It is hard to believe Thomas Vermaelen is a defender by trade, such is the frequency in which he appears in opposition penalty boxes. With his surging runs up the field and set piece threat, the Arsenal defender exhibits a level of attacking skill that leaves many designated forwards in the shade. With this in mind, it’s no surprise to see him topping the defender goal scoring charts, having notched five times already this term.

Finding the net hasn’t always been a facet of the Belgian international’s career, however. A product of the Ajax’s famed youth academy, he has notched 24 career goals since making his first team debut for the Dutch club in 2004, though half of these have come since joining Arsenal in 2009. It is no wonder he is referred to as the Gunners’ second best striker after Robin Van Persie, although on paper this season, he is the fourth most clinical in terms of goals scored.

Despite missing nine games this term through injury and suspension, Vermaelen has still managed to accrue 115 points and is the sixth best defender in terms of total points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Goals have undoubtedly helped him achieve this, with four double-figure returns and 13 bonus points to his name already. Among his most recent hauls was a goal and maximum bonus points in Arsenal’s Gameweek 29 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

In recent weeks a resurgent Arsenal have tightened up markedly at the back, racking up four clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks. Vermaelen’s influence in the Gunners’ backline is obvious; in the 23 games he has started, they have returned 10 clean sheets but without Vermaelen in the first XI, Arsenal have chalked up just two clean sheets in 10 matches; a drop from 43% to 20%.

Crucially for those Fantasy managers scrabbling around to get a team together for the problematic Gameweek 34, Vermaelen is set to host Wigan this Monday. The recent improvement in form for the relegation-threatened Lancashire side will not worry Vermaelen, though; Arsenal’s Gameweek 14 clash away to Wigan was the scene of a 16 point haul for the centre-half, his biggest of the season so far.

The 7.0 priced defender then faces ( CHE, sto, NOR, wba) over the last four fixtures of the season and, with considerable potential to accrue points at both ends of the pitch, Vermaelen seems well-placed to pick up the points as Arsenal look to secure an automatic Champions League spot in the race for third with north London rivals Spurs.

I thought of Lichaj but he is too big a risk for this GW - he could get negattive points against Man U. I went for Kilgannon instead - easy game this week (assuming he plays) and he is so cheap he can sit on the bench until the end of the season.

My main rival in my mini league has done 3 transfers meaning he will field 11 players this GW. One of them is Torres --> Aguero. My team at the moment consists of these 10 players:

    Vorm
    Evans - Kompany - Caulker
    Valencia - Walcott - Sessegnon - Siggy
    RvP - Rooney

Bench: Schwarzer, Kelly, BAE, Dempsey, Cisse

I'm leading my mini league by 25 points. Have 1 free transfer. Should I:

    A) Kelly --> McAuley (he has McAuley)/ Sunderland defender.
    B) Keep as is and kill him in GW36.

    Thanks!

dont get a defender when you can play 3 already imo.
you probably dont want to get rid of demps/cisse as you'll just be bringing them back in, i think im going to go with 10 this week & save 1 ft (could change tho)

Yeah, that was my plan. But since my rival has done 3 and taken a -4 point hit, I think I can afford to use my last free transfer on a defender, and then take a hit to do my plan for GW36. My rival is probably going to take a lot of hits for GW36.

Anyone else got the feeling that Rooney's going to unleash his midweek anger upon the unfortunate Villa?

yeah, the main thing that's throwing in an air of uncertainty for me is Villa look pretty awful at the moment, and Wigan on the other hand don't look that bad

    Decision decisions.
Don't normally do this, got 10 this week, 1 ft
    1.9m in bank

    Mignolet (Schwarzer)
    Caulker Evans Verm (Shotton, Enrique)
    Siggy Valencia Walcott Surman (Dempsey)
    RVP(c) Rooney (Cisse)

    Which is best?
    A) Save transfer, play 10, bring in at least two DGW players
    B) Shotton out for Turner
    C) Dempsey out for Sess, then swap back (only lose 0.1m)

Genuinely can't decide, currently thinking NOT B, advice would be appreciated!

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I'm going Aguero, for a reason yet to be given to you.

Strongly considering Bale > Silva to give me 11 players, would give me Silva in GW35 against Wolves as well. Then well probably transfer him out for Bale/Dempsey/Pienaar in GW36. Thoughts?

which team do people think dempsey would be suited best for out of the "big clubs". i think he'd be ideal for arsenal

He could help Chelsea have even less width so I'd say them.

    What should I do guys?

    Vorm
    Evans - X - X
    Walcott - Siggy - X - X - X
    Rooney - RVP - X

Bogdan, Shotton, Sanderos, Skrtel, Cahill, Demps, Bale.

Too many blanks. I have 2 FT and 1.0 in bank. Any recommendations, keeping the DGW in mind? Don't mind to take a -4.

    Cheers.

Cahill & Skrtl out for me. Verm/Sagna/Lescott/Komp. I'd lean towards one Arsenal & one City.

would say get rid of senderos for a sunderland/wba defender for sure as you won't want him back for the double. Looking at your team you have valencia as well...maybe go for Bale to Sess and look to get him in for Walcott in 36.
