Only a few hours after announcing the departure of James Collins to West Ham, Paul Lambert moved to boost his defensive options with the capture of Dutchman Ron Vlaar from Feyenoord. The centre-half makes his way to Villa Park on a three-year deal and is the fourth player to arrive this summer, following the acquisitions of Brett Holman, Matthew Lowton and Karim El Ahmadi, as the former Norwich boss continues to restructure his first-team squad:

Having been linked with Vlaar for a number of weeks, Lambert was clearly delighted to finally clinch the 27-year-old’s signature. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, the Aston Villa boss described the Dutchman as a “proper playerâ€, before going on to say:

Ron is a really good defender and he has a wealth of experience for both Holland and a big football club in Feyenoord, so I’m delighted we have got him here to Villa. I like the way the guy wants to do well. He’s hungry and he wants to succeed. He’s also a really good, strong defender and hopefully we will get the benefit of him in our team…He’s captained Feyenoord and he’s been in the Dutch international set-up and was part of the Euros. He’ll bring something to the club, no doubt about it.

The Statistics

Vlaar began his career with Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, signing a five-year youth contract with the club at the age of 17. Making his debut in the 2004-05 campaign, he managed just 10 appearances under Louis Van Gaal over a couple of seasons, however. With plenty of suitors – including Ajax and Tottenham – circling for his signature, Vlaar claimed his manager refused to play him unless he penned a full-time contract – as a result, he opted to leave and signed for Feyenoord in December 2005.

Over the course of his five-and-a-half seasons with the club, Vlaar’s game time has been somewhat curtailed by injury. Twice, he has succumbed to cruciate ligament damage, while foot and knee problems have also blighted his career. He has, however, missed only 10 league matches over the past three campaigns and was an ever-present last season, skippering his side to second in the Eredivisie and ensuring Champions League football for the season ahead. In total, he featured 126 times for the Dutch outfit, scoring eight goals and providing five assists. Despite several call-ups to the international set-up, Vlaar has struggled to break into the Holland starting line-up – to date, he has featured just seven times for his national side, notching a single goal.

The Prospects

Fantasy managers will be more than a little wary of investing in Villa’s defence, given how detrimental Lambert’s penchant for attacking football was to Norwich’s backline last time round. While there’s no denying the Canaries impressed offensively – only the top six scored more than their 52 goals – at the back, they were abysmal. Only the three relegated sides conceded more than their 66 goals and, with Norwich failing to register a single away clean sheet all season, they received minimal defensive investment. Darren Bent has already revealed Lambert intends to maintain his approach this season, suggesting Villa could well be a frustrating proposition at the back next term.

So far, both James Collins and Carlos Cuellar have departed as Lambert looks to rebuild and with Richard Dunne now sidelined for six-to-eight weeks with a groin injury, Villa’s central defensive options are suddenly narrowed down, making Vlaar a key figure at the back already. Given how highly he rates the Dutchman, it may well be that Lambert sees the 6 foot 2 stopper as the cornerstone of his new-look defence – perhaps a suggestion that his game time will be assured. Certainly, Fantasy managers will be hoping for far less rotation than we were used to with Norwich last season – another reason why the Canaries were such a frustrating investment.

The new boy has yet to be added to the Fantasy games but a price of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, bearing in mind both Collins and Richard Dunne were given this valuation when the prices were revealed earlier this month. With regards to the Sky Sports game, the afore-mentioned pair have been priced at 5.3 and 5.4 and a similar outcomes seems likely. At present, Ciaran Clark is one to watch as a possible partner for Vlaar in the heart of defence and comes in at 4.5 in FPL, while Enda Stevens has impressed at left-back in recent pre-season friendlies; the latter is just 4.0 in FPL and could potentially be a bargain, depending on Lambert’s first-team thoughts for the season ahead.

Certainly, the opening schedule has been more than kind to Villa. With home games against (EVE, SWA, WBA) and trips to (whm, new, sot) the potential to pick up the Fantasy points is obvious. While the likes of Darren Bent and Charles N’Zogbia could be in line to prosper, the jury may be out on Vlaar until we see whether Lambert can strike a better balance between defence and attack this time round.

Lambert's move to Villa and Hughton's move to Norwich make the Villa attack and Norwich defence potentially great value because the pricings are wrong. I have been watching to confirm if the changes were happening as expected and I've seen enough to take the punt now on both.

For Villa, Lambert's recent interview suggests Ireland is a key player for him. Could be a massive value prospect at 5.5 in the hole. N'Zogbia on the wing was the most tempting for me but he does not sound so big in his thinking. And what about Holman?

For Norwich, Tierney is the most tempting... Russell Martin anyone?

Have you got a link to this interview? Ireland at 5.5 could be useful when Noble and/or Maloney fail.

Tierney's crossing stats were pretty decent last season though I'm not sure on his gametime. I'm quite fond of Russell Martin, mainly because I profited on getting him in for Vermaelen GW38 last season for a hit 😎

Ireland burnt me so badly last season I don't know if I can trust him again, and with the Rotatonator in charge I'm even more sceptical. Martin is probably a better prospect for points but I'm not sure if he is .5 better 😕

I'm not so sure about them this year. Cracking opening games, you're right but are they gunna keep as much possession this season under Laudrup? If not then I think they'll concede a lot more and even with their sweet opening fixtures, I can't see more than 1 or 2 CS's happening for them.

Price is the problem. Sir Chesney and Friedel cost the same, DDG 0.5m more. A Swansea defender for 5m compares more favourably to the cost of defenders from the top teams.

I have that partnership for my 5th midfield spot. As I see it as long as one of them play they have food enough fixtures to support the others (and see if another 4.5m-5.5m option appears). Could be cracking differentials; More potentially explosive than malony/noble; massive differentials.

It really depends on your other 3 midfielders. If you have 3 players which you are confident will return good points then you can gamble on the other spot. Both hold an element of risk (but no more so than Maloney). As said above you only need one to start and I believe both will finish with a better points per game record than Noble.

Apologies if already posted by Petric has bagged again today. Kacaniklic is also starting and has scored, appears to be above Frei in the pecking order for us. He also has (I don't have the stats to hand) a very impressive assist to game ratio from his loan spell at Watford last year. If Dempsey stays he'll probably be behind him & Duff but I'm tempted at 4.5

I’m trying to decide between Hangeland and 4.5 defender (Fabio spring to mind)

I like to play 3-4-3, therefore 1 mid on the bench

It’s looking like Noble/Guthrie will be on the bench most weeks, so my rambling thoughts are

    1) Fabio/Cuellar + upgrade my midfield with the 0.5m (currently looking at Bale, Valencia, Noble, Pienaar, Guthrie)

    2) Repalce Hangeland with 4.5m def to then save the 0.5m in the bank

    3) Keep Hangeland and Guthrie

    What would everybody recommend?

I could do Friedel, Federici and Fonte to Green, Davis and Collocini.

            Very tempting indeed.

I was going by a rotation spreadsheet but you're right they don't rotate particularly well. I may switch Davis to Jussi then although i have little hope for West Ham's CSs.

I was originally taking a punt on Pog for his DGW and the planned on getting Graham in for
GW2. I now fancy a punt on Petric home to Norwich but my problem is that I still want Graham for his decent fixtures (two home) rather than Petric's away games. Would it be weird to get Petrix and then switch to Graham even if Petric does well? Baring in mind I plan on using my WC after GW3 so I can get whoever looks to be the better bet then...

I always prefer to use it early because it helps build value and get players in who are doing well. We get another one in January anyway which always does to the end of the season so I'm happy to play to use it early, although if I start out great I can wait.

After getting a total of 0 clean sheets from owning Chelsea defenders for about a third of last season I'm sticking to one at the back.

Preseason results should be taken with a pint of salt. Do you really think a defence that performed so well against the best team in the world is really no good after a few meaning less friendlies?

Most are rotating defenders, so it depends on your others. If not, Fabio, Cuellar, Hughes maybe?

Any thoughts on this line-up please?

    Cech
    Baines / Hangeland / Ridgewell
    Silva / Bale / Sessegnon / Ireland
    Torres / Bent / Petric

    Henderson / Guthrie / Nelsen / Cuellar

2.0m for the standard Torres to Rooney

Ridgewell & Cuellar on H/A rotation

Should I swap Bale to Siggy to afford Cech to Hart GW3?

Song to a 6.5m midfielder that will score goals. Michu looks a good punt with Swansea's fixtures.

Song had a lot of assists last season. i dont think hes that defensive at all.
All depends on van parsie tho so it could be changed b4 the start of the season.

      steven peanuts maybe?

Michu is a punt. I dont know anything about him. possibly you could inform me more?

I think ba will outscore cisse this season but thats just my opinion, we will have to wait and see

3-0 Diarra. Was talking him up as a 5.0 option the other day. Certainly wouldn't say he's an out and out DM, gets forward a fair bit and contributed 3 assists & a goal in his few appearances last season.

Because Paul Lambert is a really good manager who will get the best out of his players and they have good fixtures. Pretty straightforward really.

All the 4.5m keepers except Jussi have a poor fixture/no fixture in gw3. This means that you really need Jussi if you want a 9m combo. That sucks really, unless someone can come up with a solution not involving Begovic.
