Zlatan Ibrahimovic gets amongst the goals but itโ€™s Andrei Shevchenko who steals the headlines by bagging a brace as Ukraine see off Sweden. England and France play out a stalemate earlier in the day, with Man City pair Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri both finding the net as Laurent Blancโ€™s side extend their unbeaten run to 22 games:

England 1 France 1
Roy Hodgson saw his side concede for the first time since taking charge but, despite Franceโ€™s domination, managed to scrape thanks to a resilient defensive display. Joleon Lescott will no doubt be on plenty Fantasy radars after his opener against Laurent Blancโ€™s side โ€“ priced at 5.5 in the McDonaldโ€™s game, he offers the cheapest route into Englandโ€™s backline ahead of the clashes with Sweden and Ukraine.

Hodgsonโ€™s decision to opt for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left of midfield instead of Stewart Downing will also have Fantasy managers on alert. Priced at 6.0 in the McDonaldโ€™s game and with just 2.8% ownership, the Arsenal youngster is an intriguing proposition but itโ€™s perhaps debatable whether he will keep his starting role when Wayne Rooneyโ€™s suspension finishes ahead of Matchday 3. Thereโ€™s every chance Rooney could be partnered by Danny Welbeck up front for the game against Ukraine, with Ashley Young possibly moving out to the left at Oxlade-Chamberlainโ€™s expense. Englandโ€™s midfield work-rate helped Steven Gerrard, James Milner and Scott Parker all pick up an extra point apiece due to the recovered balls rule, with the Liverpool skipperโ€™s assist for Lescottโ€™s goal helping him to a six point return.

Laurent Blancโ€™s starting XI was as expected. Mathieu Debuchy got the nod at right-back, while Alou Diarra started in the defensive central midfield role due to Yann Mโ€™Vilaโ€™s recent injury. The latter was fit enough to be handed a role on the bench, however, suggesting he may well come into contention for Fridayโ€™s showdown with Ukraine.

Elsewhere, Samir Nasri was the standout Fantasy performer in Blancโ€™s front three. Coming in at 8.5 in the McDonaldโ€™s game, the City man is 1.0 cheaper than both Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery and has just 6.8% ownership โ€“ his goal just before half-time helped him to an eight point haul, while Ribery returned five points for providing the assist. Nasri also created eight goalscoring opportunities for his team mates โ€“ more than any French player โ€“ while Benzema managed six attempts on goal; encouraging for his Fantasy owners ahead of the upcoming couple of matches.

Ukraine 2 Sweden 1
The later game followed the script of the previous three days. All four of the 7.45pm kick-offs in Matchday 1 resulted in victories, whereas three of the four early matches produced draws, with teams a little more tentative in the group openers. Oleg Blokhinโ€™s only surprise was the selection of Andrei Shevchenko up front โ€“ the former Milan man had started the last three friendlies on the bench and was hampered with injuries earlier in the year. Shevchenko vindicated his managerโ€™s decision by inspiring the co-hostsโ€™ comeback and grabbing both his sideโ€™s goals โ€“ priced at 7.0 and with a mere 2.2% ownership he proved an inspired Matchday 1 choice, with a 10 point return showing we should never write him off.

Site favourites Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka also played their part, providing an assist apiece. The latter also looked a lively goal threat and managed five attempts at goal; priced at 5.5 compared to Yarmolenkoโ€™s 7.0, heโ€™s a decent mid-price alternative for those Fantasy managers reluctant to splash the cash and, with 0.9% ownership, he also has a share of set-piece duties in the bag.

Erik Hamren picked Andreas Granqvist ahead of Jonas Olsson in the heart of Sweden’s defence, with Martin Olsson slotting in at left-back. Both the latter and Granqvist come in at 4.0 in the McDonaldโ€™s game but with a single clean sheet in their last nine, the Swedes will hardly inspire confidence in Fantasy managers ahead of the remaining two games.

Rasmus Elm was handed a slot in central midfield, while Ola Toivonen โ€“ who had played up front in the recent friendly win over Serbia โ€“ moved to the left flank after Markus Rosenberg recovered from injury to lead the line. Kim Kallstrom rewarded his 2.7% owners by providing the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovicโ€™s opener and the Milan man can consider himself unlucky to be on the losing side after a strong performance โ€“ he managed four goal attempts and created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates. With Sweden’s schedule now looking far from favourable, though, 8.0 priced Ibrahimovic’s 24.6% of owners have a tricky decision to make, with many deciding to wield wildcards in order to freshen up their frontlines ahead of the Matchday 2 kick-off later on today.

    WC team:

    Chalkias, Andersen
    Debuchy, Lescott, Jacobsen, Limbersky, Willems
    Mandzukic, Iniesta, Shirokov, Dzagoev, Nasri
    Lewandowski, Ronaldo, Silva

Will probably wait until teams announced at half 4 for Limbersky but what do people think?

    rrepost from last page

    RMWC team draft:

    going a bit different here:

    Chalkias—Hart

    chiellini—Jacobsen—Debuchy—Lescott—Alba

    Kuba—Sneijder—Ribery—Iniesta—Zimling

    Lewandowski—Salpingidis—Cassano

Cant see the value in CR7 so havent gone for him and as u can see no russians since i really believe the home crowd will help push Poland

Didnt want any German players in case they beat Netherlands and will rotate last game

Jacobsen and Zimling are obviously bargain buys

is salpingidis worth a punt? should i downgrade chiellini to maggio? and use that 0.5 to upgrade elsewhere?

Captain choices are Lewandowski,Sneijder, Iniesta/Cassano and Ribery

    Some team news:

Andrea Barzagli joined an #Italy training session today for 1st time since his injury. He is expected to be fit to face Ireland on Monday

Paulo Bento just confirmed that Hélder Postiga will retain his place for #DENPOR tomorrow, so Nélson Oliveira will look to impact from bench

No idea, but i'd suspect De Rossi will move out of defence into midfield. Bonucci, Barzagli and Chiellini as the 3 CB's and Maggio/Giacherrini wing backs.

Jsk1 - I agree with you on Lewandowski and Poland for that matter. They looked really lacking in quality throughout. They only look dangerous down the right with the Dortmund trio of Piszczek, Kuba and Lewandowski but they will have far more to contend with in Russia tonight. I don't have any Polish players in my WC.

    Gentleman,

I'm doing rather well so far. I'm in 4th Overall ๐Ÿ˜€

I'm really struggling with whether to wildcard now or not. Here's my team:

    ฤŒech /Andersen

    Lescott Granqvist Hummels Zhirkov Debuchy
    Dzagoev Sneijder Konoplyanka Mandลพukiฤ‡ Yarmolenko
    Van Persie Gomez Jelaviฤ‡

Thoughts are just bring in 1 player. I'd like Fabregas but am loath to let go of Sneijder. Ronaldo seems a good bet on paper but he has that habit of disappointing in big games. Cassano seems a popular pick, but I think Billics Croatia have something about them.. !

Jonty. I'm on for a while. Holland will be looking to make up for a pretty meh performance in the 1st match up. Me and Flynn both scored consistently with 45 each, but we were well beaten by denmark.

Things could have been so different, as my earlier drafts had st ledger, lescott, lewandowski and dzagoev as captain. Oh well. Hopefully all of the bad luck will turn to good for this win or go home clash. How are you and camzy shaping up?

We got through by the skin of our teeth...if Kono had got another assist it would have been curtains for the Germans.

We are all set...I think. Our teams look good...but I said that last week and didn't do that great.

Should be close....you realise its a local derby as well, as ILF lives round the corner from my parents in Brighton.

You should have your Mum pop in and do a couple of point hit transfers while he's out for milk and bacon

        Hello Tointon 1.

Am just worried about defensive rotation if Russia win tonight. Might get that Coentrao bloke instead.
