to baines for a 4 point hit?

doing the DDG > Foster leaves me exactly 7.1 for Baines, suppose i would only need to do it for fear of baines price rising before GW 4, what do people recon? worth it?

    comments appreciated.

I would have a really hard time justifying a hit for 2 defensive transfers. It could pay off, but I don't think it's worth it, even with your fear if losing out on baines.

Final UCL dilemma: need to choose 2 of 3 players:
    Man Utd defender
    Real Madrid defender
    Bayern defender

I currently have Real and Bayern defender, but thinking about switching to a United defender for 1 of them. Already have Persie, Robben, but no Madrid cover(dont know if it is needed with their fixtures, especially a defensive player)

Evans? Hmm that could solve a big problem for me as I could afford all 3, but I really wonder how many games he will get. He could just as well rotate Ferdinand in the PL and miss all CL games.

I'd strongly consider Lambert, not just because he's scored against Man city/utd but also because unlike Graham he kind of needs to score for his team to get points. And Southampton have started with no points in 3 games. You'd imagine if they stand any chance of staying up, he needs to be banging them in. I can see him being a bit of a Charlie Adam. Graham has a luxury of playing for a half decent side who don't need him to score that much to get something from games. If you look at Graham's goals last season, I think maybe 1 of them was a proper 'winner'. The rest are goals scored after the game was practically over.

Interesting (you do veer between good posts and mild WUMing quite a lot don't you?).

I think Lallana and possibly Ramirez could end up taking some of the weight off of Lambert's shoulders though. Even Rodriguez if he gets going.

I don't know it's just not sexy enough for me.

Thanks, but I'm not familiar with WUMing, what does that mean? I would be wary of Lallana and Ramirez stealing the limelight too, but I still rate Lambert over Graham personally for a 6m striker.

People went on and on on here about how well Everton had started but failed to see that WBA's start was just as good (even better imo).

Can't see us not scoring this week so think you're relying on attacking points and the week after I can't see Everton getting anything from Swansea.

Many people here claim to have access to the final truth on this matter. In reality, we don't know. The new guy may be backup for Davies, Davies may be backup for him or they may be job-sharing. Right now I'd say that Davies is sadly unownable for a few gameweeks at least until we see what Laudrup's plan is.

Which 3 to bench from these lot:

    Zabaleta - sto
    Ivanovic - qpr
    Cuellar - LIV
    Demel - nor
    N'Zog - SWA
    Dyer - villa
    Noble - nor

Currently benched in this order - Noble, Zabaleta, Demel.

The big risk there is that I would therefore be backing N'Zogbia to start........would hate a(nother) 1 pointer from him, but if I don't start him now, when will I?

I would like to start him.........the question is, over who though?

Ivanovic has goal threat, Cuellar has Liverpool who are struggling to score, N'Zog has SWA at home and I need to chance him, and Dyer has been on good form.

I also have Graham up front, so logic suggests I could risk dropping him or Dyer. Surely in that choice you've got to play the striker?

So, bench Dyer, and play Zabaleta? (Although I benched Dyer on GW1 and look what happened!)

IMO if you have a defender priced 5.5 or more then you play them regardless, but only over other defenders.
      Dyer (form) is undroppable.
      Bench Noble, Demel NZog imo

    Afternoon all.

I’ve decided that Santi is the signing I want in my FPL team. I’ve decided that Ade has to go as I’m reluctant to lose any of midfield. So what are your thoughts on the following options

    A. Al Ahmadi & Ade > Carzola & Pog (4 point hit)

    B. Al Ahmadi, Ade & S. Taylor > Carzola, Lambert & Clark (8 point hit)

Option B gives me a very strong front 8, and I could get another Newcastle defender back when their injuries sort themselves out.

    Team is

    Jaask, Begovic
    Baines, Jenkinson, Demel, Clyne, *****
    Hazard, HBA, Peinaar, Michu, ****

    DDG / Federici

    Tevez / RVP / Graham

Hazard, Cazorla and Baines are on my radar to buy, but I'm happy giving Bale another week to prove his worth. I'm not too worried about Ivanovic being rotated just yet and also confident DDG will start against Wigan and keep a CS. Watch this space...

For those of us who have kept our Wildcard powder dry, what is the opinion on the next optimal time to use it?

Is there any particular GW that marks a significant shift in fixtures or anything like that, or is it just a case of hold onto it as long as you can and hope for some good DGW action in the second half of the season?

It's a gamble, but after seeing the success of some people who played theirs late in the season, I want to keep hold of mine until as late as possible when there's a monster DGW. Either that or when my team is in absolute tatters through injuries, players out of favour/form etc.

The best time is probably the DGW explosion in 2013. ]

I'm not a big fan of using it in international breaks. The game after the break is always such a lottery and the price rises are not as big as people make out. EG - The big price rises so far this season were between gwk 2-3, not the current break.

I've used mine already btw...but my team was so pants that it was a necessary evil. If I hadn't I'd do all I could to save it until next year's doubles.
