Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

Outstanding article Sir Paulos...will be keeping an eye on Bos's price to ensure I still make a profit from his early season skills.

What do people think about Lampard? is he going to do a RVP on us and catch us all unawares? Chelsea may find a bit of form and he could rake in the points. Would now be the time to invest before this bandwagon gains full momentum, I get the feeling it will only take one more good performance from him then everyone will want him in their team.

    Thoughts?

Definitely worth the investment and it's not like he's being subtle to be honest:

      20, 6, 1, 10, 11

Would hardly say that and 70 points for the season is catching us "all unawares"

An absolute shoe-in for me for the Wolves(H) game, I've lined up my transfers precisely for it. Will most likely (c) him for that as well, as I think Chelsea could go nuts on Wolves, whereas Fulham could make it tight at Arsenal.

Probably deliberate - to be honest there isn't much activity at this stage in an International break anyway - maybe they're updating FPL every few hours rather than the standard 15 mins or so. Activity will pick up again in the middle of next week.

A little off subject. I hope you will forgive this minor rant.

Why in the name of heaven do people take over a shop which produces the most wholesome and simple to cook meals on the face of the planet, and then procede to find 82 different ways of F**KING it up!!!???

I refer of course to Fish & Chips.

No more, I tell you NO MORE!!!! I will cook my own, as soon as I find a suitable domestic size fryer, until then I shall go without.

No more bland, blonde, fat filled, french fry size bits of potato, no more slimey batter surrounding a prawn sized bit of grey something conspiring to send me to an early coronary grave.

The right fat, the right temperature. How F**king hard can they make it?

Please recommend transfers? I'd like to ditch Shawcross and Tiote before they drop...

    Vorm, Ruddy
Taylor S, Taylor, Shorey, Tierney, Shawcross
    Silva, VDV, Mata, Eagles, Tiote
    Agbonlahor, Suarez, Van Persie

    Thanks!

Switch Shaw to Wilk or another nailed on Stoke defender (I'm afraid Wilk isn't nailed on anymore though...) and any money in the bank? Midfield looks awesome, but there isn't much for Tiote's price range. I upgraded Tiote to Sess a couple of weeks ago.

It's an article analyzing the proficiencies and defending/attacking capabilities of each player so FF players can make a more informed gamble on which Chelsea defender to pick up if they so desire. Just like every op ed (with a little bit of analysis) article in the world Yesot, it's relevant to some but certainly not all. No truth in it.

Westwood has replaced Gordon in the pecking order although he's still behind Mignolet. Considering Mignolet is out for some time I'd say Westwood is a very viable option.

    Saurez > Bendy
    Given > Howard

I already have Baines and am thinking of doubling up on Everton's defence. I also have had enough of Saurez and am willing to take a punt on Bendy purely on fixtures...

Against better judgement, Bendy looks good for next four. Howard has the fixtures but Hibbert's an interesting option in the Everton back four if you're looking for cheaper coverage - less secure though.

cheers Rohan / Mark.. I'm going to stick with the doubling up idea as it can't be worse than what has happened YTD with my defence... If it goes wrong I will keep Howard and ditch baines.. I can't get rid of him yet as have had him all year and have been stubbornly sticking with him... That wont last much linger if he doesn't pull his finger out... Interesting what you say about bendy, I've never rated him but for some reason have a feeling with the upcoming fixtures he will score well...

lets hope that he is not. He is not completely to blame for chelseas defensive deficiencies this season but he is culpable along with Mikel more than any other defensive player.

FWIW I also think our fwds need to press more if AVB is going to insist on us playing such a high line.

              pretty similar. great minds eh.

I almost typed Torres and I was convinced he was going to come good before his red card but he was again awful against blackburn and Genk. I still think we should take the money and run if someone would buy him. Still gutted we never got Aguero who we were after for ages before Torres! Aguero and Drogba together would be immense!

                Drogba isn't immense anymore.

From what I saw from the Blackburn game, Torres didn't look too bad. Some nice touches and a couple of excellent passes, obviously the miss will overshadow all that, even though it wasn't that bad.

Did you watch the match? Only saw the highlights, so you're probably in a better position to comment.

Still prepared to keep the faith with him, but my patience with him (which seems to be longer than most) is beginning to run out.

I still love drogba and we look a much better side with him in it and his defensive qualities are unrivalled. I agree he doesnt look as good this season but I wonder if thats because he hasnt had a run of games.
Only saw the highlights of the Blackburn game but watched genk game in full.

I want to like Torres but I just cant. Just the sight of him now gets me angry!

yeh noticed that, hoping he gets a yellow against wolves so he misses the carling cup game against liverpool

aslong as he doesnt get booked next weekend n miss wolves at home it isnt too bad

He's a different animal these days though, and not in a good way. Can't always keep up with the intensity of the game in the middle of midfield, and is forced into making fouls.

applebonkers eluded to it after about two games of the season, and has been proven very much right so far.

if he gets booked in the wolves game he'd then miss the carling cup game. i wonder if he might either take his short off if he scores or do one of those straightforward shirt pulls and "accidently" get his 5th

What, in the Liverpool game next weekend? Surely he'd rather be suspended for the Wolves game in the league, than the Carling Cup game against the scousers?

Either way, hopefully we won't be seeing him taking off his shorts.

Agreed. Wilkinson should have it cemented - Pulis started him on the left vs Bolton with Huth on the right. Eagles ripped Huth apart and Wilkinson was replaced by Higginbotham on the left.

IMO, Wilkinson will start over Huth at RB with Higginbotham contesting left-back with Wilson when he's fit. Huth has gone from number one centre back to bench warmer it appears.

Naylor, Wilko, Brown all match H/A. I'd look at Brown for QPR/Ful/Wol Def. Otherwise, I think you've got something there.

But the 5 defenders have to be grouped 3 and 2 home and away, that would just switch the pairings over so no advantage.

You only lose cash if you sell then buy back. Don't buy him back, especially if you want a cheap Def. Could switch him Ferdinand (QPR) or Riise even.

I just saw from the season ticker, Everton and swansea H/A rotate perfectly.
with a backline consisting of STO,SUN,EVE,SWA,NEW you could have atleast 3 at home for the next 6.
Go for it, but with Jagielka instead of Enrique.

Enrique is a season keeper IMO. Every match he has chances of getting attacking points as a Bonus to add on to the CS chances.

Not many Defender (Walker is one) around 5m offer that.

    Some much needed advice required:

    Current team:

    Given (Ruddy)

    Bos Enrique Wilkinson (Simpson) (Orr)

    Silva VDV Walters Allen (Moses)

    RvP Aguero Suarez

The way that I see it the following need to go Given, Bos, Moses... and potentially Suarez.

Over the next few game weeks what would people's thoughts be on the following:

    Given to Vorm
    Bos to Jones
    Moses to Ramsey

    Any advice greatly received!

they are indeed. Mexico on Nov 11 and Hondurus Nov 14....with flight back 15 he should be back in good time for the next match, but you are right to bring it up. Could get injured, AVB could decide he's too tired. I'm certainly not getting Ivan in this week.

With BOS not playing for Portugal I think he's got a shout of playing myself (I'm not convinced he's on the scrapheap just yet). I know he didn't play the last game but doesnt mean much to me (I think quite a few people might have seen Andy Townsend explaining that he's Sh1t and should be out the door in Jan on Champs League highlights last week and have been convinced by the Blackburn ommission)

he's got a massively unfair stigma attached to him. just because he might not be as good as he personally thinks he is doesn't mean he's not a good striker and can be a good value pick for FPL.
he always gets 90mins, might be on penalties and as well as always having a decent record when he gets starts in the past he currently has got off to almost a goal or assist every game start at sunderland. finally he's only owned 1.2% of people. exploit the stigma
