Across the chest of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel’s heavily tattooed body is the Latin slogan, “veni, vidi, vici,” which roughly translates as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” It is a philosophy that typifies his performances at either end of the pitch, with the Slovakian international building up a solid reputation as a fearless defender who offers an added goal threat.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in January 2008 from Zenit Saint Petersburg, Liverpool fans quickly took to Skrtel’s combative approach, naming him man of the match in his first Merseyside derby via the team’s official website.

During the 2008-09 season, he had effectively displaced Daniel Agger as Jamie Carragher’s defensive partner but injuries cut that campaign, and the following one, short. Indeed, it was only last term that Skrtel truly cemented his place as Liverpool’s most valued centreback, when he played every minute of the season.

After missing the first two games of the current campaign due to a calf injury, the 27-year old’s season kicked off in style in Gameweek 3, as Skrtel grabbed a goal and a couple of bonus points at Bolton, returning a 10 point Fantasy haul. Skrtel’s other goal this season came away at Aston Villa in Gameweek 16, when a clean sheet and three bonus points earned him 15 points, his second double digit points score of the season. A goal in last month’s Carling Cup final served as further reminder of his attacking prowess and this season he has also emerged as one of the top performing defenders in terms of goal attempts, supplementing his tally with nine clean sheets and seven bonus points.

With Liverpool’s season dogged by controversy and poor attacking form, investment in their players has been limited so far. Currently the ninth best defender in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points right now with a total of 95, Skrtel is the second top outfield player for the Reds, a single point behind 8.5 priced Charlie Adam’s 96.

Owned by just 5.9% of managers, his initial value of 6.0 has risen by a mere 0.2 since the start of the season but that looks set to change, though, with the upcoming double gameweek 28 seeing Liverpool travel to Sunderland before playing host to Everton.

Indeed, a look at the Reds’ fixtures over the final third of the season from Gameweek 29 onwards (qpr, WIG, new, AVL, bla, FUL, WBA, nor, CHE, swa) has, arguably, just two tricky games- a Gameweek 31 trip to Newcastle and the home match against Chelsea in Gameweek 37. Those Fantasy managers who draft Skrtel in ahead of next week, then, could conceivably play the centre half in virtually all of his side’s remaining matches as Kenny Dalglish attempts to steer his side to a vital fourth place finish.

Nani looked pretty good against Poland, very selfish, as usual, but with some pretty good details, I predict a Valencia drop in returns once Young is back too.

When Young and Valencia were back at the around the same time it was Valencia who was getting the starts and Young being rotated with Nani until he was injured again.

I would say Valencia is as safe as you get in the United midfield from next week on, in fact, Giggs is pretty "safe" at the minute too and chipping in, but we all know the legend is like 103 so he will get 3/4 games, and maybe 2/4 if the fixtures are kind.

Agree on Giggs, but don´t agree on that rotation again... I believe Valencia and Young will fight for a place as Nani will explode becoming undropable... might be wrong though.

I've already lost 0.4 on valencia so I might as well keep. I wish he'd have been involved this weekend tho so they could take that bloody red flag off him, hate losing money but I suppose it doesn't matter too much if I want him in the long run.

Nani's hardly been rotated when available, he's only missed two PL games when fit and came on both times.

Nani and Young were first choice at the start of the season, before the latter got injured and Valencia came in and cemented his place on the right.

I expect Valencia and Nani will get the nod more often than not when all are available.

Any comments for this GW, or am I all set?

    Al Habsi
    Senderos – Enrique – Santon
    Sessegnon – Silva – Dempsey – Walters
    RVP – Aguero – Ba

    Sorensen – Evans – Caulker – Valencia

Got 1FT if needs be, but ideally was going to hold for next GW and have 2FT to manouvre Rooney in.

Last time they played Hughes and Hangeland and Senderos didn't get off the bench. They kept a clean sheet and Hughes got 2 BPs so while I didn't see the match, I'm guessing Hughes played well and Senderos won't be back in this week.

Unless Kelly misses out, then Hughes - Senderos - Hangeland - Risse is looking likely

Hi all, this is how I have the boys set up:

    Sorensen,
    Richards, Huth, Kelly,
    Dempsey, Bale, Silva (vc), Moses,
    Ba (c), Dzeko, RVP
    (Linde, Sess, Enrique, BAE)

I am grappling with a number of dilemmas, any help on any of the below would be greatly appreciated:

    1. Keeper change: I was going to go Linde to Krul, but as Beg is a doubt, do I hold off until next week (when I have multiple transfers planned, so this would effectively save me 4 points) and take the risk Sorensen might play.

    2. Captain choice - is Ba the best bet out of those - I think people will steer away from giving him the armband as he drew a blank last time out, but with Sunderland shipping 4 goals in the last away game, he could go crazy.

    3. Are my subs correct and in the right order or do I bring Sess in for another mid or play BAE ahead of Enrique.

Frankly I'd say it's bollocks, Enrique hasn't been in quite the same form as early season, but there's no chance of him being dropped, he missed the spurs game through injury and that's it.

Kelly is competing with Johnson for starts, Aurelio - who hasn't played all season - is competing with Enrique.

    A. Jarvis in for Valencia

    B. Pilkington in for Valencia

    C. Mc Lean in for Sessegnon

Which one looks best? If any?

Basically, I'm trying to save at least 2 million on a midfielder..

Don't know whether to play Senderos or Tawio this GW. Is it better to play Senderos and let Tawio come in if he doesn't play because surely Fulham's chances of keeping a clean sheet are better?

    FFS UCL Group G - GW26 Review

    Apoel Nicosia
    points: 42 + 4 = 46
    transfers: 0
    captain: Ba (Kun)

    Zenit
    points: 51
    transfers: 0
    captain: Kun (Ba)

Archie, Apoel's latest coach, has a lot of work to do after a nightmare home fixture. He was lucky enough to put 10 out with a completely non playing bench and keepers. The captain's choice was awry (easy to say that from here) and Simpson's assist was about the only bright thing here. Scoring an underwhleming 42, Archie is struggling to stay in the top 100k and we mush hope he gets the time and the funds to turn this around. ILF, the winning manager, not only got his captain choice right, he took a risk to play the Ox (which didn't pay off) and put in Shawcross (which certainly did). There's more in the tank here, with Mignolet's points not missed at all. The whole of Group G remains very tight. Given that no transfers were made this week, both teams should have options looking ahead to GW 27

    Porto
    points: 50 + 4 = 54
    transfers: 1
    captain: Kun (Ba)

    Shaktar Donetsk
    points: 38
    transfers: 1
    captain: Ba (Kun)

Pratik's Porto can look to a job well done and a home win under the belt. In the other dugout, Fuzzy Czarbles will reflect on chastening introduction to the elite European competition. His ragged defense was never really going to pass muster and the bench was of little use. Fuzzy will be determined not to allow a repeat of this performance at home and it looks like this team may need freshening. A big shout to Pratik's inclusion of the maligned Cahill, whose 6 points will have provided the icing on his delicious Ukranian pudding.
