Chelsea’s trip to Blackburn last week was the final straw for many Fantasy managers. Week after week, we’d endured the defensive failings of Jose Bosingwa in the hope that his attacking returns would prove dividend but a place on the bench at Ewood Park prompted plenty to jump ship.

With clean sheets a rarity almost right across the board, Bosingwa’s forward raids always offered hope. A goal, a couple of assists and 7 bonus points early on kick-started a bandwagon that added 0.8 to his 5.5 starting price but as the gameweeks passed, his returns diminished. No clean sheet since the season opener at Stoke, 10 points in his previous seven appearances, part of a back-four that were swept aside at home by a ruthless Arsenal performance- the wheels had fallen off in spectacular fashion.

Saturday’s game certainly suggests the Portuguese player is no longer a first-choice pick. It seems as if Andre Villas-Boas has come to the same conclusion as the likes of Carlo Ancelotti before him- Bosingwa, for all his attacking merits, weakens the Blues back-four considerably. Branislav Ivanovic moved from the centre to take over- the Serb excelled at right-back last season, producing 4 goals and 5 assists compared to Ashley Cole’s zero goals and 5 assists on the opposite flank.

The installation of Ivanovic at full-back proved an instant success- an assist, clean sheet and 2 bonus points returned 11 Fantasy points and more than doubled his points haul for the season. Bosingwa owners are now on red alert and with a two-week international break now upon on, he’s already slipped in price as the “Transfers Out” rack up.

We take a look at both players’ performances at right-back in the previous two games to ascertain the difference in their respective contributions:

Average Positions

A look at the Chelsea average positions from each game shows Bosingwa (17 above) pushed up slightly higher than Ashley Cole (3) on the opposite flank against Arsenal, with John Obi Mikel (12) in a deep position similar to the left-back’s. While Cole and John Terry (26) stayed close together on the left, the gap between Bosingwa and Ivanovic (2) at centre-half was far greater, with Bosingwa’s forward runs leaving Chelsea exposed all-too-often.

While the Blackburn game (below) shows Ivanovic (2) virtually as high up as Bosingwa was against Arsenal, everything is relative. Here, Mikel (12) is level with the Serb and is closer to Ramires (7) than he was against Arsenal. On the opposite flank, Cole (3) is pushed up far higher than the previous game, as is Frank Lampard (8), with Chelsea using the left flank to better effect this time round.

Passing

A comparison of each player’s passing in the respective games is perhaps surprising. Bosingwa made a total of 47 passes against the Gunners, while Ivanovic produced 63 at Blackburn but 17% of Bosingwa’s came in the defensive third compared to just 7% of Ivanovic’s- with the latter far more defensively secure, you’d perhaps expect it to be the other way around.

Going forward, too, there’s an unexpected outcome- 36% of Ivanovic’s distribution came in the final third, compared to just 21% of Bosingwa’s- as a result, he bettered the Portuguese star’s crosses (5 to 3) and produced double the number of goalscoring chances. Bosingwa’s tendency to drift inside is highlighted by 24% of his passes coming from a more central position, whereas Ivanovic’s greater positioning offers better balance and maintains the team’s shape- only 7% of his distribution was away from the flank, with 2% coming from a corner.

A look at each player’s “Preferred Passing” offers a perfect insight into their respective mind-sets. Against Arsenal, John Obi-Mikel linked up with Bosingwa the least of any of the Blues back-four; he received 7 passes and played 4 to the right-back whereas against Blackburn, Ivanovic interacted with Mikel more than any Chelsea defender, playing 11 passes and receiving 15.

Bosingwa’s attacking outlook saw him make only 1 less pass to Ramires, in the right midfield role, than he played to Mikel- Ivanovic, on the other hand, made just 4 passes to Ramires in comparison to his 11 to Mikel, a clear example of his more cautious approach.

Tackling

The best illustration of each player’s contribution to the Chelsea cause is shown by the number of and, critically, position on the pitch of each of their tackles in the respective games. The comparison highlights the flaws in Bosingwa’s game- he made 10 tackles against Arsenal but only 3 of them came in his own half. Ivanovic’s instant solidity on the right flank and reading of the game is summed up perfectly in the above diagram- he made 14 tackles, with only 3 in the opposition half.

Shots Conceded

Chelsea conceded 13 shots against Arsenal and 12 against Blackburn. Looking at the stats alone, it seems like there was little defensive improvement but closer examination as to where the shots arrived from, shows a substantial difference. At home to the Gunners, Villas-Boas’ side were ripped apart- 12 of those shots were inside the box, with just 1 outside their own penalty box. Away at Blackburn, only 4 of Rovers’ attempts were inside the box, with 8 of the host side’s efforts from distance in comparison.

Clearly, the step up in solidity was marked. Unfortunately for Bosingwa and his Fantasy owners, given the thorough and analytically sharp mind of Villas-Boas, it seems highly unlikely that this will have gone un-noticed.

    ------ Aguero ----- RvP ----- Rooney ------

I dunno... I think my team looks yummy!
But then again, I've felt that way many times so far this season, and it has still turned out to be a disaster.
So, what should I do before next GW? Nothing?

Good but your budget is very much overloaded in attack. Also while Newcastle have been doing well, their fixtures are now a nightmare. Better to have one solid United/Arsenal/City/Chelsea defender for the coming fixtures instead of Rooney, and find United attacking potential elsewhere. (JEvans isn't nailed on by any stretch of the imagination), but I quite like your midfield.
Nani instead of VDV, bale instead of ramsey (you already have RVP) and upgrade Evans to Jones perhaps? On a 3 week plan, if Evans isn't starting. If he is, feel free to keep him!

I get your reasoning, but.. i find it difficult to see any of the "pricy" defenders worth the cost. Jones, yes, or maybe Kompany/Richards... Will think about it tho. Evans has to go soon i guess.
I have my eye on Sess/Drenthe/Brunt too, many nice options in that price range instead of Ramsey.

This probably has been mentioned earlier today but have FPL Price changes stalled?

Is this just TotalFPL price changes or is it on FPL's end?

Will prices rise/fall tonight without notification?

I did my wildcard on monday and I've already been screwed by the lack of price changes monday night.
I sent them an angry email and I'm afraid this is punishment.

Lads, bit of advice re. my team. I have two free transfers. Had a good score of 85pts last GW, but it still needs work IMO.

      Vorm, Kenny

      N.Taylor, Kompany, Enrique, Simpson, Woodgate

      O'Hara, Silva, VDV, Petrov, Dyer

      Rooney, RVP, Adebayor

      No money in the bank.

      is it worth doing:

      Drenthe > Petrov
      Brown > Enrique
      Sess > O'Hara

Bringing in Sess would be for a hit. Got a feeling that would be pointless. Shall I do the other two though?

Don't feel comfortable playing Enrique/Simpson/Naylor alongside woodgate and komp for next GW though, so I wanted to get a 'safer' defender in (if there is such a thing) Tell me it'll be ok 🙁

Anyway, have no £££ to bring in Sess for Petrov, so need to downgrade somewhere? Formica > O'Hara?

I was thinking of wildcarding, but then I realised that I only have problems with Given and Warnock.
It was hardly worth it since I had taken a 4 point hit below.
I transferred out Murphy, Bosingwa and got in Drenthe and Jones.

My question is, if I go on a wildcard spree now does that 4 hit that I confirmed previously, get erased?

          Cheers lads.
I am trying to resist the wild-card temptation, cos my team seems good on paper. It's just picking the right eleven that always snookers me.
I just feel like I don't need the wildcard, its kinda burning a hole in my fpl pocket!
Another wildcard will be given in January and I feel that the first wildcard will be made redundant.
Wish I could sell the wildcard would give me piece of mind!

Hi friends, greetings from across the pond. Curious to get some input on my current dilemma: my team is in a good enough position that I don't think I need to use my WC yet, but I'm still stuck with some notable deadweight in Given (Mr. no matchup is good enough for me!) and Jarvis, so I'll probably take a 4pt hit to rotate those two. Current lineup:

      Vorm
      Richards Raylor ShawX
      Silva VDV Nani Walters
      RVP Addy Sturridge

      Given---Simpson Olsson Jarvis

Given that I can WC in a couple weeks, I just need a keeper who rotates with Vorm for this week and a midfielder who at least has a shot at getting > 2 pts. Have 11.1 to play with, so currently toying with something like Drenthe/Al-Habsi or Howard/Eagles or Brunt/Begovic. What do you guys think?

Or should I just play Vorm and save the 4pt hit. Every time I bench him for someone with a better fixture he goes for 8+ pts anyway!

      Given ->

      a) Vorm - Adv: cheap, on form and enables Dunne -> Jones the following week. Dis: Not great fixtures, doesn't rotate that well with Ruddy
      b) Howard - Adv: Great fixtures and rotates perfectly with Ruddy. Dis: Expensive and prevents Dunne -> Jones the following week
      c) Begovic - Adv: Good fixtures, best team defensively. Dis: Expensive, already have 2 x STK defenders, doesn't rotate that well with Ruddy and prevents Dunne - Jones the following week.

Yeah, I've had him for whole seasons a few times. Not the best fixtures, but he can score against anyone.

He picked a yellow up in the Carling Cup, only shows up as 3 on FPL.

Yep, went under the radar a bit but he got 10 points when Arsenal spanked them. He's a big hitter, think I'll be taking the plunge.

Thinking of swapping him in for Nani when I WC. Why not? He's playing great and you can rotate him out for anyone in the game easy enough. Seems like a great differential.

Depends on the rest of your team.
Personally I wouldn't pick lampard 12m a lot esp with loads of 6m ish options around.
I would say go for a mid price midfielder and save your cash so you can jump on the Hernandez bandwagon when it starts.
Its one of my contingency plans (eventually) to ditch villa defensive players given and warnock, for dirt cheap starters, to get the little pea on the plate.

Have you got Drenthe or Sessesgon or Sinclair?
I think Hernandez will start more from here on in. Especially since Rooney, looks to be playing in midfield. Rooney is also united's most creative midfielder, Wellbeck is inexperienced, Berbatov is flaky and Owen is crocked.

I'm hanging in there on Rooney in the belief that he will be back up top when Utd's midfield are fit again. Young, Cleverley etc. Drenthe has interested me but unproven. Lost patience with Sess early in th season when I had him. Dyer is my throw away midfielder in a 3-4-3 at the moment.

The only 4.1 mid is Shane Ferguson, and he's not playing a game anytime soon, i'd say you're better off downgrading your defence, either Kompany or Phil Jones to a 4.0, which allows you to get a 4.0 instead of a 3.9 as your other def, and a ~6 mil mid to go with it.

The only reason you would get a defender for 3.9 - they were on a shit team to start with and played badly enough/stopped being first choice so that lots of people transferred them out.
Your options would be Caulker (SWA) Lopez (WIG) Orr (QPR) Hanley (BLA) plus a few more who have played 0 minutes this season.
None of them have played more than 90 minutes total over the last 7 gameweeks or so, avoid.

Other than that its not a bad team, i'm not sold on Chico yet, but then i'm preferring Dzeko over him in my WC team and they're both subject to rotation.

I recommend Kompany -> Wilkinson, 5th defender N Taylor maybe? And mid maybe Walters/Sess/Drenthe/ whoever you can afford with value somewhere around 6.0

Good advice Archie, up until Kompany to Wilko. If I was him I would keep Kompany and Jones. Downgrade Enrique to Wilko instead.
Ramsey to Drenthe or Sess (as he already has RVP)

Team value must be pretty low thatasiankid...etc??

        Chelsea- Mata
        Fulham- Zamora
        Newcastle- Cabaye
Stoke- Begovic (apart from last weekend)
        Swansea- Dyer
        Spurs- Modric!!!

            Really?

Personally I'd play Ramsey and Woodgate quite easily between those options.

I can see Arsenal scoring a couple against Norwich. Whether RAmsey is involved in the goals, who knows, but might be good for an assist or something.

And Stoke at home to a newly promoted side vs Liverpool away to Chelsea?

I Think gordon's out for some time and the injuries and bans section says mignolet could be out for months so I think it's a punt you could consider taking.

I think we are safe until the xmas wildcard , making Westwood a good punt , his fixtures are the best of all the cheap goalies.

He has recieved plenty of praise for his performance against man u , there is even talk of him being the new number one , even after the other two regain fitness.

Mingolet out for a couple of months , so at least until we get the xmas wildcard , while Gordon hasnt even resumed training yet , and would only be rushed should westwood prove to be utterly hopeless

Cool. It's between Westwood and Vorm for me - Vorm more secure long term and on form, but Westwood has the fixtures up to the Jan wildcard. I also have Brown though - would this sway you to getting Vorm or Westwood?

Ah fair enough. My other keeper is Ruddy, so the new one would probably play most weeks up to the Jan wildcard. Backline is below - 2 freebies and 0.4m in the bank. What would you do? I'm looking at Given & Dunne -> Westwood/Vorm & P Jones

            Given, Ruddy
            Dunne, Simpson, Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate
