With template midfields and forward lines now commonplace, recent goals from Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Joleon Lescott demonstrated the value of points from our defenders as a method of boosting Fantasy ranks.

In this latest article for Members, we use Opta data and our own ICT Threat scores to examine the defenders who have presented the most potent threat so far, whilst discussing any worthy options who are potentially due improved returns before the season is out.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So what will the bidding on RVP start at then? Torresesque fee? Truth is, they haven't really got anybody else worth much.

Both clubs from Manchester would have performed better than this.

City were the best despite going out.
Had by far the toughest group and would beaten that Milan side cos City can actually defend (Spurs would have beaten them too)

        Arsenal are poor
        United are ok
        Chelsea are inconsistent and unpredictable
City and Spurs are actually good

Point being that best teams from the PL arent in the CL for different reasons. City got caught by a tough group, Spurs pipped to qualify for it and United out cos of complacency and (arguably) injuries...

At the end of the day, there are 16 teams in the UCL. You can say what you want about tough group but Utd and City are not in the competition. Milan are higher than Napoli in Serie A, City couldnt beat Napoli so therefore City would have lost to Milan? Cant assume anything.

That is a preposterous thing to say Halnone.

Maybe they would, but because they performed worse than Arsenal in the group stages they lost the right to have a try. It's very simple and United & City fans should look at their own teams instead of saying that they probably would have done better than Arsenal.

The Champions League is a cup tournament, it's not there to serve as an almighty or accurate reflection of English football.

Yeah, this will be the conclusion we'll read everywhere tomorrow.

What you're saying is right though, it might just be a blip and next year the English teams might be back doing great again.

My personal feeling still is that any previous Premiership winner of the last 10 years would've run away with this season already, but I can't back that up very well for obvious reasons.

      Blip.

Utd will learn from this year, Fergie will want one last crack at the CL possibly?
City will probably not get a hard group on paper like this year.
Spurs next season will be an unknown, players and manager wise.
4th place - Arsenal and Chelsea have CL exp. but on decline it seems...for now.

As long as ENG has 4 CL places, we'll be fine, imagine having only 3....?

Ridiculous situation. Germany get the 4th spot because Uefa's rankings give equal weight to performance in the Europa League. With the exception of Bayern making one final (which they lost to an Italian team) German clubs have done nothing in the CL.

These things often go in cycles. Serie A dominated in the 90s and then went into decline though things are improving now. The PL had its period of dominance (only won 2 CL in the time though) and now Spain are on top.

The top clubs in England are simply not as strong as they were. Players that got them to CL semis and finals are past their prime and debt has become a problem.

This has happened a few times in the past but I don't think it should reflect on the PL that much. So if City, United, Spurs and Chelsea all get to the last 16 next season it's the best league again. There is not alot of substance to it. Just happens from time to time and shouldn't reflect poorly on a league.

There priorities seem to be the premier league. United got knocked out because they didn't take the group stages serious enough. It looks bad on English football but the premier league is very physically demanding and it vital for teams to earn the UCL spots. But when a league has only one or two world class teams (spain and italy) they amount a very large number of supporters and hence more money, putting them in a strong position. And less league league pressure allows them to go all out in the UCL.

United have blooded a number of new players this year in the Champions League. Welbeck, Cleverley, Young, Jones, De Gea, Smalling. Basically Fergie took a few chances and it didn't pay off.

          Absolute rubbish.

Typical boring answer. I like seeing Bournemouth do well and dont want Pompey to go bust. A lot of fans feel the same.

Listen to the actual commentary. It's laughable.

He commentates on five live? He did west ham saints and saints milwall.

I really don't care for the whole Pompey rivalry if I'm honest. Just think that an employee of the bbc shouldn't show bias and a clear hatred of a team
        He commentates on

I heard some of his summarising on that match (WH). I didn't notice any hatred but hey-ho.

Have to disagree - as much as he is a skate, he is incredibly positive towards us, ergo he is an excllent commentator. In fact, so much so I wonder if he taking the michael sometimes...

Love last night's chant "Football - you used to play football! You used to play football, you used to play football."

Brum look the team to beat at the minute if I'm frank (don't call me Shirley), but keepin' the faith.

P.S. For scouts of all other teams; We have no good players left in our academy so please don't come down to Marchwood to take a look - ta.

If you were RVP would you stay at Arsenal?

As a neutral, I see Arsenal very much at a crossroads. Either the club continue the way they are, in steady decline and RVP leaves in the summer or the club back the manager with funds to revamp this squad.

If Wenger doesn't want to spend the money, I'm sure someone else will. If he's too short sighted to see that a major overhaul is needed then I think it's time to say thank you & good night.

No passion, no fight and no desire in that squad tonight - it's time for change.

If he's still there at the start of next season, I'd be astounded.

+1 Had an Arse fan round to watch the match tonight and unless they take some action now, I can't see him staying.

If I wer RVP, probably not.
It would be a tough decision after spending so many years there but (much like Henry) probably leave for the better chance of winning trophies.

Regarding Wenger, I think he's created a problem for himself now in that (even if he was given the money) he cant even seem to 'attract' the players needed.
He should have brought in some big names after the 2006 final....

I think RVP is in a tough position. In my opinion he is one of the best strikers in the world but he's at a club that really aren't doing him justice right now. You can only carry a team for so long. On the flipside, he probably doesn't want to abandon his team, he is their leader after all and is extremely important to the morale of the team. He has been showing more frustration with Wenger at times this season (rightfully so in some cases). I think Wenger does need to make some changes, an overhaul is needed definitely. Will he make the changes though? I'd say he can be a stubborn man (as most of us have the potential to be the only difference is he's constantly under the microscope).

Personally, even as a United supporter, I'd be sad to see RVP leave Arsenal as he really is their defining player. I'd get over it when we welcomed him to Old Trafford though 😉

Almost impossible to find a Van Persie replacement. Therefore if RVP leaves, I would see it very likely that Wenger goes as well

Anyone in here know their Italian football?

I'm wondering if Nagatomo still starts for Inter or what way is Ranieri using him these days.

I can sub him in for someond else but dont want to do it if he'll likely be on the bench - cheers
